This is a great place to go with the family. We've been going for years and never disappointed. Not necessarily gourmet food or fancy service, but consistently high quality food. The regular menu is great, but they really do a great job with seasonal menus - both food and drinks. Just visited in March and they had a delicious corned beef and cabbage platter. Eeeish! This place has gots a lot's of splaining to do... For one, place is full of local Randolphites. You either love em or hate em...no in-between. The bar is pretty big but the bartenders can forget about you in the sea of people waiting. The food...oh that's where they need a lot of improvement on. They burned our nacho's not once but twice. And wanted to replace it with a third but we decided to pass. Their chicken sandwiches aren't very good. Dry. From what I understand the food here is not very good (based on regulars). The service, meh. The server was nice but was MIA for long periods of time. This place does get busy but I would suggest going to Morris Tap and Grill for some great food. Had an uneventful crab cake sandwich with some limp sweet potato fries. I don't like riffraff in my crab cake--in case you haven't read one of my other rants, I am from Maryland and the people in my tribe don't put diced red peppers and onions in our cakes. Ya'll hear? The bar set-up is not great and bc of the big square bar, when it gets crowded you and your posse get all jammed up in the few feet of space between the wall and the bar. Needs a more open design. Barn decor was kinda cute in the restaurant. Went back again for lunch on a cold winter's day. Sat by the fire and had iced tea and nachos and it was a nice experience. My ex and kids live in Randolph so I am there quite often. And being a single dad 45 minutes from home, my visits generally include a meal. There is always some debate over where to go. Morristown is close as are a plethora of restaurants along rt 10. Since my sons cannot even agree on what day of the week it is, there is usually a difference of opinion over where to go. Inevitably, I will suggest the Barn and all of a sudden a light miraculously appears over each of their heads and they smile, sort of. I like the Barn a lot. The food is consistently good and service attentive. Prices are fair, selection and drinks are more than adequate. They also have a bunch of TVs and a real fireplace which is quite nice although once I sat next to it and thought my ass was going to catch fire. They also have a fire pit outside and more than ample parking. If there is a wait, it's never too long. This place is an excellent alternative to the chains in the area. They offer a better selection and quality of food at about the same price as you would find at a Houlihans or Bennigans. I love the rustic feel and decor and have never had a bad experience with anything there. I think if they were closer to me, I would be there a hell of a lot more but for now, when I visit the boys, this is our "go to" place and I am more than fine with that. read more

Any restaurant can have an off night but tonight Black River Barn hit the trifecta. I ordered something off their summer menu called Shrimp and Corncakes. The waitress had never heard of it, but it sounded interesting. My wife ordered fish and chips and my son a full rack of baby back ribs. We started with an appetizer of fried pickles. Greasy, thin and not a full plate full of pickles showed up. The service was extremely slow for a restaurant that was mostly empty. The fish was not crunchy. It was wet and soggy. My son got a half order of baby back ribs on top of a few Louisiana style ribs. They must have run short on baby backs or had some Louisiana to get rid of. I got a bowl of some kind of chowder which was returned. Much later I got a plate with rice, veg and one round what looked like a crab cake made with shrimp and some corn. It was mealy, tasteless and $21.99. It was inedible and should have been returned but I got through some of it. In short this should be removed from their menu. The long of it is they need a new chef. This meal cost us $100 and it was unenjoyable. I think two stars is a gift. We have eaten there before, but not this bad. Should stick to burgers and bar pizza. read more

This was a good first review to have! Within the first eight or so minutes from ordering we had our appetizer, which was the Country Mac and cheese with BBQ pulled pork. Oh my goodness this Mac and cheese was sooo good!! Every time I took a bite I just said "oh my god"... I would definitely order this again. Then for dinner I ordered the Margherita chicken sandwich but was given a different chicken sandwich (the Texas BBQ Chicken Melt). However, I decided to just eat it anyways because it looked good and my stomach was hungry aha. this place is very much okay if not less. i know that fridays are busy and create a big fuss in the kitchen and among the servers. our server was great and he was working hard... the host we had, brian was also very personable and we enjoyed the wait with him.... Our issue came with the wait for the food. we waited close to an hour for our food for a party of 3 ... 2 burgers and a wrap..... it was not normal and the tables around us who were seated after us had their food before us..... it is hard to complain because the kitchen is working to feed the whole restaurant and I understand that, but there is a lack of communication and a lack of priority which creates the customers to get frustrated and 2/3 members of our party were less than satisfied with their meals read more

