This place was nice and the outside seating is cozy. A small bee issue but nothing major. I ordered the Mac and cheese as an app and the house burger with an egg on top. Both were pretty good and flavorful. The egg was perfect in enhancing the flavor of the burger. Mac could've used more bacon. It was just sprinkled a bit on top. This is a very nice Bar/Grill! Located on the main drag in Peekskill, it affords nice access to a lot of other places without being over-run. Their draught menu has a lot to choose from. Be sure to give a look over of their specials since they are very well chosen, described and prepared (as per my dinner accomplices). Brunch. Must go for brunch. $23 for the whole shebang, drink included. Bloody Mary mix is spicy and full of flavor (pickled veggies are a huge bonus!). Extensive beer list, and it changes frequently. Ingredients are local or organically sourced. I have yet to have something that I truly didn't like, or had issue with it's preparation. Service at the bar is generally faster than sitting at a table, and certainly faster than sitting outside. But on a beautiful fall day, hard to say no to sitting in dappled sunshine out on the patio. Going to give it 4 stars for the atmosphere, the service, and the dinner my wife and son had. All that said, they destroyed my steak. I ordered the steak frites medium rare and it was well done and under seasoned. I mean, I'm shocked show such basic entree got destroyed so bad. How do you f-up a steak that bad? I asked the waitress to slap the shhh out of the cook and record it for me. I still ate it since I was starving and we waited over 20 min for our order. I tipped 20% since the waitress isn't the one who burned the crap out of a perfect strip of beef. But damn if I'll ever come back here after shelling out over $100 for 2 adults and one child and leaving dissatisfied and disappointed. read more

GPS and BEER go well together. Imagine that you just finished a full day of shopping at the outlets and you're both hungry and thirsty for a good craft beer. An online search suggests a couple of places and one of them not too far off the route home sounds promising. Thus we arrived at Birdsall House. A beautiful drive across the Bear Mountain Bridge and through some wonderfully twisty motorcycle/sports car roads down into Peekskill to a very unassuming building. Apparently, we were still early enough on a Friday evening to not need a reservation, as we were promptly seated. This is a funky, in a good way, kind of place. When they ran out of empty tables they carried one in from the back of the restaurant and seated four more people. During our meal they proceeded to project the movie "On the Waterfront" on the wall across from our table. Their web page says that Sunday night is Movie Night (but today was Friday)! This is a craft beer lover's haven destination. A clipboard with separate sheets of paper for the menu has a page with 20 draft beers, listing their styles, ABV%, state of origin, and price/size. Beers are not sold in all the sizes listed (6, 8, 12, & 16 oz.). Higher ABV offerings may only be available in 6 or 12 oz. sizes while lower ABV choices are available in 8 and 16 oz. Flights are also available - 5.5 oz. pours of 5 beers $14. Growler prices will depend on size and beer choice (32 oz. fills $10-$19/ 64 oz. fills $18-$35). We started with a Left Hand Sawtooth (ESB nitro) and a Port City Colossal One (Imperial Stout), both ($7/16 oz.). Both were excellent and prepared us for the Smoked Pork Nachos ($14). They smoke their own meat here and it is right up there with the best we've ever had. Their blue corn tortilla chips are covered with cheddar cheese, black beans, tomatillo salsa and sour cream. Yum! My wife then chowed down on a Birdsall Reuben ($16) - house made corned beef, Cajun remoulade, braised cabbage, New York white cheddar, on sourdough rye bread, with French fries. This was excellent. Delicious corned beef. Because the smoked pork in the Nachos was so good I couldn't resist ordering the Smoky Pulled Pork Sandwich ($14) - the pork is served with a Carolina style BBQ sauce, fennel, and celery slaw on a brioche bun with fries. Another winning choice here. This calls for a couple more drafts in celebration... So, a rare Hill Farmstead George (Brown) and a one-off keg, Cigar City Dry-Hopped on the High Seas (IPA) both ($7/12 oz.) helped us enjoy our sandwiches. With food this good I have to ask what's for dessert and if it's made in-house. Our server said the cheesecake is not made in-house, but is made by a local woman just for Birdsall House. Needless to say I ordered it ($8). It was truly RICH... but really good. I wish this place was closer to home. But on second thought, maybe it's good that it isn't! read more

