2 meat plate and 2 sides

Great BBQ and service! Order at the counter and pick up right after. They run out fast so come early. They only had brisket and sausage left when we arrived around 3pm on a Saturday. Both were tender and juicy. I had side of green beans and creamed corn. We also had the Frito pie. It looks small but they pile on chopped brisket and beans. Price is good for quality and quantity of food. Will need to come back early to try the rest of the menu! No room for dessert.

Been trying to finish this damn review since 2017 when they made Texas Monthly's Top 50 BBQ joints. Everytime i go to Eagle Pass, I drive through here. And I stop every single time. Had pretty much everything on their menu but my faves are the frito pie, the Heavy D, their beans and their smoked chicken. The frito pie is made with burnt ends and their beans and cheese and served in the frito bag. Delicious. Add jalapenos for good measure. The Heavy D is similar but they add chunks of beef and sausage topped with beans and sauce add the extra fritos and jalapenos to ensure you able to share (or not) Their beans are exceptional: peppery and with small pieces of brisket. Their chicken is smoked to perfection with the crisp skin lightly dusted in salt and pepper. Biting into that chicken just takes you to another place. A place where you're happy and puppies remain puppies forever. Make a day out of it and go hit them up. Totally worth the money and drive.

2 meat plate with Mac and cheese and potato salad

Wowza, worth the drive. This is the Wednesday lunch special at Heavy's in Hondo. 2meat plate includes 2 sides and tea. I chose the pork ribs and brisket. Very good, loved the potato salad. $14.95. I bet there's half a pound of brisket under those ribs. -- eating lunch at Heavys Bbq.

This was the rib membrane skin left from the back of the ribs. Not at all good when you are eating ribs.

2017's Texas Monthly BBQ Top 50 has not really lived up to the hype. I was a little disappointed. As you walk in the place is full of locals and passer by's. The meat is stored in a glass warmer under a heat lamp. Although the brisket looked promising it had a very nice bark on it. I asked the nice young man for some burnt ends to go along with my two meat plate of brisket and ribs. I picked the Mac and cheese with green beans. The brisket burnt ends was very fatty with a kind soft crunch. Brisket had a very strong oak flavor. The ribs were somewhat better. Nice flavor, but I was turned off by the membrane still stuck to it. The Mac and cheese was very underwhelmed with a flavor of generic box cheese powder mixed in a crock pot. Which is what it was served out of. The green beans tasted like they were once frozen and left to thaw in a pot with no flavor. Despite my taste shortcomings, the service was very nice and cordial.

Excellent BBQ and sides. I love the flavor provided by the tasty dry rub and the mesquite smoke. I was going to be in Hondo for a few hours so I did some research to find a good local place for lunch. Heavy's jumped out at me as a must try kind of place. I wanted to try as much as possible so i opted for the 3 meat plate. I had it with no sauce as I wanted to just enjoy the meat. Brisket, Sausage and Pork Ribs were my protien options. I liked all three very much and find it very hard to choose a favorite. Though if pushed my taste buds give the ribs a tiny edge. For sides I got the beans and potatoe salad and both are very solid accompaniments to the meat. Worth a trip to Hondo for!!

Full disclosure: I've visited more than three dozen Texas barbeque joints and I'm a pretty tough judge of BBQ. Having said that, lunch at Heavy's was a particularly disappointing end to an hour-and-a-half road trip. Heavy's definitely aims for the Texas rustic look, with heavy wooden tables and wild game trophies on the walls. The friendly people behind the counter bantered with the locals and served up generous portions of brisket, ribs and sausage at reasonable prices. So far, so good. The disappointment set in when I took my first bite of my sliced beef sandwich - tender, moist but almost no flavor. No pepper, no salt, no spice, no smoke. It was so bland that it reminded me of the pot roast meals of my Midwestern youth. I'm usually not one to sauce my brisket, but after a few unexciting bites I went back up to the counter to ask for a side of BBQ sauce. It didn't help. I also ordered a quarter pound of the beef & pork sausage. While better than the brisket, and a very generous quarter pound, it was on the dry and bland side. My companion had the three-meat plate with moist brisket, lean brisket and ribs. The lean brisket was tough and visibly dried out. The ribs were moist and meaty but lacking in flavor. In Texas, it's saying a lot that the highlight of the 3-meat plate was the side of green beans - bright, fresh-tasting and flecked with pieces of stewed tomatoes. The pinto beans were solid but unremarkable.

