We made an effort to find a Black Bear diner because in California we have never had a bad meal..so we drove 20 extra miles to eat in Newburg, Oregon. We both ordered the turkey plate and my husband added soup. We also ordered a child's meal. The child' meal came 20 minutes before our meal and the entire meal took at least 35 minutes to be served. The soup never was served and the turkey was terrible..it was thick and seemed old. One of the waitresses said they ran out of gravy.and they had to make more gravy.....it was only 6:30 PM. The turkey tasted like it was old, thick and I could not eat it. We did not complain at the time because we didn't want to make a scene..but if I was the owner of Black Bear inc. I would want to know that your reputation and this restaurant needs your help. When we travel we look for this restaurant..., somebody please pay a visit to Newburg and help them. read more

Quantity vs quality! Nothing special at least for breakfast. I suggest going to J's! Everything tasted like it was pre-made from a packet or box. I would compare the food to Shari's. read more

Got here at 10:30 on a saturday and waited an hour to get seated. When we got seated there was several empty booths. Extremely understaffed and very unprofessional to operate this way. read more

We agree Newberg needs a breakfast place...and we had high hopes for Black Bear, but sadly, it just didn't do it for us. Egg was good, bacon was saltier than usual, country potatoes had raw peppers and onions instead of cooked ones. The biscuit looked great, however there was no sweetness to it and it was heavy and cold. The wait staff were very professional and did a nice job. The coffee was good. We will come back one more time to try pancakes but we think they will be meh. Elmers has no worries!!! read more

I was so disappointed. We went for dinner, I was prepared to wait a bit due to the peak time. The restaurant was half full, there were about 8 groups waiting to be seated. There was 2 of us plus a 16mo old and we were told 20 minutes. They had at least 30 tables empty and we all sat there waiting. The manager looked like she could care less. People started leaving pissed, not because of a wait, but for waiting while staring at empty tables, upon empty tables. After 30 minutes we finally got seated. Our waitress Erika was very friendly. She saw we had a hungry 16 mo old and she quickly got our food out. My turkey pesto was horrible! Dry turkey with under fried soggy fries. My husband liked his chicken fried steak, I tried it, the gravy was really good and the steak was really tender. You should never make people wait that long while staring at a half empty restaurant. People would rather sit at a table and wait a little longer for food than that. That manager need some proper training. read more

Well, this is the third Black Bear Diner we've been too including Mt. Shasta and Madras and this one doesn't measure up. Service was slow and the food not nearly as good as what we've had multiple times in Madras. We wouldn't go back to this one. read more

We have enjoyed BBD during our travels. So we were disappointed when we ate at the Newberg BBD. The wait ness was very friendly--Isabelle. But our order which was pretty straightforward took almost an hour in a timeframe when the restaurant was not busy. I ordered eggs with biscuits and gravy with a sausage patty. I ordered two eggs over medium, I got two scrambled. I did not get the sausage until asking 3 times and it came as we were leaving. My wife's veggies were boiled long and hard-- no taste at all and the meatloaf was heavy on pepper. We have expected far better of our restaurants. A very disappointing experience. Overpriced. I was seated four feet from the squeaky kitchen door. It was slammed every time someone went through it wich was several times a minute. My chair was bumped into often. My burger was bland and obviously frozen. read more

Was a little disappointed. Ordered 2 pot pies and 2 fish and chips dinners. Both of the pies were cold in the center and my fish had some very tough meat inside. The cold slaw had no flavor at all. And they ran out of ice for our ice teas and lemonade. (It's 80 outside). I ate at Black Bear in Ogden, Utah, and it was amazing. Probably will not return. read more

