I saw they fry fish, scallop. I ordered a scallop dinner with the sea scallops for 18.99 vs the bay scallops for 15.99. I wasn't impressed with size of sea scallops and looked like bay scallops size. Dinner came with fries , Cole slaw. Fries too many , scallops not enough. Cole slaw was pre pack. Scallops were small size, not as many expected and bland batter taste. Fries nice fry crunch and too many... feed 1/2 to my birds in yard. Came with Kens tartar sauce and only two ketchup packets... no salt or pepper packets . I work down the street and have gone in here a few times and always disappointed. Needed the service desk, and there was no staff to work it. They didn't even have someone who could pop into the service desk to help customers on a sporadic basis. I asked an employee if there was someone who could help me, and he could only say "we hopefully will later today... but I don't know when." So I had to go to another store. Yesterday I went to get lunch and got a sandwich, some chips and I figured I'd grab a pack of their chocolate chip cookies, baked in store, for me and my coworkers. I bit into a cookie and for a second thought there was coconut in it... there was a dirty piece of wax paper baked into the middle of it (see photo). Glad I spent $6 on those. Next time I need lunch I'll go to GOOD FOOD DELI across the parking lot. I'll spend the same money and the sandwiches and cookies are better. read more

Due to recent renovations, service,price increases and lack of variety and choice I will not be returning. Even the employees I spoke with are embarrassed. Their new emphasis is on prepared foods and high profits. If you live on a frozen food and prepared diet it's great. The lack of fresh produce is appalling! I could not find half of the items on my list that were always in stock before. I continued to shop there during the renovation hoping things would only get better but I'm done! I go to most pay big wine markets, at least once a week before their subs except for the other night, we get a large Italian, and had very little meat in it. It's last kind of disappointed. But typically we get their large tuna, soft with provolone tomatoes and pickles and it's amazing. It feels you write up a large sub usually feeds the two of us for two days cause they're so big. Everyone is always so friendly and accommodating about choices that we would like they make some right up while you wait they're very reasonable if you have the app there's always a coupon every single week. Big Y is a grocery chain that can be found in both MA and in CT. As other grocery stories, they have a bakery, a produce section, seafood and meat department, etc. We stopped here a couple of times to pick up some breakfast items, such as bananas, fruit, and yogurt. While the grocery is clean and organized, it was a little odd that there were random empty shelves in some of the aisles. I also found it pretty weird that they had an oil/vinegar aisle, but no vinegar for sale - period! I started going when I found they sold Lyman Orchards pies. They're the best grocery store pies around. I like them better than Whole Foods'. Then I discovered their donuts, which are as good as any donut shop. Unfortunately the coffee at the bakery is weak and bitter. The rest of the stuff is fine. Prices are good. I use the self checkout, and there's always somebody there to take care of problems. read more

I visited Big Y on Broad street Meriden this morning, I needed a turkey breast and other things. I was told that the $7 off coupon I was given on my last visit don't apply to the turkey breast, so I picked up a full turkey instead. The check out lady said this is a digital coupon and I should have checked it online I asked her what I could do now? She said pay the extra $7 dollars, I am a senior and and don't go online often I asked to speak to a supervisor, she said that won't help. I left the store leaving everything there. I have been going to Big Y in Meriden since they opened. Although one incidence like this wont change things I think Big Y treatment of seniors need to change for the better read more

