Ample on-site parking. OUTSIDE has a long waterside deck, an open area, and a covered table area. Plenty of chairs and tables. Lots of space. BAR AREA is totally separate from the dining room. This means dining does not hear merry chattering. TVs surround the inside but with no sound. We could actually talk to one another. Counters kept clean and bottles organized. Staff does not hustle your partially empty drink with an immediate refresh. You are asked. Decent alcohol ratio, good wine pour. Affordable prices. DINING STAFF knows their menu and writes down your order and cooking preferences. Beverages are promptly refilled, plates cleared without being grabby. Any serving member will help you with refills and clearing the area. They appear to be well respected by their manager. They stopped by just enough to check how we are doing. Greatest appreciation to server Brittany for her engaging ways and professional attention. FIREPLACE is a great find in the dining area. Wait staff used fresh cut wood and not box store planks. Did not roast us or melt our drink ice. FOOD saved the best for last. The varied menu challenged us to find the night's choice. Presentation was orderly and pleasing. It makes a difference when a good meal is plated well. Our steaks were cooked exactly as we asked - medium. A nice outside char with a medium pink inside. Vegetables were fresh and colorful, baked potato soft. The entire meal was obviously cooked for us. Side of sweet pickles had an interesting scatter of hot pepper flakes. Reasonable, fair prices. I've been going to the barn with my family for more than a decade, and frankly? It's pretty much just okay. I've never had a meal here that was delicious, or one that was disgusting. Everything I've tried (and I've tried a lot) has been solidly meh. Personally I think it's because they try to do too much. Maybe whittle down the menu, focus on a smaller selection of curated dishes. Until then, the Barn is a good place to go if your party can't decide on somewhere else. Now, if you are a follower of my reviews, you can tell I love a good dive bar....low key spots where you can just relax, kick back to some good tunes, and not have to worry about the inevitable....ugggggghhh who is going to DD us home, voluntarily. Well.....we both could have DD'ed, because two bottles of yuengling were TWELVE DOLLARS. I can get a six-pack for less than 7 bucks at Merit in Montclair. So, clearly......this place is a rip off. Not only that, but it took us close to 15 minutes just to even get the bartenders attention, granted, it was a pretty busy little early Saturday evening......but the structures of the bar are...well, ass-backwards. Like, there's really zero maneuverability, you will wait to get served because the bar folks don't budge and thus, the bartenders can not see you. It's cramped, when there are 30-plus people surrounding the bar area. No space, at all. You are better off ordering from the wait staff. On a plus side - the band that night was pretty sweet, and no cover charge. Also they have games you can play outside.....entertainment with friends is always elevated when this is the case. After feeling a bit ripped off....(and getting eaten alive by Mosquitos)....we called it a night. Friendly crowd, overall. Just maybe more of a day-drinking place......oh, and the food, we got the nachos....meh, I've had worse. The mixed reviews on this restaurant surprised me at first, but after reading closely I think I understand how the "yays" and "nays" break down. The "yays": This is a great place for a family meal, particularly if you have picky eaters or simply a diversity of tastes. The menu is enormous and has something for everyone. The atmosphere is warm and casual and the flat screens always have a game or two playing. It reminds me very much of some my favorite restaurants in ski country. The Black River Barn does basic pub food well. I personally like the pizza and wings. Other family members love the pulled pork and penne vodka. I think you'll be happy with both your meal and your bill if you stick to the basic pub fare--burgers, sandwiches, simple pasta recipes, pizza, appetizers, etc. The "nay's": If you're a foodie, perhaps this isn't the best place for you. The menu is, quite frankly, too big and I've learned that the more interesting a dish sounds on the menu the more likely it will be to disappoint. Stick to the dishes a place like this does well. I have been frequenting the barn for several years and have never written a review! Woops! The food is excellent and always consistent. I go for the same thing all the time, the Swordfish basilica and it is always great! I have had their salads, pizza and other seafood options and have never had a bad meal. It can get very loud when they