Had a girlfriends weekday luncheon here and had an enjoyable lunch. I ordered the all you can eat soup and salad bar, perfect on a fall day. The chicken tortilla soup was fresh, with good amount of chicken and veggies. Cheese and chips were plated on the side. The salad bar had a good variety of veggies, pasta, dressings, and fruit. Honestly I was full after one bowl of soup and salad ! lol wasn't able to take advantage of all you can eat. Service was friendly. They had a great outdoor patio, awesome weekend entertainment. If you know Matt Simmons, you know I like to arrive ahead of schedule. Gives me time to soak in the vibe of the place and, more importantly, work on a proper buzz. Got seated immediately, but I'll admit, it took a good 8 to 10 minutes before anyone checked on me. I was sitting there parched and looking like a forgotten extra in a cowboy movie. Once they spotted me though, things turned around fast. Service kicked in, drinks flowed, and all was forgiven. Still would've liked to sneak in a beer or two before I had to start fielding questions about my week at work. Normally I'm a Bud Light guy, but for whatever reason, this felt like a Miller Lite kind of night. You know you made the right choice when each one tastes like it's opening the door to the next. Menus were a bit of a letdown. Flimsy, faded, and borderline sticky. I went searching for fried mushrooms, but the print was so rough it looked like it said "Fred shrooms." A place with this kind of rep should fix that simple detail. Food-wise, I ordered the large pepper steak and took a trip to the salad bar. Gotta give props to the young gentleman working that station. It was spotless, organized, and clearly taken care of by someone who gives a damn. That salad bar had more hustle than some kitchens I've seen. The pepper steak, ordered "hot," packed a solid kick that had me nodding in approval. Not just spice for show, but real flavor that lingers in the best way. Final thoughts: clean place, friendly staff, no surprises on the prices. It's what you expect from a solid steakhouse experience. Not mind-blowing, but dependable, and sometimes that's exactly what you need. Four stars. Birthday dinner with family. Called ahead and had our table of 11 ready to go. Dinner portions were great and food very tasty. The chicken fried steak is amazing. Great place for family gathering and celebrations. Service was wonderful even though it was quite busy. Grilled one of our steaks wrong but manager got that taken care of. Free dessert for birthdays. Only one reason why I don't give it 5 stars. They charge a fee to use a credit card. This doesn't make sense since we are moving towards cashless future. But they advertise when you search the restaurant that they serve potato skins, which are our favorites yet every time we go there they tell us they don't have enough potatoes or the cook doesn't want to make them so we are searching for a new location that makes great potato skins. Came here on several recommendations from a few of my coworkers. My daughter and I took a day trip to Castroville and I was asking my coworkers where a good place to eat. They all said drive down a little more ways to Hondo and eat at Hermann Sons. I'm so glad I listened. Friendly servers, food was delicious. I got the pepper steak with cheese (medium heat)and onion rings. The medium heat was perfect. My daughter got the hamburger and fries, which she enjoyed. The place seems steady with customers too. Nice place! Friendly greeting and seated soon on a busy Saturday evening. First the salad bar is excellent! Spring mix, romaine, iceberg, and spinach start the trip, lots of good accompaniments and fruits and lots of different dressings. My grilled catfish with rice pilaf arrived hot and was delicious! His steak and shrimp were cooked perfectly and had a huge hot baked potato side. The fresh baked bread with cinnamon/sugar butter set the tone perfectly! Visited this place after going to the cornfield maze down the road! I had a pecan chicken-fried chicken! It was very good and the cutlet was a thicc boi! Our server was very fast and kept our drinks topped off! The place is popular, so we walked in and waited about 15 minutes to be seated which was a breeze since there's a little shop to browse located inside the restaurant. Hermann Sons is our go-to spot when visiting family in Hondo. If you've ever spent time in Hondo, you know about Hermann Sons. If you live in Hondo, you know the people who own and work at Hermann Sons. This great steakhouse is known for its "Original Alvin's Pepper Steak," which is beef patties stuffed with peppers and onions. It is my husband's favorite dish. I opt for the chicken fried steak or one of their many specials that rotate each month. They are also known for their salad bar. It's not a huge bar, but it is full of fresh greens, salad toppings, and freshly made pasta and veggie salads. Don't forget the homemade croutons. The chicken wings are also wonderful. Slightly crispy and served with a spicy hot pepper sauce. Of course, their steaks are pretty darn good. Excellent, actually. The food is locally grown. At one time, they had their own garden outside of the restaurant. I'm unsure if they are still doing it, but you can tell everything is fresh. The staff are courteous and accommodating. They take very good care of you. Prices are reasonable, and the restaurant is very clean. There is a bar for whatever libations you may want. Right inside the entryway is a gift shop with lots of fun, kitschy items to peruse and purchase. This place gets busy, so you may want to make reservations, but often you can get seated in short order. If it's hunting season, I suggest reservations, regardless. The restaurant is busy with hunters during the season. If you're in Hondo, stop in for some fresh fare. If you're not in Hondo, take a trip out there for a fantastic steak. read more

