Very delicious rich and chocolatey mocha. They have some unique specials on the menu like bourbon and blueberry lattes. Looks like they keep rotating their menu which is probably available on their instagram. Barista was cordial and polite. I love drinking coffee in real mugs unless I am going to coffee chains. I have only seen pictures with to-go cups and I wasn't offered an option as well. The coffee itself was good. I ordered a double shot of espresso over ice with a splash of non-dairy milk, and I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, the overall experience was disappointing enough that I would not return. I was surprised to learn directly from the barista that there are no outlets available for customers to charge a phone or laptop. For a café, that was extremely frustrating, especially because I came here partly based on previous reviews and expected it to be a place where I could sit for a little while and get some work done. What bothered me even more was how another customer was treated. I completely understand that a business expects people to make a purchase if they are going to sit inside and use the space or Wi-Fi. However, the customer had only been sitting there for a short period of time and wasn't really given an opportunity to order before being called out from behind the counter about needing to make a purchase. It felt unnecessary and unwelcoming. Then, after being called out from across the café, another barista walked over to the individual and spoke to him in a way that I felt was disrespectful. At that point, it was no longer simply about a business enforcing its policies, it was the manner in which the situation was handled. It was uncomfortable to witness as another customer. I also learned that the Wi-Fi is only available to customers who have made a purchase. That made the interaction stand out even more to me, because it suggested that this individual had likely been a paying customer before or had previously made a purchase in order to have access. Regardless, there were much more professional and discreet ways to approach the situation. For me, a café experience is about more than just the coffee. It is also about the atmosphere, convenience, hospitality, and how people are treated. This was especially disappointing because it was my first time visiting Black Turtle. While my coffee was good, the lack of outlets and, more importantly, the customer service I witnessed completely changed my impression of the café. I left feeling uncomfortable and disappointed. Their regular coffee/tea options are classic, but their seasonal drinks and blends are fantastic! Always something unique to try. It's relatively quiet, the ambiance is peaceful with music to fit the vibe. Everyone present is either in/out for takeaway or sitting peacefully at a table, so you're not distracted. The noise level is just right in terms of drinks being made, orders being prepared and the classic sound of people coming in/out of the door. The view is nice from upstairs with a window view onto to Chestnut. The staff is always so kind, engaging, helpful with recommendations and always present! Not present in just being there, but always willing to help in the moment. Most of my writing sessions and thesis deadlines were met at BTC, a forever memory at my favorite table in the window! Ha! Stopped in on a cold November afternoon while waiting on our designated admission time to the Mutter Museum. Our party of 7 was looking for respite from the cold winds, a place to sip a warm cup of coffee to get rid of the chill. This coffee shop was quaint, offered limited seating upstairs and a bigger room downstairs. However, it looked like everyone was looking for a warm place to stay No seats were available, so we grabbed our coffees to go and headed back out to the wind tunnel. I stopped by this location on a Saturday afternoon hoping to hang out for a bit, but unfortunately all the seats in the dining area were full. They apparently have additional seating in a downstairs area, but that was roped off during my visit. So I grabbed something to go. The menu had a nice selection of flavored syrups for lattes and a few drink flavor specials. I ordered an iced latte with strawberry syrup and a pistachio muffin. The two employees behind the counter were friendly and efficient. The employee who took my order asked if I wanted my muffin warmed, which I appreciated. I only had a brief wait, as my order was ready pretty quickly. The muffin was fresh and very tasty. My latte was properly prepared and tasted good. I definitely prefer my lattes on the sweeter end of the spectrum, and this one was not, but I still liked the mild strawberry flavor. I've made a decision to go to coffee shops and read because trying to do it at home is proving too distracting with a cat. And a kitchen. I wanted a coffee shop, but didn't want MY coffee shop. I did a little searching and found Black Turtle. I can walk from West Philly and it looked cozy from the photos. I arrived and ordered a delicious drink called "Matcha Fairy" and settled in. Nice big windows that brought lots of natural light. The place is a bit small but I found a table. As I was reading, someone behind me was conducting a rather loud FaceTime call without even using AirPods so that was a little weird. But everything else was good. The baristas were nice, my matcha was delicious and I was able to get some reading in. I'll be back. read more

This is such a cute place with great vibes and even better coffee. I had a blueberry and brown sugar latte that was one of the best lattes I've had in a long time (it had a cute name on the menu that unfortunately I can't remember!). The location is convenient and service was quick and very friendly. The only slight downside for me was drinks were really pricey- I think my latte was $8 before tip- but unfortunately that's just how things are these days! Getting into Philly at 8:46am via Amtrak, I found myself in desperate need to find a coffee shop with ample seating but not too much noise to take a 9:30am zoom call so that my boss would think I am still in New York ahahahaa. I rushed over to Alchemy, which is a highly rated coffee shop just down the street, but that place felt like a Doctors office and was packed with people jamming away at their laptops with the charger plugged in. I had mentally bookmarked Black Turtle Coffee on the way as a viable second option, so did a quick reverse pivot like a prime Allen Iverson and started walking back that way. Upon entry, I knew this was exactly what I was looking for: Ample seating, music audible but low enough, and a handful of other people in here just posted. I was seated with my laptop open, noise canceling WH-H910N headphones on by 9:20 and CRUSHED that zoom call powered by this Black Turtle Coffee black americano. My one gripe was that $5 seemed a bit expensive for an americano, but I'm used to nyc prices so I didn't even think about that until I started typing this lmao. I am undoubtedly a coffee junkie and since moving to Philly recently, I've been very excited to try out as many of the coffeehouses here as I can. One of the first I visited, and by far my most regular coffee haunt so far is Black Turtle Coffee at the corner of Chestnut and 21st. Atmosphere 7/10 Black Turtle is a smallish coffee shop that can become a little cramped when there are a lot of people inside, though this is not unusual for coffee shops here in the city. I often do work when I go to a coffee shop, and if it weren't for the tables outside, a nice bonus, I wouldn't always find a space to work in. Otherwise, the interior is nicely and contemporarily decorated, and their cool little multi-colored turtle shell logos dot the scene. The Coffee 10/10 Black Turtle has a nice menu of delicious hot and iced coffee drinks to choose from, and I especially love their cafe mocha. This is one of the few coffeehouses I've been to here that offers coconut milk as an alternative to other milks, and that is a big bonus for me. Service 10/10 Undoubtedly the biggest reason why Black Turtle has become my virtual daily go-to for coffee is its employees. In the many times I've been there, I have yet to not be greeted with friendly smiles and conversation whenever I go in there. As someone brand new to Philadelphia that knows no one, it's become the one place in town where I almost feel as if do. I had an extremely disappointing interaction today with staff and will not be returning. I've been going to Black Turtle for two years now almost daily because I work down the street. Today, my coworker (who also goes regularly) and I were sitting at a table with coffees we purchased at Black Turtle and a baked good from home. An employee, who just walked in for her shift- she wasn't in uniform and had all of her bags, rudely walks by and tells us we can't bring in outside food. We explain we bought the coffees on site and she simply repeats what she said. This employee has helped me numerous times and to be treated so blasé did it for me. I ordered a $12 cajun chicken sandwich that came to me with a huge hunk of break and almost no chicken or toppings inside; and the chicken was bland and rubbery. No flavor at all!
