    Grilled Chicken Salad w/buffalo sauce
    Lucy M.

We've been wanting to try Black Bear and finally had the chance last weekend. When we got there around 1:30pm on a Sunday we were told the wait would be 35 minutes, while not ideal we decided to wait it out. It ended up being only 10 minutes to our surprise which was great! However, once we got seated that's when the real wait started. It took foreverrr to get our food. I'm not sure why because the restaurant wasn't that busy. Our waitress was a little odd and wasn't that great at communicating to the point where we were speaking for her just to help her out. I think a little confidence training would go a long way. Our meals finally came out and when they did I was told to my surprise they didn't have any more crispy chicken for my salad. I think telling me as our food came out wasn't the move, as maybe I would have picked something else? Either way the waitress told me I was getting grilled chicken and that was that. For a place that specializes in home cooked meals I don't think running out of chicken fingers is ideal for business. However, my salad was very big and fresh despite the chicken conundrum and I was only able to finish maybe 1/3 of it. My husband had the fried chicken, which should have been amazing, however the breading was really thick and the chicken was funny. You know how that is when the chicken is just weird - that's how it was. He also had homestyle potatoes because they didn't have mashed potatoes (also strange) and they were not good. They were mostly burnt and had a funny taste. Overall I think this place may have potential however the service and the cooks in the back have some work to do. I think for tourists passing through looking for a home cooked meal this place will do the trick, but for locals looking for a place to eat I'd pick somewhere else. Pro tip - the hot sauces on the table are pretty good!

Biscuits and Gravy was super good but we waited an hour for our food. The waiter brought a muffin to tide us over the wait was long:(

Since we hadn't been here in five years, I mentioned to our waiter how much I was craving a bowl, and he went out of his way to make it happen. That level of service alone made the visit memorable. I also ordered the Velvet Smoke mezcal cocktail, and wow, it was exceptional. Smooth, perfectly balanced, and not too strong. The smoky notes were present but not overpowering, and the nixta slate liqueurs, or heat and bitters brought everything together beautifully. Great service, great drinks, and a team that's willing to go the extra mile. Definitely worth the stop.

I particularly enjoyed the restricted gates down by the washrooms. Our server was friendly and attentive but the restaurant seemed slightly short staffed. A great selection of beers. Our food was very good. I was surprised at how salty the bun was on my veggie burger sandwich but it was still salty in a good way. The food took longer than average to come out, and that's the reason for the 4 out of 5 stars. We waited over 30 minutes for the food, and it didn't seem particularly busy, though the server seemed to be covering a lot of acreage with tables both inside and outside under her responsibility. She still did a great job, though. I look forward to stopping in again the next time we're passing through town.

I don't think there was anything wrong with the cook of the food, but the seasonings were just way off base to me. The Corned Beef was slathered with a Mustard Crème sauce that should have been served on the side. Some may like it, others will hate it. I didn't care for it. Cabbage seemed to be braised in a heavy Cayenne Pepper broth. It was inedible. The Champs were so bland that you had to shake the hell put of the Salt and Pepper. The Corned Beef without the Mustard sauce was actually pretty good, but so much was slathered with the mustard sauce that it just isn't worth ordering. Bottom line, here is how it breaks down: Service: 5/5. The bartender tonight was exceptional! Food: 3/5 at best due to the second entree ordered (fish & chips) being REALLY GOOD. Overall: 4-5*. The Fish & Chips saved this entire meal. There are a number of things to order from the menu at the bar. Obviously I would stay away from the CB, but I would definitely recommend the fish and chips! When I come back to Pueblo, I would definitely consider coming back here.

We weren't off to a great start when it took quite a while be be seated and there were many open tables. Once we sat down it still took a cool minute for anyone to come to the table. So for me to give five super stars say how good the food has to be to make up for the slow service. Chips and salsa are a telling sign on how good the food is and they more than passed the test with light chips and salsa so good I wanted to chug a gallon of it! Oh my gosh friends. I was blown away by how good the food was. I had the combo #7. Pork and guacamole, chicken and cream cheese enchilada, a fried flour shelled chicken taco, with rice and beans. I went for the mild medium green chili option and it had quite a kick! Next time, I'll stick to mild. Still, it didn't take away from how awesome it was. The taco was seriously the best taco I've ever had in my life! No kidding! I don't know how I'm going to be able to finish this review because I'm getting so hungry writing it. For dessert, I had a sopapilla. Sopapillas are one thing only a few restaurants can get just right. They should be light, airy, and puffy. These were kind of a combo of fry bread and puffy. Kinda' heavy and not too puffy, but the flavor was fantastic. They're on the pricy side at about $4.25 for one. It's good-sized, so you could spit it but you won't want to because it's so good! I believe it's a family-owned and operated restaurant, so that's super cool. Too bad I live in LA. If I lived in Pueblo I would be there all the time. Bookmark this place if you're ever passing through Pueblo. It's right of I-25 so you can have one of the best meals of your life and continue on your happy journey!
