Harvest Ham Melt + Classic Tex-Mex Wrap
    Kaitlin W.

Popped into Bittersweet Cafe after our original lunch plans in Holly fell through. My husband and I wanted to spend the day browsing antique shops after a quick meal at Blackthorn Pub, but they didn't open until 3 or 4pm. We noticed this little spot across the street and were able to walk in and immediately snag a table. As much as we've loved our past experiences at the pub, we were so happy to have ended up at Bittersweet. It was our first time there and definitely won't be our last!! We both ordered unique cocktails, a couple of sandwiches, and our waitress talked us into dessert. Everything was amazing! I ordered the Harvest Ham Melt -- Freshly sliced ham, apple slices, cheddar, and honey dijon on cinnamon swirl bread... all warm & toasty with coleslaw + potato chips on the side. My husband ordered the Classic Tex-Mex Wrap -- Grilled Cajun chicken, colby jack cheese, black olives, tomato, and mixed greens. He said it was one of the best lunches he's ever had! The decadent Snickers Cheesecake at the end of our meal was UNBELIEVABLE! Honestly too good to be true, and I highly recommend leaving room for it if you plan a visit here! Restaurant interior is quaint, cozy, full of history, and has a very comfortable & inviting atmosphere. Staff is happy, busy, and skilled at what they all do! There are plenty of choices on the menu for breakfast, brunch, and lunch, plus dinner on Fridays & Saturdays. Come on down to Holly and spend the day searching for antique treasures, and make sure to grab some grub at Bittersweet Cafe (now officially on my list of local favorites!)

They get 3 stars because the food was good. The service was terrible, and I don't say that lightly. We waited 10-15 minutes for coffee (the waitress forgot we ordered it so we had to order it a second time) - when we wanted a refill on coffee (which again, we waited for - I had to flag the waitress down) there was no coffee made. That's probably because our waitress talked to another table for about 10 minutes. We were there at the end of the breakfast crowd and before the lunch rush so there weren't many people inside. Still, for some reason, it took about 45 minutes to get our food.... I'm pretty sure our waitress forgot to put our order in. When I inquired about the long wait she said they had a lot of online orders - but people who came in after us were being served way before us. She was not apologetic at all. Also, my mom uses a walker - this place is not handicap friendly. I will definitely not return.

Rating only as a breakfast spot I was a bit disappointed/surprised by this restaurant. On a positive side my Western omelet was well cooked and tasty and staff was very pleasant. on the less positive side, things that you take for granted at most other breakfast spots were add on charges at this business. Case in point my omelet was a two egg omelet versus the normal three eggs where there was an up charge on adding more eggs and Hash browns were not included in the price either but were also a added cost to include with my meal. Looking for your typical 2 egg breakfast with hash browns and meat this will cost you over $14 here due to separate charges for each side. Definately not competitive with the restaurants I normally frequent. Overall, if you are looking for a breakfast in the downtown Holly area there are not a lot of places to choose from and this is a decent option. However be prepared to pay a little extra here due to the added upcharges.

This is a cute little place that has been around since the 40s. They have a picture on the wall showing that! The staff was ridiculously nice and accommodating. The locals were even so nice. Everyone made you feel at home. The food is simple but delicious and filling. They do only have one restroom that is coed so the line was a few people deep by the end of the lunch hour. Parking is free on the street. Definitely needs a good cleaning with all of the lace and curtains on the top of the walls, they were very dirty. They have some really good cocktails. Although I do not recommend the chocolate martini. They put half and half in it instead of a cream liqueur. I felt like a cat drinking cream out of a saucer. But overall a wonderful place. If we're in the area, I'm happy to know that I'll have at least one place to visit where I know the food is good. Also, I don't recommend this area. There's nothing to do in the middle of Michigan

Really enjoyed my time. Wonderful breakfast. Service very friendly. Quaint atmosphere but hard chairs. Worth the visit.

I really appreciate this quaint little restaurant. Very friendly staff and patrons as well. Everyone must really enjoy the place. I was surprised to see so many people waiting infont for them to open at 8:30 AM. I enjoyed the French toast and sausage for breakfast, but I can't wait to go in for lunch and get a burger and a cocktail.

Pleasant breakfast cafe. Good food and friendly service. Cozy. My hash browns were underwhelming (not very flavorful and only warm) but everything else we had was tasty.

Awesome spinach dip. It was so creamy! We came in 40 min before closing time and had plenty of time to eat before close. Our server was great, our meals were great, great experience

