Before another bakery opened nearer my house Bijou was my favourite Dublin 6 place for bread. Laziness aside though its a great little shop. Formerly cuisine de France and now owned by the Bijou restaurant next door. Nice to see they haven't changed the place that much, save for a new logo. As well as doing a thriving lunch time trade in filled baguettes they aslo do great breads, cakes, deserts and pastries. The place is small though so expect a queue. read more

Came here today with a group including my two small children for brunch. Everything was delicious, I had order envy when I saw the eggs benedict and the vegetarian breakfast. However my own order was delicious - blueberry brioche bake with pecans, maple syrup and proper crispy bacon, think bread and butter pudding but not gross and gloopy, in fact nice and doughy and delicious. I was slightly dissappointed with the kids order as I specifically asked what sort of pancakes they were and was told the smaller American style and what actually came out were a thick crepe - think traditional Irish mammy pancakes and the kids hated them, they had toast and sausages! Good bye New Year's Resolutions!! Hello Bijou!!! The first time I went into this deli was a few year ago, when it was under a different name. At that time the brownie I bought was so good, that my friend and I stopped back in on the way home from our walk (yes we were trying to be healthy! ha!) and bought some more pastries to bring home. The name has now changed, but the goods they offer are still absolutely delicious and just thinking about them now is making my mouth water! When I popped in again today, they did something that I didn't think was possible, they got better, they added more cakes and pastries. YUM. We went here for brunch on Sunday and was really impressed with both the food and the price. Portions are large and the menu had loads to choose from. I got the blueberry and bacon brioche and was really impressed. My partner had the eggs benedict and she loved it as well (she also got two on her plate, which some places might not do!) We stayed after for a prosseco cocktail and it was absolutely amazing! Bijou, meaning trinket or something along those lines in French, if I'm not mistaken, is such an apt name for this sumptuous deli. Having been to it's big brother, the restaurant, a few times before I was incredibly keen to try the deli. To say it's a diamond in the rough (see what I did there) is a bit of a cop out given the voluminous number of eateries in the Rathgar/Terenure area, not to mention Rathmines but I'm entirely sure that no deli in those surrounding areas, or Dublin for that matter can match Bijou deli, it's a real gem. Walking through the door into the quant space you're greeted by the warm aroma of freshly baked rolls, breads, cakes, muffins... I could go on. The options available at the salad bar are vast and the quality of the produce is superb, especially when compared to some delis.... Whether you're grabbing a quick sandwich for lunch, or you want to get some stuff to go, the Bijou Deli has a massive selection. While I LOVE my pastries and treats of that nature, the zenith of the experience is their chicken tike, you won't be disappointed. The coffee is great too, it doesn't taste like the usual cheap stuff you can be served up which tastes rather like the server has gone out the back, dug up a clump of earth, rammed it into a cup and loaded it with hot water. While it may be a little more upmarket in terms of the price it's so worth it and in my opinion is still quite reasonable. The staff are always really chipper and hospitable. One of the most satisfying things about this deli though, is the fact it is always buzzing with customers, a true statement of how good it really is. I booked a table at Bijou for my wife's birthday for several reasons foremost of which were that it is local to us and the menu appealed to us. Unfortunately we left after our meal feeling extremely let down. First off when we arrived, we were brought to our table which was right beside the kitchen so we were asked to move and the Maitre D was more than happy to accommodate us with another table. What I did find condescending was that later during the meal as if to plamás us, the Maitre D asked us if we liked our new table and it was the best in the house - while it was plainly obvious it was not. This may seem quite petty I know but it is something that irked me. The food itself was only ok. I don't think it matched up to the money we paid for it. The portions were just a bit too small and while it tasted fine, that was about it...it was fine. I won't remember the place for the food as opposed to other restaurants where the food blew my socks off. It will be a while before I go back, if at all. read more

