February 13, 2026 I've never been to Billy Bobs or ordered anything from them until now. I've heard great things about them and thought to give them a try. I printed their menu from their website so a few coworkers and I could take a look and see what we may want. I decided to try the Cheese Sticks for $8, a side order of Mac & Cheese and a side order of Rosemary-Garlic Mashed Potatoes. My coworker wrote down a meal that she wanted and our driver was on his way. Upon his arrival, I was disappointed to get a call stating they had no Cheese Sticks on their menu. I was confused. I was also informed that they didn't have any mashed potatoes. Welp! There's that. They also had no Mac & Cheese. I ended up just getting the French fries. Enjoyed going to eat here to celebrate their 35th Anniversary. Only my second time here. We ordered the special for that day which was a burger, fries and a drink. We upgraded on one with onion rings. Upon arrival the young lady at the register wasn't very friendly especially celebrating a special event. We did get our food pretty quickly and it was very good. Onion rings a bit greasy. Decent seating inside but not really big. All in all we enjoyed the food and supporting our local businesses. Here in Hondo, we are lucky to have one of the only Billy Bob's. The staff, they're just kind all over, especially during summer. The food is wonderful! (I recommend the fried egg burger.) But don't get me started on the ambiance, it really puts you in an older era's setting, and I find it cool that there are many carvings in the benches. read more

My Mushroom Swiss burger was good, but it could have used more swiss cheese and the cheese was not fully melted across the burger. For a mushroom swiss one may prefer a thicker patty. These were thin, similar to frozen patties, but tasted like fresh (which I believe is how they are advertised). All the other ingredients--the lettuce, tomato, and even the bread--seemed fresher than usual for a fast food place. The bread was very soft and slightly fragrant though without much flavor, just a white bread bun. The whole sandwich seem to be devoid of seasoning but saved from total blandness by the swiss cheese. I love this place, we usually stop on our way to or from Garner State Park... I usually get the Giant Heart Attack burger, The Chupacabra, and or the 3 alarm burger those are my personal favorites... The fries are crinkle cut which make the burger even better... Atmospere is Old Fashion, quiet and quaint place to enjoy your food... Staff has always been friendly to me and i have no complaints its usually this oldrer woman who has taken my order... Its a Old Fashion burger joint so epect it to be different from your typical Mc Donalds, Burger King and even Whataburger (which i love dearly) You get what you pay for and you wont leave hungry i can assure you. Stopped here on the way back from a trip to Eagle Pass. Always wanted to check it out but finally did. Boy, I should've stopped earlier. Although the patties do appear to be frozen (it was at night and I was driving so I couldn't see) but they were really well seasoned. I had the Green Chile Burger and geez, that was one hella good burger. Seriously huge. And juicy. And loaded with toppings. So much that when I took a bite, the juices were rolling down the sides of my mouth. My son had the kids meal and he loved it. Said it tasted like a bacon burger (ok if you say so-I did try it and it was very good, better than some of the chain restaurants). Next time we drive through there, we'll make sure we stop again. Admittedly, I'm very picky about hamburgers, and theirs did not wow me. Decent, yes--but not worth a return trip, in my book. You can get much better a few blocks east at Hondo Cafe. However, I learned through the grapevine that Billy Bob's had good fried catfish--an absolute favorite, about which I'm also very picky. Based on this rumor, I stopped again and ordered the catfish plate, served with fries and coleslaw for about eight bucks. I was impressed at the near-perfection of the fish! It almost surely was frozen before cooking, something I can almost always identify due either by the awful coating or the mushiness of the fish. Remarkably, this was different! I couldn't tell whether it was fresh or frozen! As good as the fish was, they torpedoed the offering by including inedible coleslaw--a mushy, tasteless mess that seems to be endemic with most restaurants. Good coleslaw a wonderful thing. It's not difficult to prepare, and it wouldn't cost any extra. I just don't get it. Another disappointment was the paucity of fries. I'm not asking for fresh-cut fries (most restaurants don't know how to cook these, either), just a few more than seven small pieces. The hush puppies were the standard preformed and frozen ones you get at most restaurants. I thought about giving them an extra star for the fish, but I noticed I was freezing and the food was getting cold quickly. The air conditioning was likely cranked all the way down so as to make the kitchen comfortable. This is becoming very pervasive in restaurants due to the difficulty finding help. The owners are willing to sacrifice the comfort of the customers to keep the staff happy. Too bad the sign doesn't read Billy Bob's Catfish; that is definitely their long suit. Went there around 7pm on a Saturday. The place was packed with probably one table available but we were sitting outside since we had the dog with. They have probably 8 picnic tables out back that's covered and lighted. They had music over speakers which was a nice touch. I ordered the mushroom Swiss burger with sweet potato fries. It's a double meat burger and there was a perfect amount of mushrooms and the cheese was melted perfectly. Mushrooms were cooked to perfection and the overall burger was amazing! Only complaint was that the meat patties were on the thinner side. They were still 1/4 pound each, but the combination of the two was nice but a little thicker would've been nicer. My family stopped here on our way to Garner State Park. We saw it on the map and were looking for it. There's also a location in Castroville that we almost stopped at thinking we were already there. There's a huge sign outside that says junior family meal for 4 for 19.99 so we ordered that. The staff did not know how to ring that up and after going through 5 minutes of ordering each burger and it's toppings individually I find out that they are out of the junior burgers and we have actually just ordered a 29.99 family meal deal (which might I add is nowhere on their menu that I saw anyway). The burgers had globs of excessive Mayo dripping from them. My kids said they were "greasy". Burgers and sweet potatoes were fine but overall experience was not great. Sweet tea was empty. Asked the staff to fill it behind the counter and got to the table and it was unsweet. Decided to dump it and get lemonade- it was terrible and unsweet. The ketchup bottle on the table was sputtering almost empty. The cup lids. Next to the fountain drinks were empty. The place was freezing cold inside. My kids were shivering and desperate to leave. We'll stick to Whataburger next time which is just down the road. Okay food, poor service, uncomfortable environment means no return for us. read more

Stopped on our way home. We love hamburgers so we try new places. They were kinda slow at the order window don't know whether it was their girl or the family in front taking forever to decide. The hamburgers were good and we'll try the one in in castroville next. French fries were the crinkle frozen kinda so no kudos there. They were fairly fast once they got our order. They had outside seating but we stayed inside cause that family went outside and there must of been 10 of them. Not as clean as I would have liked but we wiped the table down ourselves. Picture this- You're just starting out on a 5 hour drive home after a LOONNNG weekend on the river, 4 days of "chilling" in the water and drinking. You recover every morning with a cup of joe, a breakfast burrito then you repeat. Now the last thing, the ABsolute last thing you need at this point is a big half pound greasy burger. We knew this and stopped anyways. Billy Bob's is just what you picture from the name- small building right off the freeway, wooden bleachers, one small bathroom, and a line out the front door by noon. Some of the options include a "heart attack burger" and the "giant" already mentioned. They also have chicken baskets and grilled chicken sandwiches. Thankfully I was blessed with some common sense and stuck with the junior burger which was still plenty big enough. With fries and a large sweet tea, the $5 combo really hit the spot. read more