The beer selection is great, but the food is what keeps us coming back! This is not your average pub grub, as they continuously come up with unique twists on classic brewery fare. We have never been disappointed by their weekly soup offerings, and one of my favorite sandwiches is the gourmet grilled cheese with smoked pulled turkey... (don't forget to add some tater tots!) I also like to try their ever-changing menu of flavored house-made seltzers; and the hard cider selection is one-of-a-kind. Waitstaff is cool, patient, down to earth, and love to recommend their top picks on both the drink & food menus, in case you're having trouble deciding. I tried a few of their beverages and while tasty (I especially love their dry cider) some of them appear to have carbonation issues and were a bit flat. I added the French onion soup for $11 and it was the perfect lunch. The soup was excellent, except there was way too much cheese! Half the bowl was cheese. You may be wondering why we chose a restaurant about 60 miles away for our review this…read more month. The answer is simple, because its darn good. Mrs. She-Ate and I are excited to share our esteem for this place with you. I first became aware of The Laundry around 2014 when I was leading a series of professional development workshops with the Flint Community Schools. A good friend and colleague who lived in the area suggested we have dinner not too far south of Flint and my taste buds have been blown ever since. The quaint bedroom community of Fenton has been benefitting from not just good food and libations, but also the cultural hub that The Laundry has become. Having first opened over 25 years ago on a site that was a former laundromat, the restaurant is embedded as an anchor in the downtown development and as a stalwart in supporting community initiatives- public schools and art, libraries, charities, and the chamber of commerce. They are as proud of that work as they are the James Beard nominated chefs who grace their kitchen. When you visit the bistro, with its locally sourced ingredients and on-site vegetable garden and beehive, you immediately know you're in a place that takes their food seriously. Craft cocktails and scratch-made meals are a hallmark, and while you may have prolonged anticipation while somethings arrive at your table, they are often well worth the wait. My very first meal years ago at The Laundry was a pork shank Osso buco that is still one of the best plates in my life. They also offer a cheese spread know as Gorg Dip that continues to be a hit whenever I recreate it during the holidays- cream cheese, leek, bacon, apricot, gorgonzola. Trust me, these people know what they're doing with flavors. Oh, wait, I forgot to mention they also double the fun with a bakery as their sister company, Crust, and a coffee house, Side Door, which is quite literally the Side Door to the restaurant. The baked goods are phenomenal, and rumor has it that leftover pastries are captured for the next day's bread pudding- which again is some of the best I've ever had. What's Really Good My Much Better Half stole away for a midday excursion to Fenton and enjoyed a "late brunch" at the Laundry. The coffee is a prime example of an exercise in patience- super slow in the advent but spot on once we were able to sip the hot, frothy Nutty Professor ($6.25. This is an espresso-based drink with house made caramel and macadamia syrup. For a sweet starter, we shared Jeff's Pull Apart Bread ($5) which is a single loaf shaped monkey bread. Packed with sweet notes of caramel and cinnamon and then smothered with a house made cream cheese frosting. Near perfect. What's Superb I must make note of the friendly and knowledgeable service we received. We were made aware of potential delays in plates and drinks but were also never an afterthought as our server checked on us multiple times with a genuine joy you only find when people really like where they work. We were both highly impressed and that was before she told us about her FIFTY-SIX hours in labor last July as she and My Much Better Half traded birthing stories. On the food side, I was torn between two items and our server asked how hungry I was. She then encouraged me to order the #125 The Money Maker ($17) and I was very much enchanted. A grilled brioche bun holds a heaping mound of hot honey butter braised chicken that is topped with applewood smoked bacon and a house made pimento cheese spread. The meat was tender and the kick from the heat was remarkable but not overblown. The pimento cheese spread is so good it also belongs in a jar to be purchase on the way out. I also ordered the Roasted Potatoes($3.50) which were just okay, to be honest, but there was enough flavor in the sammie that it didn't matter much. Best Bite My dining mate is a lifelong pursuit of the perfect French Onion soup. She ordered the House made Soup and Sandwich ($25) and I think she got as close as possible. Not to be relegated to second billing was the Petite Croque Monsieur with layers of ham, Gruyère cheese, and a traditional croque sauce. Yet, the star of the show was the unctuous soup with broiled Gruyère and croutons and slivers of onion that have been carmelized and stewed in a succulent beef broth for longer than you or I would have patience for.

We originally stopped a couple weeks after having dinner in town to see what it was all about, then returned to enjoy it fully. This is a great place for everyone, all ages are welcome. This also seems like a place for parties, there were multiple birthdays and even a baby shower happening on a Saturday night. If you are a family, there is something for all age children. They have tiny play structures, a fake lawn, cornhole, giant Jinga, and two arcades, one in a basement, and one upstairs, to enjoy, plus pool and foosball. They features several restaurants. Outside they have food truck trailers, Mexican, burgers, chicken, and salad and bowls. They also have a small bar area outside with cans. Inside they have Crispelli's and a full bar. They also have a full row of self-service beer and wine taps with a table of cups plus a self-serve pop machine with Pepsi products. The people working here seem nice and helpful, and very honest. We of course played games. I like air hockey and skee ball. We tried the smash burgers, they were good, they came with chips. We also got garlic parm waffle fries with aioli, BBQ rip lollipops, a few cups of pops, and a Tinga chicken burrito. The Crispelli's pizza looked really good. We did not get any, but it is one of our favorite places, so perhaps we will in the future. The salad bowls also look really yummy. There are great places to sit inside and outside. They have TV's playing inside and out with whatever game is on. We sat outside, there are a lot of picnic tables with big umbrellas. But, since it was Saturday night, it was getting packed so come early. They also have a fire pit and a fire place. This place was quite the local hang. Even all of the homecoming high schoolers seemed to stop here before their dance. The best feature is the self-serve beer. You get a bracelet and then use it to get your drinks, then turn it in at the end of your stay to cash out. Here is where I had an issue. I kept track of what we drank. But when I checked out, luckily I asked for the receipt to be printed. I was charged over $8 extra dollars for wine. I am not sure how that happened. I only had beer, and the wine tap was nowhere near any of the taps I used. The manager was very kind and removed the charge. This is why I put in the review, they were honest and helpful. Thank you for helping! They had a great variety of drinks on tap. You pay by the ounce and it gives you the price per ounce. I tried a pumpkin beer, espresso beer, M-43, lemonade hard cider, cherry beer, and Zombie Killer cider. This sounds like a lot, but I only had a couple ounces or less of each, so it only cost about $12. They did also have wine, but I did not try that this time. The full bar has cocktails, but I did not get a chance to look at the menu this time. This is a great use of space and the entire family had the best time. I hope this place is a mainstay and I really look forward to visiting again real soon.