I have been here several times, and it is a fine enough place to eat. I feel like the sports bar atmosphere is really what they are best at. The food is decent, the pizza very good and the burgers are also ok. They have a butternut squash soup that is amazing. They also do well with larger parties. Sometimes the wait staff seems less than interested. One thing I can definitely caution. Never order something called the Octoberfest when it is December. I thought it was a descriptive name only, but I found it to be more of a seasonal offering that I was served weeks past its prime. Bad move, but that was a while ago and their menu has been revised. I would avoid having a party here. My wife had her baby shower at Black River and everyone was pushed and rushed out since they scheduled a party a half hour later. They seemed more concerned with getting everyone out than the actual party. It's a great restaurant though and the people are nice, but as far as having a party here it was disappointing. read more

I went to the Sunday breakfast buffet with my family, and I had a really good time, even though the food was not outstanding. The space is quite large, with high ceilings (like a barn, of course), and fun but not too cheesy decor, and a gorgeous big fireplace. There are also three big TV screens that seem to only play sports. They were a little distracting during brunch since no big games were on at 11am, though I can see the draw for weeknights. The brunch area is separated from dining area, which is really nice...so you aren't bumping into diners as you are trying to fill your plate with omeletes and bacon. The variety of food is quite large, with French toast, eggs, potato pancakes, some pasta offerings, fried chicken, salad, and even two carving stations for beef and ham, and an omelete station. The servers are attentive and friendly, and everything is very clean. But the food just isn't anything special. Even the mimosa wasn't that great, and it's just OJ and cheap champagne...it was somehow a little off. I really liked the pasta and the rolls. For $15.99 a person, it's not terrible, but not the best either. It's much more family friendly than Rod's in Madison, though. I would give Black River Barn another try for after work drinks in their huge bar area. Or maybe in the summer for a burger after a round of mini golf at the nearby Randolph Driving Range. I'm tempted to give five, just to help them get to where I think that they should be, but think that four is more fair. The ambiance, food, and service are all good. A great place to go for casual dining. The food is excellent and the menu has plenty of choices along with daily and seasonal specials. The staff is very friendly, they always make me feel welcome when I come for lunch or the occasional dinner with family or friends. Their is lots of seating indoor and out, when weather allows, so there is rarely a wait. The dining area has a fireplace which is nice on colder days. Big bar area with tons of TVs tuned into all the sporting events. They also have entertainment and karaoke on certain nights. Beautiful restaurant ! They have every food you could ever think of. I had yet to find a restaurant with as many options as they do but I have found one! Their food is absolutely delicious and fresh ! Very professional and courteous staff. The tables were bussed as we finished each plate and our waiter kept coming over to check on us which I liked. Everyone was kind and polite. The view was absolutely beautiful! I wish we were given the option to eat inside as well given that it was cold but it's okay. I went to the Black River Barn tonight with a friend and sat out on the patio under the tent. It was a lovely evening, the last of Indian summer I'm afraid. Our waiter was decent, but I had to grab a set up from the next table over. Then I had to ask for knives and their usual pickles, which I love. All in all, not the best service. But the topper was the two rats that ran across the patio as we were eating... One under my feet toward the river, the other towards the restaurant. We put our feet up on the chairs and called our waiter over to get the check and tell him about the rats. His reaction? Oh, I thought you were just getting comfortable (our legs on the chair). No, uncomfortable is what we are, there are RATS running around under my feet! He brought the check, no apology really, no manager, nothing. Can't imagine I'll be going back to the Barn. read more

I didn't like the decor but I enjoyed the food. I mean I guess it went along with the whole barn theme. There were many people sitting outside while overlooking the water. My waiter was very nice and attentive to our needs. He shared with us that he has only been there for one month. The cappuccino was tasty. Went for lunch today with a friend. Ordered the Boston Scrod. It comes with rice and steamed veggies. Asked for the fries instead of rice and got rice and fries but no veggies. Fries were good. rice was that spanish type rice. The scrod is described on the menu as having a bread crumb crust. Alas, it only had that MSG laden, orange Sazon seasoning on it. It was edible. There must have been over 100 people, but it did not feel wrong, as there was a lot of space between the tables and everyone was keeping their space.
