We did the Pharaoh room and it was such a fun time! I enjoy that their employees go into character before the room and are very clear on instructions to keep the room fun for everyone in the future. Although my teammate was really bad at following instructions... We definitely want to come back and try some of the other rooms. I love escape rooms, and seeing the high ratings I was eager to try this place! However, ultimately I felt this place was largely middle of the road and had some flaws in terms of the overall experience. I won't go into details to avoid spoiling their rooms, but I'll go over some larger points. - I would give them a B+ for immersion in the theme. There was great prop design and a high quality introduction video. However, we could hear people shouting in the neighboring rooms, which really broke immersion and made it hard to hear the video. - The puzzles were overall fun, and some were very creative. One element was used in multiple puzzles, which made it feel a bit overused. It might have made more sense if it were closer related to the theme or story, but there was no justified reason for why it should be an important element. - We went as a group of 6 and there were 3 additional people with us. The space was very small for 9 people and the puzzles were a bit too linear, so we had trouble splitting work to be done in parallel. Many smart people were left waiting around because everyone was swarmed around a given puzzle. - For one puzzle, we knew how to solve it early on but because it wasn't done in a clear way, the answer didn't appear when we did the right actions. This caused a lot of confusion, and we had to ask for help, which echoed what we had already tried. With these sorts of puzzles, people should only encounter issues because they haven't solved it, not because of an inability to perceive the solution. - At the end, we asked the moderator for help for several minutes but they didn't respond for the rest of the game. We were waving around at the cameras, too, but no response. It turns out we had the final answer all along and we could have gotten out much earlier if we had been able to make contact! - Escape rooms also lose some value when there's little at stake. Actually escaping was rather anticlimactic - it felt like someone walked by and was surprised to see we were out. No one congratulated us, walked us through the puzzles, told us how we did with time, etc. The signs for the final photo were an afterthought, in a box by the crowded waiting area, and we felt almost awkward wanting to celebrate our escape. Some specific suggestions in response to these comments: Add a competitive edge with a leaderboard; take the time to relish in a group's victory or failure and go over the puzzles so people can see what they missed; have stakes to winning, like a small prize or at least themed photo props and "we escaped!" signs that match the theme of the room; make sure you are attentive to participants and don't leave us hanging! I hope this place improves since they had some creative ideas in their puzzles! read more

My son and I decided to spend an afternoon doing our first escape room -- in this case, "Pharoah" at Big Escape Room in Silver Spring, MD. Staff was ready and waiting for us when we arrived. After a quick orientation video about what to touch/not touch, our game leader showed us the room and added a few more instructions about not touching certain objects. (Unfortunately, the way she phrased her caution kind of clued us in on how one item would end up being used, and hinted about which items we would need to pay special attention to.) The actual experience was enjoyable. Some of the puzzles were a bit heavy-handed (hey, when you find a decoder at the very beginning, you can be pretty sure you're going to use it soon). Other puzzles were particularly clever and thematic. And we both enjoyed a bit of a surprise when the puzzle opened up into a larger experience than what we had been experiencing so far (and a better thematic expansion). Though "Pharoah" is rated "high" difficulty, we were able to solve the room and escape with no hints and 15 minutes remaining on the clock. I don't know if we were lucky, or if we're especially good at this kind of thing, or if the puzzles were too easy. In any case, we really enjoyed it, and we enjoyed the sense of accomplishment. For what it's worth, this particular room is probably best for a smaller group -- say 2-5. Too many people in the space will make at least one of the puzzles difficult to solve. We definitely enjoyed the experience, and would gladly return for another room. read more

A friend of mine is recovering from surgery so we are all taking her out to do things. The weather was predicted to be bad so I suggested an escape room to get her up and moving. This was my first visit to Big Escape Room and I have to say I was super impressed. I easily booked us online for a 4pm game of "Basketball" - a themed room where you are locked in the locker room before the big game. Unfortunately, a group earlier in the day damaged some of the room and would require some repairs. The owner called me right away and told me that the room I booked was damaged but if I wanted to come in anyway he'd upgrade us to one of the other rooms. We (just two of us) went and did the Pharaoh room. The room has a bout a 25% escape rate. We did pretty well, just one step short of completing it (which they showed us later). But we were totally appreciating the work that went into the immersive experience and let some of the time get away from us. I will definitely be back - for the other 3 rooms! Everyone from the owner to the rest of the staff were super helpful, friendly and nice. They took a picture of us at the end and even took one on our phones for us. HIGHLY RECOMMEND read more

i was literally disappointed from the time we walked in. I booked the basketball locker room for my son's birthday and nothing in the escape room worked. It was like we were on punkd. We just moved to this area and my son was feeling extremely sad because all of his friends and family weren't here. I thought i would surprise him by going to an escape room well this further ruined his birthday. When i asked management why they didn't tell us that the room was nonfunctional, he said that's not my job I didn't pick the room. I called the owners while there and told them i wanted to be refunded they were supposed to call back the next day that was December 11th and it's January 3rd. please do not book this place it's a scam. I felt robbed of my time and money. But most importantly I ruined my sons first birthday in a new area. read more

