Best last minute decision!! I have been to Billy Sushi and have been wanting to go to their "secret" bar below. It was honestly hard to find but some other lovely patrons guided us to this cocktail haven. As soon as you walk in the hostess is super friendly and eager to give great service. Our waiter was also really nice and helpful when he suggested strong vs fruity cocktail options. The only thing that could bother some was that we received the wrong bill and credit card back after paying. Thankfully it was just with the table next to us and I noticed immediately. I would like to give grace because we both had red cards and there was a flooding issue the staff was dealing with. Cocktails: Promiscuous was my favorite and my boyfriends! It was pretty much a pretty pink margarita without the salt rim. The One, Two, Step gave me floral notes with a nice after taste. Side Note: Our reservation was at 11:15pm and we had plenty of time for two cocktails each. These are a bit pricey, for four cocktails plus tip it was $85. I've been here twice now, and I love the vibe! The aesthetic reminds me of some speakeasies in Vegas (like ghost donkey and the library bar), and the drinks are very tasty. A dreamy escape under the stars! BAD is a hidden speakeasy that is best used with a reservation (6 or less is the requirement online) to ensure a comfortable spot is provided. Look for the laser beams in the back alley to direct you towards the back entrance and once inside you will travel down a few stairwells to check in or place you name on the waitlist. Please note that my review is strictly based off of a reservation and the process was very slick. Every server was polished wearing professional clothing and helped the newbies at the table learn about the menu by making recommendations and providing us with some history about the venue. Note: My table got two complimentary desserts because our table ended up getting moved once we sat down which was a generous act right out of the gate. Many of the cocktails are named after 90's R&B songs such as killing me softly and the music is fresh the entire evening. While no dance floor, you may find yourself jamming in the booths. A few of the cocktails are blowtorched to allow the aroma (pine) to distribute amongst the table. This place is truly all for show and works best for a celebration or date. There are small handheld food items such as sushi, rice and gyoza. As mentioned above, loads of cheesecake flavors such as raspberry and peanut butter chocolate and then a soft serve dole whip imitation (pineapple) even a cookies and cream flavor. Talk about nummy! Coolest new bar in North Loop?! My friends and I booked a reservation for 6 about a month out, and so glad that we did. When we arrived, the bar was pretty full and I understand why after having a drink. While the drink menu doesn't say what exactly is in each drink, it tells you a "vibe" or feeling and the servers encourage you to trust your gut when ordering. However, you can always ask if you're unsure of what you'd like. The ambiance is the best part of BAD. 90's and early 2000's R&B and rap is playing at a fun level, but not so loud that you can't have a good conversation with friends. read more

AMBIANCE: They Make this place hella hard to find and get into. It's like Fort Knox. But...that made it all the more fun when we actually got in. Definitely felt speakeasy vibes until you walk in and see a posh underground club vibe. They play hip hop and rap the whole time, which is great, but there's no dance floor, so I ended up wiggling and tapping my foot in the booth the whole time. It's dimly lit, and there are some cool neon signs. The bathrooms have full length foreign movie posters, so that's kind of cool. It definitely feels exclusive. We sat in the main room, which seemed a lot cooler than the back enclave they have so try to sit in view of the bar. FOOD and DRINK: Their menu is cryptic but playful. You can kind of guess what drinks are being served based on the moody descriptions, but it's better just to ask the server if you really want to know what types of drinks you're getting. We got a variety of cocktails that came accompanied by smoke and fire. It truly is a pm experience, but you pay for it. We got the shishito peppers, which were a good little plate to share for three! Not the best cocktails I've ever had but definitely a unique experience. ACCESSIBILITY: In order to make a reservation here, you have to navigate a web page that looks like a scam and click on the link at the bottom that will then take you to a reservation page. I have been to Billy After Dark three times now. The first time was during the soft open, where you had to know someone who had been there before to get in. That was a really fun way to try out a new speakeasy. This most recent time, we noticed some changes, but also that same atmosphere that we loved. I will start with the changes first, and most noticeable, was their menu. When B.A.D. opened, the menus were elevated, simple, and based solely on feeling and vibe. There were no drink descriptions and it was really fun to engage with the wait staff to learn more about what you were feeling vs going with your usual order. The staff were part of the experience. That has gone away a bit, with descriptions of the drinks right on the menu. The second big change we noticed, and maybe not so much a change but a weird vibe, was the amount of flame they use to scorch their garnishes. I totally get sorching a garnish for a specific smell and adding a smoky taste to the drink, but for some of the drinks, it just seems like a show with no actual enhancement of the beverage. It was just a little weird, as we didn't remember that being such a huge part last time. I feel like it is how they are engaging the wait staff since their changes to the menu. Some of the positives, and the pieces that will keep me going back, is the atmosphere. The lighting, the music, and the journey to the speakeasy is just fun. Its not annoying or in your face, and its something we comment on every time. Another great piece, and change, is the addition of food. Understandably, they didn't have food during their soft opening, but with food coming from Billy Sushi, its such a great first stop for a night out. It would also be a great ending spot to fill up on some great veggie and fish apps. My favorite had to be the avocado tempura, it was something I was in the mood for and it didn't disappoint. Some of the drinks had changed since the last time we were there, but that was nice and refreshing. I hope they continue to change the menu on a regular cadence to try new things. Each time, we have gone as a party of five, and they