Now usually when I go to this Big Y I love it , I love a lot of the big Y's around . Now at this location the brownies are delicious, but the hot wing section and cooked food is awful . The wings& , the cheesesteak egg-rolls were dry and awful , I'm usually a big Y food fan but this location needs to put a little more love into their food . So so: They have a decent selection of goods, but seem to stock more generic, or poorer quality brands than other supermarkets, especially health and hygiene products. So so: Baked goods not great. Minus: I stopped buying produce there. Look in the onion bin especially. Half of them are rotting, or already rotten. Bananas last about 2 days if your lucky. Big minus: Bought expensive Lindt chocolates, opened the box, and they had turned white, and were half melted. This review isn't about the Walpole Big Y but the corporate Customer Service dept. Up until this week I have done most of our food shopping at Big Y since it opened here in Walpole, Ma. Unfortunately the 3 star rating is a downgrade from the what would have been 4 or 5. The problem I have is the this week (4/25/22) when the online site was changed drastically. Before the change it was possible to click the weekly ad (page by page) select the items you want to add to your shopping list, get digital coupons and promotional coupons also added. Printing my weekly shopping list was easy with the print icon. That all changed on Monday when I tried to create my shopping list. First, only the first ad page shows (none of others can be found). Second, clicking on a product does NOTHING. It doesn't get added to my list. Third, digital coupons can't be found with this new designed web page. Fourth, promotional coupons also don't get added to my shopping as in the past. The worst and most annoying feature is the Customer Service call center! I first send an email on Monday and no response within the 2 days. Calls made: Wednesday 1, Thursday 1, Friday 2. Each call was picked up quickly and the 9 selection list given. I choose option 9 as I wanted to speak to someone concerning my list of 4 problems listed above. I was put on hold with each call. After approximately 1 minute the voice/AI (?) states: 'All reps are currently busy with other customers and to leave my name, phone # and my message'. So far I have left 4 messages to call me back. It is now day 6 with neither an email reply nor any returned calls. This is beyond bad gone into lousy customer service. What is Big Y afraid of that they can't even return a call? Are there only 2 phone reps (the recorded message is either a man or woman voice and both sound young)? I'm hoping this gets the attention of Mr. Malloney CEO, Mr. Donald D'Amour Chairperson, Mr Charles D'Amour President and/or Claire D'Amour-Daley VP and the issues noted are addressed quickly, especially my requested return phone call. If I have to I will repeat this litany of failures in letters to each corporate official above. read more

Purchased chicken today, got home and without opening package it smelled rancid. Had to drive back. Saw the meat person and told him. He said mustn't be the chicken the shelves needed to be cleaned. That means that when some of us (i.e. ME) have ONE ITEM, we do not want to stand in one of the three lanes that are open (3??) behind people who look like they have not shopped since Thanksgiving and are doing their Christmas shopping now. I complain to anyone who will listen about how bad Big-Y is, in general but particularly this store. Their prices average 20% higher than Market Basket, with a number of items more expensive than Whole Foods. Much of the produce is browned and wilted - Not what should be expected from a smaller, family-owned chain. More than once I've picked through fruit with mold and expired dairy products. It is my emergency stop when I need something in a hurry on the way home (their prices and limited selection do mirror a 7-11!) By putting locations not near other grocery stores, they feel they can overcharge for poor quality. I've raised specific situations to the store manager who smugly could care less. Today I learned I could not buy a gift card there because I don't have one of their store cards - anybody think of anything more ridiculous? So adding an apathetic, rude customer service approach to my other complaints, I can't find any redeeming reasoning to shop here anymore. Better stores aren't that far out of the way. read more

The staff at this location make the shopping experience really pleasant. The bakery section is my favorite, particularly as they have a small selection of both gluten free and sugar free goodies; not a lot, however more than most supermarkets in the area. Although they appear to be a little short staffed, like most businesses now, the service is really awesome from Robin G, the bakery manager, Joanne at the service desk, and the folks who answer pharmacy questions, and the folks on pizza and subs. I often shop at the Walpole Big Y and generally find the staff very nice and helpful. However, many of the deli personnel in my experience keep their gloves on for extended periods of time without changing them. These gloves touch all sorts of things- door handles, other types of cold cuts, their faces, their face masks, etc. before they actually touch your food. I've tried nicely asking the deli staff if they would change their gloves before serving me, and they've done it, but clearly with an "attitude", as if I'm imposing on them. Makes me feel awkward. Even worse, today I decided to nicely talk to the manager about this, and he told me that I was making an "unusual request", but that he understood and will talk to them. I do not have confidence that this will amount to anything. Frankly, it's a well known and accepted public health practice to change gloves in between customers, and to call my request "unusual" is dismissive and suggests lack of understanding of the issues. I shouldn't have to ask them to do this- it should be their policy! I will see how it goes, but I will likely not be shopping there for too much longer. read more

