First time here today, our wait time is 25-30 minutes, we stayed since my friend and her kids eats here often, our 30mins wait prolonged go an hour but the upsetting fact is that they seat groups that arrived after us, so I have to asked them TWICE if we already have a table. Everything on our order was messed up! Our meats were as hard as rubber, they put onions to a NO ONIOn burger that we order, worst the steak knife that they gave me has a paper sticked on it, i tried taking it off but it won't. Worst experience ever, worst customer service, food not worth the price and wait! Not recommending this and def won't be dining there again! read more

Man, I use to love coming here but the last two times we've been here was a complete nightmare. Tonight we walked in at 6:45pm and we were addressed by a girl saying "she'd be right with us" but then makes a comment to another girl working there.. "this one's going to be fun" as we're standing there with our two toddlers. The disrespect and unprofessionalism is absurd. Not only did we wait 10 mins to be seated but nobody addressed us after she made that comment, so we walked out and went to another establishment. The staff at Black Bear are beyond rude, classless, and 100% unprofessional. I'd rather make the drive to Monterey. Get it together Salinas staff. Do better. read more

I had breakfast on a weekday , zero wait time . Our waitress was extremely friendly and checked on us multiple times . I had the 2 eggs choice with the bacon . The bacon is delicious, I like the thickness of it . However , I wish the hash browns were a bit crispier . But I would definitely recommend, awesome service and good food . read more

This was our firs time at this Black Bear and Service and food were both excellent. We had to wait 15 minutes to be seated but once we were the waiter was right there and after the order was taken the food came out quickly, hot and delicious as well as more than we could consume. We will return soon!!! read more

Well, came in post hike, on a sunday brunch time... found a seat at the bar right away (thank goodness) I had the biscuit and gravy plate with the eggs (scrambled of course), and bacon. Topped of with coffee and water. First of all, for a chain restaurant the gravy is really good- it ain't cracker barrel, but hey- welcome to the west coast. The Biscuits are HUGE!!!!!! Certainly something to write home about. The service was great, and I even got a to go cup of coffee. A wonderful pit stop on the way back from Pinicles for sure! read more

My wife and I came in in Saturday morning, got seated in less then 5 minutes. Lisa sat us got our drinks and not even ten minutes later on a very busy Saturday morning our food was served to us hot and fresh. If you haven't came to eat here I recommend you stop by and ask for Lisa, she is a great server and her nails are to die for. read more

First timing going here. Went at 10AM on a Saturday and the crowd to get seated was already quite big. We were told the wait would be 30 min, and we ended up getting called in a little before that time frame. There was some seating in the lobby while we waited nearly 30 min. Our server was nice and friendly. Menus were interesting as they were printed on what looked like a newspaper. Selection was massive. Really lots to choose from and ways to customize a breakfast. For the price, portion sizes were HUGE. My husband and I easily split one of the bigger breakfast plates and still couldn't finish every bite. They were nice enough to bring out two plates for us with the portion already split, so that was nice. Pancakes were yummy. I felt like my eggs were slightly undercooked for how I had asked them to prepare it but nothing too bad. Ham and bacon were also good. The coffee was just how I like it, not burnt tasting. Overall for the price and the portion size, it's a good place to check out if you're craving a big breakfast. Definitely a good place to go if going with family. read more

The waitress was talking very softly and I asked her to repeat the options and she rolled her eyes and said it again. I then asked again what the last option was and she rolled her eyes again and sighed. I then said I'm sorry I have a hard time hearing. Lisa, the waitress immediately took a step back and said hey I'm just waking up and I'm not going to serve you and she said he can serve you, referring to her coworker. We ended up leaving. Great place to go for a Burger I ordered the Grilled parmesan sourdough burger. It was a really nice change. Husband tried the Western BBQ Burger with bacon. .. Also a side salad. My sister and I went for breakfast and were told that "it would be a few minutes". Multiple groups of parties walked in and were seated right away. Not one individual that worked there checked to ask anything. Customer service is horrible and ridiculous. We immediately left bc it was clear the young girl in the front had no idea what she was doing. DO NOT RECOMMEND! I'm sure they need individuals with more experience and better management. read more