are busy and when they are busy they are BUSY! I prefer to go later at night (like after 9pm) for a late dinner in a vacant dining room to avoid the crowds and the noise, since the bar can get pretty rowdy if you are seated close by. The waitstaff is pleasant and friendly even when the place is jamming they show no signs of stress or try to rush anything. In the winter it is great to get a seat by the fireplace. My wife and I ate here some time ago, and while the food may have improved in the meantime, I doubt it. Perhaps the bar scene compensates for the mediocre cuisine, although it seems to attract a coterie of obnoxious local drunks that have been drinking their way through Roxbury for many years. The place itself is a shabby, down-at-the-heels building that passes off lack of maintenance as quaintness. The food was below average but not cheap. My wife's salad with shrimp featured a grand total of three small shrimp, and it wasn't inexpensive. Tucked off Route 10 West in Randolph NJ you will find the Black River Barn. If you are looking for a lot of choices and a family atmosphere than look no farther. They have a huge selection of food options from simple sandwiches to exotic dinners. I prefer their pizza which is baked in a brick oven and have a nice crispy crust. During different times of the year they have special menus offering dinner selections featuring foods that relate to that specific season. During the warmer weather there is an outside dining area that overlooks a small lake. If you go to the Barn in the cooler seasons there is a fireplace in the main dining area that adds a rustic feel to your dining experience. Outside they have a fire pit burning that adds that wonderful burning wood smell. The service during all of my visits has been superb. The staff pays allot of attention to the needs of the customer. The management also is very active in the operation of the restaurant which I believe ensures the staff will be at their best. If you are looking for a place to drink they do have a large bar to sit. Depending on the day there is also entertainment like bands and karaoke. read more

First off the staff is great. Everyone was very attentive. We sat outside which was also nice. Spacious deck with a view of a pond. The food, however, was rather "meh". They have a big menu which isn't a great sign but whatever. I got the shrimp tacos and, granted, that probably isn't the move to make at a place like this. They had plenty of shrimp in them but they were small and kind of a weird texture. It came with rice that was cold and also not that good. First off, how do you write such long reviews about anything? I mean I know Yelp is for people who like to share their opinions but at the end of the day just give a quick thumbs up/thumbs down. A lot of people in this area have themselves whipped up in a tizzy thinking it's the best there is, but it's just not. Waitstaff have trouble listening very often (I work in service, so I'm understanding). Food tastes fine and as you'd expect but not worth the prices they charge. I can tell when something is frozen and when it's homemade. Large HD TV's blasting ESPN or FoxNews totally throw off that "barn" ambience. This review is looooong overdue, however, here it is. . . I held my daughter's engagement party here in September, 2014. From the moment we began to discuss the particulars for the party we were handled professionally and respectfully. The management and staff out did themselves with making sure that everything was perfect for the evening. When I arrived the tables were ready with clean, crisp tablecloths and arranged exactly as discussed. The Fall decorations were tasteful and beautifully arranged. The staff were so helpful with setting up the table decorations and making sure that everything was perfect! It was a beautiful warm evening and the sun setting on the lake was breathtaking. The guests soon arrived and the buffet was served. The food was TOP NOTCH and the service by the employees was wonderful. Everyone was polite, friendly, smiling and they couldn't do enough for us!! Looking for somewhere to watch the game? This is your place - Especially if you're a Giants fan.. If you didn't have a Giants jersey on that night, you were in the minority. Black River Barn is a bar/restaurant, but I only experienced the bar side. It seemed pretty dark inside. We picked a hightop rectangle table at the end of the bar and I ended up with my back to the bar and all the TVs. That turned out to be a little bit of a bummer. I think if it was more well-lit I wouldn't have felt like I was left out of something. The service was good. Their signature soup is chicken noodle for 3.99. I'm a soup lover in general, so I'm biased, but that's a great deal. It was very