So, I'll go a little further than my pal Anna P, who reviewed it first (and whom I don't actually know, despite the fact that I just called her my pal). I admit that if I had to list the top 3 reasons why I shop at this Big Y, it would look like this: 1. Free childcare 2. Free childcare 3. Free childcare That's right, boys and girls (and moms and dads), this Big Y has a Little Y Kid's Club. This means instead of trying to herd my two young children through a grocery store, trying not to run them over with the cart, saying "No, put it back!" until my voice sounds like Sunday morning after Saturday night bar-hopping, and adding a few more grey hairs to my growing collection, I can say, "Hey kids! Want to go to Kid's Club?", be greeted by cheers, and be hailed as a hero. And who doesn't like being hailed as a hero? Little Y will watch kids between the ages of 3 and 9 for up to two hours free of charge, as long as you don't leave the store premises. There are monitors in the store which display the Little Y room in case you want to check out what they're doing without getting too close - sort of like Wild Kingdom. The staff is extremely friendly and the same people have been working there for a couple of years, so they get to know your kids and vice versa. And you, my friend, get to shop without a nervous breakdown. Or, if you just want a little downtime before you shop, grab a cup of coffee at the bakery and sit in the little cafe... aaaah, blessed, blessed peace and quiet... The rest of the store is great too. Nice and big, very fresh produce and meat, a huge prepared foods section including fresh-baked pizza and other assorted comfort foods. They also have killer sales, by the way, and a double-aisle of international foods. (Yes, this is also where I purchased my not-safe-for-work-but-I-brought-it-anyway Instant Cock Flavoured soup, to the endless amusement of my co-workers. Okay, and me too.) Since it's so close to Gilette Stadium, you'll find most of the staff in Patriots gear on Sundays, and an occasional "Go Pats!" following an announcement for cleanup on Aisle 4. This is hands-down my favorite grocery store, and I do drive a little out of my way for it... especially if I have my kids with me. :) read more

Peppers are what drove me here. I've lived not more then 15 minutes away from this place for most of my life, but never really went in until a few months ago. I was looking for some really colorful and vibrant looking peppers for a photography project I was working on, and after visiting just about every store in the area, came up short. I stopped in simply because I was passing by, and hit the jackpot. They had at least a dozen various kinds, all picture perfect. i browsed around a little further and was pleasantly surprised. Huge selection, prices were better then where I had been shopping, and quality looked pretty good. Asked to be pointed in the direction of something I was looking for and was walked, not talked, to the right spot. Not exactly a Whole Foods or speciality shop, but certainly one of the nicer markets I've been to; definitely a few steps above someplace like a Shaw's. read more

Whenever I go to the Berkshires, I always make sure to stop at the Big Y. I like seeing different brands and their rotisserie section is excellent. I was recently telling a friend about ALDI and they said they shopped at the Big Y in Walpole ... woah- there's one in my general area?! I was excited to hear this information! Okay, to be fair- Walpole is not really my general area, but I'm always out that way and it's much closer than the Berkshires. I hadn't intended to visit the store so soon, but my friend and I found ourselves near Walpole and decided to find it. We had to resort to Google maps. We found two other grocery stores but this was along route one and not near where we ended up. The store is nice. It was packed with shoppers and there was a group having a children's birthday party in the cafe area. I didn't feel like there were as many unique brands as I remembered in the Berkshires location. Prices are okay. They're comparable to what I pay in my area so it didn't feel like a big savings to me. To be honest, it felt like any other grocery store. It's most similar to Hannafords with a nice bakery and prepared food section. Check out went smoothly and the cashier was pleasant. I'd stop if I needed to pick something up, but I wouldn't make a special trip out there again. read more

