Started our meal on a recent visit with Potato Pancakes which were very good, especially with what appeared to be home-made applesauce. Our table ordered a variety of dishes. Everybody enjoyed their entrees, I got a chance to sample the sauerbraten and Veal schnitzel both were very good...the other diners with us enjoyed their entrees as well...not blown away by the sides though which were only ok. Since last October 2014, chef Monica and her brother took over this darling German restaurant. The vibe is very relaxed. The service is perfect. The captains running the place are good Naples folks with a little local business. I always feel like supporting the ma/pa joints is best.. German beers-- loads of meat.. Great food and great fun! We were in Naples for a National Championship football tournament and stumbled upon the Black Forest while planning to eat at a neighboring restaurant. It was just after the dinner rush, so they were able to easily take our large group 20-25ppl. The chef, Claus, delivered dish after dish of authentic german foods cooked to perfection. The service was quick and friendly. Everyone in the group was surprised at how much fun it made the night to be treated like family at the Black Forest. Highly recommend. The food was quite good, the service was good. I would recommend BFM if you are in the mood for German. The rice pudding was a tad under cooked and the carrot cake was definitely store bought. This is our favorite restaurant. Our waitress ,Kelly, gives impeccable service and is well acquainted with the menu and preparation of all the dishes. You will not get better in Germany because it is authentic, dishes made to order and at a very reasonable price. My husband I are " foodies' ,we are from New Jersey and go into NYC very often. I expected this to be much better and I probably won't return. We had veal wiener schnitzel and the mixed grill, a bottle of white wine and the apple strudel. Once the wine was poured the waiter said that, to keep it cold, he would put it in the refrigerator in the kitchen. But then he forgot about it and we had to ask to have our glasses filled, repeatedly. The strudel was excellent and apparently homemade in the restaurant. The spaetzel and red cabbage were also excellent. What was not excellent was most of the meat and the vegetables. The vegetables were mush. So over cooked that they had the texture of canned green beans. The lamb chops though ordered medium-rare, were tough and had no seasoning (I expected garlic at least). Same for the pork chop-hard as a rock and tasteless. The sausages were more tasty but dry, again due to overcooking. The veal was a little better but we agreed that we have had much better in a number of other restaurants. There aren't many German restaurants in Naples and our hopes were high but this was very average and, except for the strudel, I see no reason to hurry back. read more

Had a wonderful dinner at Black Forest tonight. Veal and pork schnitzel were both yummy. Cooked perfectly , light breading and flavorful . Red cabbage sweet and tangy. Spätzle just like grandma made. House salad had a creamy dressing with a little tang. Greens crisp and cold . Apple strudel for dessert was rich and warm with plenty of apples and raisins accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Great selection of beers and wine. This is a very quaint little gem. The atmosphere was nice & relaxed & the staff were all very friendly. The service was fast especially considering the food was made from scratch. The potato pancakes appetizer was delicious and came with both sour cream and apple sauce on the side. The chicken schnitzel with baked apples & brie was to die for & my boyfriend ordered the the Jaeger schnitzel and cleaned his plate. They spaetzle & red cabbage that came with both our dishes were also delicious. We will definitely be going back. The Black Forest Restaurant was great! However, when we walked in we were the only ones there. I felt sad since the food at this place was so authentic and delicious and no one was there. Maybe it was just an off day? Anyways, I had the Jagerschnitzel which was delicious and the bratwurst for an appetizer, which was also very good. The best was the Black Forest Cake which was homemade and was filled with delicious whip cream and fresh cherries. The chocolate cake itself was to die for. I truly recommend the Black Forest cake and Jagerschnitzel! I am definitely coming back the next time I'm in southwest Florida! read more

It almost pained me to give this restaurant 5 stars because I think 5 stars should be reserved for cutting edge culinary artists and committed, sophisticated restaurants. I gave it 5 stars because in 5 decades of eating at German restaurants I have never eaten at one that I liked. Not a single one in 5 decades of life has been able to produce anything above one or two stars. German cuisine is often corrupted by addlepated home-cooking dreamers, obvious alcoholics, or Alemanic head cases that over-think, uninspire, and have at best a passive-aggressive attitude toward their diners. I've been to expensive German restaurants that re-heated via microwave their signature strudels, served home-made "beer" that should have been labeled "emetic" instead of beer, and have over-indulged in portion control and embarrassingly cheap presentation for their schnitzels drowned in Knorr chemical sauces and margarine slathered canned side dishes. None of these places hesitated to charge top dollar for their "authentic German cuisine." Black Forest gets 5 stars because from the moment I walked in, the place smelled like a restaurant in a foreign country. Don't ask what that is. It's subjective I know, and it's not a bad thing at all. The cooking and saucing techniques are old school but well done. I haven't seen a hunters sauce in a restaurant in 30 years. It was great. The decor is dominated by a wainscotting made of wood paneling (ugh) and someone had strung white twinkle lights along the upper part of the paneling... whatever... What won me over and saved the day with the decor (and I mean this) is that there were REAL flowers in a bud vase on the table. REAL FLOWERS. Do you hear that restaurant owners of every stripe? REAL FLOWERS makes up for a lot of ugly paneling. Now. On to the things that matter to the less neurotic. The food is reasonably priced and absolutely delicious. We had a spicy and a non spicy sausage appetizer that came with some mustards and sauerkraut and both were wonderful. We had plain and smoked salmon adorned potato pancakes and they were also quite delicious. The Warstheimer (sp?) pilsner was quite good, and it was "Schnitzel Fest" so all of their schnitzels were being offered for $15 which was spectacular. I had veal, others had chicken and pork and my brother had the roast pork special. Every bite of everything was fantastic. The sweet red cabbage and spaetzel were great and I'm only sorry that we got appetizers because we didn't have room for dessert. The schnitzel tasted like it was fried in butter. If it wasn't, I was fooled. The meat was tender and flavorful and I ordered a piccata sauce to go with it. It was plentiful and delicious. The waitress was kind, smart, funny, helpful, and professional. She made helpful suggestions and didn't miss a beat in servicing the table. The owner (I think) came by and in a very understated manner checked in with the table. Our whole family had a great experience, and we are excited to return. Excellent food, service and atmosphere! We started off tonight with the crispy potato pancake appetizer. The pancakes were delicious, and so was the apple sauce and sour cream that accompanied them. We ordered a variety of foods-the Jaegerschnitzel was tasty with the nice mushroom gravy along with the spatzle and red cabbage. I brought some home for tomorrow. My hubby had the bratwurst platter with sauerkraut and loved it. Another person had the Schnitzel Weiner Style, also delicious. The Schnitzel Piccata has a lovely tasty sauce. Finally, from the kids menu a big hotdog was had and enjoyed. We finished off the dinner with a complimentary strudel given to each guest. The vanilla ice cream and whipped cream served with it were also scrumptious. I almost forgot the warm German bread and warm rolls served with butter when we first arrived. Our water glasses were never empty, my husband's Weissbier was cold and tasty. The decaf coffee tasted as though it had just been brewed. If you are looking for excellent service along with excellent food, look no further. Try to make reservations, the place was packed. I went to Black Forest tonight (yes, they are now open again on Mondays!). Chef Monica had a Bavarian meatball special which is to die for!! Now I know what you are thinking, "Why would I go to a German restaurant for meatballs?" I'll tell you why, they were some of the best meatballs I have ever had!! I have tried almost everything on the menu, and these meatballs just solidify how amazing the food is. Whether ordering traditional, or the specials, you can never go wrong. To top it off, the service is always amazing, helpful, and friendly. This combination of service and food makes Black Forest hands down one of the best places in Naples!!
