Scratched by the Bear We have gone to BBD many times. Overall, food is good, homey, and a good value. Today was something totally different. For a home style, American "diner" our waitress tarnished the shine on this warm restaurant. Not a smile. No niceties. No thank you. No 'anything else?' Even after we paid, the final comment was, as she picked up the receipt: "you are good to go". In our world of tablets, texting, and tech, what ever happened to the kindness of a diner? This has easily become a weekend family favorite. We love seeing the rare occasions when the black bear mascot greet their patrons and kiddos- it definitely makes the experience more special for the kids. The freshly squeezed Orange juice definitely keeps us coming back too, I never dont order a cup when I'm here! Not just that, but the massive breakfast portions are definitely something to write home about! I love their biscuits and gravy with spicy sausage, sausage is made in-house. The plate is massive and comes with eggs and hash browns/country potatoes. I get it with the country potatoes cooked well done- love it! Splash on some of their Black Bear chipotle hot house, and yes ma'am you are set! My husband has been on the beef dip sandwich lately which comes with a rich and savory au jus sauce and the bread for the sandwich is literally garlic bread, so yumm. Came on a thursday night. There were not many customers in, and we received our food quickly. The waiter was nice, but he made four mistakes in our order (we were given things we asked not to have). Portions are large. We were happy with our onion rings, pancakes, sausage, and french toast. This chain breakfast spot located near downtown Beaverton has become one of my go to spots to come back to when I want a big plate of pancakes or an easy American dinner. The server was hilarious this time I visited and I've never had a bad experience with any of the wait staff. The inside has family style seating between booths and tables, and it can get pretty packed inside on the weekends with a small wait sometimes. The food is tasty and the proportions are definitely worth the price. Overall, I would definitely recommend this spot if you want to grab breakfast, lunch, or dinner at a classic family style America restaurant. read more

I've been going here for I want to say 3 years, I have always driven past it growing up, but never sat down and ate. Every time I go here, luckily the wait has never been extremely long and whoever is serving us has always been kind and attentive. I believe one time, they missed a refill?! But it was crazy in there! The food is delicious, I like how they post their specials. We had a Parmesan crusted sandwich one time and I can't wait for whenever they bring that sandwich back. Oof. That was a rough one. We came here because we found out they give free meals on your birthday. PSA: Sign up for this before your actual birthday! They said it takes awhile to process. The manager and our server were kind enough to let us have one free meal though! The service was great, hence the extra star. The food though... we got eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, and the bear claw. The hashbrowns were decently crunchy and nicely salted, but the eggs were flavorless, the sausage were ok, and the bear claw seemed like it was heated up in a microwave. We had a somewhat bad experience here after going to this location several times. The food and atmosphere is good and we enjoyed it, but the service was lacking. I asked for a water and my partner a soda, and the server only brought the soda. We saw our server standing by the kitchen chit-chatting. We had to ask another server walking by for my water to finally get it. Then a bear mascot came in and started bothering the customers. He almost knocked over a server's food by his antics. He then sat down next to a single lady in her booth. He had been outside slinking around the windows in the bushes waving at the customers inside. It was raining outside. I don't see how coming in from the mud, rain, and whatever was on the bushes to inside can be sanitary. I got so uncomfortable with it that I don't want to go back because of him. read more

I just placed a to-go order at this place, and the hostess could not ring in my order correctly. She then told me she would bring my order to me. Then I sat for 45 minutes on the bench right in front of the cash register. When I went to check on my food, it was just sitting there getting cold, and the same hostess literally asked me who I had placed my order with and then tried to ring me in again, charging me twice. Also, the order was missing an Item, and she insisted the order was complete and correct without looking in the bag. I went to the manager, who had the cook provide the missing item and gave me a coupon for 5 dollars, which is what I had tipped on a 21 dollar tab. There were like 14 customers total in the building when this was going on. I go to this place twice a month. I have never had an issue except once, a few weeks ago, when the toast I ordered was missing from the breakfast they made for my to go order. I am not sure what is going on here, but the behavior of the hostess astounded me, unable to recall the guy she literally rang in 4 customers back. A lot can happen in a with restaurant employees. This girl was completely oblivious, like on another planet. Draw your own conclusions. Critical areas of failure: Order Verification: If tickets