Living in New Braunfels, we have bakeries, yet, when in SA, Bird Bakery has never disappointed. From the delicious chicken salad, protein plates, darling tiny cupcakes in little egg cartons, to the kind and excellent service. Recently, I had a few hours to wait for my granddaughter and I parked at BB, Of course I ordered a few things, and got some perfect cookies to go. Never did I feel that the business was suffering due to my bench warming in this comfy spot. The music was soft indy rock that did not interfere with any of the work I brought to do. My only problem was there were flies in certain areas and they were landing on the cookies & brownies. My friend refused to order. They weren't around the cupcakes. We were next door at Nekter so we saw this place and decided to stop in. I'll never pass up a good cupcake (my weakness)! Sadly, it was disappointing. The staff was rude and unhelpful. I was obviously bothering them and interrupting their group conversation. I tend to be super friendly and polite. I even asked if she had any recommendations. She said "no". We got two normal size cupcakes - chocolate/peanut butter and carrot cake. The carrot cake was delicious. It was very good. The chocolate/peanut butter wasn't very tasty. This bakery is the absolute cutest little place I found while searching for bakeries in San Antonio. This is located in Terrell Heights, in a beautiful neighborhood. And given it being a year for covid, I was unsure if I could go in or if I needed to order ahead of time, or if they only offered curbside. But let me relief you of your questions. Yes this place is opened for business. You can dine in (outside or inside). You can come in and order cupcakes, cookies, and sandwiches. They also sell cute coffee cups if anyone needed to know that. The staff wears masks, baked goods are behind a glass (as per usual) and you are greeted with a friendly staff. It's in a small plaza, but I went around 4pm on a Friday and there is plenty of parking. For price point. I ordered 4 cupcakes for 13.00. So 3.25 for the regular sized cupcakes. So super reasonable in my book. Also, if you want to try more flavors, but don't want the regular sized cupcakes, they sell minis! Also, when I go to bakeries to buy cupcakes. It's very important to me how they package them. And I must say Bird Bakery nailed this part. Your cupcakes are secured because the box they come in has individual 'slots' so your cupcakes don't roll over or touch each other when transporting them. Every time I go to a bakery, they just put my cupcake in a paper bag or in a loose box. Their boxes are pretty high quality as well. Lastly, their cupcakes are delicious! Moist, perfect sweetness, and spongy. I'm surprised this place doesn't have over 1,000 reviews on yelp. It's definitely under rated. I ordered the Fresh Strawberry, Award-winning carrot, Chocolate Salted Caramel, and Chocolate Peanut Butter. A lot of interesting flavors to sample. My favorite part was the frosting which was fresh, creamy and had a rich flavor to it, especially the fresh strawberry icing. However the cupcakes themselves were a lot more dense than I would have wanted and a little dry as well. So I found myself enjoying the frosting and avoiding the rest of the cupcake. Meyer lemon pound cake- this was unlike anything I'd ever tasted. It is very lemony, I mean VERY! So if you love lemon then you'll love this. The top has a very concentrated lemon flavor as if a glaze was poured over it. It's dense and yet moist with a crunchy top. All of the goodness of a pound cake not to be confused with a lemon loaf! Strawberry cupcake and red velvet cupcake- did not taste fresh. I came at 10am so alleviate this but they were hard and crumbly. The strawberry was very sweet. Had plans to go to the Laika bakery, but with the fundraiser they were having the line was like a block long. Decided to check out bird bakery a place I had only had the pleasure of trying its mini cupcakes. Me and my friend ordered the tarragon chicken salad with a bowl of squash corn chowder, and a regular latte. I was saddened when the only nondairy choice for the day was almond milk. Thankfully I am not lactose intolerant, and chose to get whole milk latte. The food came out before our coffees, it was a bit busy when we walked in, but I'm sure if we had not asked if they would be delivered they would have been forgotten due to our numbers being picked up when our food arrived. The chicken sandwich was hearty in the middle, but by the end of the bread you were left with extra bread. The flavors were not anything exciting, didn't especially care for the cherries added to the chicken salad. The squash corn chowder was good, but could've been hotter. A++ on the music selection. I need EVERYONE to take several seats because this is hands down the