are more than capable of tabling parties of different sizes. If you haven't been here before, google/ Apple Maps will take you to Billy's sushi (same owner).The speak easy / restaurant share the same address but you cannot enter through the restaurant. It was easy to find once we got directions from the front desk! We didn't have reservations & were still able to get in right away however I'd still recommend making some as there seemed to be a constant flow of people in and out. (if you can figure out how! - the website is a little tricky) This place is perfect for date night or a night out with friends. The cocktails are inspired by 90s/,2000s hip hop & r&b songs with music playing to match. Loved the suspense of the menu being a list of songs instead of the cocktail description so you don't know what you get until you get it! If you are picky they do give you details on the drinks & can also make cocktails of your choice that aren't on the menu. Perfect selection of finger foods such as sashimi, hand rolls, bao buns & gyoza. We got the tempura avocado and crispy rice. Both delicious. Stopped by the B.A.D. Speakeasy for a few drinks before dinner. If you can find out how to get in, you will be ushered down a set of stairs, and step into the Rolls-Royce of cocktail bars. From the decor to the 90's-2000's hip hop in the speakers, the vibes at Billy After Dark are hard to beat. The philosophy here is to step outside of your comfort zone. With no descriptions of what spirits are used in each cocktail, you just need to go with your gut and choose what speaks to you based on the hip-hop/R&B references on the menu. BAD was GOOD! Billy's after dark has been talked about so much and I've seen the bird drink all over social media. I did not expect BAD to be as good as it was! I'm not sure who I can speak to about this situation about the server that helped us, but she had medium curly hair and a septum piercing. Everything was going great until we asked if we can split the bill 6 ways and she started to get an attitude with us. If she didn't know how to work the register, is new, or just simply didn't want to she could have just say sorry and if she can only take one card and we'll be more than happy to just use one card, but instead she went kekeing with another worker, blaming us for her nasty attitude. I've been checking out B.A.D. since it opened and, in the past 6 months or so, it's started to dip a bit. When it opened the service was top notch, with bartenders rotating who was a server and who was a bartender. The drinks use classic hip-hop names to inspire what's in them. The menus and service felt like you were in a fancy spot. Now the menus are cheap and laminated, they've switched to having non-bartender staff who feel less trained and knowledgeable about the drinks, and it feels like B.A.D. has passed a bit of its prime -- the clientele is clearly not the same. Another major sign that things changed? The *hilarious* "Fake" website they used (a variant of "freemoney" where you had to click through 2 pages of highly suspicious links to get to the reservation page) was replaced by a totally generic website reservation site. The old site semi-exists, but they removed the second click. This all screams "we're losing customers." When BAD opened they seemed to make it harder to find online because they wanted to offer spots folks who went to Billy's Sushi (above) a chance to sit down there. I'm not shocked that didn't work because, almost every time I went to BAD, I'd see them bring down old suburbanite couples who were fans of Wayzata's Sushi Fix that are simply not able to appreciate what BAD originally was. BAD is not aimed at the Wayzata crowd who thought Sushi Fix was trendy dining, LOL. When Enkhbileg "Billy" Tserenbat sold Sushi Fix (though sense he lost control of it) he wanted to step it up, and found the investment for this place. Originally, it had major problems -- I learned the best way to address the food part of the menu was to simply ask "what do you actually have" because they often didn't have half of the listed items. The interior of the space is still one of the best decors of a basement I've seen in the metro, whoever they paid a lot deserved every penny. B.A.D. is now a safe bar to take your suburban friends who find the idea of going into downtown Minneapolis adventurous. read more

Smaller menu here than Billy's sushi, mainly small bites and finger food but the crispy rice and fries avocado was really good. Of the four drink tried, 3 of them were really good. There wasn't anything on their end that made the 4 one bad, it was just a more alcohol forward cocktail. I had a friend in town for a work thing that we were both attending, and it was her 50th birthday. I wanted to do something special for her since she was away from home, and so after the group work dinner with everyone, I nabbed her and a couple of her pals and brought her here. I made a reservation, and was greeted at the door and seated promptly. The one bummer of the whole thing was I indicated on the reservation that it was a special occasion. And when we arrived our server asked what brought us in, and I said it was my friend's birthday and his reply was "everyday is someone's birthday" aka "big deal, I don't care" which sort of was a bummer. If you don't care if its an occasion, don't ask when I'm making the reservation and don't ask when I arrive. Other than that our server was great, though we did sit with empty drinks for a while before he came back to us and it was earlier in the night, so not very busy. The drinks themselves were very good, not the best I ever had, but solid. There was some show when they arrived, which was fun. They had a nice NA option for me as I only wanted one cocktail as I was driving. The vibe of the space is fun, I really liked it overall. I'm interested in going back again for another occasion. Our reservation was at 8:15 and at 8:55 after reviving only one drink and speaking to our waiter ONCE we we told to vacate the table by the host because they needed it. I was really disappointed with the service when typically they are awesome. Like since when was a reservation 40 minutes!?!? We're unable to order another drink or any food. I am extremely dissatisfied and didn't want to believe the horror stories but will probably not be returning and need to fund new date night spot. Great atmosphere and even better cocktails! Went on a Wednesday night and was still fairly busy (make sure to make a reservation). They had a large selection of cocktails, all having a Japanese theme to them. They also had a smaller selection of food. We ordered the Crispy Rice and Popcorn Shrimp, both were absolutely delicious!