are not rang in correctly, how do you keep track of who ordered what? Or track inventory, or prevent employees from stealing, or balance the books? Customer Service: A hostess with no short-term recall who responds to customer concerns with less effort than she puts into rolling silverware is a time bomb. This is a great spot to come for a big breakfast. Their portions are huge and perfect for splitting. I've had breakfast here a number of times and never been disappointed. Definitely a place you want to visit for breakfast lunch or dinner! I love the creativity blackbear stuff everywhere. There's something fun in whimsical and yet comforting. They were slammed when my partner and I went there and yet food steaming hot didn't take too long. Service was genuine. I feel a lot of times you get fake service people, but this place everybody there truly cares what they're doing from the hostess to the bus boy to our server who was amazing. As I looked around, I saw every single person was giving the exact same service even though servers were different.. The menu is not just breakfast. They have a good variety of food and the white board as you enter has seasonal options specials. I wouldn't have expected that from a typical diner. I don't usually write reviews so this means something that I'm doing one. First off the food was decent. No really complaints there. I was with my twin girls and my father in law. Second...the service was terrible. We had to ask our server twice for just water. Which sucks but fine, it's kind of busy, I get it. My FIL and I got our food first, then soon after one of my daughters gets hers. This is where it falls short. 5 min go by and still nothing for my other daughter. Our waiter is no where in sight. I can see a lot of workers standing behind the counter just hanging out I guess? Finally our waiter shows up and says he is on the kitchen to get my daughters breakfast out and apologizes. He had a bowl of fruit in his hand which I thought he was going to offer but nope. I kept having to tell my daughter don't worry it's coming while she is tearing up trying to hold them back. It took a lot in me not to cause a scene and probably end up in a viral video on the internet. 10-15 min later she finally got her food. After we were done we asked for a box and got the check. Nothing was comped, I was expecting her meal to be taken off...it was only $5 and would've went a long way for me. So, now it's time to pay. I send my daughters and FIL outside while I went to the casheir. I had to listen to gossip from the cashier and other co worker how her bf wanted her to go watch a scary movie all while I paid. I guess I just expect a little more professionalism? When the tip menu came up I gladly pressed "No Tip". This place is always busy because of its central location. I came here for my birthday meal and it was ok. Seems like this place has big portions but the food isn't as good as it used to be. Server was not friendly until it came time to pay the bill. She seemed annoyed or overwhelmed. Probably wont be back until my next birthday meal! Just had a wonderful Brunch with family. Not only was the food great but our waiter Manny went above and beyond by bringing extra refills for all our drinks without asking for them! Quick with a smile his enthusiasm was contagious. Food was fantastic. I had the Breakfast Melt: eggs my way, with crusty Bacon, ham and melted cheddar cheese sandwiched between 2 delicious buttery sourdough breads. A very fluffy Denver Omelette, crispy Chicken tenders and a huge Club Sandwich rounded out our meal. On the way home from the orthodontist my daughter asked for diner breakfast food. We didn't have a lot of time, and we had to drive right past Black Bear Diner on Tualatin Valley Highway. We had been here before for a team lunch. This isn't a place where you go for excellent meal, it's more of an experience. My daughter just likes the bears. We were seated, and as I was opening the 20 tiny half and half containers to get enough cream into my coffee, the waiter came to tell us that their kitchen had been down, nothing was working, no griddle, no fryer etc... nothing except their waffle machine. They expected it could take up to 30-50 min to be up and running and get food to us. I wished they had said something before seating us, but it was a young person delivering the message who looked pretty overwhelmed by the situation. I said that it wasn't a problem, and we were happy to eat waffles. Had we not been seated in a booth quite literally next to the kitchen, I never would have seen the drama that would play out. It was like watching reality TV at its worst. The staff was working hard trying to problem solve, trying to turn off online orders, turn off the phone, calling in additional help etc... and there was this ONE woman. She clearly was some sort of a boss, maybe the owner? She was older person wearing a royal blue pig-n-pancake t-shirt. She was absolutely horrible to her staff. I watched her berate a young woman who was busting her ass just trying to help. She was so busy being awful to her employees that she actually got in the way of them doing their jobs. I had waited for a 2nd cup of coffee...again, no harm, no foul, they were busy. So instead of waiting on our over worked waiter, I just took my cup to the counter. I mean, I was sitting directly across from the kitchen. The pig-n-pancake woman sees this, proceeds to yell at the staff that they