There is a lot to be said about Elixr... I moved into the city a couple of months ago and passed the cafe many times writing it off as looking kinda snooty and having coffee that probably cost as much as my computer per cup...
Call me an ignorant jerk for judging a book by its cover.
I decided to come in with my girlfriend finally as we are always looking to try new places in the area. The menu is surprisingly simple. They have about 12 selections of coffee items, but are more than willing to accommodate.
If you are looking for a full breakfast this is not the place. They have an assortment of bakery goods, but that's about it. This does not affect the 5 star rating as it is just a detail of the cafe. Not to mention the everything bagel with honey cream cheese was fantastic. I also tried my girlfriends almond croissant and it was delicious as well.
Let me now explain the extent of my 5 star rating;
I walked in to walk up to a counter with two young men in their 20's and was welcomed casually by them. After asking what I would be having I explained that I had never visited before and that I was curious as to what I should be trying. Evan was more than ready for me. He asked what I was used to drinking and as I explained that I started with black coffee but switched over time to cream and sugar he got very excited, and informed me that today was the day that he brought me back to the dark side of the coffee cup. He didn't really give me much of a choice, and I am grateful.
I've never seen hand poured coffee before. He poured hot water over the grinds a little at a time and explained to me the science of degassing the coffee. He also had a small timer next to him that allowed him to calculate the time he was taking to ensure perfect extraction. I knew that he knew what he was doing as we had a short conversation on how he had experimented with extraction times, and had moved from only taking 2:30 to 3:30 and the extra minute was worth it.
He was almost upset when I said I wanted the coffee in a paper cup to go. Apparently the paper cup gives a bad taste, but he really wanted me to be happy so he poured me a sample in a small glass expresso cup, and now I am forever changed back to the rich dark flavor of black coffee. I can honestly say it was the best I'd ever had, and my girlfriend who hates black coffee agreed.
The saddest part was walking away with my paper cup, and tasting the distinct difference between glass and paper. This was only a motivator that caused me to wake up the next morning and come back. Needless to say, I plan to be a regular.
Thanks Evan, and the rest of the very kind and welcoming staff of Elixr.
As for the environment, it is composed if very simple wooden benches stools and chairs with simple wood tables and classy marble countertops with tall bar style wood planked seats. The music is always mellow and calming, and the clientele that I have experienced there are very kind, and to say in the least not the loud and obnoxious crowd that you would get at starbucks. Truly everything I could want from my new favorite coffee spot in my new home town.
My recommendation:
Grab your computer and a pair of headphones or a good book, and grab a cup of hand poured. It will set the pace for your day. read more
