You can never go wrong with Black Bear Diner for breakfast (I have not been there for lunch or dinner yet). Their pancakes are fluffy and delicious, their eggs are eggs lol and if you choose a meat side I highly recommend the homemade Italian sausage (mild or spicy). The service is always great and the atmosphere is fun!! If you are in the area check them out!! My daughter recommended this place since she was working as a door dasher and found this place appealing regardless of being dismissed by a server. Ironically that server was our server around 11am Sunday. The place is busy, the hostesses bounced around eye contact with each other for an awkward moment on who will do something. We are sat within 3-5 mins by the gorgeous patio sunlight. I was told the ac comes in and out so it's pretty warm in there. The skirt steak is a fighter with the knife lol. I won eventually. The biscuit is the big king of the hill as it casted a shadow on my face. I gave away the fruit but kept the grapes. I'm not a fan of melon. The sunny side up eggs are 100% beautifully executed. I tried the sweet potatoes fries and it was a thin crisp skin met with a sweet creamy bite inside. I forgot to ask for cold water and wasn't offered as some servers do. Plating is very appealing. Huckleberry lemonade is tasty and refreshing. Mashed potatoes are seasoned well with a peppery taste and gravy is perfect. Chicken fried steak was extremely satisfying and the fish was light and flaky. Tarter sauce had sweet pickles or relish so was not a hit for any of us. The chicken and waffles were really good. Not satisfied at all after visiting twice after my initial review. This specific Black Bear Diner really needs to improve; and fast, before they go under. The restaurant has a very nice atmosphere and decor, but the service and food are lacking severely. I visited on a Sunday, not busy at all. Waited maybe 30 minutes for our food to come out and our waitress did not come back a single time to ask for any refills. We also overheard another table that was also bothered by the wait time. Our server let us know all items were served all day besides the ones with a star. It took a minute to decide what to order, but I knew I wanted breakfast! After dining here for over 2 years since it first opened in late 2022 but couldn't get seated since there's so much hype I'd only recommend getting the breakfast items like pancakes, waffles, French toast, biscuits, bacon, hot sausage, ham and huckleberry lemonade. Their dinner stuff like the pot roast,turkey dinner and seafood is just average. The dessert selection is OK too. Their banana cream pie and bread pudding are my recommendations. The service is either hit or miss. Black Bear Diner gets packed in morning for breakfast on Sundays like usual but slows down at supper time. But you can get breakfast all day just like at IHOP or Cracker Barrel down the street near Goliad. read more

Christmas lunch was terrible! After being seated, our waiter, Michael was very attentive and apologetic. My daughter and I ordered our meals. I ordered the SPC LT Holiday Turkey Dinner which was a disaster. First of all, I understand the restaurant was very busy on this Christmas day. Anyway, my dressing was cold, the mashed potatoes were also cold and the toasted bread I ordered was white, not brown toast, so I sent the whole plate back. My new meal plate arrived, everything was correct except the toasted bread which seemed old and not fresh. I am a diabetic, was looking forward to a great Christmas meal but unfortunately the meal was terrible with exception of the green beans that were tasty. I ordered dessert but after the meal fiasco, I changed my mind and cancel dessert. My daughter ordered one SPC Holiday Prime Rib, medium rare. Her plate arrived with blood running in the mashed potatoes and her plate was cold as well. She sent it back. The new meal came and the cut of steak resembled a porter house steak. At first, from the shape of that steak. I thought it was liver! My daughter sent that meal plate back and ordered one DIN Pot Roast, which included 2 very large stalks of celery and large hard carrot cuts. Again, another fiasco. I felt sad for our waiter Michael because we did not want him to feel like it was his fault that the meals were cold and not properly made. Next, my daughter ordered a dessert, bread pudding, what a hoot!! The bread pudding arrived cold, served in an aluminum tin bowl, no caramel drizzle, no dollop of whip cream on top, looking nothing like the photo on their menu, of course we declined to keep the dessert also. So after speaking with one of the managers, she was very sympathetic to our meal fiasco and gave us some Bear Bucks ($25) to redeem and we thanked her. NOW, receiving the bill (laughing, laughing) our bill total was $109.42!!!! (Ha, ha, ha) We checked the receipt and after the $103.96 discount and adding the $25 Bear Bucks, our total was $5.90!! (Wala!!) Now, after carefully checking our receipt before paying the bill, we went over the meal items and my daughter was charged for Two SPC Holiday Prime Rib dinners at $59.98 each when she only ordered one SPC Holiday Prime Rib dinner, but one of the dinners was subtracted (minus) from the receipt. After this Christmas fiasco, we stopped at Jack-in-the Box and got tacos, etc. RECOMMEDATION: ALWAYS check your receipt before paying at any meal establishment. Inform management of any difficulties with your meal instead of eating and disliking the meal or not liking the meal and still paying for a meal you did not like and silently complaining after you still paid for the meal, that's why managers are present to assist the customer. read more

I've never heard of Black Bear Diner before, but apparently it's a chain that originated on the west coast. I loved the decor with all the bear motifs inside and outside. Food-wise, I think people enjoy the "large" portion sizes, but I personally don't think the quality is as good as actual standalone diners. (It is a chain restaurant, of course.) I got the California omelette with a side of fresh fruit. The omelette itself has avocado on top, with mushroom and cheese inside. It wasn't the best omelette I've ever tasted, but it also wasn't terrible. The fruit was surprisingly fresher than I expected, but the biscuit was quite dry and crumbly. For the overall quality of the meal, I thought it was overpriced ($13.25). The food itself is filling, but you can also tell that it's not the healthiest. Service was prompt and efficient. I probably won't return as I'm not a huge fan of diners to begin with. And this chain diner surely did not impress me by any means. read more