Today, I went to this escape room with my fellow teachers at the preschool I work at. This place has only been open for a week and it was a great experience overall. It was easy to find the business, located in an office complex above whole foods, after parking in a garage 1 minute away. When my team arrived, we signed a waver, were given basic instructions, and then were guided to the room where we watched a short video about our particular scenario, outbreak. After the video, we were given 1 hour to solve the puzzles to get through 2 rooms. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and all of the staff was very inviting and friendly. I would recommend this to anyone who has not done an escape room before and wants to have a great time. I am so excited to try other scenarios at this escape room or other escape rooms in the area. This escape room just opened this year. We got a groupon and it was easy to redeem and really affordable. The business is located above whole foods downtown silver spring, walking on fenton you can find the entrance across from gusto. Take the elevator up and go down the hall to 210. You will have to be buzzed in. The waiting room is cozy with little couches and they have you sign the waiver electronically. There is a bathroom down the hall outside of the office if you need to go may be easier when you first are getting there or are leaving. The hour was sooo quick. We came close to winning but got a lot of clues along the way. I wish they recorded the teams so you could buy the video after because im sure out reactions were priceless. I get why they dont though because people would post them and cheat but maybe if there is a non copyable way that would be dope. We had so much fun. Some of our group couldnt come so we were down to 5 but if we had 10 we would have rocked it quicker. We cant wait to do another room soon. We did outbreak since i recently binge watched the walking dead and everyone in our group was a fan. It was so fun! Pharaoh is going to be my next choice but they also have a clown room too. Everyone should try this at least once especially here. While the acting on the quick video was corny and i was like omg everyone is going to be so mad at me if this is wack, we actually had a blast. And you get feedback in the end too. Our (guide?) was great his name was sharath, he was so helpful and ensured we had a great time, im so glad we tried this place instead of going elsewhere. Shitty escape room. Don't go unless you wanna blow $33 in an hour. You can't tell whether some things are intentionally there or it's because the escape room is just trash and they forgot to remove it. There's price tags on some of the items inside the escape rooms and they're not part of the game. They just didn't take them off. There's paintings with broken frames which you would think are there intentionally but it's because they can't be arsed to replace them. Please go to a different one or just save your money and go to a theme park for the same price. There's chests full of random stuff in the rooms that contribute nothing to the game. Everything in the room smells and you can tell they have never been cleaned. Don't go. You will regret it. read more

This review is for the Outbreak! room. The clues in this room were a lot more intuitive compared the Clown room, and we had a lot of fun! Although we didn't make it out, (not by a long shot!), putting together the clues in the room made a lot more sense and didn't feel as arbitrary as the Clown room. The room was also themed very well, and our operator gave us good hints. She also showed us the solution after we had run out of time. Haven't tried the Pharaoh room yet, but if it's as good as this room, I definitely would! read more

Our group of 4 did "Outbreak" on Saturday. We've done a few escape rooms in the DMV area and this was one of the best. The crew and the Game Master were awesome and super enthusiastic - they even dressed up and played a part in the story. The room itself was exciting and the puzzles were difficult, but very unique and very enjoyable. We did not escape (honestly not even close), but it was a ton of fun. Even when we were stuck, we liked how the GM did not give us clues unless we specifically asked for help. When time ran out, the GM came in and explained all the remaining steps before we left. We used three of their rooms for my son's teenage birthday party. Excellent staff and service! Viola was also very helpful with setting up the party for us-- I was able to arrange the party last minute on the phone. They have multiple party rooms you can choose from. The kids had a great time despite being eaten by zombies and killer clowns at the end. We will have to go back. read more

We are experienced escape room enthusiasts, and after doing 70+ rooms we would not recommend this escape room over any of the other options in the area... Customer Service: 1 Technology/Functionality: 2 Aesthetics: 2 Fun: 2 Customer Service: The young lady who ran our rooms started off nice enough but did not show any enthusiasm or interest in our being there. After we escaped the first two rooms we played (even though there were some mishaps in flow d/t tech malfunctions or clues missing), her demeanor had changed from unprofessional to very unpleasant. During our last room we asked if a number/code was correct and her response was "does is work?" I said no, to which she replied "pfft, then it clearly isn't the right number" and then clearly laughed out loud to herself. ...so it turned out that it WAS the right number (even though I said it aloud) and it was a technology malfunction. Due to the technology malfunctions of room no. 3 (well over 5 minutes of delays that were out of the player's control) we didn't make it out of the room, so we asked for 5 more minutes. Her response was, the most she could give us was 4, because she had a lot of cleaning up to do and had a lot of work. (Was odd because she said we were the only people she had all day and it was closing time). On top of the strangeness that we already experienced from this person we were ready to leave when she then told us that she was the MANAGER there and that she doesn't make a lot of money. She hinted multiple times to being unable to afford much (including how she didn't have a car) and seemed as if she wanted a tip from us. ...we quickly left. If this person is indeed the manager, they should not be managing a customer service based business. Tech: multiple technology failures (could have been more excused if customer service made up for them). Locks wouldn't work and had to be taken out of the room, keypads not accepting correct combinations, black lights so weak that 1 inch away was impossible to show fluorescents. All that being said, the Pharoah room had some cool tech to it that was pretty standard to a good escape room. Aesthetics: pretty cheap decorations, rooms were sort of beaten up with minimal repair. Sub ceiling shown in all rooms, did not ever seem immersive or that we were anywhere else other than a cheap office building. Fun: we got out of all the rooms (with the help of the extra minutes in room no.3), and with us being enthusiasts we always have fun at escape rooms. Sometimes the weird ones that aren't that great are the funny memories that start the story with, "hey remember that time..." Hope this review helps future patrons and the owners of this business! read more

This was my first time going to an Escape Room so I can't compare it to any others. However, I am very impressed with the scenario/storyline they gave leading up to entering the room. The props, actor, costume and design all went perfectly with the theme. You definitely have to use your investigative skills and keep your eyes peeled for any and all clues! Each time you stumble upon one clue it's get you even more excited and eager to find the next code.