It was my hubbys first tim there & didn't end with a good impression. Waited for our food for almost 45 mins on a slow afternoon & received my protein burger & my hubbys omelette. On his country potatoes were over cooked & on my food their was a HAIR!! the server didn't come by to ask if every thing was ok until I had finished my burger. which later that day made me have an upset stomach. She was busy talking to her other go workers... then she camed & asked if everything was ok & I told her there was a hair in my fruit. Absolutely slammed but great. I think it was a weekend morning and I went in to see how long the wait would be. Luckily, there was room at the counter, so we sneaked in and had a lovely meal. My beloved and I are long time fans of Black Bear and have grown accustomed to their level of service. This was our first time at their Salinas location. The food was up to Black Bear standards and certainly satiated my Black Bear appetite. What stood out most this time was our server, Noel's, Black Bear Service. For more honest reviews check my profile thanks I never went to the old place, but every time I go here it's on a weekend.i usually sit at the bar and everything is always on point. If it's two or more coming on the weekend expect a 20 to 40 minute wait to be seated, everyone is here or at IHOP. Food is bomb, service is bomb. read more

One of my favorite breakfast spots because the food is just a bang for your buck. Great taste, good quality and big portions. And a huge shout out to the manager. Every time I come here I see him running around with a friendly smile on his face. No matter how many time we stop him to ask for napkins or more coffee he always has a bright smile on his face. Many times he's training people or waiting on tables himself when they are busy. When I see a manager get down and step in during busy times it's admirable! Today he was sweet enough to give my son a sundae for his bday. You rock! Awesome service as always. Restaurant is always busy but the food is always on point and quick service. This diner is great. Huge sandwiches lots of meat and the sweet potato fries were some of the best I've ever had. Be sure to take it vantage of the free bear claw. It's literally about as big as a bears paw. If you're near one of these they're worth the stop. read more

If you are going on a weekend morning anticipate a long wait. They're usually pretty busy and seat by a waitlist like most diners. Their food and service however makes up for the wait! It's a good amount of food for the price you pay, you're guaranteed to get full! The staff is quick and very attentive. Big portions, but lacking in taste. Got the chicken fried steak dinner while friend got the eggs benedict. Presentation was fine but everything needed more flavor. My cousin got over easy eggs but they came underdone with the egg whites still very runny, the waitress said they come that way but it was obviously undercooked. They were nice and were able to fix it. I'd prob skip out on this place. Unless you like covering your food in salt and pepper to get any kind of flavor. read more

History

Established in 1995.

In 1861 a gold prospector named Sisson fell in love with and opened an inn in Strawberry Valley - a quaint mountain meadow at the foot of Mt. Shasta, California, frequented by black bears and people alike. The friendly atmosphere and large portions of homestyle food became their standard, so when Bob and Laurie Manley and their partner Bruce Dean opened the first Black Bear Diner on that in 1995, they were determined to rekindle the same hospitality lavished upon early Strawberry Valley guests. The menu, service, and decor were designed to remind guests of a time when life was a little simpler, and service and quality were the cornerstones of business. Although we've grown from a single location in Mt. Shasta to 150+ restaurants, all are dedicated to the same simple concepts.

In 1995, founders Bob & Laurie Manley, along with founding partner Bruce Dean, created the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, California. They chose the name Black Bear Diner because the legendary black bear is native to the Mt. Shasta area. A whole coffee carafe was left on our table which was a bit of a surprise and the orange juice as advertised tasted freshly squeezed. Before ordering our food, my husband began asking the waiter about gluten free pancakes or waffles (since such was advertised online in a review from 11yrs ago) and before he could even finish the question the waiter cut him off to explain all the pancake and waffle options. My husband kindly asked again and was told they didn't have any specific gluten free options. That's ok, he ordered their Bacado omelette and instead of toast on the side he asked for a side of fruit. I ordered their Cinnamon Bread French Toast and a side of 1 scrambled egg and 1 sausage. I was told the sausage only comes in 2 or 4, and so I chose 2. When the food arrived, I immediately thought this all looks ok. And the taste was just the same. The omelette was not fluffy like you'd expect a highly rated restaurant omelette to be. The side of fruit came in a condiment cup and had 1 grape as well as 3 pieces of other fruit. The hash browns were sad looking, pretty pale and absolutely no crunch. My husband even added salt which was sad and rare to watch him do. My French toast was ok, kind of soggy and didn't have any caramelization or crunch on the outside whatsoever. It's definitely cinnamon toast vs a cinnamon roll French toast and was nothing special. The sausage was the best part which says a lot. I wouldn't come back here because there's infinitely better options minutes away.

The longanisa must be a favorite at the restaurant but it wasn't my favorite. It's a little too lean to be an authentic longanisa. I needed the fatty sweetness of it. Lol. None the less we enjoy this place.

It was just kind of crazy and personally I think a hostess is an important position you can't just not have. I highly recommend when the diner is at capacity to have a staff member stop what they are doing and focus solely on the hostess stand.