good and had a good broth-to-chunk ratio. I had a Blue Moon which was $5.50. I don't know if that's a good deal because I am normally all about my vodka cran. This particular night I needed a break from liquor! The outside area is really nice. There are two large TVs on/in the outside wall facing the patio and off to the side there's a fire pit. I wish it wasn't so cold because I would have loved to hang out by the fire for longer. The food is pretty good. It has a great atmosphere. Every time I've been there the waiter messed up my order big time. The entire table got their food and it took 20min to bring me a sandwich. When I got my sandwich it was slathered in mayo which is the only thing I specified I didn't want. Another time they forgot my beverage until after my meal was delivered... This place is very special and it's definitely worth driving for a while to get there! It's located by the lake, surrounded by trees and nature, which makes the experience even better. The view reminds me of the one I had from one coffee shop in France while I was on a trip with some college friends. If you're tired of city restaurants with the same old look and feel, this is your spot. I was there a couple of days ago with my family for some lunch. It's quite a large restaurant with lots of tables so it can be very, very busy. It was loaded with guests when we arrived. Their staff was very friendly and attentive, they had really good attitudes, even though they had so many people to serve. We got the menu and after scouring the menu a few times over, I decided to take the barn garden salad as an appetizer and lobster mac and cheese as my entrée because two glorious items combined like that must be heaven. Anyway, my salad was pretty good, tasted very fresh. It was your standard greens, onions, olives, cucumbers, tomatoes... very nice! Perfect primer for my ridiculous entrée. So the lobster mac and cheese was as amazing as expected, it came with cheddar sauce and pasta topped with herbed breadcrumbs. I devoured it in about 7 minutes flat. The mac and cheese was very creamy, not overly salty, and the lobster pieces were still tender and not overcooked. Basically perfect. Also, I noticed on their menu that they have gluten-free pizza, which I never noticed before in any other restaurant. Maybe I'll try it someday. Pizzas from the table next to ours looked and smelled really amazing. My parents were happy with their orders: meditteranean tuna salad and shrimp scampi. Their prices are okay, maybe those scampi are a little too expensive (about $18). The thing I like about this place is definitely the unique look and feel. Service is good and they have a lot of very interesting menu items that sound like fun concoctions you and I would come up with. It does get quite loud inside though, which can be a good or bad thing depending on what type of vibe you're going for. Nice decor, it felt homey and the fireplace kept us nice and warm. The outside smelled wonderful due to the smoking process. We had calamari appetizer which was delicious but we wanted the one with the banana peppers and bay seasoning and the waitress didn't specify we had a choice. For dinner we had the specialty pizza - thin crust with fresh arugula, crispy bacon, bleu cheese sliced steak, fresh roasted red peppers, red onion, candied figs with a balsamic glaze. OMG it was so damn good I wanted to eat the whole thing by myself. The only change I would make is use fresh figs, the candied were a little sweet. I wish this pizza was on the menu all the time! We forced ourselves to eat only some and take the rest home - it was also good the next day :) Big downfall is that they were having a staff meeting at the bar and we could hear everything being said - we also visited their sister location Cinders about a month ago and the same exact thing happened! They were loud and not very nice to each other during this meeting. The servers virtually disappeared for almost 20 minutes and there were quite a few tables besides ours occupied. If the owners read these reviews I would highly recommend doing these staff meetings at a different time and out of sight. Although the staff meeting at Cinders was in the back and again all servers disappeared for too long of a time. We will try these restaurants again since we enjoyed the food but we really hope the service is a little friendlier and more available. read more

As a traveler the worst thing about this place is finding it. When you are there though you should be able to find something to satisfy you on the massive menu. If you are looking for an entree you will pay at least $12 but your portion will be worth it. They offer a full bar so your drink choices are not limited. In the summertime I recommend sitting outside to enjoy the water and being away from the noise that can sometimes be overwhelming on the inside. read more