Birdsall House is a great new bar option in Peekskill. The Brewery has long been the most popular (and only) bar spot in Peekskill. Admittedly, Birdsall totally ripped off of the Brewery's concept, but they did it with grace and made it their own. Birdsall House's food selection is more towards the gourmet end, with unique and delicious dishes that stray away from the same old dining choices at every bar or restaurant. I ordered the veggie burger and it was delicious- it was a beet burger, onions to top it off, goat cheese, a perfectly toasted bun, and some of the best french fries I've ever eaten. It complemented my giant glass of beer perfectly. The draft selection is nice- they had about 12 options I believe, and the servers are knowledgeable if you need help deciding. One complaint- they give you pansy little glasses of beer. Where are the huge glasses? Stop trying to be classy. Anyone who has been to the Brewery knows that it is about the size of a sardine can. On a weekend night, it is nearly impossible to move-not that there is really anywhere to move to- but sometimes it is just plain uncomfortable. This may be part of the appeal for some people, and I think Birdsalls maintains the same "dive bar" appeal without being too big. This means less chance of waiting to be seated, better chances of getting a table, and better nightlife prospects. Upgrade. The table we sat on- walk in and to the left, near the window- was awesome. My friends and I spent a half hour staring at this table, with various bottletop riddles (the puzzles where you get some letters and pictures and need to form the phrase, printed on the bottom of bottlecaps) trying to solve them all. We got quite a few of them! Our server said some guys who worked there made it and that it was their child. I could tell from fly that got fossilized in the table, along with the bottlecaps, that this table was an authentic work of art. If you get this table, look out for the fly, I thought it was really neat. I look forward to going back to Birdsall House in the evening and seeing what it's like. That being said, I will bring some pepper spray and no more than $20 cash. read more

The tables order was completely wrong and when asking the server what happened, we were met with the attitude of a spoiled child and told that "we were so stupid, we don't even know what we ordered", needless to say the entire table after that decided to get up and walk out of the restaurant. Went in for lunch today, and without a full house the noise was way down, so I could hear the rest of the table. The local beef burger was solid and the fries and house-made ketchup were rockin'. Birdsall House is another Peekskill staple and they're currently celebrating their 10th anniversary of bringing great local craft beer and a gastropub experience to our little rivertown. Like Peekskill itself, Birdsall House is a little bit big city, a little bit small town. The craft beer selection (20 on tap, plus bottles) is unmatched anywhere else in town and can handily keep pace with any NYC pubs. The food (and let's be honest ,the price) is also city caliber, with creative burgers and sandwiches, vegan options, shared plates, and one of the best brunches in town. But when you're in there, the place is undeniably Peekskill. If you don't already know everyone in there, you probably will soon. The huge bar welcomes conversation, and don't be surprised if you find yourself chatting with an old-timer who remembers when the place was something else, and maybe something else before that. As night falls on the weekends - local bands squeeze in and suddenly you've got dinner and a show. The summer is when Birdsall House really comes alive. It's home to Peekskill's only beer garden, tucked between two of Peekskill's early 20th century buildings adorned with creeping ivy, that would feel right at home in Brooklyn. There's no better place in Downtown Peekskill to dine and drink alfresco on those beautiful Hudson Valley summer days. Birdsall House never closes, and we hope it never does. Even now, as the coronavirus pandemic has shuttered the restaurant to dine-in guests, Birdsall continues to provide Peekskill a great gastropub experience through their take-out and delivery service. Came here for Sunday brunch while in town visiting family. I love a spot with an appreciation for history and local food. Good food, great service, and the brunch prix fixe is a great value. Between all of us, we probably ordered almost everything on the menu. They did a great job putting twists on classic breakfast fare without being excessively trendy or eliminating the elements of them that make them classics to begin with. Standouts were the yogurt parfait and the hash tart. The hash tart is truly ingenious- a chunk of perfect, creamy, starchy hashbrowns in tart form for a maximally