I had the day off work and decided to treat myself to some "Detroit Style Pizza" and it was scrumptious! the crust was light and fluffy and it wasn't too saucy, but had just enough cheese and just enough topping to make the pizza very delicious!! Then I warmed the pizza up hours later and it tasted good being ate with a fork!! I will be back to try another menu item, but the pizza was delicious and it's worth a try and the money!! the décor of the restaurant is neat too! they kept some of the old laundry mat and turned it into fancy mirrors on the wall!! read more

We are in for family weekend at KU. My daughter and I are having a late dinner-8:30 or so. The restaurant is less than a third full. We get seated and the hostess said she would get someone over to us as soon as possible. We were catching up and realized no one had come, it was 15-20 minutes later. In this time the table next to us had people that where leaving, they even cleaned off the table and NO ONE REALIZED WE STILL HAD MENUES?! The hostess stand was within our line of vision, she must of known we had not been waited on. I will say the food and drinks were good once we got it. No one came to check on us until we were almost done to see if we could use another drink. Heard so many good things about this restaurant. VERY DISAPPOINTED, especially during family weekend. I hope their service improve the remainder of the weekend. read more

Packed, well run, delicious! I got a Detroit special and blistered brocolli. I had a KC Pilsner while I waited which wasn't long considering how new and busy. Welcome to West Lawrence! So nice to have one other pizza option. The pizza is exactly as described: crunchy crispy cheesy on the bottom, super light melt in your mouth crust, wonderful chunky tomato sauce, and creamy house ricotta. Friends has generous burgers and sweet potato fries, kale salads with grilled salmon. Generous portions, great prices, cool design. Very happy. read more

I sure do crave their pizza (delicious!) but I am constantly disappointed with the carry out option. Every time they tell me it will be 15 minutes from the time I placed my order, it is at least 30 more minutes! Ridiculous. I remembered that from last time when I ordered tonight and I arrived 20 minutes later and I called upon arrival to tell them I was parked at the carry out parking spot and she said she would be right out... We checked out Big Mill during college freshman move in. Lots of emotions, so we wanted carbs. The food was excellent. We had two Detroit Style pizzas. Both were full of tasty cheese and an unique sauce. The margarita pizza had a good amount of pesto: it wasn't super oily like some. We had a salad too. We stopped in for an early lunch on the way through town. We arrived 10 minutes before they were scheduled to open, but the doors were open and friendly staff ready to serve. We had a couple teenagers with us, and while the menu does have lots of items that have a little hipster flair (the sausage pizza has a cherry pepper relish), the boys found things they liked to order and the adults were happy to see such a big selection of interesting dishes. We all had pizza and adults got side salads-- kale with beets, walnuts, goat cheese and a nice vinaigrette. The salad was deliciously different, and the Detroit style pizza was a treat for the eyes and SO good. The service was also friendly and quick. Cool atmosphere with bit of a hipster vibe (ex. they provide water in a tall glass bottle so you can self-refill. Overall 5 stars, would definitely stop in again if in town-- might even detour to have a meal here. read more

Just went to Big Mill for lunch. $37 for cheese burgers, fries and diet cokes! Asked for single patty burger instead of the normal 2 patty burger classic. Charged the same price as as the 2 patty burger $12! Not even given a discount waiter didn't even bother to tell us they'd be the same price will not be going back!! read more

More like the big disappointment. I came here expecting a spacious, windmill-themed eating experience. Spoiler alert: this isn't what I got. The restaurant is on the smaller side and the only windmill I saw was a small one outside, a far cry from the promised "big" mill I was so eager to set my eyes on. And I haven't even gotten to the food yet. Oh brother! For starters, the "sticky" wings are anything but. They actually slipped out of my hands a few times, likely due to my false confidence in their ability to adhere to my fingers. Had they not been advertised as such, I likely would've held on more firmly. Now, about the pizza. Get a load of this: the pizza was effin square. Now I'm no pizza expert, but I'm pretty confident pizza is supposed to be round, you know, like a circle? This was the furthest thing from it. I've eaten plenty of pizza in my day, heck back in my field hockey days at Marquette we ate it almost every day after practice, and every pizza I've ever seen prior to this one has been round. After this, my wife Parm and I were desperate for something to turn our frowns upside down, and we decided the pot de creme was the best route to take. Big mistake. I'm no Frenchman, but I would assume based on a name like "pot de creme" the dish would consist of, at the very least, a pot of cream. Wrong. Far from a pot, it comes in a little glass jar (not exactly a pot), and the only cream is on top of chocolate pudding. What am I five?! Needless to say I tipped my server Caleb no more than a dollar and got out of that dump as fast humanly possible. Overall, I think these wack-jobs need to brush up on their understanding of both shapes and the English language. read more

Ever since my family and I moved to Kansas from Detroit, my father always complained that there's never any good pizza joint. That is, until I took him to Big Mill. Their pizza was a great take on Buddy's, a famous chain up North. My only complaint was that I was disappointed with their Coney dog, I think it was just because it was sitting under a heat lamp while the pizzas were cooking. The staff were the best part, they were very informative and attentive on such a busy night! I definitely will be coming again and I can't wait to try something else. read more

My wife and I went to Big Mill the second night they were open and you would have thought they had been open for years with the way things were running. The "Detroit style pizza" looks like it would be a gut bomb (like Chicago style pizza) but is actually very light and airy with the cheese cooked crispy on the bottom and sides. Make sure to ask for a bottle of the jalapeno honey sauce for your pizza, it is a perfect balance of heat and sweet. One half of the restaurant is bar/kitchen and the other half dining area which is nice and there are plenty of great photos of the old laundromat and old windmill on the walls. Highly recommend checking this place out you will not be disappointed. read more

