The Big Y chain just moved into Eastern MA (North Shore of Boston). Their prices are no better than Hannaford's were and more than MarketBasket.. The produce is overpriced. I comparison shopped all the items I buy at MarketBasket and they were all higher at the Big Y. I tried "Just like Mom's" cole slaw and potato salad. If my mom ever made cole slaw and potato salad like that I would have run away from home! They were mush with way too much mayo. read more

Sales are excellent, double coupons are nice, non-sale items a bit on the higher side.

I wasn't a fan of the Big Y at first but I've come to realize that this place kicks the crap out of Stop and Shop and Shaws. The quality of the people they hire is enough to make you shop here (Walpole). Great buy 1 get 2 free deals and the deli and meat depts are first class. They seek you out instead of the opposite. read more

Nice Place But Pricy a Bit,you Can go to Walmart and buy the same stuff for less $$$.

Great place to shop. Doesn't have everything but that can be good. It does have great produce and fish and meat sections.

Having just moved to the area recently, I have have looked around for a new supermarket to go to. We settled on the Big Y because it was the nicest looking store. It is clean and enormous. Depending on which entrance you use, it feels like you have visited different stores because the departments all have their own space (bakery, produce, prepared foods, flower shop, etc.). While there are some things that I don't like too much, I do think that this is the nicest place to do grocery shopping in the area. read more

Best super market in the area. They have a huge selection of a lot of hard-to-find products, gourmet foods, produce, deli and prepared foods. The prices are very reasonable too! read more

awesome supermarket. They have lots of food and fresh fruits. There is a little cafe where you can eat or have coffee. They have fresh mozzarella and onions and olives, cold cuts, a place to have pizza and chicken wings. Among the many great things there, there is a place where you can order fish and chips, lobster rolls, and other sea related things. Anna is right, as usual, its probably the best supermarket in the area. read more

The Big Y in Walpole is fantastic. It has great prices and selection, but best part is the quality of the products. The meat, fish, and produce is fantastic. So you pay the same price or less that you would at the cheapest store, but you get a far better product. Also, the employees are very nice and knowledgeable. I actually drive about 20 miles to go there, and it is totally worth it. read more

so sad that the Bakery just told me that they only make Princess and race car cakes :( Glad there are other food stores in the area to make a farm theme cake for our program! read more

Big Y in Walpole, in my opinion, has the WORST customer service I've experienced in this town. The workers I talked to, in my experiences going (which has been a countless amount of times), has been horrible, with adults talking down to me as if I was wasting their time. Especially in the food department, the employees made minimal eye contact, lacked enthusiasm and attention when speaking with them. My unpleasant experiences have made me most certainly NOT want to go back and spend any money. I do not know if it just because I am a more "younger" customer, but their treatment is, in my opinion, unacceptable. read more

Its a great place to go but....the prices are ridiculously high 5 dollars for a little piece of candy? i think not....just go to Walmart..... read more

Got my kid's birthday cake and pizza at Big Y. Of course, the service was great, pricing was excellent and taste was off the charts.

I live in Boston and drive down to Walpole each week to do my shopping at Big Y. The store is clean, the prices are good, the selection is above average. I'm a sucker for buy-one-get-one-free. I shop every Sunday evening and the place is almost empty. Perfect for someone like me who doesn't like crowds or children. read more

This place is NOT just a supermarket. They have everything a normal supermarket does and more. A pharmacy (that only SOME supermarkets have), a "Little Y, Kids Club", that is definitely the reason some people shop here (where kids can go...), and Big Y Pizzeria, to order fresh made, delicious pizzas, which most other supermarkets DO NOT have. The prices are not high, yet they have lots of "Buy One, Get One" deals. Some items may be a bit higher, yet the service and employees are all very friendly and they have their own, different types of rewards. At checkout, there is a screen to play "The Game" to win Silver / Gold Coins, for special rewards on items. Normally they will have items on sale, which you can get a rewards card for free to get the deals, and if you have Silver / Gold coins, there are EXTRA savings, and sometimes you can items for very, very little or free! They do offer good cravings. Even though this store is AMAZING, the Walpole Stop&Shop is also amazing (and I know the employees and is closer, so I go there more often). So overall, great supermarket. Highly suggested. Conveniently located on Route 1, near the Sharon town line, by the Route 27 intersection in Walpole. read more

Big Y is fun! I like to save money and try to go once a month to stock up on Full Circle organic cereal (less than half the price than my local grocery store) and frozen veggies. They often have a buy one get two free sale and if you shop with a friend it can mean a huge savings. The store made hermits are crazy good and very cheap. It is the Circus Circus of grocery shopping. It is a long drive for me, but I think I save enough to make it worthwhile. At the bottom of your receipt it tells you how much you saved. I just shopped for a holiday party and saved 37% on cheese and crackers with BOGO and coupons. I am such a nerd. read more

The best value for suprmarkets in the area! Let me say that again...Big Y is the best value in supermarkets in the area!!! I love a sale and Big Y has the best sales on a week to week basis than anyone. It's not just price because without the quality and selection there would be no value. They have all the specialty shops--bakery, prepared meals, deli, butcher and International selections as the fancy- schmantzy stores with the high prices. There is also the aisle after aisle (big store) of standard grocery items. If you live in the area or are just passing thorugh, give it a try. Be warned though...it is addictive and you may get hooked! read more

It's my favorite supermarket in the area. As Stan M. says - the quality of the people they hire is enough to make you shop here! (Walpole). There is little turn over and you see the same friendly, helpful people week after week. When you shop on the sale cycle, you get the best pricing too! Good organic and local grown produce selections..and it keeps growing. read more

