Dealt with Saul for my beloved BMW. A 2004 330i in Imola Red with 147k miles (a ZHP for those of you following along at home). Needed rear brakes. An easy job, but so often can be a nightmare when leaving it with someone you don't know. Saul immediately put me at ease. I knew what he was talking about and knew that he was about using quality parts. Fortunately, it only needed the pads and not rotors too. Saved me some money. He gave it a looking over and said everything is in good shape with no leaks noted except a small coolant leak at the thermostat housing (which I knew about). "Don't buy a BMW" they said. "Don't you know BMW stands for Break My Wallet" they said. "The Maintenance! Thats how they get you!" they said. They said, I don't listen. So I bought a used BMW 2011 328i coupe December of 2016 with around 48k miles. I didn't buy a warranty (because I don't listen). Last month the dreaded happened. Im driving on Contra Costa Blvd on a Sunday afternoon and my Car dies. I was able to get it to start up but it would be "Herky Jerky" for a few moments and die. Luckily I was able to get it parked in a safe parking lot. I sat there for a few moments extremely pissed off, and began to look on yelp for mechanics. I stumbled on "Bimmers Performance" and liked the reviews I read but was skeptical because, well they didn't have a ton of reviews and I don't trust many people. I called the shop the next day and spoke to Saul. I let him know that I was going to have my car towed there ask if he could take a look at it and then get back to me. He agreed and I went on with my day. Later on that same day he called me back and this is where it got interesting..... "Hey Max, this is Saul. I had a chance to look at your vehicle, ran a few tests and it looks like the issue could be your Vanos. BMW usually covers this under Warranty" I responded "I didn't get warranty and I know my car is past 50k miles so i doubt it would be covered. Is it possible for you to do the work?" Saul responded "I can definitely do the work, but I still suggest you take it to BMW to see if they cover it, sometimes some parts like the Vanos is covered under 100k miles" I was a little taken back that he was referring me to BMW, actually losing business, but I remember reading in the reviews that he recommended the same for a few other people and it worked out well so I thought "Why not give it a try". A few days later I have my car towed to Concord BMW and they notify me that not only is the defective car part under EXTENDED WARRANTY(Just like Saul said) but because of the damage caused to my engine by it, they would replace my engine for free. I repeat REPLACE MY ENGINE FOR FREE!!!!!!!!!!!! That means I didn't have to pay anything! Not even a diagnosis fee. I saved THOUSANDS!!! All of this was possible because of Saul's knowledge of his vehicles but most importantly his HONESTY & INTEGRITY. When I went back to his shop to thank him, he seemed just as excited as I was that I got new engine. He didn't even charge me a fee to run his initial tests on my car. He let me know that he believes that honesty is the best way to do business, especially in his industry and I wholeheartedly agreed. I did a DIY on my car in my driveway last weekend that needed me to remove the bumper. After finishing up and reinstalled the bumper, I noticed I could not tighten the bolt on the bumper adjuster. There's no way around it for me to fix it, unless I remove the bumper again. Since starting over was a PITA, I decided to leave the car alone. I called Saul today to see if he could assist me. I explained the situation to him. He did tell me he was busy but asked me if I could come by around 330p, he will see what he can do. I get to the shop and he was finishing up working on another customer's car. After that, he asked me to pull up my car by the lift. We couldn't get the car on the lift because of my car's stupid side skirts. He then made attempts to install the bolt I mentioned. Unfortunately, he and I were unable to get the bolt installed as the only way to do it would be removal of the bumper again. He apologized for not being able to help me and I told him not to worry because I already had an idea that the bumper had to be removed from the beginning but was hoping I didn't have to. I thanked him for at least trying. I asked him how much I owe him for his time and he told me not to worry about it. This guy spent time with my car trying to help me and didn't want to take anything in return. I previously read the other Yelpers' reviews and all the positive feedback of him are accurate. My car is a 335i. So I found this place due to a last minute brake pad replacement sensor alert the day before my 4th of July trip...up to the mountains w/ a lot of hairpin curves and steep elevation driving. So I started calling around. Sal picked up and gave me a straight forward quote and said he could work on it right away. That alone speaks volumes...the owner/technician picked up the phone and was able to commit a price and schedule....that's pretty rare in this day and age...especially among BMW master technicians. So the shop is next to Costco so easy to find...and I admit I have seen it for many years going to Costco so that I felt reassured that the place has been in business for awhile. The garage is no frills but so are Sal's prices. Sal gave me a decent price (well below dealership) for some maintenance (oil, filters, etc) along w/ the brake pads and true to his word, he started working on it immediately. I typically DIY for small things like filters, but Sal's quote made it an easy decision. All OEM parts and he reset all the indicators. His tools and familiarity with BMWs were top notch. About an hour and half later, the car was good to go. Sal also did a road test and checked/topped off fluids and tire pressures.I found out later that Sal has been in business here for 15 years. I also overheard some customers who came to pick up their cars...clearly Sal has earned repeat business...so that was good to hear. BMW owners know that dealership maintenance can be a huge issue once your car is past the included package. Although I have been taking my car to the dealership for key issues..I found that maintenance costs as the car aged kept climbing....and I'm the type that keeps a car 10+ years as the norm. Buying a used car is tricky but finding a honest and ethical mechanic to service a used car is sometimes impossible. Quick story, our 2011 BMW was mis-firing and getting horrible gas mileage. Saul scoped the car and determined that the ignition coils and spark plugs were bad and needed replacing. (Approx $1,000) Before doing the work, Saul suggested that we contact a BMW dealer to see IF it might be covered under an extended emissions warranty. What?!?! Unbelievably, the coils are covered along with the labor saving $600-700 dollars. This car and my other used BMW have found a new home for any service going forward.
