Discovered a new ( been here for years) restaurant. At the time we arrived the majority of the orders were going out as pick up. We decided to follow the pattern since our puppy was waiting at the house for us to return. The flavors were authentic based on our experience of India food from restaurants and friends that have prepared sampling of meals for our enjoyment. My sponsor had Shrimp Biriyani, and requested a mild spice and heat level - the response from the chef was a sweet smile and " I will try". I ordered the Butter chicken. We shared garlic naan bread. Stop the press! I've been on the hunt for home cooked Indian food that doesn't cost and arm and a leg and as an Indian myself I keep myself why is every Indian restaurant so expensive? It doesn't cost a lot to make this food, I make it myself all the time. I found a hole in the wall restaurant via google and its reviews called Biriyani House. I saw the menu prices on google and just had to see it for myself. They're the same. $1.69 for a samosa the size of your hand (that's how they make it in India, btw!), $6.99 for a huge to go chicken biriyani and $13 for a veggie curry. They gave me a free samosa while I waited for my order to be cooked and they had it done fairly quickly. I couldn't wait to go home and try it and let me tell you, it's the best authentic Indian food I've ever had! Not too spicy and so flavorful like how my mom makes it. I took some pics to refer to how much they gave me, I've already had over 5 servings and I still have about 2-3 servings left over! This is the place y'all. It's also a super sweet older couple who cooks the food by themselves, no hires so the flavor is coming straight from a cultural tradition. This place is a complete waste of money. Their curry is nothing but water and grease without any salt. It's disgusting. They hung up on me when I placed a to go order. I arrive and they ask if I want a menu, I tell them no, I called in. They asked if I had a name for the order and I said I was trying to leave my name and they hung up on me. Their son works for them and when I told him I was hung up on his response was " that sounds like something my parents would do" like seriously?? So unprofessional. They said they would remake my food the next day, I went there. What a amazing lunch. A family owned husband-wife duo business! We called ahead to see what kind of fish they had available. we ordered some shrimp and a big bowl of freshly cooked shrimp was ready for us when we got there. very good buffet every Friday from 11:30pm to 5:30pm for $8. This place lies next to UTA and adjacent to the apartments occupied by the Bangladeshi students. Since the owner is Bangladeshi, it was supposed to be a very popular place with the students. But almost all the students had nightmares here. Unbelievable how worse the food here is. I had promised to myself not to be there again. But circumstances made me go there and i was dreaming that everything might have changed in the last couple of years. Unfortunately everything got even worse. Biriani was stale and undoubtedly cooked 2/3 days ago. It was not tasty either. The food they serve is simply not south asian food. Hands down, worst south asian restaurant in DFW. Be aware of some other things: they charge you much more frequently, make sure that you know the price before you eat. Another thing, if you have a look at their kitchen, you might become senseless right away. The best thing about biriyani house is the price. Where else in the metroplex can you get a large portion of chicken biriyani for $3.99? The worst thing is the service. We walked into the restaurant and although the open sign was lit, all of the lights were off and nobody was in the dining area. We were a little surprised since it wasn't exactly an "early" time for dinner service (around 7:00-7:30). We decided to take a seat and make a little noise pulling out our chairs in the hope that someone would hear us. Unfortunately, that did not happen, but we only waited about 10 minutes before someone noisier than us came in and our waiter immediately came to get our order. I ask for the lamb biriyani and my husband gets the chicken tikka kebab. Now we are settled in and waiting for our food while watching the most poorly subtitled Indian war-flick of all time. We while away the time while trying to fathom the plot. Our food arrives shortly and is delicious. The portion size of the biryani is generous and with good flavor. The portion size of the chicken tikka is less generous... it was a little small for my lumber-jack sized husband. The waiter came to check on us once, early in the meal. Afterwards he answers a call on his cell phone and walks out the front door and never came back.... no, seriously he NEVER CAME BACK. We are sitting at the table and clearly finished with our dinner in an apparently empty restaurant. Eventually an old man comes out and smiles at us. At this point we are unclear if this man can work the register or if he is just a cook. We decided to wait for our waiter (funny, that). Eventually someone came in for a to-go order and