Big Y is the closest thing to the legendary Wegman's markets, based in upstate New York. The design is spacious, there's a cafe area, free childcare, and the take-out section rotates some great meals daily. The fruits and vegetables are really fresh, and the meats and fish superior to local competitors. There's even a computer game at check-out where you can win big discounts. The organic food selection is growing, including their Full Circle brand offering some quality items. Going to the market can be as annoying as the donkey in Shrek, but the Big Y is really an exception. During the Stop & Shop strike, they made their prices artificially low in order to try and win over S & S customers. Now that the strike is over, their prices are back up and quite a bit higher on average compared to other stores. Sneaky move. I still go to big Y occasionally but do most of my shopping at S & S. update: They replied saying that their sales were scheduled well before the strike but that is hard to believe given just how incredibly low their sales were during the month of the Stop & Shop strike. I have never seen sales that low since then at Big Y. I still shop there though now and then. read more

This is a wonderful grocery store! Unlike some of the other ones (ahem, stop and shop), you can easily navigate the aisles and it is never crowded. They have weekly deals that are usually really good, like buy 1 get 2 free offers. Plus, it is really fun to play the "Coin Game" after your check out. If you get three coins in a row, you win a coin that you can use on your next purchase. Also, the cashiers are some of the nicest I have ever encountered. They will make small talk with you whille ringing up your groceries. Overall, a really pleasant experience and well worth the drive. read more

This place is NOT just a supermarket. They have everything a normal supermarket does and more. A pharmacy (that only SOME supermarkets have), a "Little Y, Kids Club", that is definitely the reason some people shop here (where kids can go...), and Big Y Pizzeria, to order fresh made, delicious pizzas, which most other supermarkets DO NOT have. The prices are not high, yet they have lots of "Buy One, Get One" deals. Some items may be a bit higher, yet the service and employees are all very friendly and they have their own, different types of rewards. At checkout, there is a screen to play "The Game" to win Silver / Gold Coins, for special rewards on items. Normally they will have items on sale, which you can get a rewards card for free to get the deals, and if you have Silver / Gold coins, there are EXTRA savings, and sometimes you can items for very, very little or free! They do offer good cravings. Even though this store is AMAZING, the Walpole Stop&Shop is also amazing (and I know the employees and is closer, so I go there more often). The reason for only 3 stars is because when I went to the deli to get potato salad for the party, the staff working there were terribly rude! They had an attitude about which salad I wanted and how much I wanted. I tried to joke with them but they clearly hate their jobs! Never will I go back to big y for anything other than the cakes! Before we comment about the pizza shop and prepped food section, we would first like to share that we always have the pleasure and privilege of sharing amazing and wonderful conversations with the staff each time we visit. The freshly made pizza, wings, and jojos are especially awesome, but the pick your own filling stromboli's are made hearty, mouth watering which leaves one with excited thoughts of the next order. I'd like to especially mention Anna, who is a sweet person, always pleasant, and makes one feel important each time we place and pickup an order. During these times of COVID they prepare food with a smile. It is always nice to see social distance and PPE properly worn in full affect by all crew members. This an outstanding grocery store with a full in house pizza shop and prepped food. The serving size is enormous and delicious. If you are in the area of Tolland Big Y and looking for great pizza shop for a take home prepared food experience, look no further. You can not go wrong ordering food from this location. Homegirl had a function to go to, but not with her breath hummin' like a bird. So i decided to try out this "Big Y". Mission: get the least expensive pack of gum in half the time it takes for me to wax my eyebrows. Simple enough. I got my pack of wintergreen freshness and proceeded to checkout. My gum rang up double the advertised price. I conveyed this message to a most unlively and rude employee,whom i will call "Joy". Joy explained that this was the price with the store loyalty card only. Well, homegirl wants in on the fre$h dealz-so i said "Joyful joyful Joy, how can i get this card of savings?? Joy responded with a line up questions similar to those asked by the FBI, CTU, and KGB. -Is this the only time your going to shop here? A: Well, i may comeback in the future. -Well, then how often are you going to shop here? A: I dont know! (totally outraged at this point btw.) -do you live close by? Do you live in the area? A: its my first time here, i may come back if and when i please, woman!! Are you for real? With much coaxing she finally allowed me to fill out a paper and get the card. But no, the interrogation had just begun. The price of the gum was unchanged after the store card was applied. Just dandy. -where did you get this gum? A: "the candy isle" -where was the candy isle? A: where you have the gum and candy?!!! Just an awful experience with this employee. I wouldn't wish it on even O'brien from Downton Abbey.