Simple menu but the food is amazing. The ribs and brisket is my go to selection with potato salad. The staff is really friendly too.

SOOOO glad we did; despite being ready to shut down for the day, these friendly folks were kind enough to serve us some of the best BBQ in the state! (And keep in mind, this was even with it being closing time, which says a lot!) I am somewhat a BBQ snob, have checked out many wonderful spots (Burnt Bean, City Market, Black's, Snow, Cooper's, Salt Lick, etc), and I try to judge at least the brisket category at the SA rodeo every year, so I ve had some good plates, but THIS spot is the truth! Got a 1/2 lb brisket and 1/2 lb ribs and deeply regret not getting more! The brisket was perfectly marbled, smoky, flavorful bark, thick smoke ring, just phenomenal. It needed no bbq sauce, but theirs is delicious nonetheless. Now those ribs!! Meaty, fall of the bone, tasty, tasty rub. Absolutely finger-licking! We will gladly make the 30 min drive from Helotes to TNT for our next bbq fix, we will be life-long, loyal customers! I was a little hesitant to write this review, because I don't want to have to bring a lawn chair for the line in the futue, but I still would, it's just that good!

The pork ribs were so flavorful and tender, and the brisket was absolutely delicious ; definitely the stars of the meal for me. Everything tasted fresh, smoky, and cooked perfectly. You can really tell they care about the food and the customers. Just a little heads up for anyone visiting: if you want to try their most popular items, definitely come earlier! We got there around 7 PM and they were already sold out of quite a few things, which honestly says a lot about how popular this place is. Even with some items gone, the food we did get was amazing and totally worth it. I'd 100% come back next time I'm in town!

(IYKYK) Best BBQ in Texas is what I've heard and that's precisely what I experienced. Parking lots are nearby at a price ($28 for 2.5 hrs), unless you get lucky with street parking. Took us 30 min in the line, 10 min to order, and 1 hr to eat - plenty of time left on the parking meter which we prefer rather than cutting it close and getting a ticket. 2.5 hrs for parking felt rather safe for us, if you're wondering. Indoor and outdoor seating is available with plenty of tables. TVs inside for game days to indulge in 2 loves at the same time - food and sports. Ambience is warm, welcoming, and simply chill. Line up, be patient, and order to your liking. Ordering process - request for bread, ordered cold items first (potato salad), moved forward to order hot items (beans, Mac and cheese), grabbed a blueberry cobbler on the counter, and moved forward again to order precisely what we came for... the MEATS! Paid our dues, got fountain drinks, and found an open table to accommodate our party of 4. Open seating! TIP 1: They open at 11 AM, we got there at 3 PM, and they were out of beef ribs already. So keep that in mind if you're there specifically for that. TIP 2: They have 2 sauces from what I could tell - Original and Sweet Sauce. Sweet Sauce was my favorite, but just make sure both are on your table to try out. Live dangerously and mix them! Sooo good... THE TRINITY is what we ordered - or at least, that's what the server told us. The Trinity = Pork ribs, Brisket, and jalapeno cheese link. Omg... every single bite sent us to Heaven and back. Jalapeno cheese link was packed with jalapeno flavor and as if it was soaked in cheese yet didn't look like it. The brisket was the best I've EVER had - thick, juicy, savory, and now set the bar high for all future briskets. Pork ribs - 2 lbs and glazed. Oh man.. just thinking about it makes me depressed like a long lost distant relationship I know won't work out (we live in Nor Cal). Melted off the bone, juicy, smoked and cooked perfectly to... perfection. Slather your favorite BBQ sauces however you'd like and enjoy Nirvana throughout your time at Pinkerton's!