he checked them out which indicates to us he is a register worker. We walk up and finally get to leave. I told this story to the friend that recommended the place and he said it is just how things are done. He says he usually walks back into the kitchen and announces that he's done. As we were heading to my grandma's apartment, my dad saw this place right past UT Arlington. I'm sure that as soon as he saw it he had his mind set on trying it. I walked in to get a menu and see if it was worth eating there. The prices looked pretty fair, in fact, there was a chicken biryani special for $3.99, bingo. You got us! The service is as expected at an asian owned restaurant, slightly lackluster, but that that isn't exactly why you go to places like these. Order up, and in a few minutes it was on our table. For $3.99 the amount of biryani we got was slightly ridiculous. For one person its definitely too much, and for two people if you order another dish its still too much. It isn't lacking in quality either. If I said it was better than my mother's then I'd be in trouble, so all I can say is that it was really good. We also got an order of chicken jalfrezi for about $7, and that too was plentiful for the both of us. I highly recommend coming here simply because of the amazing value. Lots of food, small price, and great taste all combining to make one great hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Next time I visit my grandmother I will probably get some take-out from here. I am so tired of not getting all my food in to go orders. This is the third time in a week, and unfortunately, Biryani House gets the review. The accents are pretty strong, so I'm sure the language barrier didn't help. Of course, if you have a restaurant, I continue to be amazed at the places that don't/won't post their menus. I ordered two mild chicken tikka masala and one medium chicken curry. The lady asked about rice. I said yes. Then I said I wanted three naan. When my wife got the food home, there was no rice. Maybe I'm crazy, but I like rice AND naan. When I called back, the husband answered and apparently their choices are rice OR naan. So, we're now cooking our own rice and dinner is postponed. We actually haven't even tried the food yet. But there are at least three Indian restaurants in a straight line of two blocks. When you eat here, you should expect big portions of OK food for cheap, but minimal service. They will bring you food and water and then accept your payment, with nothing in between. I would say it's probably best to get a to-go, and I recommend boneless chicken biryani. About the reviews about dirty table cloths, they seem to have rid of that problem by not having table cloths. It takes a lot for me to give 1 star reviews but believe me, it's necessary. I would never recommend this place to anyone else. I made the mistake of choosing this place because I didn't feel like driving far from the university for Indian food and Biriani House was right around the corner. The best thing I ate here were the vegetable somosas which didn't have as much spices in it as I'd like and the mint chutney they served to me was way too acidic from the vinegar. The butter chicken was decent but underseasoned. The sauce could've used more flavor and finally for dessert, the rice pudding was just okay but left me wanting more almonds.....more pistachios. I was not satisfied with my meal. Dang, I've never said that in a Indian restaurant before. I'm shocked here. Usually a bad meal is forgivable if service was good and if it looked like the owners made an effort to keep the place up. There was none of that. The tablecloths have dark stains on them like they haven't been washed before. The restaurant overall is puzzling to look at because everything is mismatched and some of the tables have office chairs. I was there for 30 minutes and none of the workers in the restaurant cleaned any of the dirty tables and every time I needed something from the waiter, he was too distracted watching the news. Powerful flavor! I have tried all of the biryanis, and the spices are just right. I also recommend the shrimp masala and the dal (crushed lentils). The lunch buffet is also very good for the price ($5-6). They had some slow cooked beef vindaloo that was excellent. It's a small place, and the service can be sparse at times, which is why I usually place a to go order. The waiter that is usually there when I go is pretty nice, and tries hard. I went into Biriani House with a friend to sample the buffet during lunch. The food was pretty bad compared to the 3-4 other indian buffet my friend and I had gone to. The rice was hard and the food was very bland. It tasted as if it had been reheated from the day before. The sanitation of the place was also very poor. The drink glasses and silverware seemed very dirty. Worse of all was the fact that there was old rice all over the table even though it had been bussed already. If possible to give this place a 0 star i would do so. Especially since the much superior and only slightly more expensive Star India is across the street. read more
