Building a business with a food truck at Off The Grid and farmers' markets across the city, Bini's Kitchen opened their brick & mortar location at 1001 Howard several years ago. They also have a bustling store at the Ferry Building. Sunlight pours through the windows- almost the entirety of its walls are windows - and you can see the staff hard at work making momos, the delicious Nepalese dumplings they became known for. Momos have either vegan or meat filling, your choice. We tried the chicken momos, tumeric (jeera) rice and two different stews including my favorite, baigun bharta, grilled eggplant and onions in a tomato sauce with spices- SO delicious! I'm already planning to return for their combination plates both vegetarian/vegan and the grilled Nepali chicken, too tempting to resist. Many of their offerings are vegan and they're so flavorfully delicious, I'd happily be vegan for a week out of every month eating nothing but Bini's delicious food. The Howard street store is spacious and on this day bright. Order via To Good Too Go, price $9.05 for a packed Container of mixed MOMOS Lamb, Chicken and Vegetables that included 2 vibrant sauces. The MOMOS dumplings and side of sauces were flavorful but not overly spiced. Staff were pleasant, and order pickup took only a few minutes. As for parking there was a space in front along Howard Street. Well worth checking out. Great option for Nepal style street food. read more

I was running errands in the area and was absolutely famished--pleasantly surprised to find this hidden gem. I enjoyed their momos and the curry sauce--I think the combo plate is the way to go in order to fill up. I got the Gurkha Chicken, which came with plenty of meat--I ended up with enough for leftovers for the next day's lunch. It reheats well! Wow I love this place! I been chasing their food trucks in the past, but glad I finally get the chance to actually check out their stable restaurant and not a truck. It looks like this their main location with sit down dining and you can see the ladies making the scrumptious dumplings on the tray. I bought three Chicken MoMo which is Nepalese Ground chicken Dumpling serviced with spicy tomato cilantro sauce. plates to go to let my family try it. It was soft, tender very similar to the Chinese dumpling which I enjoyed. Yummy in my tummy! The most popular street food in Nepal is the momo where each dumplings are stuffed with either Lamb, Turkey or Tofu and Vegetables and served with a tangy roasted tomato and cilantro sauce. I also tried the Gurkha Chicken which was a bit spicy that is made of Boneless chicken thigh stewed in yogurt, tomatoes, and our Bini's Kitchen house spice blend. You definitely needed rice to go with this dish. Great flavoring. I would love to come back here and try more items, and I am glad I took a day off work to make a side trip here. I like everything about this place except something they can't control, there is no Muni stop near by and both maps and muni trip planner route you through that iffy 6th and Market area. Try as I might, the best I could do is go downtown and take 14 to 6th and Mission to get a little closer to Howard. Even so, walking towards Howard, it felt like The Tenderloin, although we were left alone. But at the corner of 6th and Howard, where Bini's Kitchen is, it is like a breath of fresh air. Honestly Bini's Kitchen deserves a special shout out for the lamb momos they serve. Hands down one of the best momos I have had in my life, trust me I have had plenty and the moms here are a star dish. I first found them when I was exploring the farmers market around the ferry building and I fell in love with these momos. The value for money is great (8 pieces for 10$) and they come with a tomato sauce at the top. It's so tasty that it's actually finger licking good. I have tried the turkey momos also and they are also quite legit. The lamb momos are the show stoppers definitely and I almost go once a month to the farmers market for them. I have had Bini's when I worked in FiDi years ago. I'm glad I have found them again as they are at Farmers Markets around the city! I picked up their Lamb Momos ($10 for 8 pcs) at the Stonestown Farmers Market. It comes with a tomato sauce on top. It was better than I remember! It is a bit gamey but sooo tasty. It's just that it my first time having a momo and am thoroughly enjoying how super good it is. I tried the veggie momo and lamb momo and I'm totally hooked - I look forward to trying the turkey. Nicely filled dumplings, balance of firm yet tender exterior, and this sauce that I can't fully explain - it's familiar and has a little kick - that pairs well with the momos. The veggie momos were well seasoned and fresh. And the lamb momos (and I'm not really a fan of lamb) were juicy and flavorful (without being too lamb-y). I could have eaten two dozen of them. Fantastic Nepalese food in the heart of an up and coming SOMA neighborhood. I've had lunch here four or five times, and the food is delicious, super authentic, and very consistent. The restaurant is situated in the ground floor of a newer building, so the dining area has polished concrete floors and filled with light, with a beautiful design. Momos happened to be the closest thing I could find in the area, so I opted for an order of them! I got half vegetarian momos and half turkey momos. After eating two of the turkey momos, they got a bit dry and tiresome. It really needed a bit more of the sauce, which I found quite delicious! I am totally in love with Bini's Kitchen and their entire staff. I visited Bini's for late lunch with a friend yesterday. This was my first time at Bini's (and having Nepalese food) so decided to go for their plate which includes your choice of 1 to 3 meats, 4 Momos and a side of rice. For my main meat, I went for the Gurkha chicken which was absolutely delicious. The chicken was very moist and the sauce was perfection. I like all my food a little spicy, so I appreciate that they have some "spicy paste" (I don't know what you call it) on the table, which took my chicken to the next level. The lamb minos were also very delicious and cooked to perfection. Another thing that I really liked about this place was their portions. I am not a big fan of leftovers, so I appreciate when a business serves you the right amount of food that you need to feel satisfied. Aside from the food being delicious, their staff is so nice! My friend and I hadn't seen each other in a while so we were talking for hours, until we realized it was 3:30pm (they close at 3pm) and they hadn't tried to kick us out. We apologize for keeping them waiting on us and they smiled and said it wasn't a problem. All the ladies working there were really sweet and nice. I will definitely be back! read more

