TL;DR: Emory gave me the best haircut I've ever had, and I've had my hair done by many hairstylists (due to working in salons for over a decade). I used to do hair. I have been cutting my own hair for years as I've struggled with finding someone who could tend to it for me. It's thick, coarse, wavy and frizzy (I'm caucasian). I'm not picky, I just need someone to not thin it out everywhere, I need the shape to not look like a ball or a triangle, and I need it to be even. I randomly saw Emory and Black Sheep Salon on TikTok and was impressed by three things straight away: 1) They do kinky/coily cuts (it's very rare for white folks to get this education or seek it out). 2) They've created an inclusive salon environment. 3) I could see right away their haircuts are superb: they're structured, shaped for the face, and intentionally done with thoughtfulness and care. I went in for a tiny trim. In some ways, this can be a challenging request (beyond having a hairstylist from outside your salon ask you to fix their hair!). The ask is to cut where it matters (good judgement) and leave the rest (thoughtful restraint). My result was exactly what I asked for, what I needed, and a super cute new shape to boot! I've never had the experience of feeling thrilled at the results of a haircut; or, for days after -- but now I do! I'm happy to highly recommend Emory and Black Sheep Salon as a whole! read more

I love Black Sheep! I've been seen by every stylist here and everyone is incredible! I started going to BSS when I was transitioning my hair out of years of flat ironing and keratin treatments back to its curly self. Emory helped me learn about my hair texture and how to style my hair during this time! I was very embarrassed of my curls (hello internalized racism) and Emory heard my concerns and walked me through them. Dinnie and Frankie have given me cuts and colors that are sooo gorgeous and have both helped me explore new styles (baby bangs, QiQi treatments, cherry cola hair) while listening to me share my anxieties about my hair (hello hair anxiety havers BSS is your safe haven!) Beyond the amazing hair services is BSS's contributions to the community. BSS led multiple plus size clothing swaps making clothing accessible to all individuals. No one was turned away at the event for not having clothes to swap and everything was thought out to be accessible for all individuals. BSS walks the walk and talks the talk. They are the leaders of Disability Justice in Long Beach. The entire salon is fully adaptable to a variety of accessibility needs. As a Special Education Teacher seeing BSS provide a space that I know ALL my students would be welcome in warms my heart. BSS's bathroom had a cruising board for connections, fetanyl test kits, condoms, info on a variety of topics from domestic violence, to voters guides to information on ICE. I had such high hopes for this salon and the hairdressers. We had an appointment scheduled for my kiddo a few weeks ago and they had a slight cold so after consulting with their potential hairdresser, Mimi, we rescheduled. We rescheduled for two weeks later. Their appointment was scheduled for 10:30am. We knew this appointment would take the majority of the day as it's a bleach job on curly hair, plus dye and cut. So I took the day off. At 9am I received a text asking to postpone the appointment to 11/11:15am. Then by 10am I received a text canceling the appointment all together. I asked if there was someone in the salon to take over appointments if the hair stylist went feeling well. They said no. I was offered an appointment 5 days from now. While I understand getting sick or not feeling well etc, I find the way the way the situation as handled very unprofessional. I myself went to the salon once about two weeks before this interaction and again had high hopes. I wanted a dye and trim for an A-line long bob. I left with a choppy chord bob with the back of my neck shaved. I hated it so much. There was another patron getting their hair done near me and once they left, the two hair stylist were talking badly about the client. Directly in front of me. The vibe and aesthetic there would have been amazing but it just misses the mark with the lack of professionalism. I don't know how to describe how much I love Black Sheep. The interior? A vibe. The people? Amazing. The atmosphere? Life-changing. The space is absolutely inclusive to ALL, and Black Sheep stands on business with what they do. As a queer and neurodivergent person I have never felt more comfortable and cared for in a space. Marie was so warm, welcoming, and really listened to me and what I wanted done with my hair, even with how nervous I was about it. Everyone else in the space that was there was just as warm and welcoming, and I left feeling loved, cared for, and hyped up with my new haircut. My curls were rejuvenated, bouncy, and looking the best they have looked in YEARS. Marie also gave me some pointers on how to take care of my hair, and also showed me a new way to style it, which I'm already excited to try. My undercut? Phenomenal. Amazing. I've gotten so many compliments on it already. The space is SO accessible, which is really appreciated. Also Gandalf the chihuahua is the cutest thing ever. I got married last month in Oceanside and to my dismay, I couldn't find any salons in the area that I felt I could get a bridal style done with natural, two-strand twists. My stylist up in the Bay Area suggested checking out Black Sheep Salon, even though they're in Long Beach, and I'm so glad I did. I connected first with a stylist thought would be the best fit based on her IG, and Tamara was excited and very collaborative as we spent some time exchanging ideas and inspiration virtually. I met with her at the salon earlier this year and we had a nice consultation where we figured out the plan for the big day. FRANKIE IS A HAIR GOD I drove all the way to Long Beach from SD for some new hair. I am one of the most obnoxious clients to have because I am VERY bad at making decisions, and I don't know how to describe what I want (neurodivergent as heck). I also have an incredibly sensitive scalp. Frankie was incredible and helpful. They helped me decide on a direction to go with my hair, suggested calico hair dye, and went to work. I booked an appointment with Leah for a curl detox and lesson and they were so awesome, gentle, thorough, nonjudgmental, and very patient; Leah was completely transparent about what products they were using and the process, and I felt very well taken care of during my service. Been coming here for over a year. LOVE the energy here. Everyone gets along, there's so much teamwork. It's inclusive to all peoples and bodies. I think the chair can hold up 800lbs, but ask them to verify. The wash station also allows you to recline more instead of just tilting your head back in a classic chair at the salon scenario. If you need a quiet talk free appointment, extra covid precautions, private room, ear plugs, fidget toys, snacks or drinks they got you! Marie is the owner and my go to.