This is my one stop shop for coffee, lunch and snacks in Rathgar. I have only been into the cafe on the corner and not the bistro, but if the deli food is anything to go by I say the bistro is better. at lunch they have a great selection of salad boxes for 5EUR - you get to choose 4 salads and they are very generous - also filling. The chicken salad with grapes is my absolute favourite!! They also have lasagne and quiches...etc. Their rolls are so fresh and crispy and sometimes warm just out of the oven.. The coffee is yum and they have a couple selections of Gluten free treats along with pastries and cakes to have. Love this place... though my bank account does not! :P read more

Had originally booked brunch for 6 people with 3 buggies for Mother's Day. A couple cancelled 1hr before the arranged time. When we got there we informed the Maitre D who replied with "You'd want to see the amount of people we turned away today". He gave us our seats which were in a nice location and right beside a table for maybe 8 people which was unoccupied for the duration of our visit. And here's me thinking it was mad busy and they were turning people away?! When we asked the hostess for the brunch menu, she grumpily nodded and no menus came. We asked a waitress then for the menus who could not have been more helpful. In fact, all the waiting staff were great, it was just their grumpy bosses we had an issue with. We were shocked at how rude they were. Food was great but the welcome gave us a bad taste in our mouths. Will not be going back. read more

First and last time I will ever darken the door of this alleged restaurant. We were welcomed by a lovely gentleman who brought us to a table by the window and even removed a chair so my son could sit at the table in his wheelchair. He asked what we wanted and I remarked I wanted to get breakfast. He politely stated they only did a lunch menu. He said he would ask if the chef could do some eggs and bacon and toast. I told him that would be nice but I was thinking about getting their French toast with bacon from the menu. We sat alone, the only customers in the restaurant at the opposite end to where the server was enquiring with chef. In fairness to the server he was very helpful and I can only assume trying to make a case on my behalf to ask for a basic all be it off menu request, all the items did feature on the menu but just not together as an item. It was at this point I overheard the chef clearly getting agitated saying to the server "let them go to a cafe". Considering I didn't actually ask them to make special arrangements but rather was offered this by the helpful server I was less than pleased to hear that in an empty restaurant on a Wednesday morning not only was it to much to ask but it was clearly an affront to some chef who thinks far too much of himself. Upon hearing this from the so called chef I promptly stood up and shouted down the empty restaurant to inform the staff that I had no problem taking my business elsewhere and we made our way out the door. As we were leaving I heard the chef let off one of those scoff laughs as if we were the ones being difficult. As we left we passed a gentleman I can only hope was the owner arriving just in time to see some very dissatisfied potential customers walk out the door never to return and spend money in his establishment. I couldn't even tell you if their food so much as smelled good or visit was that brief. If I could have given a negative star rating I would have done but it doesn't appear to be an option. read more

I have visited the Bijou twice. The first time was a jam-packed dinner affair with no reservation. We had to wait several minutes to be seated upstairs. I was slightly disappointed by this as the atmosphere and the decor were both quite bland in comparison to the warm, bustling energy downstairs, but I kept it to myself. We were in time for the early bird -two courses for €19.95- but I was more enticed by a rosted pork belly on the al la carte, which came served with potato rosti, apple tweel and jus, for the same price as two early bird courses. The food arrived in good time, but I was immediately struck by how small the portion was. It tasted great; the pork was so tender and the crackling was perfect, but I still felt quite hungry afterwards. I was hoping dessert would fill the gap. I ordered the Sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch ice cream. To be quite honest, it tasted exactly like one of those microwavable sponge puds you might get in Mark's and Spencer's. In other words alright, but not what I was expecting for €6.50. The second time was for lunch. I was pleased to be able to sit downstairs on this occassion, which struck a more luxuriant tone with its ornate metal detailing and paintings of glamorously dressed women. Swing and lounge jazz were the vibe of the day. We were seated on the left hand side of the bar as you walk in. I couldn't help noticing the cavalcade of buggies parked under the stairs, with a group of mums sitting opposite. As more buggies started to be wheeled in, it struck me that this was probably a weekly, if not daily, routine for these women and I reluctantly prepared myself for a squeal-a-thon. Thankfully none of the sprogs kicked off and so it remained a peaceful experience. I had the burger with fries, which came to me served on a black stone rectangle, in a bap that was far too small to contain the meat, with the butt of a gerkin standing curiously on its end. I'm all for chefs exploring food as a means of self-expression, but pointless deconstruction like this is just annoying, especially since it meant I had to slice the gerkin myself. Aside from being messy, it was a decent burger, but it wasn't worth €14.95. My friend had the beer battered fish and chips, with no complaints other than the cost. To conclude, the service was good and the atmosphere was nice, but ultimately I find the prices too high and the portions too small to warrant another visit myself. read more

