How many cities can you visit and say, "Gee, I feel like Nepalnese or Himalayan food tonight"?
Not sure how to describe this review as I've actually tried their food several times before dining here, their first brick and mortar location.
Being a regular Ferry Farmers Market shopper, I stopped at their Saturday market stand on the driveway and wrote a less than raving review of their stand. I was expecting a XLB experience, given the visual similarities of the momos to that. Fast forward to early this year and, frequenting Oracle Arena regularly for basketball games, I had a second opportunity to enjoy their menu at their club level stand. I really enjoyed my meal but never had the time to comment since it was short lived.
Fast forward two months later, I took my coworker a block away from my office here for a late weekday lunch. I had a broader view this time in ordering from the Khana section of their menu (combination plates). I chose a two item combo with eggplant (Baigan Bharta) and vegetarian momos (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=TKOsh-iA5uLQgyMLYB6p4A&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); like the food that I enjoyed at the arena, the curry rice combination was perfect for me, not overly spicy and deep in flavors (they must have cooked this bad boy for a while. The curry made for a good dipping sauce for the momos too. My friend had the roasted pork (Pork Choila) and turkey momos (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Rl_H-AI99F46jEpmj9r_-g&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); we actually traded two momos with each other so we could enjoy a combination of both types. The food is served cafeteria style so stop at the counter to order and pay before getting a designated number stand. There is hot sauce on the table, in case you want to spice it up further like my coworker did. We opted for their ice water which is served in a dispenser near the window.
About halfway through my meal, I recognized the gentleman who worked the Oakland stand and vice versa as the staff were having lunch. I complimented him on their food and asked whether they would resume the stand for other events there (unfortunately no). After sitting down to finish my meal, he brought a complimentary drink (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=dQya19q9fmpSoUbE_1r4dQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) (mango lassi, I believe) to me. It was a welcome gift and I mentioned to them how much I enjoyed their food when they were at the Arena. Friendly service, staff that remembers you, good food... what more can you ask for?! Now you know where you can find Nepalese and Himalayan food... read more
