Case of the "not so happy" hour. 4 star food with 3 star prices. Tight lipped server. What do I mean? In search of happy hour, I saw Bis on Main about 5:30 p.m. in the evening. The menu, prominently displayed on the table for happy hour looked good (no times for happy hour posted on it so I assumed the standard 4-6PM every place in Bellevue does) so with the server taking my order I said "hmmm, the happy hour menu looks good at the right price, I think I will order from there." Made my order for kobe sliders, Ceasar salad, Manila clams, plus crabcakes - all with no comment from the server on whether or not it is happy hour. After enjoying my meal, my hair stood up on its end looking at the bill - happy hour is 9 PM and after only. Crapola, I had to pay full price. Please guys, read the fine print in the menu or ask the server first before ordering (server didn't bother to tell me it wasn't happy hour time). I ended up paying $20 more for my meal (33% more than I had anticipated). My happy hour wasn't so happy after all. read more

The 3 of us & our dog sat outside & had amazing food & service & felt Covid safe Leslie served us & we shared the tomato mozzarella appetizer which was fresh & delicious, then we had crab cakes which were so filled with crab & we finished with the crispy chicken with basmati rice & asparagus- the chicken was so tasty & moist! Special occasion dinner out and haven't been to Bis since 2021. Good marks for the food: green salads were creative with unique and delicious dressings, and leg of lamb (new to the menu) was a hit with my husband. My filet was done perfectly, though I've never been served a $70 filet cut in two pieces. So odd. Ordered a $$$ bottle of French wine and were a bit surprised that in an upscale restaurant and for a bottle of that caliber, that they didn't offer to decanter the wine (not too mention the waiter broke the cork table-side while uncorking :/). I do like the new updated decor of the restaurant, but if you can at all avoid it, do NOT let them seat you in one of the 2-tops along the wall just past the hostess stand. Staff whizzing by constantly- just not a good experience AT ALL. You are basically sitting in the walkway. In my opinion, they just shouldn't have tables there. So overall, good marks for food quality and taste, but lost points on wine service and table/location/lack of ambiance. read more

The souffle was over cooked and the ice cream was too big for the souffle itself. Also the flavor was average. The tarte tan was disappointing too. Glad they could accommodate a 2 top. Quickly seated. Waiter was fine. My guests food arrived 10 or more minutes before mine. We starter to share. Yummy. Finally got attention from the staff. Soon after my dish arrived but was undercooked. Asked the waiter to change the order to what what she had graciously been sharing with me. It was delicious but a tad undercooked. Will be better after reheated for tomorrow's lunch. If I was the manager of this place I would have comped the customer in someway. Removed 1 or both glasses of wine or something. read more

Food here is excellent. Every dish I have tried has it's own identity. The other night I ordered their: Crispy Garlic Chicken that came with garlic mashed potatoes and french beans. The portion was big and everything was seasoned perfectly. I wasn't able to finish all the chicken so I had it boxed up and I ate it for lunch the next day. Let me tell you the chicken was still super moist the next day after I had heated it up! Yummm. and also the Rigatoni Bolognese. Yum yum yum! Probably the best bolognese i've had in a while. Bis has been our favorite place for years. Tonight...mediocre. The medium rare steaks were overcooked. The artwork that formerly adorned all the walls - no longer there, but all the empty picture hooks remained on the bare walls . Walls that needed a coat of new paint. The toilet seat was broken in the women's restroom. I actually almost slid off....that's a first. And I only weigh 105#. And the bathroom counter was dirty. Great local place in Downtown Bellevue. Enjoyed a drink at the bar with my buddy before his wife joined us where we moved to the dining room and enjoyed a great meal. Bartender was great along with the staff in the dining room. Just enough attention without being suffocated and yet there when needed. Perfect! We had the Lamb Chop, Filet and Scallops. All well prepared and good size portions. Finished it off with their Chocolate Ice Cream. Look forward to another trip up here so I can go back and try something new. I have to say that the food here is really good. However, the service is what I'm leaving the review about. I took my friend there to treat her to a nice birthday dinner. My friend is black, and I am white. Neither my friend nor I had been to Bis on Main before. We had a reservation, and in it I left a comment that it was a birthday dinner. None of the wait staff mentioned happy birthday or asked whose birthday it was, but that's the least of the issues. We had 2 waiters that night, one was training the other who was a new hire. Waiter 1 came, greeted, and began to explain the specials of the evening. I noticed that he only made eye contact with me, only spoke to me, didn't acknowledge my friend. I noted it as odd and started to pay close attention. Waiter 2 came shortly after, made eye contact with me and asked me how I was doing, and managed to glance at my friend. Then a little later Waiter 1 came back to check on us and ask if we were ready to order, again he only made eye contact with me, and when it came time to take my friend's order, he didn't even look at her - he looked down at his note pad and asked what she wanted. At this point I fully realized what was happening. I asked my friend if she wanted to leave, but she said to stay. Our salad was delivered to our table, and again - only making eye contact with me and only speaking to me - I was asked if either of us would like pepper on the salad. So I made the point to ask her if she would like some pepper. I was trying to give the hint that the staff needed to be treating her better. They didn't take the hint. Throughout the whole evening they NEVER asked her a single question, and I kept asking her the questions first before giving my answer, because if I answered first, they would just walk away without getting hers. Towards the end of the evening it got to the point where, when I would get asked a question, I would gesture with my hands towards my friend to force the waiter to ask HER the question, THEN I would give my answer after she gave hers. They still never looked at her or acknowledged her without me forcing it. When we were finished, I paid, tipped for the quality of the food, and then went up front to talk to the manager. I calmly explained what had happened, and he reacted in shock. He was very apologetic and said that the owner would be in the next morning, and that he would talk to the owner then. He also assured me that there would be a conversation with the wait staff that served us that evening. He took my name and email address as well. I told him we weren't looking to get anything from him, but rather just wanted them to be better. Well it's been a week since and I haven't received any correspondence from the restaurant. No confirmation that there even was a conversation, no official apology or reassurance from the manager or the owner - nothing. Complete radio silence. Which is why I'm leaving this review, because it's 2021 and NO ONE should EVER be made to feel unwelcome because of the color of their skin. This story deserves to be heard, especially since the restaurant has chosen to ignore it. read more

