Amazing! The ambiance is upbeat and fun! The waitstaff is happy to see you and welcoming. The service is classy but not snobby. The food, oh the food, the sushi is fresh, beautifully served, and tasty. I am in awe of the selection of sushi dishes, rolls, combos, and other Japanese delights! I must go back. I honestly am jaw-droppingly impressed which is why I have so little to say here. Just go. You will love it. read more

Such a fun night out at Billy Sushi! I had dinner here with a friend one cold fall evening. We ordered a few different rolls to share, along with edamame and a couple apps. We also started off with cocktails and ordered the cute flamingo drinks to sip on during dinner. Unfortunately I don't remember the names of ANYTHING we got, but rest assured, everything was amazing. The service in particular was top notch, which is almost always what makes or breaks an experience for me. Billy Sushi had been highly recommended to me, and it definitely did not disappoint. I felt like everything was okay. We were celebrating my birthday it was a party of 6. We had reservations and were checked in on time. No delay on seating, despite no one showing up on time, which was great. Ambiance was nice. It was packed. It seemed like a lot of regulars, in my opinion ,which is always great. Food was okay to me. I enjoyed my roll(s), but not the apps. Drinks were okay as well. My party enjoyed their drinks. Service was pleasant. Our server was professional and knew his stuff. My ONLY issue was he knew we were celebrating my birthday and some of my party had not completed their food, so I was stuck between waiting, paying and running late for my resv downstaris at B.A.D. I asked if it was possible to get a back door entrance to BAD, due to it being late, us running late, wearing heels, etc. He said he couldn't. I walked around and was waiting for my party to show up in the alley, I was actually talking to his sister (who was amazing), she's a hostess at BAD (Billy's After Dark), here he comes bringing a group two tables away from us through the backdoor as I was waiting for my party to walk around through the alley! Way to celebrate the birthday girl! I lowkey wanted our tip back. LOLBVVS Would I come back? Probably not, especially after witnessing that, but would definitely visit their sister restaurant BAD again. read more

Had my concerns about this place since it was getting hyped by literally everyone who likes sushi and unfortunately, it was definitely overhyped. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty decent sushi, but it's is not worth the price. You can get better sushi for even 2/3 of the price. I think you pay for the cool decor and upbeat atmosphere, which was nice, but I came for good sushi! The only item I had that was incredible was the Wagyu roll, but even that was like $35 and about 4 bites. Server took a while to get to us regularly but it was fairly busy. They also put all of the rolls on the same plate when we previously identified a gluten-intolerant person at our table and they had a hard time understanding that this was an issue. The gluten rolls were right next to the gluten free roll and we had to twist their arm to bring us another gluten free roll on a new plate. I struggle to think of a reason I'd go back with how many other great sushi spots there are around the cities. read more

The service was great and the food was exceptional. Fairly expensive but I thought that it delivered.

Billy's Sushi is a staple in Minneapolis. It's good! Their rolls are actually pretty stuffed with fish, which is awesome. Great date spot but expect to spend a bit. The service is usually good, but the seating is a bit cramped. They once seated me right against a pillar so I couldn't really turn, and weren't able to move us to a table because they wanted to save it for larger parties. read more

Guys, I am so not a sushi person. Like eating raw fish in Minnesota kinda scares me. I heard great thing about this place though, said it is the best they have had in MN. I decided to be brave and give it a shot, and I do not regret it. This place was really busy, make sure you have reservations. When you walk in, the place looks nice and bright, you got club music playing, pretty cool place. We got seated a little after our reservation time, but it was a Friday night and packed. The server was super nice! Answered all my questions about the menu and gave some great recommendations. I got the pomegranate mocktail and loved it. For the meal, we started with some nigiri, the fatty tuna, and wow was it good. Great simple starter before all the rolls came out. The sushi rolls were so beautiful, the presentation here is great. I enjoyed all the rolls our table ordered, my favorite was the Silly Billy. My husband loved the 2-14. We also got the George Clooney and the Double D's, which were good too. Overall, great quality here. If you are scared of sushi or haven't ever enjoyed it, come here. They will treat you well and give you high quality sushi. I can't wait to come back and try all the other options (btw the menu is endless, there is something for everyone). read more