We stopped in here for a weekday lunch the other day, I ordered a veggie wrap with a side salad, I enjoyed my lunch very much. The veggies in the wrap were well cooked and I was honestly worried that the asparagus would be undercooked. The horseradish sauce on the wrap had the right amount of heat and it wasn't too messy. The side salad was also the right portion size and had a nice assortment of veggies on it. I would return for lunch but only if it were after the fireplace had already been started! They nearly smoked us all out with cardboard and lighter fluid smoke. Several staff members were attempting to start the fire for nearly an hour while we were there and I'm not even sure if it ever got going. I'll come back when we can sit outside! read more

Black River Barn is not what they advertise themselves to be but I really like it anyway. Its all about the atmosphere. Its a huge barn with high ceilings and a very country feel to it. The menu claims to be focused on healthy and fresh, but the reality is, the food is kind of just okay, and doesn't taste like fresh off the farm home cooking. But its a huge bar area, great for watching sports, and they have an outdoor area by a lake where they sometimes hold cookouts. Huge menu doesn't make up for the "eh"-ness of the food, but like I said, its all about atmosphere. read more

I attended a party around the corner from here where we all agreed to get a 30 pack of Bud Lights due to it being so close and most liquor stores were closed. For ONE pack of beer they charged us $70! That's "their best deal". It is a money hungry business that takes advantage of its customers. Absolutely amazing. I definitely recommend dining here. It has a lively yet cozy atmosphere with excellent service. There was a beautiful bonfire outside. What can I say about my experience on July 4th with my family and a few friends. Our waitress was very good and that was the only good experience of my visit there. My granddaughter ordered lobster mac and cheese and cut her mouth on a piece of shell in the dish I didn't know this till later. I order the special baby back ribs. They were so dry I couldn't finish them, the potatoes were cold and tasteless, the corn on cob was cold and dry and the corn bread was stale. My grandson ordered the nachos dish and hardly ate any it was so bad and it also looked horrible. My son in law said there was hardly any sausage in his sausage and peppers sandwich. What a wasted dinner out on July 4th. And to top it off we had the privilege of paying $160. The other couple had a separate bill si I don't know how much they paid. read more

Even though we live in the neighborhood, first time visit on Friday May 2. Busy, loud, family friendly space. Experienced staff that give great service and have fun doing it. Cinco de Mayo special menu was a nice addition to an already extensive menu with lots of variety. Margueritas were in order and they came out big and tasty. Ap was a little disappointing Chicken Chips... Should have done the Wings. Wife had special Fajitas that were very good. I had the Bistro Burger which is served on a croissant bun and is topped with Brie. Ate every bite. Fries were run of the mill. No room for dessert...just too stuffed! We ate dinner in the bar area since the dining area had no one in it on a Thursday evening. The menu was so diverse and something for everyone, even though the pizzas got top reviews, as did the meat and salads. We had glasses of wine (OK selection). Large selection of beers and specialty drinks. A bread basket with a half of loaf of bread was provided. For dinner I had the BBQ 1/2 ribs and 1/4 chicken with fries, beans, and corn on the cob. The corn was kind of wilty. The ribs were good but kind of bare and tough. The chicken was really a quarter of a chicken, The BBQ was delicious. I also sampled the vegetable pizza. Not bad. Entree was probably on average $15-$20 each. Sandwiches and salads were slightly less. Wine was $6 a glass. No Happy Hour during the week or at least on Thursday evenings). I tried it and have to say was good. I had the beer battered fish n chips with Cajun tarter sauce and sea salt fries. To be honest biggest pieces of fish I ever had. Do not think it was frozen because it was flaky and full of flavor. Drinks: the girls tried three of the Martines. Don't remember the names but they loved them After dinner we went to the bar were they had a live band playing. Good band and great crowd. Bartenders were good and drinks were priced right. We later learned that the nice guy at the door was one of the partners "Izzy". Great guy and went out of his way to make sure we had a great experience.