Came for a birthday dinner with the family and the service could not have been better. Everyone was very pleasant and attentive, even to my kid. It's a local restaurant, which is great, but without good food and service, they would not survive. Bis on Main has both. The menu is pretty big and you have your choice of pasta, meat or fish dishes. Would highly recommend trying this place. Did not know about the free valet parking in the back parking lot but will have to try that next time. read more

Takeout salad nicoise was perfect for a summer picnic to celebrate a friend's birthday. The staff was masked, and food prepped right on time for my pick up. The tuna was perfectly seared, and large enough to have a significant raw portion. The amount was generous. The egg yolks were perfectly soft, not chalky at all. One of the best nicoise salads I've had. My only request would be for anchovies. I think they subbed in capers, as they are probably agreeable to more people. My first time to this restaurant and was very impressed. I was with 6 co-workers and found the vibe to be very nice, both inside the restaurant and the outdoor seating area. We had multiple appetizers, including a seared ahi that was delicious. The salads were great as well. I ordered the rib eye special, along with 2 of my co-workers. Was sad to hear they only had 1 left and even sadder when I lost the rock-paper-scissor for the last one. I went with plan 'b' which was a NY steak cooked perfectly medium-rare. . By far the thickest NY steak of my meat eating career, and arguably the best. It was so good I've thought about it multiple times since visiting this wonderful restaurant. I'm often apprehensive to order a steak that is not in a steakhouse - not this time. I highly recommend this restaurant. By the way, the fried Brussels sprouts were amazing too. These guys are thieves I went in with my wife to celebrate her birthday. I was charged $183.70 which I was totally fine with we even got a text from the bank for the $183.70. Few days later, we got another text from the bank for a charge of $203.70. They added $20.00 that we didn't approve, I called them and left a voice mail no one had returned my call. With a place that pricy, I expected for them to save your item if you forget it; that didn't happen in my case. I left two bluetooth ear bugs and called them about it no one has call me back. I have been to Bis on Main several times for dinner and never had any issues - in fact, it's great with vegan options, which is why I always go there with two of my friends from work. Unfortunately, what happened last night will ensure I never go back and I will make it clear on several other social media outlets what happened so that others do not have to experience what I did. After waiting almost 10-15 minutes to be seated by the owner/host (no other waiters could help me and he was downstairs on the phone), the owner finally returned with barely a thank you or acknowledgement for how long I had waited. He asked for my name and when I told him my last name was Martin, he snickered to himself and repeated my name out loud, as if he was questioning it. I am Chinese-American and am married to a Caucasian male with the last name Martin. This is not only common but should not be a surprise to someone who works in the hospitality industry. After asking him if there was some confusion (and giving him a chance to apologize or SOMETHING) he proceeded to continuing repeating my name and said something to the affect of "Ok, if that's what you say it is" and started directing me to my table. It took everything in my being not to commit a RHONJ offense and flip a table in the restaurant. And had it not been for the fact that my friend is vegan, we would have left. We stayed for the rest of the meal and it took almost an hour to receive our food. Needless to say, I am appalled that this type of behavior occurred in Bellevue by an owner of a nice restaurant. This is not something anyone should have to experience and I thought of so many witty things I should have said to him after the fact. Let me start by saying the food, presentation and wait service has been good to excellent on our 1st and 2nd visits over the last two weeks. But we definitely need to address a totally unacceptable response to an issue we ran into last night. Just after our 1st visit on 12/30/22 we called to inquire about their Corkage Fee which was stated as $35. We then booked another res for 1/7/23 for us and another couple and bringing a nice 08 Cab to share with our guests. So the bill arrives with the ridiculous Corkage of $45 shown. I nicely asked our waiter to reduce the charge to $35 and advised my wife had specifically called in to check it just 2 weeks before AND at $45 we would have not brought our own wine as $35 was bad enough. So here comes in tandem the Ops Director Ms. Martin and Chef/Owner Mr. Moore to say bluntly its $45 and that's it. They couldn't have cared less my wife had called in and Mr. Moore blurted out ~"here's the deal, we make no money on people bringing their own wine". They stood glaring at us in a demeaning way like how dare you to have questioned our policies? We paid our bill and left. So here are my closing comments on BIS On Main. We have spent over $640 on our two visits in recent weeks. You could have easily said "okay, we will adjust this time but please be aware of the increase in the future" and all would have been fine. Bis is always a pleasure. I've had the occasional snoot of a waiter but the service is always great and I can't complain. When I've interacted with the owner (Joe) I've always been impressed. Food choices don't change too much but why should they when the selection has the right mix and they always deliver a top notch plate. I will admit I was a little nervous after reading some of the bad reviews on here but my friend and I went last night and had an excellent experience. The service was wonderful - our waiter was the perfect balance between being attentive to our needs and not interrupting our conversation. When my friend was choosing a wine he brought her some tastes which was really nice! The food was great. We split the steak skewers to start which were delicious. We each has a house salad and then I had the cod and my friend had the duck. Delicious! We ended by splitting the bread pudding. I was stuffed and happy. :) Some people had complained on here about cramped quarters - I'm very pregnant and I was worried but I found it totally spacious and easy to move around. I liked how the restaurant has separate rooms so you never feel you're in a huge packed place. Overall a really nice dining experience and I look to returning with my husband! read more