Their fish department often doesn't have sales items...so if you see a great price on anything advertised it's only 50/50, at best, it will be available in the store. read more

Great Supermarket. I love their store specials and the coin specials. Shopping there is fun. Some prices are a bit higher than in other supermarkets, but as previous raters wrote, there are some foods that are not found in other spots, at least not close to where I live. I love the international section - it has much bigger selection on some items. Star Market used to be like that. :) read more

The Fried Seafood is a big rip off! You get what you pay for which isn't much! I got a seafood platter there recently and it was more fries than anything and the fish was not very fresh! read more

last weekend was the end terrible service high prices and after i pay twice as much for steak as any other store they want me to pay for the paper bags your kidding you left wing wing nuts got rid of the paper bags to save the trees now at 12 cents abag the hell with the trees cant wait to see big y on the endangered list read more

I get agitated whenever I shop at big y(did I step foot in here)!!! The coin gimmick is insulting to me and just a hassle. THE manager examines your coupons like she is doing a lobotomy. An item was displayed for 1 cent off! I would rather deal with Joseph Stalin, than deal with the people who work here! If you love aggravation, than you can always get it there!!! read more

Clean, well-ordered store in a convenient location. But I prefer to do my grocery shopping at a store that respects my privacy and allows me to enjoy sale pricing with no strings attached (i.e. the Big Y card). I'm sure I will stop in for an item or two every now and then, but Market Basket will now get the bulk of my grocery shopping business. So sorry to see Hannaford go! read more

I would agree that the grocery store is fine. I would not say the same thing about the pharmacy. A few weeks ago, I received a call from the pharmacy saying that they had given me 15 too many [controlled medication] pills. Since I never count pills (I trust pharmacists - not any more), I trusted them and returned 15 pills. The appreciative response was barely above rude, but, oh well. I should have insisted on a receipt. If anybody else is ever in this situation, be sure you get a receipt. So today I try to fill it [controlled medication] again. I was told I was two days too early, something that has never happened before. Upon thinking about it, I asked the lady if it was possible they had undercounted the pills. "Oh, no". "Not possible". Hmmm. If it's not only possible, but true, that they overcounted the pills, is it not possible that they could have undercounted the pills? "Oh, no". This time, the response was way beyond rude. I requested my original prescription back and will be "hiring" back Shaw's Osco in Medfield, a great place, particularly "Moji". I only left due to it being quite far from us, but I guess I can drive for great service. I recommend everyone use Moji, he is a great guy. In the meantime, I will be looking into filing a complaint to regulatory agencies. read more

I primarily come to the Big Y for the cooked food etc. but i have shopped at it for groceries and i have to say the prices are low!! but anyways i usually come to the big y during lunch due to working literally down the street. The any footlong grinders(subs) are a good grab for the price. I usually go for the footlong turkey on wheat since i've have had dry roast beef the last two times, but it definitely beats the subshop chain subways. They pack your sub with alot of veggies(to what you like) and good amount of meat depending on the sub server (try to avoid like the old lady(manager i think?!?!?) she skimps out on alot) The sub really fills you up. They also have a fresh seafood department, where they can fry some seafood on the spot. Beer battered fish and fries..mmhmm.. really good. The haddock n' chip is my preference, the fish is crispy and moist all the time and the fries are never undercooked/soggy. They also offer fried shrimp etc. If you try for the fried chicken, i suggest going when they come straight out of the frier...they keep them on the heater table..and it eventually gets soggy....ugh...The pizza + calzones are not bad for a quick grab at a nice cheap deal. read more

This is a great food market. The weekly specials and the coin and coupon rewards do save you money. The quality is excellent. I would have given another star but find, although there is an ethnic section, other than Hebrew National and Nathan hot dogs, there is little for the Jewish taste buds and I know the Jewish population has grown in the area. I do travel a distance to this market because it's worth it for all the specials and stock up items. read more

another bad experience at big y. Their food is fine and their prices are fair. Now if they could just learn how to label their sale items things would be a lot easier. Always have to check the prices as they ring up to avoid being over charged. This happens constantly to me and others I have spoken to. Misleading due to very poor stacking of the shelves with sale tags where they don't belong. Wear your reading glasses as print is so small on tags it's almost impossible to read . Forget the gold coins, the phone apps, and click 2 thing . Make things clear and correct for the shoppers. read more

The reason I shop here is because they sell Smart Chicken. Smart Chicken is the only brand to be both certified humane AND certified organic. As a matter of fact, I notice they sell many certified humane products. That's my main reason and I'm really happy to have found Big Y. read more

I have shopped at the Big Y for over five years but I have finally had enough. Over the years I have run into pricing issues and I have dealt with them because the store was close to my business. I finally had enough last week. I went to the store to buy potatoes for a salad I was making. In the produce section they hade 5lb bags of potatoes 2 for 5 dollars and some with a price of 99 cents. I grabbed 5 bags at 99 cents and went to the register. They rang in at 2.99 so I told them they were 99 cents. A clerk went to the produce section and came back in agreement with me "potatoes 99 cents". A manager came over and called the produce section asking about the pricing issue. She was told the price is 2.99 even if the sign said 99 cents because he was out back looking for a 2 to add to the sign. Why is it my problem If some else messed up?The issue here is not the difference in price but the attitude of their response. It was as if I did something wrong and if I wanted some other potatoes I could return these potatoes and get others. They mess up and they want me to run around the store? I don't think so. I'm in the food business and if one of my employees did nothing to help a customer there would be a problem. This store is not busy enough to have this attitude. I have moved my store's business to other markets, (We spend $6000 per year at the big Y) and now my employees are now shopping elsewhere. All this because of an attitude and a missing 2. My message is- watch you pricing and don't look for help. read more