I don't hand out a lot of 5 Stars but if this place doesn't deserve 5 Stars no one does! Now this was a fun night out with my Daughter, a Wolves game and dinner. Came here early, which I know is a good idea, I have tried to get a table here a couple of times just walking in later in the night...not going to happen! There was literally nothing that could have been changed for this trip! had some small plate items, tempura shrimp...avocado was awesome! I ordered a roll, wish I remember the name of it but it was perfect (could have been wrapped better but that is perhaps by design). The tuna was like butter, flavors were perfect! My daughter had the Udon and that too was damn near perfect! I had some Saki and then a cocktail with Japanese whiskey and I will say it was one of the best drinks I have ever had! A version of an Old Fashion with just perfect blending of flavors..I would have and could have had several of those! I will in fact come back just for that cocktail.. This is such a gem of a spot. A place to explore all aspects of the menu. enjoy the room, the people and most of all the food! KT read more

Came to Billy's for sushi in North Loop on Friday night after having reservations for a birthday dinner and when we got there, we were asked to wait another 30 mins standing around because their tables were backed up. The place was crazy busy and we contemplated going elsewhere because we were hangry at this point. Alas, we eventually got seated and immediately ordered so many different kinds of appetizers and sushi, I'll try to recall them all: edamame (gross and over salted), salmon carpaccio (so fresh, great quality fish), gyoza (++), age dashi tofu (tofu was good but broth was crazy salty), yakitori (it was just alright, a little flavorless), salmon nigiri (amazing), silly billy roll, naughty ninja roll, uncultured swan roll, and one other sushi roll. All of the sushi was fresh and tasted good but was brought out on the same platter so I didn't know which roles were which. Restaurant atmosphere is nice but extremely loud. There was a group of frat boys at the table behind us that had the owner Billy there and they were all rowdy as hell, yelling, but seems like they had fun lol. Maybe don't bring your parents here! read more

No doubt that this is THEEE best sushi in town. I have experienced many sushi spots in the cities and there are no others that compare, seriously. If you enjoy sushi, you NEED to try this spot. The space is very culturally modern with lots of fun things to see on the wall. The noise level is quite loud but not crazy. You can see the chefs making the sushi behind the bar which is really fun to observe. Billy himself walks around quite often and tries to speak with diners so you just might run into him. The prices are quite reasonable considering the quality and preparation of their sushi. A couple of recommendations: Salmon Nigiri, Miso Cod, & Lean Bluefin. You will NOT be disappointed; you'll actually be wanting more! Came here twice within the last 2 months for birthdays, and the bday person gets a free shot of sake. The only reason for the 4 stars is the time limit they place on your reservation. They essentially want you in and out in 90 minutes. Our reservation started late, but once that 90 minutes hit, we were getting the eye. read more

Came to dinner here for a friend's birthday and my first impression of the space is that it's beautiful and welcoming. The staff was super kind and we sat down right away. The dishes and drinks were great overall! For apps, my favorite was the seaweed salad and the JFC. The seaweed salad was a bit sweet and very flavorful. The JFC had a nice crunch to it. I enjoyed the naughty ninja sushi roll, it does have fish eggs on it so it's a bit more fishy in taste, which I like. Service was pretty slow, our server was great, it took awhile for our food to come out. Parking can be pretty challenging to find. Overall, I had a great experience! read more

Had heard nothing but amazing things about this place so had to try! Took four weeks to get in at a normal time with a reservation so just know you really should make one or be prepared to wait/get turned away. The restaurants pretty small so not a ton of room and availability for walk ins. We started with the seared salmon appetizer which was topped with avocado and truffle oil. Holy cow it was amazing! Super light but awesome flavor, would highly recommend. We then got four rolls to split - I can't remember the names of them but all were good. Nothing crazy or different but good size rolls. They had GF and regular soy sauce claiming the GF was low sodium but it didn't taste like it! They had cool drinks and I loved the cocktail I tried (picture). I can't remember the name but it was awesome! My reason for not five stars is it was ridiculously hard to get a reservation, the service wasn't super fast (food took awhile to come out), and prices were steep. The vibe is fun and the menu is full of options so definitely worth trying but be prepared for a longer dinner and spending the $! read more