I was at Bis On Main for a business meeting on a Friday evening. I was seated at a table in the bar. It was early (5:30) and staff was gathered and chatting amongst each other behind the bar. Despite the chilly temps, there was a man walking up Old Main with a Trump flag. They staff chuckled to each other in derogatory, foul language about the "lunatic old man." Certainly talking loud enough for me, a patron, to overhear. So unprofessional. They did not care who heard them talking..... Soon thereafter, my associate arrived and we began our business meeting. When our server approached us, I was mid-sentence. I glanced down at the specialty cocktail menu, a tent card on the table. I quickly ordered a Silk Teddy... some creative concoction with a pretty name. My associate ordered a riff on a Moscow Mule. When our server returned a bit later with the cocktails, he placed mine in front of me. As he did so, he commented to me "I bet you'd look great wearing a Silk Teddy." My associate + I were so jarred by his highly inappropriate comment that our conversation stopped for a moment. Is this 1955? Hahaha no.... it is not. We continued our meeting but I was insulted. We should have left right then. On Sunday I spoke with Joe Vilardi, the owner of Bis On Main about my unfortunate experience on Friday. During our phone conversation, Joe called me "lady" and said "is this a shakedown?" and "what do you want??" Nothing.... I was asking for absolutely nothing. As a business owner, I thought Joe V would want to know about his employee's lewd + harassing behavior to me. All I wanted was an acknowledgment and an apology, or even a just kind response of "I'm sorry you felt that way in my establishment." Joe V refused to say any such thing. In fact, Joe V became defensive, responded to me with vitriol, and he then hung up on me. Trickle down leadership.... it's a real thing, people! It quickly became clear to me why the Bis On Main bar employees spoke how they did, and why the server spoke so inappropriately to me. The owner / leader is fine with it. He did not care. Oh..... btw the food at Bis On Main?? The crab cakes + the scallops both had a strong fishy odor upon delivery to our table-- always a bad sign. The polenta is unattractively served.... a flavorless pile of tasteless, mushy grits. Bis On Main is struggling. BIG time. Their menu is tired, old and boooooring. SKIP BIS ON MAIN!