We love this place and dine here often. I promised my 12 year old a dinner out, just the two of us. Big Mill was our obvious choice. We sat on the patio like usual - because we love the patio and COVID. Unfortunately we found out that they allow smoking on the patio. 2 other patrons at different tables were smoking and it pretty much ruined our dinner. We felt rushed to finish and leave quickly to get away from the smoke. This is a restaurant, not a bar. I wish they had a designated smoking area away from the dining areas. read more

If I could give Big Mill a zero, I would. I used to enjoy this restaurant. It has great food but our experience was not worth it at all. My party (of 6) waited 2 hours for our food. We watched all of the tables around us get food and get re sat multiple times. Our server, Carissa, did not check on us once or apologize for the wait. We eventually had to go up to the server and ask where our food is, and she rolled her eyes at us in response. We had to ask for some sort of compensation- it was not offered to us. 30 minutes later, our food finally came out and the pizza was not cooked. The middle was all dough. We told our server again and she didn't do anything. The other servers were obviously laughing and talking about our table in the corner. The manager did not come and talk to our table at all. Our server slammed the checks on our table to top it all off. Horrible experience and I will never be back. CARISSA needs to learn better customer service skills, coming from 6 people who have worked in the restaurant and customer service industry. Do better, Big Mill. read more

Horrible. I've been eating there since it opened and was good. Must be getting ready to go out of business. This is my chicken sandwich. I've had it many times. Golden brown. Huge chicken breast. Not burned to a crisp and just greasy and horrible. Honestly, I think I got a piece of chicken that was probably left over from the lunch service. Threw away my last meal from there. Will never go back. Maybe they can survive on their pizza!!! Made me select a star. Otherwise, I would give it zero stars. read more

My husband and I consider ourselves pizza connoisseurs having lived in New Haven, CT, which is considered a pizza mecca. We were excited to try Big Mill on the second day they were open, as we had never had Detroit style pizza. The waitress suggested we each get our own pizza, I got the Ricotta and Greens and my husband got the Detroit Deluxe pizza. MIND BLOWN. The crust is crispy and light despite looking thick like Chicago-deep dish and it is a flavor explosion. We both aren't typically veggie pizza types but we loved the Ricotta and Greens, and ranked it higher than Detroit Deluxe. It's unique and it has some heat to it that isn't overwhelming. For two people I'd recommend sharing one of the small salads: the Mill Salad perfectly complemented our pizza. Service was also fantastic, we were expecting some delays as it was only their second day but we were seated right away and got our food in a timely manner. Our waitress was warm and friendly and gave great recommendations. Go here. Order your own pizza. Food coma. An excellent addition to Lawrence's vibrant food scene. read more

Was so happy to see a detroit style pizza place open here in town! Big Mill offers a bunch of unique pizza options, my favorites being the Chorizo & Squash and the Ricotta & Greens. So consistent as well... the proportions of the different flavors/components are always spot on (never too much or too little sauce/cheese/toppings whatever) and the crust is always perfectly done with crispy toasted edge pieces that just make this style of pizza so so good. Overall, never been disappointed here! I love their outdoor patio and have enjoyed some yummy cocktails here as well. The staff from what I have seen is super friendly and attentive as well. Our first experience was great!! Very good space, food, prices, service and drinks! Enjoyed it all and will be back with friends. Two small suggestions: use any lettuce except iceberg in your Mill Salad and PLEASE move the container of dirty water into which the employee regularly put a dirty cloth used to wipe tables. Having that out in the dinning room while we were eating did detract from an otherwise really nice time. read more

This was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had in my 21 years of life. I have been there at least 3 times and every single time I question why I decided to come back. Once seated, it took about 15 minutes to even be greeted with water. From then on, the service was so disappointing that I considered getting up and leaving because at that point, it seemed we would never see our waiter again. I do not recommend coming here unless you have approximately 3 hours to spare when it should have been an hour, maximum. read more

This new spot in Lawrence feels relaxed and cozy. We tried both of the salads, both perfectly delicious. Mine had thinly sliced cucumbers and radishes along with green olives. The salad spilled out of the bowl so one comment would be to serve n a salad bowl, not a soup bowl. The full onion "ring" and long cabbage pieces made eating a little challenging but what the heck for the health conscious. Along that line, Detroit pizza, who knew? Very light, almost puffy crust but crispy and even though it looked strange ( we ordered the ricotta and greens) it tasted wonderful. Good beer choices, something to try that you haven't seen before on tap Tv's everywhere but very few booths...and the booths are narrow, and I think that people prefer booths, but I get the space considerations because this restaurant will become very popular and fill up for sporting events. read more

Our friends brought us some pizza that they had left over and it was the best pizza I have ever tasted. The bacon tasted like it was from Farm to table along with all the other ingredients. The crust is golden brown and a little crunchy on the bottom and the what ever cheese they use along with their toppings makes for some dog gone great pizza. A group of women ages 57-72 tried to eat lunch. There were 6 of us. We wanted to sit together at two tables. The manager would only sit us at a picnic table in the sun, no backs, and sitting closer together than if he would have allowed us to sit at two tables pushed together with chairs that had backs and were in the shade! He claimed he couldn't do that because he didn't have a brain or heart. Meanwhile a larger group of men had pushed tables together to watch MONDAY Night football in the same space! We all left and went to Another restaurant where managers and serving staff are gifted with logical thinking skills and empathy. We wish for this manager to have a heart and a brain!
