We also ordered their 5 dish meal set which was $65.88 and it comes with white rice. Essentially you can pick 2,3,4 or 5 dishes from a set menu available only for lunch from 11am-4pm. When we entered, we had to register in line on their tablet by the entrance. There was a line up but we only waited 10-15 minutes so it wasn't too bad. Ambiance was like your typical Chinese restaurant. For the dishes, we got Sweet and Sour Pork, Mushroom Fish Maw, Stir-fried Pickled Mustard Greens with Pork Tripe, Stir-Fried Beef with Hot Green Peppers and the Stir-Fried Beef with Mushrooms and Scallions. We also got the Salt & Pepper Fish. All the dishes were pretty good with very large portions. But the only issue was that the flavor was a bit too strong. I think they might've over seasoned the food. It was also too oily. I think next time, we will ask for less oil and less salt. The sweet and sour pork was not that great though. It was too sweet and the pork pieces was tiny. It also wasn't crispy at all. My favorite dish was the stir-fried pickled mustard greens with pork tripe. The pickled greens really added a nice acidic tang to the dish. As for the $9.99 Hainanese Chicken Rice, I can't comment on how authentic it is but it is such a great value. They actually give like half a free range chicken and the rice was infused with that chicken oil. It was quite delicious. Almost every table ordered this, some even ordered multiple. They do limit to 1 per person. I think this restaurant is great for Chinese food. The prices are cheap and the portion sizes are massive. The dish meal sets even comes with white rice per dish. Other restaurants charge $2.5-3 for a bowl of white rice. The flavor was a bit strong but I think some people would actually like that. But my family has a Cantonese palate and prefer lighter flavors. Next time, I will try their House Special Pork Tripe and Chicken noodle soup. I heard that is what they are known for. They also got buy two clay pot rice and get third free. We got the eel, chicken and salted fish pork patty. FYI the clay pot rice does take time , 20-30 mins. Space is incredibly tight. Seating area is like one long hallway with seating on one side and food selection on the other. There is also a small enclosed seating area at the back. When we arrived it was busy, we added our name to the online wait list and when we were called we were immediately handed a bowl and tongs. I asked if I could put my coat at the table first. The answer was no because we don't actually get shown to our table until after we pay. So we go through the line filling our bowl and then pay, then we are told our table was not ready and if we could put our sauce bowl together first. So there we are standing around with our coat, bag, number (to identify our order) and little bowl of sauce in a space that is already quite tight. Meanwhile there was a table for 4 empty. I think the look on my face said it all because immediately the table for 4 was taken apart to make 2 tables of 2 and we were seated. Because it was so busy it was hard not to feel rushed. The minute your bowl looked empty you are immediately asked if you are done and then it's taken away and the next question was if you wanted ice cream. This Scarborough location has been around for a long time as seen by the dated interior. Nonetheless it's still popular with some good promos to compete among the huge swath of Asian restaurants in this plaza. We chose an array of hotpot broths including the house special spicy, sukiyaki, pork bone broth & tomato soup. We came here to celebrate a family occasion, and Liuyishou delivered with its good selection of broths, meats, seafood, and veggies. The $8 Wagyu add-on on weekend was a nice upgrade--thinly sliced, tender, and worth trying if you want something a bit more indulgent. The $3.99 all-you-can-drink station was a pleasant surprise too, making it easy to keep refilling without thinking twice. Service was quick even despite it being relatively busy and a bit loud during dinner peak. Note the pricing per adult ($34.99 weekend dinner) excludes the soup base which is about $17 for a large shareable pot or $9 for an individual sized pot per guest so the bill can rack up. For me, this was my first time at a Liuyishou and it was quite the eye-opening experience. The selection of meats and veg to boil is impressive! Since my dining partner was well-versed in Sichuan hot pot I got to try some interesting items for the first time, like intestines and bull frog and had no problem with these novelty items since I had someone to recommend them and guide me through the process. She said some people will watch a clock and time some of the more sensitive items to make sure they don't overcook, although we didn't bother and focussed on stuffing our faces as quickly as possible. In addition to the free lemon water, we ordered a pitcher of Sapporo for $27 seemed a bit on the pricy side for a non-import brew. (Sapporo owns Sleeman which is in Guelph.) The ayce price for two was $66 (all prices without tax/tip) plus a two-flavour soup base was another $20 on top of that. So it was $153 with tax/tip for two of us. (Lunch is cheaper) For the two flavours of broth we had one super spicy Sichuan, and the other a milder bone broth one, which offered a nice contrast to try each broth with the various items. Since the atmosphere is bright and airy, without much for sophistication or decor, this would not be my first choice for a date night spot although the food is impressive, the vibe is not overly romantic and pretty basic. I can see now why it was not very busy that evening in May when we went with a price of over $150 for two, it was a good experience but you can do better for an intimate atmosphere at that price point.
