Front differential leak; vehicle is drivable. Leak was just noticed, with no other driving symptoms reported. After I took the vehicle to the shop, they diagnosed the vehicle for free and told me what was the issue. I was sent a quote on what repairs are needed. The shop was in constant communication during the repairs and were very transparent on what they were doing. They didn't force any other repairs on me. I went to Above Auto Care to have my Subaru's 60k mile maintenance done. I like to perform all the manufacturer recommended maintenance on time to help my car last as long as possible. When I went to the dealer, they quoted really high price and added a bunch of unnecessary services. I was able to get an estimate from Vuong which was much more affordable, and it was great to be able to text back and forth to make sure I'm only getting the services I really needed. It was also super easy to make an appointment. They were able to get me in and out in the same day even with all the difference things being done to my car. It was also really convenient that they have after hours dropoff available. You just park your car in their lot, and they have a safe place to drop off your keys. This was helpful because I had some work meetings I had to take in the morning at the time they opened, so I was able to go in before they opened and drop off my car. Such an honest and hardworking crew! I've been bringing my car to Above Auto Care for over a year now, and I can confidently say that this auto shop is the real deal. I waited a while to review this place because sometimes things start off well during the first experience and then things can drift off. I've now had both small and major services done to my car here, and each time has been a great success. I first brought my car in for a routine oil change. Vuong noticed that my gasket cover was leaking, but there was no forceful push to get anything fixed right then and there. Of course, I got it replaced, but I appreciated that they weren't trying to sell me on a ton of other things. They are very understanding and will be honest with you in regard to what needs to be fixed or replaced with your car. I'm so used to being on the defense and having to get a second opinion due to the antics of my last mechanic. Vuong and Ken are very trustworthy and truly look out for the benefit of their clients. My car started losing power when I accelerated. I asked them if they could diagnose the problem. Based on what I told them and what they saw after looking at my car, they said I needed new spark plugs. The acceleration issue that I was having was gone after they installed the spark plugs. Most recently, I noticed that my car started violently shaking when I hit the brakes. I asked them if they could do an inspection on my suspension parts. Sure enough, I had let my brakes get down to the lowest of the low. They replaced them, and now the shaking has stopped. I'll admit that sometimes I'm neglectful with certain maintenances on my vehicle. But hey, I'm working on it! I'm just grateful to have Vuong, Ken, and the rest of the Above Auto Care team to assist me when I'm having these kinds of issues with my car. I feel like it's actually made me more aware and now I've started to pay attention to even the little things that may become an issue. I'm so happy to call Above Auto Care my car shop. I don't understand how someone could charge $12,000 for repairs that leave me with a vehicle worth $500 in parts only. My father has used this place for years, but when it came to the big work ( swap out engine, replace transmission) it seems they took the money for doing something they were obviously not qualified to do. When the Check Engine light came on shortly after all the work, I took it elsewhere. To be told it was the worst and most dangerous hack job seen in a long time. There's no recourse for us to get any refund. I'm sick about it. So, sure. Get an oil change or something here....just don't get anything big done. read more

Beware racist owner and lies. The location is run down with a lot of cars sitting in the lot. The office smells bad and chairs had stains. Whoever was at the front desk does not know how to treat clients. Rude upon entry, farted without excusing himself and cannot answer a simple question. I asked, if my car would be returned back to me in the same condition it was given. Instead of giving reassurance argued with me. What a lie, I have given out good reviews too. Von (or perhaps Vaughn?) is the propietor is fantastic. He got me out of a jam the other day. The shop is tucked in the back is modest, but her generosity and kindness are huge. It isn't a fancy-looking place, but the waiting room is comfortable. (I noticed they even have Oolong Tea!) He doesn't charge for diagnostics, and in my case, my completely dead battery, needed to be replaced. I only had an hour or two until I needed to be elsewhere, and he recommended I go to an autosupply store where they would install one for me if I purchased it there. He jump started my car for me so I could get there, and didn't charge me anything. I would return there again happily, though I live in Oakland so is a bit of a haul. I just happened to be out to take my daughter to DVC for an event. Above Auto Care is the Place and Vuong is the Man. Brought my GMC Sierra 1500 in with a cracked a radiator. Vuong and his team replaced it for a fraction of the cost at the dealership. Work was done timely and in a professional manner and I was kept up to speed via text during the process. When I picked up my truck, I mentioned a problem I was having with my other vehicle, a GMC Terrain I recently brought to Les Schwab to have the original TPMSs replaced because they weren't working anymore. After Les Schwab installed the new TPMSs, they weren't able to get it to connect with the vehicle's CPU display, which still showed that the TPMS system was not functional. Les Schwab told me there was nothing they can do because there must be an issue with the CPU on my vehicle and told me that this was something only the dealer can fix. When I mentioned this to Vuong, he said to bring it by for him to take a look. Vuong and his team fixed the issue in under an hour and didn't even charge me. read more