Discovered this place for a brunch last Sunday. Instead of my normal jaunt into Ranelagh I came in this direction after finding online. Managed to book a table an hour before hand so this was my first concern. No where that is good can you book a table for brunch! Always too busy! Bijou itself is a really nicely decorated and elegant place in the heart of Rathgar. With my slight hungover from the night before I felt that perhaps it was a little too posh for me, but hey a girl has got to eat. Great selection of food on the menu and I was a little stumped as what to go for but decided on the Bijou dog. And wow, what a thing. The waiter brought it over and we all stared at the plate and then at each other. And then at the plate again. HUGE! Is the only way it can be described. Like at least a foot long. Soft doughy bread, stuffed with two toulouse sausages, topped with caramelised onions and mushrooms with a delightfully tasty relish. And a portion of fries on the side. This was going to be an eating task ahead. Everything was so tasty. The spices and herbs in the sausage, the tang of the relish and the softness of the onions and mushrooms. Such a delight. And I'm sad to say I couldn't finish it all. I tried...... Only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is that I felt the service was not 100%. As soon as we sat down we were jumped on every couple of minutes by different waiters asking us if we wanted to order, but then when we did order it seemed to take an age to get to us. I'm sure it was nearly 30 minutes by the time we got two hot dogs and a bacon sarnie. I know food is cooked fresh but this still seemed like a long time. I will be back to take on the dog again. Bijou first opened in 1998 the restaurant has two floor which offers lots of dining space. On the ground floor there is the casual dining area and on the first floor there is a restaurant, bar and smoking terrace. The Cuisine in Bijou is French Bistro. I think this is a great restaurant to go too. It is a bit away from the centre of Dublin but I say it is worth the trip. I recommend the cafe bistro area of the restaurant although you cannot book this area, if you have to wait you can go to their cocktail bar which is loacted upstairs. When I went their I had good old bangers and mash that was delicious. To finish I just had to try the chocolate fudge cake....needless to say it was to die for. I would also sat the restaurant is very reasonable priced. read more

So 4 of us fetched up at 6 pm on a damp Friday night for the early bi d special. At €24.95 for 2 courses it's a steal. I ordered mussels for starter and while the sauce was a little on the bland side, there were plenty of mussels for a starter portion and the warm bread on the side was divine although I could easily have used more, a lot more, to mop up the sauce. This is more a positive reflection on the bread rather than the sauce in fairness. My main was trout with chunky fries with which I could find no fault whatsoever. We had a bottle of forgettable Pinot Grigio (forgettable in the sense I forgot to take note of what it was) to wash it all down. Service was friendly and brisk, perhaps too brisk in that our starters appeared within milliseconds of ordering and mains were equally speedy in arriving, I would have preferred a more leisurely pace but I suspect they were anxious to clear the joint before the 'proper' dinner crowd arrived. I've been here a good few times for brunch and it is amazing! Eggs benedict is perfect! The full Irish breakfast is to die for. The pancakes with crispy bacon and maple syrup is heaven! Couldn't recommend enough. I love it when the menu says crispy bacon and you actually get CRISPY bacon, too often in Dublin you get crap fatty greasy bacon that is just not appetising at all! I'd go back for the bacon alone! For groups you'd probably need a reservation as it gets busy enough. The only bad thing was the orange juice is extremely pulpy, which isn't to my taste but some people love that! :) read more