My friend sent her young daughter for some change and the old lady had so much attitude when telling her no they couldn't give out change (was going towards the waitress tip!) that it literally had her daughter on the verge of tears. Then the grandpa got sent over to sort it out and AGAIN this old rude ass lady gave even MORE attitude telling him no they don't do that. Then when speaking to the manager aside from saying he was confused why she didn't do it because it is something they can do? he seemed very nonchalant about it all which was even more frustrating. I told the waiter that her meal was cold and he apologized and said he would talk to the manager. He came back and thanked us for visiting and hope to see us again. The young lady with glasses who apparently is the front help, decided to finally do their job and took over for Kevin in submitting a name and phone number seemed to lack the knowledge to use the software and definitely lacks the ability to listen. Love, love, love this place. It has this satisfying diner-feel, great lighting. I usually come before a quiz or exam in the morning and do some last minute prepping. But whenever my boyfriend is in town, we make sure to come in on a weekend because he loves this place, too! Service is always great and food is always DELICIOUS! Was surprised to see the female that met me was pulling multiple roles at the time of my visit; she greeted me, sat me and was also my server. With that said, she was great and very attentive while balancing all the roles I just mentioned. Dining room and bathrooms were clean. The layout of the dining room is divided into by a partition wall that allows to see across the entire area but requires guests on the right side (smaller area) to either walk completely around the entire or cut through the hostess/register area. Prices are fair but the food was very oily/greasy to the point that my grits and plate had pools of it throughout. Aside from that, everything taste awesome and the bacon, sausage and ham were cooked perfectly. Pancakes are some of the best I've had as well; the warm syrup takes them up another notch. The menu is extensive, which is expected of a diner. The coffee is good and served in a decent size mug. I also like that each table has a great variety of condiments. Came to black bear to enjoy a nice birthday breakfast. We came around 10am on a Friday and it was quite busy. There's ample parking so we didnt have issues with that. We were luckly seated right away. Our server was great and quick with drinks. I love that they offer fresh orange juice! We decided to get the bear's Choice which was large enough for us to share. In my opinion, the only thing keeping this location open is the chefs in the back. The food is absolutely delicious and huge, which if you're from Texas that's something we all know and love lol. But the management and service is not great. Very disorganized and dirty. We received dirty silverware, but it's OK cause I carry cleaning wipes with me. (Stay ready so you don't gotta get ready lol) The lady that took our order wrote our order in the back of a receipt paper. It took us about 15 minutes to get sat down when there was no one wait. Food is quality, comfort diner food and the wait staff are very nice. However, the restaurant is not dog friendly at all, in fact I would say that they are pet HOSTILE! We came with our dog on Friday and told that they only allow dogs on the weekends when they open the patio. Understandable. We returned the next day, Saturday with our dog and were humiliated by the hostess yelling at us that they only allow service animals. I explained that we had been told just the day before that dogs were allowed on the weekends when they open the patio. The hostess continued to yell at me " no dogs, no dogs, no dogs. I can get the GM no dogs." I respect that dogs are not welcome but feel being yelled at in front of other costumers and being told Friday that dogs are ok on the weekends only to show up on Saturday and get yelled at for having a dog is not right. Wasn't too long of a wait for a Saturday morning so that was nice! We checked in and waited for probably less than 15 minutes. We ordered the chocolate chip pancakes, which I was a bit confused why they came with a few on the top rather than cooking it into the pancake. My bf got "burn baby burn" which was a chicken fried steak with pickled onions on a biscuit. The steak was meatloaf essentially. Biscuit was huge! Tasted really good. However the bad towns were still frozen a bit and cold. Also, we both ordered over medium eggs and they were super liquidy.. so definitely more of an over easy, which isn't bad but it just wasn't what we ordered. A few days before going my buddy went to a location in CA and raved about it! He told us about the SA locations, so we decided to try it. Walking in the place was loud and busy, a fun atmosphere! We were greeted right away and taken to our table. The waitress arrived a few minutes later to take our drink orders and returned with them quickly. We did not have our food picked by then so asked for a few more minutes... Those few minutes were like 10-12 minutes, we ordered our food and waited another 20 minutes to receive it. I ordered the CFS breakfast with grits. The CFS was like straight out of a freezer package from Costco or something, the grits I had were a bit watery, very lumpy and just not good... but a humongous portion! The eggs were good and the biscuit was good with some jam. My wife ordered the 1 egg plate with bacon. The eggs were good and cooked to her liking, the has browns were really good, crispy on the outside an tender on the inside. She did upgrade to the waffle from the biscuit and it was quite disappointing... Very dense and little flavor. Overall nice place but service and food are lacking IMO... Being from Alaska, I was really looking forward to this place. I was missing the style and decor. A few of my colleagues and I ordered for lunch from their website and I went to pick it up. I set the pick up time for 11:15 and arrived on the dot . My first impression was that they do not keep to-go orders under a warmer; they are left in a brown bag on the counter. I don't know how long our food was waiting, but that explains the room temperature dishes. This also includes a salad that they put in the same bag with hot dishes. Why would someone do this? To make matters worse with the salad, they didn't include the dressing, even though the hostess told me everything was in the bag. Dry lettuce for lunch! But now, let's chat about my entree - the meatloaf... it's pretty much inedible. I took a few bites to put something in my stomach; but it's really dry (probably a few days old if I had to guess). I noticed they add celery and carrots to their meatloaf too - eww. If the meat was any good, you wouldn't need that much filler. Essentially, I paid $12.37 for mashed potatoes and a burnt and dry onion ring. The coleslaw was warmer than room temp, and it was bitter. I know my standards for food are very low; and taste is subjective. But of the three of us that ordered here for the first time, we all came to the same consensus of having no desire to return.