Many great reviews and many sushi rolls on the menu, maybe should of just did sushi rolls. Worst and most off Omakase ever, shouldn't be called Omakase. Started off bad and wrong already with a sushi roll, one of the dishes was a full hamachi kama, super crazy and not ever an Omakase dish. The five of us had our own Kama, crazy. Omakase is basically a Chef's tasting, could be all sushi nigiri, maybe mix in one or two cooked fried dishes like tempura we had zero tempura. Chuka Ika Sansai is never a dish for Omakase or should even be paid for. Quite overpriced on all menu items that did not make up in execution. Chicken breast for Japanese fried chicken is wrong again, thigh meat please, karaage or tatsuage, which is it? Both isn't breast meat. And $13 made it worst. Serious training needs to be revisited here. In Japanese cuisine, we finish with the carbs not start with it especially a sushi roll and then finish with sushi (nigiri, for you Americans, in Japan just called sushi)? Totally no no. Great fish, we're in the industry you buy from our distributors and any restaurant can buy the best fish but needs to delivery correctly and the shari makes or breaks it badly. Here the shari had good flavor but quality of rice very low for your menu price. Please invest and educate that rice is most important. You don't need rice from Japan, Japanese rice made in California such as Temaki Gold, Tamanishiki is fantastic enough for USA. Yes, we're in Minneapolis, I'm bias from San Francisco, a sushi chef, import Japanese, visit Japan every year actually two weeks ago in Osaka, know a lot about Japanese cuisine, not your regulars, BUT still please look up Omakase and make it a special chef's tasting, tasting means small tastings, please. Or take it off your menu and let us order sushi rolls only. Beautiful atmosphere, ok service, needs more education as well. Bartender didn't care that a 3 word French wine was completely spelled wrong on the menu. Seriously, 5 of us, $1200, you near Nobu level price with average offerings. Worth maybe $500 at most for USA, in Japan whole meal could been $200 and beyond imaginable. Your bluefin tartare and uni ikura doesn't say it is a mini chirashi, we ordered it as an appetizer, we don't want the rice. So OFF. At one point, I thought I was going to getting a burger slider for one of the Omakase dishes! Please visit Japan, and learn the culture, respect for food, and most definitely the best service in the world. read more

I was in town visiting friends and they recommended this place. We got a 7:30 reservation on a Friday. We had a drink at the bar and got our table after just awhile. As a side note, it was quite HOT in there. We were by the door but it was borderline sweltering hot. Anyway, we were seated and ordered some drinks. (We also got miso soup which was excellent and piping hot.) I got the "Here Comes The Sun" which was very good. Haku vodka, yuzu, some grated cinnamon and a bunch of other stuff. Stellar. Like an Asian Moscow Mule... with cinnamon. I dunno, It was good so I had another. We ordered an off-menu item which was a soy-wrapped spicy scallop hand roll. It was recommended by a friend as their favorite thing "on the planet", but it was really just ok for me (5/10). I ordered some nigiri sushi items. Toro, sweet (raw) shrimp and eel. Excellent. I also ate the savory heads to my friend's surprise. Brains!!!! Service was friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was decent. Very nice. read more