I've just bought a chocolate muffin from this place, so I had the idea, why not tell people about it? This place is a small little bakery on the corner of Highfield Road and Orwell Road. It is charming on the outside, with a blue and white canopy over the door. In front window you can see the display of fresh bread and pastries. It is small inside, but filled with lots of nice things. My famiy regularly buy pastries here e.g. croissants, danishes, muffins etc. These are delicious. My chocolate muffin today was creamy chocolatey, with large chocolate chips. There are also big fancy cakes as well as brownies and cookies. They sell some ready made meals which could be handy if you're coming home from work and you're hungry but don't feel like cooking. You can get rolls or sandwiches made up here to your liking too. It's worth a visit. We tend to go on Saturday mornings, although it can be busy. As the shop is small the queue stretches out the shop onto the path, which shows you how popular it is! read more

I haven't had much here, but the doughnuts, coffee and quiches are really very good. Plus this place is always packed, which maybe why I don't stop in often. When I get a craving I want instant gratification, not to wait in line so my sensible brain can talk me out of what ever fatty yumminess my stomach absolutely MUST HAVE!!!!! However, the few things I have had from here were so good, my head is starting to be outweighed and my tummy desires win. I have not eaten here but wanted to buy a gift voucher for a friend who loves this place and lives locally. I rang, a few days before Christmas to pay for the voucher by phone, and explained that I was also sending flower from the nearby Flower Bowl Florist. The guy I spoke to was very friendly and efficient and very happy to drop the voucher to the florists to be delivered with the flowers. All this during what sounded like a very busy lunch service in the background and plenty of snow on the ground. Voucher was dropped to florist 20 minutes later! Fab service. Quite a tasteful room, reasonable food, but the service is appalling. Servers here are actually 'Runners' and merely drop the food and give no attention to their diners. Worse still they hover at the Line - out of even partial view of the diners and so cannot even be beckoned if you need anything. The Manageress on duty apologised to no less than three parties - ours included - at the time said parties were leaving. Why would you prepare reasonable food, have a nice room and offer dreadful service...........really boggles the mind! read more

I went here for coffee and a pastry a few days ago.. Both were fine. However after I'd ordered and paid, the woman who had taken my payment went back to preparing some deli salad stuff. She'd just handled my money and then went back to peeling and chopping a cucumber without washing her hands. Well I went here with my family for a meal as we were celebrating my parents wedding anniversary. Let down by service is an understatement, there was six of us for the dinner which lasted 3 and half hours on a late Sunday afternoon. The starters came out immediately but we didnt see our main meal for another hour and half. We wolfed down our food at this stage as we were all starving, Still very hungry (portion sizes are very small) we ordered a desert which was a terrible mistake which meant we had to wait a further hour for. We wanted to cancel our deserts as it was taking so long but they said they were bringing them out. We ate the deserts and requested the bill at the same time. Throughout the course of our meal I had told the waitress we had been waiting considerable amount time but didn't do anything about it. I would not advise this place for a small group or if you are very hungry. I cant see myself going back here unless new managers in the restaurant and bigger portions. read more

This place is always very busy. Therefore they clearly don't feel any need to be particularly pleasant to customers. The staff are not exactly impolite, but a fair description would be brusque. The queueing system is clumsy, with no particular order or logic in evidence. They do very average coffee, but good almond moon squares, which are gluton-free. I used to go purely for the delicious single portion round quiches, which at €3.95 were great for a meal with salad at home. However, these were clearly too time-heavy, profit-light for Bijou, so they now only do the big, solid, bland, tasteless quiches that you get everywhere, and sell these by the slice etc. There was a shrugged response when I tried to engage the floor manager on the topic. We went for early bird on a Wednesday. Food was delicious. Service was very attentive (all staff who passed our table seemed interested in making sure everthing was alright).