For an amazing steak, I would pay the price! But in this case, I ordered the biggest steak they had to offer, and the size of my steak was small, dry and sides were small too. (The bread we got before our meal was good). 2. Service : our waitress , seemed to have little experience . My wife and I attended a friend's birthday party at this establishment. We had one good size room that connected with the outside patio. The food that we had was limited choice to either a Angus beef patty or a chicken selection. Our servers took care of us very well and made sure we had plenty of tea and water And extra plates to be made available for when a time came to serve the cake. The parking lot was very well appointed and the total atmosphere inside the restaurant was Texan in ambience. The restaurant feels very causal as well. We walked in and did have to wait on a hostess and were given our estimated wait time. We killed time by looking around the little shop. My family is born and raised in Hondo, Texas and Hermann Sons Steakhouse has always been the go-to spot for us to meet, catch up, and often celebrate with one another while having the best service and food we could find in this town. We have a very special place in our hearts for Hermann Sons as we have not been disappointed in the service and quality of food every time we come here. This past Christmas we rented out the back rooms for our large family to gather (we are about 30+ in size) and was able to work with the staff on coming up with a nice set menu to have our family choose from. From the get the coordination with the staff on what the menu would be, how many folks they should expect to come, and the amount of space we would need was super easy and stress free! I highly recommend scheduling and working with the staff here on bringing in your own family, friends, or even coworkers to be able to meet and spend some time with one another around some delicious steak meals or not (they have plenty of salad and vegetarian items as well)! The staff were super helpful and ready and willing to help us out with all the extra things we needed and asked for (plates for our cake we brought in, extra ranch for the uncles who needed it on their salads, extra chairs for the additional friends that showed up with our family members, etc)! All of the food was delicious and prepared and ready to go when we needed it! The presentation of all of the food was fantastic as well. I love the small shop at the front of the steakhouse. It was a great way to grab some last minute Christmas gifts for my family (where I forgot to get them something). We browsed around and found some really great items and even some Hondo Owls items as well. First impressions on Yelp are often accurate, but in the case of Hermann Sons Steakhouse -- less emphasis on "steakhouse" and more emphasis on small-town home cooking -- my first impressions belied the experience that followed. A mediocre 3.5-star rating and a jaw-droppingly awful "featured photo"* primed me for an average lunch experience at best. Shortly after placing my order, however, I knew I had stumbled upon something truly special. Readers of mine know that I hold onion rings (yes, onion rings) to a high standard. The perfect ring features a shatteringly crisp batter speckled with cracked pepper and onions that teeter between soft/caramelized and crisp/astringent. The large appetizer portion at Hermann Sons came remarkably close to my standard, ranking among the best I've tried in south Texas. They arrived piping hot out of the fryer and accompanied by a cup of what tasted like homemade ranch dressing. If Hermann Sons were to take part in the ongoing chicken sandwich war of 2020-2021, their entry would bury their fast-food counterparts in the first round. The chicken breast was juicy and tender throughout (suggestive of a buttermilk marinade), crispy, and well seasoned. The accompanying tomatoes and lettuce were fresh, and the mound of shredded Jack cheese melted into the crevices of the crust. The toasted sourdough bun tasted freshly baked and held up against the juices of the vegetable components and sheer girth of the chicken. Even the side of fried-to-order dill pickles was a treat. My father and I topped off our lunch with two slices of what was unarguably the best lemon meringue pie we had ever tasted. The well-balanced custard (just a *tad* on the sour side -- perfect) was smooth and tasted of freshly grated lemon zest. The meringue bore no signs of weeping, suggesting that it had been stored properly at room temperature and in a draft-free location. Pie crusts often succumb to moisture, becoming an unappetizing mush on the plate, but this one maintained its integrity and was delicious: flaky and buttery with just a pinch of salt for balance. The desserts, according to the cashier, are not made on the premises but at an undisclosed local bakery. Note to self: locate said bakery! I seldom award five stars after just one experience, but I will make an exception for Hermann Sons. My parents visited on their own recently and raved about the chicken-fried steak and 12-ounce grilled sirloin, suggesting that the kitchen is adroit at myriad things and that the fry cook is indeed a master of the Maillard reaction. From what I gather, the restaurant has remained in the Britsch family for over 70 years, so they must be doing something right. Ignore the hilariously petty complaints here on Yelp ("They were so rude to my friend with blue hair!!!", "The hostess had her mask under her nose!!!", "The busboy dragged chairs in front of the TV!!!") and treat yourself to a taste of local culture. *Seriously, just look at the "featured" photo (as of this writing): partially eaten food plated on Styrofoam (a to-go order?) and photographed vertically instead of horizontally. We decided to take a mini road trip west of San Antonio and came to Hondo and found this lovely spot. Everyone, from the hostess to the wait staff, the bus boy, and cooks were on top of it all-smiling and checking in on us the whole time. The food was great and they have a really good salad bar. So this has ups and downs like no other restaurant we have been to. First, and I hate to admit this, they served us one of the best micheladas we have ever had. You would think with the abundance of Mexican restaurants, a steak house would not make one better. They pulled it off beautifully. The food was mixed for us. The schnitzel was delicious, but the pepper steak was dry and extremely under seasoned. Now, as a Texan I know chicken fried steak is not supposed to most tender food, but this thing was like rubber. The sirloin on the other hand was delicious and cooked perfectly. It's a shame with the inconsistency. We really loved it, and we loved how the management handled an extremely rude older couple that was ruining everyone's dinner with the griping over THEM reading the specials wrong. Never again! Way overrated and way overpriced for what you get. We went for a family get together (much to my chagrin) and I knew what I was up against as I had been there previously...so noisy!!. Couldn't talk to the person two seats down from me. We had a party of 11 people, and they automatically tacked on the 20% gratuity (understandable) but, we're all paying separate checks and I'm not paying 20% on lousy food and lousy service. Not only that, they added another $3.65 "convenience fee". Who's convenience? Surely not mine I pay cash and I just wanted the hell out of there as I was done and I didn't feel like arguing after being there almost 3 hours!!