best bakery in San Antonio. Honestly the texture is always soft. The ratio of frosting to cake is *chefs kiss*! I wait every year for their seasonal Nutella flavor which happens in September. Not gonna lie... The staff was extremely helpful and courteous because of our first time experience. We ended up asking what the first and second recommendation they would choose for sandwich's. They did not disappoint. At one point back in line to grab cupcakes, they asked who was next and the guy behind me responded. She looked at me and worded I'm sorry, I laughed and said it's all good. The servers/workers are friendly and helpful. The food was amazing! The sandwich's we got were large and more than enough for my wife. Paired with what I assume are homemade/fresh cut potato chips the combination is perfect. We also splurged on cupcakes but only got velvet cake. Where do I begin! I've been here before but couldn't remember why I didn't come back and after trying several flavors, I know the reason why. Walking in, the place is clean and vibrant. A little bougie for some country folks but nonetheless quant and welcoming. The people behind the counter were professional and exceptional! They were patient and knowledgeable and helped in every way! BLUF: all cupcakes, except one, was moist but extremely dense (not fluffy or light), no flavor. The ONLY flavor you get is in the frosting NOT the cupcake. Each cupcake is either vanilla or chocolate based. The frosting is what the flavor profile is, NOT the cupcake! Each cupcake ranged about $3.50 each. Recommend the carrot cake cupcake and the Mexican hot chocolate brownie out of all that I tried! Here is my assessment of each cupcake I purchased along with some family member blind test taste results. Please remember that each person's pallet is subjective and the way you like your cupcake may be different from what I like to bake and eat.... 1. Lemon cake: I was hoping this cake would gut punch me with flavor but again it disappointed! There was minimal to zero flavor of lemon! Not in the frosting or the cake. The cake also seemed under baked because all I could taste was flour! I had 3 family members try it without me telling them what it was and one said "cornbread", the other "vanilla" and the last said "coconut"...none said lemon and they all said the consistency of the cupcakes reminded them of cornbread but wet cornbread. Again the cupcake was dense! 2. Decadent chocolate: there was nothing decadent or chocolatey about this cupcake. It had a very slight hint of chocolate. It reminded me of a red velvet cake where the cocoa is minimal. The cupcake itself was moist but extremely dense, not light and fluffy. It seemed like they over developed the batter which is something they may be going for but it isn't for me. Also, when you say chocolate, I'm expecting a bam in your face chocolate! You can tell the ingredients are of high quality but I wish the flavor and texture was there! The frosting was ok, but nothing special, it was a bit gritty and again had a subtle hint of chocolate. My family members described this has "this ain't chocolate", "cornbread again" and "red velvet" 3. Chocolate salted caramel: it appears as though all the chocolate based cupcakes uses the same chocolate batter because it was the same consistency and flavor as the decadent chocolate (dense and flavorless). The salted caramel frosting was edible but I barely Tastes caramel. There was salt and that's about to. 4. Chocolate Peanut: same chocolate base cupcake. The frosting had peanut butter flavor and that I could taste. It also had peanuts on top which gave to another peanut flavor. I was hoping for a Reese's peanut butter slam dunk in your taste buds but the peanut butter was subtle however I actually did recognize the flavor even though it was subtle. 5. Strawberry cupcake: the base was just vanilla. There was ZERO fresh strawberries incorporated in this cupcake! It was straight vanilla! The frosting had bits and pieces of strawberry, but was gritty again and I could barely taste any strawberries! The cupcake was a vanilla base and is similar to the lemon cupcake. I cut all of the cupcakes in half and it seems like the vanilla based cupcakes were under baked! My family members said it tasted like "vanilla", "cornbread" and "vanilla" 6. Seasonal cupcake (egg nog): this for me was by far THE most disappointing of all. I love eggnog and I was really hoping beyond hope that this cupcake would have flavor and yet again it disappointed! Just like the lemon, it was dense, moist and under baked. It tasted bland and like nothing! Where was the cinnamon? The nutmeg? 