Went for breakfast- had a reservation but didn't need it, the place was empty, and they still sat the two of us at the smallest table they had! I had been looking forward to trying the delicious pancakes that are the featured photo on their website. Guess what? They don't have pancakes on the menu. I asked the waitress and she said they don't do pancakes there because "the grill is too small". I am somehow able to make pancakes on a small grill pan at home, so that didn't ring true to me. I showed the waitress the photo on their website and she said she didn't know why that was there, since they have never had pancakes. Yum! I came to Birch & Maple the day after the 4th of July and boy was it packed. I got on the list early and we were seated relatively quickly for the high demand. I was with my grandfather and boyfriend and we were seated at a nice table in the outside porch area. Our service was very good and quick. We ordered right away and our food came out soon after. All three of us ordered the chicken sandwich based on the glowing reviews about it, and man was it good! Perfectly crispy and also slightly sweet from the bun. It was quite big for me but both my boyfriend and grandfather were able to finish theirs. My favorite part of the whole meal though were the fries. I'd read great things about the server but either she was having an off day or her best service is reserved for people who order alcoholic drinks - our sodas and our waters were never refilled. Sorry but I don't understand all the 5 star reviews on this place. Maybe the brunch is good but we were extremely disappointed in our dinner experience. Cocktails were nothing special. My pasta dish was bland and the sauce was so thick and unappealing I didn't even eat half. The chicken I added was very low quality and not worth it. There are also very few options here if you have any dietary restrictions (vegetarian or gluten free for example). We were seated in the front room which was loud with no ambience. Honestly, the food wasn't amazing but I'm giving it 4 stars because service was great and I tried their Bloody Mary (see picture) which came with fried chicken and the chicken was AMAZING!!! I don't really like fried chicken but I couldn't not try the Bloody Mary. It was so good I contemplated changing my order to the fried chicken and waffles but I didn't want to be that person. That's where this all changes. If you love EB like I do then you might want to make the drive to Frankfort for a weekend. Beautiful scenery and a world class Eggs Benedict. Even if you drive a few hundred miles for breakfast, it's worth it. This is hands down, the best Eggs Benedict I have ever eaten and I have eaten a lot of them. I also had a bowl of fruit to go with it. Strawberries, bananas and pineapples cut into small bite size pieces. If you eat fruit in restaurants like I do, you'll know what I'm talking about. Pieces that fit in my mouth versus pieces that took three bites to get in. And on top of that, they were neatly arranged in the bowl like the chef cared what the diners who were about to eat said bowl of fruit thought. The food is pretty good. I got the marinated tofu on the rice noodles. The portobello mushroom fries were much more deep fried than I expected. The disappointing part was the host and his weird negativity. On the outside he seemed upbeat but almost everything out of his mouth was negative. Well... shouldn't you have asked us first since we requested it? Then we were trying to tilt the umbrella, and he got all weird with us again telling us someone already broke an umbrella before. Dijon mustard in mashed potatoes? Our recent visit was underwhelming. Food was delivered incorrectly, it took way too long for our orders. Hostess didn't want to give us a table on the porch, even though we had a reservation that had been booked weeks prior and the place was empty. Super weird. We've had great meals at Birch & Maple, that's why we've returned. This time, the fried chicken was weirdly oversized, flavors just weren't there and for whatever reason, they put Dijon mustard in the mashed potatoes?!?! Let's just be clear: at no time, ever, is there a reason to put Dijon mustard in mashed potatoes. It's wrong on every level. I'm all about jazzing up the mashed spuds, but Dijon mustard is never the answer. My overall impression is that they sent the good cook over to the Mexican restaurant next door. It's the only explanation, as our food was so far from what we had previously experienced. Brunch has always been solid, so we'll go back for that. read more