aren't even serving the customers they currently have, and she escalated again. It was so unnecessary. Did she pick up the coffee pot that she was literally standing right next to? No, she yelled at someone else to come and do it. There I stood waiting with my cup until someone came back. Again, she was right at the pot. We sat there watching what looked like a circus of her making. She could have managed this situation with some kindness and respect for her staff, but instead, she became a sitcom like character of a shrew. I saw a bunch of you people working extremely hard, and doing a fine job. But the boss was flitting around creating absolute chaos, drama, and offering no help whatsoever!!! This staff did not deserve the treatment that they received from pig-n-pancake woman. I was appalled by her lack of self control, professionalism, and leadership skills. She was so busy yelling and pacing in a frenzy, she was a distraction. We will never return to Black Bear Diner. I didn't care about the kitchen, I didn't care that the waffles took longer. However, I do care about how people are treated by those in power over them. If this is how Black Bear treats their employees, they certainly don't need my money. Now, if you want a fun old school diner experience, try Blue Moon Diner also on TV Hwy. Great staff, really good food, and it's priced about the same. To the pig-n-pancake woman; most people are decent and understanding. It didn't have to play out like this. Your kitchen was back up and running before we even left. A leader would have been a calming influence on staff, providing direction, not creating a spectacle. You didn't have a full house, you easily could have gone to each table, calmly explained, maybe even offered to comp a cup of coffee. You could have stood at the door yourself telling people that there was going to be a wait due to a kitchen malfunction. Instead I watched you yelling at a young person telling her to call someone back in. She was trying to tell you that she had done just that, but you were so worked up, talking over her that you never heard her. When we left, I told our waiter that there are other places to work that don't treat people like this. Your histrionics were unbearable to watch. Did you ever think that customers were watching YOU? Shame on you for treating people like this. As we left, I told my daughter that this was a lesson in how not to treat people. read more

It was Valentine's Day, February 14, 2025. I decided to treat myself to some pork ribs, some carrot cake. I ordered through DoorDash when I got my ribs I looked in the container and they were covered in barbecue sauce. That's what cooks do to hide the meat that's old or fatty. It was disgusting and I will never order from them again. The carrot cake was dry but OK. The mashed potatoes were also covered in barbecue sauce. What a big mistake and waste of money. read more

My boyfriend and I love Black Bear Diner! We always have a good experience and our breakfast here was no exception. We came around 9:45 on a Sunday morning and it was packed. The host let us know it would be a 20-25 minute wait, which we were fine with, but they got us a table in less than 10 minutes! Our server was Izhan and he did a great job. I ordered a side of "creamy grits" - just, no. Not creamy, lumpy, instant-grits taste with no creaminess (my bad, I thought creamy meant like made with milky- type substance). Our waitress was super friendly; however, and came back multiple times - despite a giant table of 10 that was seated next to us. That's why the 3-star rating and not 2. Normally, I am the biggest fan of flat fair diner. Every time I go to Sedona I always eat here. I am visiting my family in Oregon and they have a great size servings. Unfortunately, my dad's food was freezing cold when he got it, but they remade it right away. I do love the newspapers in the diner in general for the menu. Finally visited the Black Bear Diner in Beaverton after considering it many times. Overall it was okay. Some excellent highlights, but some low points as well. The server was excellent. She assisted us to ensure we ordered the exact items we wanted. I heard her doing the same at table nearby. The portions are basically huge as mentioned in previous reviews. But I would prefer to have quality versus quantity. My daughter ordered the smaller chicken fried steak, hash browns, eggs, and subbed the stuffed blackberry French toast for the biscuit. I ordered the Big Foot chicken fried steak as well as the hash browns, eggs and a biscuit. (actually 2 gigantic biscuits). The highlights: 1) The chicken fried steak was perfect. It was hot, crisp and the gravy was also very good. 2) The hash browns were perfectly cooked to the requested crisp style. (I only wish the serving would have been larger) 3) The over easy eggs were also cooked a perfectly over easy. 4) As mentioned earlier, the service was superb. The low points: 1) The food was served on cold plates, and it was very cold outside, and not warm inside. Even the table next to us stated to the server that their French fries were cold. 2) The eggs, while being perfectly cooked, became quite cold, very quickly. 3) The biscuits were flavorless, and cold. 4) And I don't understand restaurants serving cold maple syrup. The syrup for the French toast was cold, so very little was used. While the experience was okay, we will continue to visit other nearby standouts that are 5 stars. read more
