On our way back home from Santa Cruz, our plan was to find a Black Bear Diner and have a late afternoon breakfast. We are fans of the restaurant chain, and it wasn't too hard to locate this one just off the freeway. What we enjoy about Black Bear Diners are, that they serve American style food and pride themselves in serving hearty, home cooked meals offering a large menu selection that should tempt just about anyone's taste preference. This place wasn't too busy, but seemed short handed. Our waitress Ernestina was very nice as she took our orders. I got the Shasta Scramble: avocado, spinach, tomato, onion, bell pepper & jack cheese, sour dough toast and hash browns, along with an orange juice which contained pulp, meaning it was freshly squeezed! Everything was prepared just the way I liked it! Joe K ordered the Deluxe Tri-Tip Dip: Seasoned tri-tip stacked on a grilled Tribeca® ciabatta hero roll with grilled onion, mushroom & Swiss cheese along with his choice of onion rings. We came here on a busy Sunday morning. We got seated right away since it was a big place. We've been here a couple of time before with our two toddlers we love it because of their breakfast menu for the kids as well as for the adults. We ordered country chicken fried steak and it came with very big two biscuits. No wonder this thing is about 2,000 plus calories but it was delicious according to my husband. I got myself chicken sausage scrambled with fresh jalapeno added. They were very generous with jalapeños which I love cuz I like my food spicy. I got kids pancakes and side of Bacons for my kids. My son wanted both bacons and sausages so the server suggested he can do half and half. Normally it comes with 4 bacons so I got 2 and 2 for my son and he was happy. Overall the food quality and the service was great it was fairly fast and he came and check on us a couple of times to see if we need anything. We tried Black Bear Diner in Tracy and upon seating down were told to hurry up and order since the kitchen was closing. This was about 8:30 pm on a Saturday night. Totally off putting by the waitress. Her words verbatim, "We don't have time to wait for people to order when we want to close." She created an off experience. We had a good dinner here last night on our way home to the Bay Area. Our server, Paula was very friendly and talkative, and did a great job. We ordered the Ruben sandwich with salad and the turkey and gravy on an open faced sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy! They food came out quickly and nice and hot! The onions were really hot and crispy! We've driven past Tracy and this diner for years and never stopped to eat there. So glad we did this time! The menu was torn and old. Order incorrect. I ordered toast with no butter. It had butter on it. Potatoes were tasteless partly my fault because I declined pepper and onion. Chicken fried steak was good but the gravy was off. Eggs overcooked. My husband's hash browns weren't good. The biscuit was dry. Waitress didn't smile. There were only a few people there and we waited for her and our food. Both waitress and cashier didn't ask how our food was. They must have known. We try this place about every five years. Starving, looking for a familiar place as I left the bay area, the Black Bear Diner towered above all else and I was taking the exit. I was in before the Saturday night dinner rush, seated immediately and a glass of Iced tea awaited my lips. I've always liked the BB a good selection of comfort food and a good serving size for the price. They still rely on their proven homestyle meals and tried and true scratch recipes. Well I'd like to think so...Turkey club sandwich with fries and a side of cole slaw. A plateful of food that "hit the spot". They roast their turkey not a pre-cooked deli roll. Fries were plentiful and the cole slaw actually a good one. Over the years I've enjoyed quite a few items off the menu, breakfast is always a favorite for me too. We needed to stop for breakfast on a road trip and pulled it on and it's right off the highway so that was very convenient. When we walked in, they were greeted and seated. Our waitress came and took our order pretty quickly. Our food only took about 15 minutes to come out. The outdoor seating was perfect albeit on the windy side just because of the location which was right next to the freeway. The servers were friendly but anytime we needed anything, we had to flag them down. When we asked for extra plates since we were sharing some of our dishes, it took them over 10 minutes and our food was getting cold. One of us just ended up walking into the restaurant to grab the plates ourselves. The same went for when it came to needing napkins. They didn't see me waving and I had to walk up to one of the bus boys to ask him if we could have some extra. They were super nice but the follow up was not there. As for the food itself? Average.. California Omelette (480 cals.) Avocado, mushroom & jack cheese: This one was pretty straight forward but nothing special. I added in some Tapatio sauce because I love my spice. The hash browns were also decent and we chowed down because we were hungry. French Toast with freshly sliced strawberries and whipped cream on top: These were quite good and can easily be shared with 2 people. The french toast itself drizzled with their maple syrup hit the spot. And the strawberries with whipped cream was just icing on the cake. The food itself gets cold really fast since it's outdoor dining here so If I had a tip, eat fast and don't wait for servers to grab you anything if you need it. I came in on 12/15 in the morning, with my husband and my 2 kids, mind you 1 needed a booster and the other was in a car seat, got seated at a table with chairs. We asked to be seated at a booth TWICE and the girls up front were not accommodating and all they were doing was talking and laughing and staring at their damn ipad. We have gone to this location many, many times and have never had any issues before; We went there today and had a male server that for the first time, and he wouldn't acknowledge me or look at me and ONLY my Asian husband; he also kept talking to my husband ONLY and calling him SIR directly, as if he was purposely trying to ignore me and treated me like my simple presence offended him and he couldn't be bothered to address me in any way; I deal with this at my male dominated work (so I know what this treatment is), I don't want to deal with this when I am simply trying to eat and relax; then, I get my food and the burger was the most disgusting I have EVER had! Overall: a good place to stop and refuel yourself when you're on a long drive with plenty of options but not somewhere I would actively seek to eat at. Needed a pit stop on a long drive and there happened to be a black bear diner on the side of the freeway. They have their own parking lot which is always a bonus and helps relieve the parking anxiety. Service was efficient and nice, no complaints. Lots of options on the menu which was a bit overwhelming but something for everyone. Food: would say average in general. Got the fish and chips and my friend the chicken tenders. Fish and chips did have a crispy batter but other than texture everything else wasn't noteworthy. Fish was pretty fishy and tarter sauce was very mayo heavy. It has been awhile since we have eaten at this Black Bear Diner. At one time it was one of the best; but, this time, not so much. This many be due to staffing issues. The same woman took our order, delivered our meals, and operated the payment unit as we left. We were seated immediately. I asked for a booth next to a window. My wife ordered a cheeseburger with fries and I ordered Parmesan Sourdough Cheeseburger without tomato and with a house salad in place of fries. I watched our waitress write the order in her note book. My wife's cheeseburger arrived as ordered. My cheeseburger was delivered with fries and without the salad. When I reminded our waitress of the salad, she apologized and said she would get it. Several minutes later she delivered food to a nearby table and looked at our table and hurried away. A few minutes later she brought the salad. By then I had eaten three quarters of my cheeseburger. My wife really liked her messy cheeseburger and her fries were just right. As usual with Black Bear Diners, the fries passed the good-when-cold test. My Parmesan Sourdough Cheeseburger was very good. The sautéed onions had just the proper amount of crunch. The salad was a near failure. The lettuce was wet and the thousand island dressing was thin like some had added milk to it. The discussion next time we drive over the Altamont Pass will be: do we get a steak at the roadhouse, stop at this Black Bear Diner, or drive a few more minutes to the Black Bear Diner in Manteca. read more