crunchy, crispy exterior. Drop it on a dollop of sour cream and you have the perfect savory breakfast side. Seemed like there may have been a subtle squeeze of lemon or something on top- a perfect bright note to break up the richness and highlight the flavor of the browned layer. Divine. Lovely outside seating. I gave this a two stars because the staff - all of them- complain about how "expensive products are", the owner "doesn't order things", "business is bad". If that doesn't make you feel happy about being there, I don't know what does! They put vegan options on the menu- both online and in print- then the server told me they 'were removed awhile ago'. The Bloody Mary is hands down the BEST in the county, besides its small (shrinking) glass - there's no garnishes! No lemon slice, celery, olives, or pickles!! When I asked bartender for some, he told me, "those things aren't cheap you know!" Umm - it's celery dude!- There is NO way to come back from this, no matter how good a bev. I went here for brunch with 4 friends today. Within 5 minutes I was pleased because their beer list had Ithaca Apricot Wheat, my favorite beer that is brewed upstate and hard to find in stores around here, let alone bars and restaurants! I ordered Huevos Rancheros and while it was incredibly tasty, I was not a fan of the eggs, black bean puree and sour cream on TOP of my tortilla because it became soggy, hard to eat, and messy. I never had huevos rancheros before, so maybe it's supposed to be that way? I tasted my boyfriend's maple-glazed pork belly and fell in love. Sigh... A friend ordered the oat-crusted french toast that looked amazing. I didn't taste it but I did try the nutmeg whipped cream that topped it and it was incredibly light and fluffy. We finished by sharing 2 of the maple-bacon ice cream dishes, which comes on top of a cornmeal waffle and served with apple butter. Fantastic. Brunch dishes range from $9-$21 but include a free mimosa, bloody Mary, or 8oz beer. For the 5 of us, the bill came to $116 before tip. The reason I am not giving 5 stars is because for 5 people, they should have had a better seating arrangement for us. We had a reservation, so they knew we were coming. They sat 4 of us in a booth, and then tagged a table onto the end and had the 5th person in our party sit at the table... he was sort of far from the rest of us and it was slightly awkward. Took a ride up to Westchester to do some leaf peeping, pumpkin patching and mother in law appeasing. Drove through Peekskill, and let's see, is there anywhere to eat around here, is there... oh, look, a bunch of people sitting in a garden next to a... what is that? It was a lovely crisp fall day, so we chose a table outside, which was great for our three year-old. This being Sunday brunch, I availed myself of the $19 prix fixe, which included a beer, an app, and an entree. What with Birdsall's extensive drinks menu (and fact that my MIL was with us), I opted for a Bronx Rye Pale Ale, a fine choice, although not as hoppy as I'd hoped. The app was a bowl of smoky brisket chili, plenty of cheese and plenty of beans -- a satisfying treat. Entree was corned beef hash -- but nothing from a can. This was real beef hash, mixed in with crispy Yukon nuggets and caramelized onions, certainly one of the tastier hashes I've come across. The bacon was a bit on the limp side, wallowing in what I believe was apple butter. The others opted for sandwiches, I believe, and it's a credit to Birdsall that the toddler devoured most of what appeared to be a gargantuan grilled cheese sandwich. After brunch, we let the child run amok among the picnic tables in back, and I observed a sign (beside the garden gnome) claiming that all of their meat came from a local farm. This is not hard to believe, given how tasty it was. Birdsall appears to have live music and a thriving bar scene. I'd say I'll be back, but for the fact that date night these days doesn't last more than a couple hours, and driving to Peekskill and back might just expend the majority of that. Happened upon this place after looking at several others in the area. Glad we went here! Hubby had the beyond burger and I had the quinoa beet burger, which does not sound like it would be good, but it was excellent! Has an earthy flavor, but you really don't get a super strong beet taste. Texture was great. I think their ketchup is homemade, I really liked it. Fries were fantastic. Staff is very nice and booths were spaced out, so you're not really sitting around a lot of people during the time of Covid. I felt that the place was clean and the staff was taking the time to make sure that everybody was safe. Bathroom was clean, and that's always important to me, I think you can tell a lot about a place by the cleanliness of their bathroom. We would eat here again. read more