Bini's Kitchen first brick and mortar is finally open at the ground level of the Bill Sorro Community Apartments! I've had their food stand/kiosks bookmarked for years but I didn't work anywhere near them so this location is a welcome addition to SoMa. A fast-casual Nepalese eatery, Bini's Kitchen is currently only open Monday - Friday 11 am - 3 pm for lunch. The menu: BYO Khana Meal Plate w/ 4 momos (dumplings) and rice: 1 entree ($12), 2 entrees ($15), and 3 entrees ($17). Currently, there's 5 entrees options: Gurkha Chicken (similar to chicken tikka masala), Pork Choila (roasted pork), Kwati (Nepalese chili), Baigun Bharta (braised eggplant), and Daal (lentils). For your meal plate, you have a choice of turkey or veggie momo. Lamb momo available for +$2. Entrees and momos are also available a la carte. There's also a Nepalese Burrito ($11) available. Everything was well-spiced and I like that the momo skin wasn't too thick at the crown. The lamb filling was lean, dense, and pretty gamey. I hope they consider adding a salad/veggie or brown basmati rice for the base. There's no water station so I had to buy a bottle of water. I tried Bini's first location at One Post Plaza when owner Binita Pradhan took over the yellow Zog's Dogs kiosk and served her specialty momos. My review of that spot started with "It's not like you can get momos anywhere..." (review: http://bit.ly/2DX7QFB). What a difference three years made since you can get momos pretty much anywhere now. But Bini's do stand out in texture and flavor, so I was happy to see her open an actual brick-and-mortar operation on the somewhat challenging corner of 6th and Howard where it occupies the bottom floor of the newish Bill Sorro Community building.This is where Defenestration stood before with the colorful vintage furniture flying out the windows. However, it was sadly demolished and now stands a very contemporary and probably one of the nicest-looking low-income housing complexes in the city. I swung by at around 1:30PM on Friday, which I thought would be after the lunch rush. No such luck as it was packed with a queue of local startup workers in wait. They were in soft opening mode operating on weekdays between 11 and 3 or when the food runs out, whichever comes first. Beyond the lure of a five-bean Nepalese chili and a Nepalese burrito called the Nepalito, whatever that is, the "Build Your Khana Plate" menu option was the most appealing to me because it offered two entrees (Ledo Beto) plus four Momos for $15. I ordered the Gurkha Chicken and Baigan Bharta (Braised & Mashed Eggplant) over Rice with four Veggie Momos served with dollops of Bini's Special Sauce. Because there was nary a seat to be found, I took it to go since I live really close by. In great anticipation, I opened the takeout carton only to discover that the harried server forgot the chicken (photo: http://bit.ly/2DX7sqD). I was momentarily bummed by the omission and the $3 surcharge for my meal. But then I figured it was a sign from the Calorie King letting me know not to be a glutton. The eggplant was certainly tasty, but it was once again Bini's veggie momos that stole the show. Oversights aside, I'll come see Bini again. Love the plate of dumplings, rice and entree - so many choices! My favorites are lamb momos and chicken for the entree, and I'll have to keep coming back to try them all. Fresh ingredients and very filling, lots of choices. Highly recommended for lunch. I was really envious of the smart folks who brought coworkers and meetings here to sit down over lunch. Yay! I'm a fan. My company actually leases out the commercial space, and they sent out an article featuring the owner and new restaurant opening so my coworkers and I came out to support! This is my first time trying Nepalese food. I ordered the plate that comes with rice, meat, and 4 turkey momos. The plate of food was delicious and very filling for only $12 including tax. Momos were flavorful and the sauce on top brings it to the next level - a bit tangy but not spicy at all. The meat was drenched in the yummy tomato sauce balanced with the spiced rice. Yet another fast casual joint in SoMa. Except this one is Nepali! I've been a fan of Bini's since I first tried their momos at the Farmer's market. Very generous portions and some unique flavors that are hard to find elsewhere. Turkey Momos: These are so dense and hearty. The four on the combination plate will definitely help fill you up. The thick semi-spicy sauce is far superior to lighter soy/vinegar dips. The dough is nice too, thick but not too thick. Gurkha Chicken: Large chunks of boneless dark meat chicken in a curry infused broth. Seemed to be somewhere in texture between a curry and a stew. It was decent, but not something I'd go out of my way for. Pork Chhoila: Dry spiced pork chunks and lots of them. Loved all the flavor going on. Great if you want a serious dose of meat. Kwati: A bunch of different type of beans in a chole-like sauce. Pretty solid as far as vegetarian goes. Loved all the flavors going on. Jeera Rice: Colorfully yellow rice. Not overly flavorful, but that's fine since everything else is packed with spices so this is a nice pairing. Mango Lassi: Pretty standard. I wish they were open on weekends so I could drop by while out doing errands since I live across town, but I decided to make the trip for lunch today and I'm so glad I did. I called in my order and the food was ready in under 10 minutes. I wasn't even halfway there yet when I got the text. I was worried my food would be room temp, but it was still warm when I finally got there. The employees are really friendly and they have hand sanitizer out for you. I got the Gurkha chicken curry combo with turkey momos and turmeric rice. The portion size is huge! It could definitely be 2 meals for some. There was a lot more chicken in the container than it may appear. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the curry sauce over rice was delicious. The dipping sauce for the momos was flavorful and I ended up using the whole container of it. I'd highly recommend this place. It's inexpensive and it comes with a generous portion, SO worth it.