TL:DR; Wanna pay quadruple the cost for parts and then have them cause damage to your car that they refuse to hold any accountability for or even try to correct? This is your spot. Brought my lady's car in for inspection and service since she is commuting a further distance now for work. Told them it just needed to run for another 6 months to a year for our purposes. It wasn't in bad shape, just wanted to get the overall health of the car checked. They find no major issues, but suggest a tune up, including changing out the ignition coil, some spark plugs etc. Approve this, and they do the work. Charged me 400 dollars for an ignition coil that should have costed around 100 to start (after I looked it up in retrospect). We get the car back, and when I take it to fill up the gas tank the next day, I notice the SRS warning light is on, indicating an issue with the airbags. This was not on prior to them working on it, and indeed if it had been, should have been noted in the inspection. It was not. Try to get a hold of the shop to speak about the issue, but they were closed until Tuesday. I tell my lady to drive carefully to work and we'll get it addressed shortly. The next day, the car won't start when she's trying to leave work. Amazing all of the sudden the battery is dead. She gets jumped and gets it home. I go out and buy a new battery to replace it, but check the car first and it starts, but now the instrument panel won't light up upon starting the vehicle. I try it again and it turns on (the instrument panel), but the SRS light is still active. I swap out the battery a few days later, its running fine, but the SRS light is still on. At this point I've talked to the owner who agreed to take a look at it but refused to take any culpability for the issue. After consulting some mechanic friends and doing some research on the work they did, it I discovered that there were components of the electrical system that they would have interacted with in changing the ignition coil. Today when I came down to have him take another look, he absolutely refused to inspect the car, insisting that nothing they did could have caused the issue. Had he just agreed to look at the vehicle and assess the issue, and fix what is probably a minor problem, he could have earned a customer for life. Instead, I now intend to dispute the charge with my credit card company and if necessary take him to small claims after I've had it looked at by a reputable, reasonable mechanic. The instrument panel comes on 50% of the time now and the SRS light is still on. I wouldn't trust this man with a wrench, much less a car, ever again. read more

Great customer service and excellent communication. Fair and honest service. Fair prices- probably close to 1/2 the cost most dealers charge. Most importantly I feel like I can trust them to do quality work which they will stand behind. Being a mechanic is a lot like a doctor. You gotta start with the most common issues and go from there. They don't have X-ray vision or a magic 8 ball to tell you exactly what's wrong. I went in with some mystery suspension clunks, creaks and grinding sounds. They diagnosed it to the best of their abilities and found a number of issues which they resolved with a very quick turn around time and a fair price on our Honda pilot. He also repaired the heater/ac blower and recharged it for us as well. He also fixed the window regulator on a Mercedes for us and there were never any surprises or price changes. Engine issues can be really tricky. You put a code reader on and start from there- but that can also be a "process if elimination" or trial and error. Often times there are multiple issues but you need to start with the most common first. I would highly reccomend above auto care to family and friends. Having a mechanic you can trust is more important than an hourly rate any day! read more

Above Auto Care went above and beyond to repair my dad's car. His engine light went on in his car while driving on Wednesday and we found out it's due to code P0843 (transmission issue). The D was flashing in the car and the rpm was going over 4000 when he's driving 30 mph. I took it to our usual mechanic on Thursday and was told they don't work on transmission problems but gave us a referral for another shop. I called and was told the wait is a few weeks out. My dad needed his car right away so I proceed to call at least five other auto shops to see if they can diagnose the issue and repair it. Upon calling above auto care, Vuong, the owner picked up. Instead of telling us he can't take any more cars or just giving us another shop to call, he told us to bring the car in and he will take a look at it. It meant a lot to us because it shows that he actually cares about his customers. We dropped off the car and after an hour or so, Ken called us and let us know that the switch needs to be replaced and the car needed a transmission flush. The quote he gave us was very reasonable and both my dad and I were very glad it didn't cost an arm and a leg to repair the car. And most importantly, they were able to have it done the same day which we truly appreciate. My dad and I picked up the car shortly before they had to close and everything was resolved. He needed the car ASAP and when no other shop was willing to even take a look at the problem, Above Auto Care took care of us and fixed the problem for my dad at a reasonable cost. Small family businesses like them deserve a lot of credit and recognition for their hard work and dedication to help out the community. Brought my car to get a diagnostic test since it was occasionally make some whaling sound when I use the brakes. I knew my brakes were changes recently but not sure why it was making that sound. Left my car there for testing and got a call back from them saying everything looks good and in safe functioning order but since I didn't change my rotator or rotors? they said that that could be the cause. I appreciate their honesty and integrity. Gave me the option to replace both brakes and rotors or if it sound doesn't bother me too much then I can keep driving until the brakes actually need to be changed since it is safe to drive, just annoying l.