7. Carrot cupcake: now here is a cupcake that I would recommend!!! It had the right consistency (light and fluffy), not dense and under baked...AND...it was truly flavorful! There was even raisins in it, which I don't care for, but this made up for the other 6 cupcakes I got!!! The frosting definitely had flavor too! I'm not sure if there was cream cheese incorporated into the frosting but it was incredibly flavorful! You could taste the carrots, the cinnamon, the spices that make up the flavor of a true carrot cake! Out of all the cupcakes I had, this is the one I recommend! 8. Mexican hot chocolate brownie: this chocolate brownie is where you will definitely get a chocolate flavor and I also got an explosiveness of cinnamon as well. Usually there should be a little subtle hint of heat (cayenne) but I didn't get any. Either way, it was good! The top layer was incredibly crispy but the brownie part was moist and rich! I would recommend this as well. I really wanted to love this place but I probably will not be back and will continue to search for some amazing cupcakes in San Antonio!! read more

I'm holding a star until I try their cakes or sweets. I went in for my birthday with a couple of friends. Here's why I gave one less star. They have two, one massive, & one normal sized seating areas for more than two people. Yes, I understand it's a small space, & it's pandemic season - still. My friends & I sat at the huge table, because the other one was taken up by one person. (When there were literally 6 other 2 person tables wide open!) Growing up around the world, where people share space without issues. The huge table could easily seat a few groups of 2-4 people. But, in America people don't ask, or sit & share space. So...the three of us took up a huge table due to no other option. I got the tarragon chicken salad sandwich & a bowl of tomato soup. The sandwich was absolutely delicious. The bread was fresh, full of seeds & so good. The chicken salad was sooooo good. I literally could've sat there with a bowl & just eaten it by itself. It had a couple of tomato slices & fresh arugula on the sandwich.it was so good. Totally recommend this sandwich! The tomato basil soup was delicious. You get a whole sandwich & a decent sized bowl of soup. So, skip the bagged chips!!! The soup is vegan. But, it is tomato soup. Duh. I'm guessing the creaminess is from nut milk. (Just makes me giggle to even type it. ) The spices were pure happiness. I tend to find myself comparing everyone's tomato basil soup to La Madeline. Don't! This soup here can carry its own without any issues. I will come back for the soup. Lastly, I got the cherry sensha tea. I enjoy green teas. Be it matcha, sensha, or just normal green tea. But, if you say there is another flavor, I want to taste it. I did not taste a bit of cherry, only the earthy flavor of the sensha. I will be honest, it took me hours to finish this tea. I won't be back for that one. One of my friends got one of the quiches, & stated it was really good. Her Mom got the tomato basil soup too. She also really liked it. So, the lack of the star is from the lack of decent seating for more than two people, & the tea. But, they're a bakery. So, if the bread is made by them, it's a huge thumbs up. Their tarragon chicken salad is absolutely fantastic, & their tomato basil soup is really very good. I will be back for a cupcake, or three. All in all, good place to check out. Today my Bestfriend Marlen and I decided to grab our purses, sunglasses, and hair flip ourselves into the day. We were determined to marry the morning/noon, no one would stop us! We decided to have lunch at Bird Bakery. It had been a little over 2 years since I have been here and it was just as I remember it. I absolutely love the environment, it's a vibe. We stood in line for about 10 minutes before being able to order - but it wasn't a big deal because we got to look at the menu and cupcake flavors without being rushed. We paid and waited for our order. Tables are pretty limited but we had no problem finding an empty spot today. They brought out our food within 15 mins of ordering. We ordered the California Turkey Sandwich which comes with a side of kettle wavy salt and pepper chips. It was amazing! I love that raspberry spread, the turkey is so fresh. All sandwhich ingredients felt fresh. I tried the Elvis cupcake as well. It was so yummy! Definitely recommend! Parking is limited but was easily available when we went - weekday. I had long heard about Bird Bakery and its famous owners but didn't have a chance to visit until the other day. My husband and I had dinner close by and I was wanting something sweet. I bought a half a dozen variety - chocolate peanut butter, Elvis, Seasonal (strawberry lemonade), strawberry, chocolate strawberry and red velvet. The Corrigan coffee cookie looked very tempting so I got that too. The mini cupcakes were divinely delicious. The reason for the 4 stars is that I felt the mini cupcakes were on the pricey side.
