It was a little icy/crunchy and to my palate had a slight freezer burn after-taste. But we had a completely different reaction to the wide selection of artwork sold at Big Bucks, all created by the girlfriend of one of the servers. We loved an image with a beautiful pastel sky over a beachscape with a lighthouse and the wild horses found on the nearby Islands. The print was just $20. Okay - it's a hot day at the Outer Banks - you have to go get ice cream - right?? Well this is a cute BIG store that devoted a good portion of the store to selling ice cream. Smooth, full of flavor and simply delicious! We had a family of five all hungry and craving some ice cream, and everyone was HAPPY! The waffle cones were fresh, the shake was thick, and there were tons of flavors to choose from to make everyone happy! It's a rather small ice cream and candy store, but the line moves quickly. I came to Big Buck after finding out that nearby The Chill Place was closed for the season (as of Oct. 1). It took a minute of wondering around Timbuk Shopping Center to find it, but I'm glad I did. The shop has an ice cream half and a fudge/candy/chocolate delight half. I ordered for our group, which was a bit of a process only because I'd originally planned to order moose tracks ice cream, which they don't have. However, the shopkeeper was friendly and remade a moose tracks-esque version with a cone. I had a cake batter shake, which wasn't amazing but was good. The shakes are also pretty large (at least compared to Washington DC standards)! If you're looking for a milkshake and it's off season, keep Big Buck on your list. read more

It's probably more apt to label it as "frozen dairy treat" than ice cream at this point. Service also left much to be desired. They wouldn't allow me to buy 3 scoops and pay for a cake cone as an extra charge. You can only get a cake cone with a single scoop. Why, do you ask? So they can nickel and dime their customers and making sure you don't buy a 3-scoop size and share with anyone. You must buy your own single or double scoop if you want a cone or cup. They won't give you extra cups or anything either. My recommendation? Go get a pint of Häagen-Dazs, Ben & Jerry's, or Tilamook ice cream from the grocery store with some cones. read more

The line was out the door for this place on a Monday night. They had a good selection of flavors but I think too many chocolate options for me but know your demographics. There was really only 2 choices for me The melon or the strawberry I went with the melon. I was quite surprised at how refreshing it was. Not too sweet and a very nice natural fruit melon flavor. The shakes were very large and you could get a wide selection of ice cream sizes. I thought the up charge for the fancy cones (waffle or waffle coated) at $2 was a bit expensive. Really bad ice cream. I know you expect ice cream to be overpriced in touristy areas, but we were at least hoping it would taste alright. It was clear that it had very low cream content and just wasn't good quality. As other reviews have mentioned, I'm not sure that it should actually be called "ice cream" instead of "frozen dairy treat". It was also very expensive. The server wasn't very friendly and limited someone in our group to one sample, despite the rest of us not trying any samples before ordering. It was not crowded when my friends and I, with four kids in tow, climbed the stairs to this second floor ice creamery. We had all eaten our dinners and therefore deserved the treat of ice cream. There are enough flavors for variety but not so many that you are overwhelmed (although I was halfway through my double scoop before some decisions were finalized). The ice cream was good and the service was great. There is also a coffee bar but we focused on the ice cream and the experience was wonderful. I'm right down the middle on this one. I think the ice cream here was good - not outstanding. It'll definitely cost you some "big bucks" though. $5 for a single scoop. $7 for a waffle cone with 2 scoops. The store does have a 10 person limit, although that didn't seem to be enforced. Also thought it was worth noting that the employees weren't using gloves as they were handling the ice cream cones. Stop here (or don't). Went inside and my daughter wanted mint chocolate chip, which was in the case. After being in line for 15 minutes the server said they couldn't serve us the mint ice cream because that was only for the service window customers even though she was standing right in front of it. So I had to go stand in the outside service window line for another 10 minutes only to have them serve the last of the mint chip to the customer in front of me. Needless to say, this is an absurd policy and poor customer service when all that was required was to scoop the ice cream right in front of them. read more