If you love sushi you HAVE to come here! Our table ordered number 9, big blue wave and George Clooney rolls. They were ALL delicious. My favorite was the number 9! What I liked about this place is that the sushi tastes really FRESH. The ingredients each roll has were well thought of, you bite into a beautiful sort-of-electrifying world of flavors. You have to stop by. For two rolls the total came to about $45 which I didn't think was bad at all for the quality of sushi we just had. I unfortunately didn't get to try the drinks, hopefully next time. If you bring a date here, I'm sure they will be really impressed. Overall loved the ambience, service is great, rolls come to your table quick. Make a reservation before coming. The best bday miracle possible was a 6pm resy here Truffle salmon, ikura nigiri, shishito peppers, NoLo YoLo + Double D This and Bar la Grassa are probably tied for the two most recommended restaurants in Minneapolis since I've moved here...no surprise they're both in my top 5 restaurants! When it comes to higher end sushi restaurants, there are typically two types: 1. Quality fish over everything else (no frills, no rolls, letting the fish speak for itself) 2. Creative creations (expanding past the limits of traditional sushi). Billy Sushi is practically Hannah Montana with the best of both worlds‍ Even with the added ingredients in the rolls, you could taste the quality of the fish. Would recommend the NoLo YoLo for fish lovers wanting a lighter roll (my fav dish). The Double D was like an incredibly elevated spicy salmon meets California roll, also delish! In terms of ambiance, this was the ideal mix between busy and intimate. The noise level was perfect to have a conversation without feeling overheard. Service was also excellent, definitely efficient read more

A solid 3.83. I had a great time here, no lie. Atmosphere is on point, people are lively and seem to be in joyful spirits. The sake and cocktail selection is great and served in creative ways like a puffer fish cup. Ambience/decor is nice and classy. My next comments found below are my critiques. If an establishment claims to be the best sushi in the Twin Cities or is hailed by the public as such- then I would expect the food to be as such. However the sushi is just mediocre. I have definitely had better and way fresher sushi in the Twin Cities outside of this establishment. It's actually in Maple Grove - but I won't say which just read my previous reviews. I am from California originally and so that is my sushi standard- the sushi here is like the ones you get on the rotating belts in LA - at best. We got the Wagyu nigiri roll, screaming O roll, George Clooney, Caterpillar roll, and the Ninja one and the best one out of them all is the specialty Wagyu nigiri- it's the only one that made us go wow. The rest of the rolls were alright and the fish didn't taste super fresh and the rice wasn't the the texture I usually have in authentic sushi places. Now being in the Midwest I do not expect California or LA level sushi- but if one claims to be the best in town - I am going to give my feedback based on that presumption. Like I said there are much better establishments for sushi taste, freshness and texture here in the Twin Cities- BUT if you are looking for a fun time on a date, celebration, or girls night out the ambience here is definitely more fun and suitable for that type of drink and dine occasion. read more

Was our first time dining at Billy Sushi. Reservations are a must! Even though we had a reservation, we still waited about 15 minutes to be seated. It was very busy! Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience. We were seated at the sushi bar, so we were able to watch the sushi rolls be made. It's like dinner and a show! The service was excellent and quite attentive. Would come here again. Food: Rolls: Screaming "O": I did not ask about the server, but will make sure I do the next time around. This roll was inspired by someone. The roll was served in tinfoil and was hot (as in temperature). Would order again. 5/5 Silly Billy: A delicious roll with spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, and wrapped with avocado. It's also topped with different types of fish. Absolutely delicious. It's not too spicy, so someone who isn't a fan of spice is able to enjoy this roll without worrying. 5/5 Crunchy Roll: Your typical crunchy roll with shrimp tempura and flakes. Delicious. But wouldn't say its anything special. 5/5 Drinks: Sign O' the Times: Vodka cocktail with a sweet element. Not too sweet and not too boozy. 5/5 Whiskey Drunk & Bulletproof: 5/5. Apps: Edamame: Doesn't need much of an explanation, edamame is a difficult dish to mess up. 5/5 WalubTataki: I really enjoyed the sweet miso dressing! Would absolutely order this again. 5/5 read more

Billy Sushi had a couple items that impressed. I loved the Hamachi Jalapeño yellowtail! So fresh and delicious. The wagyu sashimi was outstanding! Yes it is pricey for one bite, but it was so delicious and tender, I would get it again. I am not a sushi connoisseur, the rolls were really good but I'm not sure if I thought they were elevated to the point of being way better than other rolls I've had. The service was good and attentive, no complaints there. We were able to grab a drink at the bar while we waited to be seated. The restaurant was brightly lit. The other things I tried, including the drinks, were also quite good. Tried the chicken nugs, good but I think the sauce they came with was more memorable. Overall, I enjoyed Billy Sushi and I would go back. I also tried Billy After Dark again, and I would not update my poor review based on this experience. The only thing it has going for it it that it's below a really good sushi place, but the overpriced drinks, standard bar tables and over-hyped constant marketing are not a draw to the basement bar. read more