People seated after us were served first. Took 15 minutes to just get water. Two of us received our food while our third person waited. We had to find the manager to get silverware and napkins. We had to ask the waitress to go and get our third person's food. The California omelette came with no avocado, which is one of the main ingredients! Never had our water refilled. Very very disappointed. We got coffee with no cream, then cream with no spoon, then food with no silverware, then an omelet with no avocado like advertised. It's annoying for us as customers to have to constantly ask for things. The tables should be set up so we don't have to. Especially during a breakfast rush. Not once did we get asked for a coffee refill. The omelets barely had any toppings. It was mostly egg. The toast wasn't even toasted and literally had butter on the very tip. Walking in, this diner has an open, family-friendly atmosphere. It is rather typical of a family breakfast and lunch diner. However, there was the issue of having approximately, 30 people waiting patiently in the waiting area. It was ridiculous with the number of employees milling around and 4 empty tables available, already bused and clean. We waited for roughly 50 minutes and and witnessed people leaving creating multiple empty tables. After these tables were bused and clean, very few of those in the waiting room were seated. This would be understandable if there were fewer workers or less obvious open tables. We also had the misfortune of being crossed off the list while still sitting and waiting. After finally being seated, we noticed 7 more empty tables open and unused. The waiter was quick and took our orders efficiently as well as making sure to bring our drinks out rather quickly. Another sad downfall was the quality of the food! One of our party got his steak and eggs. While the eggs were decent, the steak was a whole different story; it was well done, (when asked for medium rare), and gristle throughout making it nearly inedible. I, however, had the misfortune of ordering the rib eye which turned out to be an unrecognizable cut of meat, and only a mere quarter inch thick. It not only had gristle throughout, and was well done, but was also burnt with little to no seasoning. This tough and very dry piece of meat, needless to say, was inedible. The only redemption of my meal at least, was the vanilla shake which was tasty and enjoyable. I hope this helps others avoid this situation and that everyone reading this has a pleasant day. Second visit since they opened. First visit they only had a couple people and were slow but had just opened for the day. Food was fine. Great waitress This past Saturday we went in later and they had a lot of business but not packed at all. The guys behind us had their orders messed up but kept them. When ours came the hash browns weren't cooked barely browned and cold. The over medium eggs still had runny white and cold. The dry toast wasn't and was cold. The only good part was my bacon, which was cold but crispy. The big fix was to not charge us for the two coffees at $2.69 ea. I only ate my bacon and some of the new toast that was cold. My husband had ham & eggs with hashbrowns. His was also under cooked and cold. NOT A GOOD SHOWING and once again slow. My husband traveled to Madras weekly for years and they always had breakfast the Black Bear and it was NEVER a problem. Hope these guys get it together, not sure I want to go back anytime soon!! read more

I guess the best way to say this is, we've eaten at other Black Bear Diners. They were well worth the wait and the money. In Newberg, From the unpleasant young woman who took our name when we walked in, to the uncomfortable way-to-bright lighting, to the extended wait time for food (we were told they had 2 large tables-- I guess that means there was not enough skill to deal with any other tables in the place(?). When food finally did come? The tri-tip platter was less than 1/2 the portion of meat served in every other Black Bear Diner I've been to. We asked our server to be sure she'd placed an order for the tr-tip platter She had. The word from her manager was that the "meat was weighed. ". Wasn't sure what that meant except that they knew they were serving 1/2 portions at full price? The place needs better management read more

Yes it was a busy day...but wow don't go there with party over 4, well over hour long wait (we were told 20-30 minute wait)because seating person unorganized and obviously didn't know how to keep track and sit large parties. At one point everyone in waiting area had been sat but us! Never were we "touched" to let us know we hadn't been forgotten, which is how we felt. The food prep was slow, food was cold, mediocre at best. First person at our table got his cold side of sausage served 5 minutes before the rest of his meal came, and first person was done eating as last person at our table got served! Waitress was good though, she skiddadled her butt off for us knowing our long plight and hangry selves. She did as good as slow cooks would allow her to do. I gave one star because of her solid skills. I apologize for not getting her name and giving her kudos. Won't be going back. It was a 2 1/2 hr long adventure for 15 minutes of eating. Disappointing to say least. read more