I have heard good things about Billy, the owner and master mind of many other restaurants around the twin cities. He is a renowned sushi chef! So when he came out with a new sushi restaurant we wanted to try it out. It's was smaller than I imaged but beautifully modern, with blonde wood decorating the floors and walls. It is tucked in upity north loop, where parking isn't the greatest, so expect to walk a little bit. Make reservations! Otherwise, good luck getting in. Our server was friendly and helped us pick out some drinks to start off with. There were a lot of sake and whisky options if you like that. I asked for something sweet and the server suggested a "secret" drink not listed on the menu. It was served in this adorable swan glass(peep the pic). Although it looked pretty, the taste didn't match up. It was awful. Tasted like pure grape jolly rancher syrup. Maybe they made it wrong? I'm not sure how anyone could even drink that lol. I tried a starter salad with miso dressing. I guess I expected the dressing to be sweet but it was very salty. It tasted like soy sauce on lettuce, which meh, not for me. There were a ton of sushi rolls to choose from. I got a kick out of the silly names some of them were called, like the double D roll or the George Clooney roll. I had my eyes on the Uncultured Swan roll because I enjoy cream cheese in my sushi. Unfortunately, the taste just didn't do it for me. The avocado seemed to overpower everything and add an odd texture to the roll. My partner said he enjoyed the Double D roll. Service is very slow but friendly. We were out with another couple and they weren't able to split the bill for us. They said they don't split bills and instead everything just on one tab. This would've been nice to know at the beginning of the experience instead of at the very end. I've also never seen a restaurant do that. I also didn't care for the atmosphere. It was loud with weird club music going which didn't fit the restaurant to me. read more

I was not doing Billy Sushi justice by only getting take out-- Their whole dine-in experience is an absolute treat! Perfect for a birthday/anniversary/etc. or when you just need to treat yourself to some incredible, fresh fish and craftsmanship!! I love sushi and I love "salads" from Japanese restaurants, so we decided to do a bit of a sampler with some cocktails for dinner! Our reservation was for a Sunday at 4:30- If you want a peak dinner hour reservation, I encourage you to plan at least a week ahead! We ordered the NoLo YoLo and Screaming O rolls which were so different and individually amazing!! The Screaming O was like nothing I've ever had before-- amazing sushi but it also tasted somewhat smokey? I think I will always have to order it, it's really that special! The NoLo YoLo was more of a classic roll that was just incredibly fresh!! The waitress recommended it, and we totally appreciated it! The combo balanced each other out well. Then, we went for the surf and turf roll for our first taste of wagyu beef. I must say, if it's something you want to try this is an incredible spot to do it justice! The drinks here are a part of the experience so we went all in. We got the Billy's Live Bait (lovely and citrusy) and At Your Window (grape, but in the best way). The glasses were also adorable and they were so fun to watch be made by the bartenders! Overall, Billy Sushi was an incredible culinary experience (first time trying Wagyu!) that I hope to treat myself to again!! read more

This is a pumping scene, even in a Tuesday night. Fun, energetic, but loud and a bit packed. The service was top notch (shout out to our waitress from PR...!) and the nigiri was on point. Flounder, red snapper, wahoo... the best. Tuna sashimi 3 ways - so fun to taste the contrast of very fatty to less. The drinks - too packed with ice, pretty expensive and not very interesting (despite amazing sounding ingredients). Wine & beer more reliable with good choices. The rolls always seem expensive and a little small/underwhelming. Id say just go with the starters and nigiri & you'll feel more satisfied. Big bill, still felt worth it, but turn down the music a hair & amp up the size of the rolls. Then, perfection. read more
