Wow! My wife was eyeing this place during our weekend trip to Kitty Hawk. And I'm glad she convinced me to treat her to breakfast. We knew it would be a fun spot because of the full parking lot. We were pleasantly surprised to get seated fairly quickly. The menu included Craft Bagels that come toasted, and a variety of drink options. We ordered The Delbert on a Sesame bagel and the French Kiss on a French Toast bagel to share. Both were delicious! Everything about this place is 5/5, especially as they've moved and expanded their location in the past few years. Parking is much easier as they have an additional lot in the back so you don't deal with the main traffic. They have a dining in option or take out option. I think in the past, we used to be able to order take out and eat at a table if it was free but they're now reserved for people who opt to dine in. We went here for a quick breakfast/brunch before hitting the road. Very nice place and chill employees. We sat at the bar and es assisted by Allie. We ordered water and coffees. Coffee was hot and fresh. Very good to start the morning. Our first menu item we ordered was The Delbert. This bagel had a bagel, sausage, bacon, Canadian bacon and a fried egg on and everything bagel. It was hot, very fulfilling and came with a side of home fries. Next menu item was a banana foster French toast, which was on their special menu. I really liked that day made the bananas a candied fry before adding them to the French toast. Very delicious and I ate the whole plate even when my stomach became full. I had that with the side of fresh fruit which included strawberries, grapes blackberries, blueberries. One of our favorite stops in the outer banks! Super quick and friendly waitress. The Christmas decorations were so cute and festive. We had no trouble getting a table around 830 AM. The Oregon inlet was truly a perfect bite with the cold tuna and spicy wasabi cream cheese on a warm toasty bagel... just perfection! The owner approved is a delicious and hearty breakfast sandwich with delicious cream cheese. To start off, delicious bagels. I got a lox on everything bagel with tomatoes and onions, and it made my New Yorker heart sing. However.... I paid 18 dollars for this bagel. While it was delicious, I really can't justify this price for breakfast, especially since the price was not advertised. The person working the counter was very nice and I have never had a bad experience here. The inside had seating, but only for dine in, so I was relegated to a corner while I waited for my food to come out. This is a VERY popular bagel breakfast place! We arrived at 8:15 and beat the later breakfast crowd by half an hour. It was 10-15 people waiting at that time. The bagels are made fresh and the sandwiches were loaded with the fillings. I had the BLT on an everything bagel - it was so scrumptious. Everyone got something different and no one was disappointed! Stopped by Barrier Island Bagels this morning. I grabbed a bacon, egg, and cheese on a garlic bagel and a drip coffee. The food was actually really good and the service was solid, but man, the price is up there. I ended up paying $18 for the combo, which is definitely on the expensive side for a bagel place. read more

The bagels seem very overpriced, even for the beach. The bagels are large but they are a very light airy bagel, if that makes sense. That may be the style you like, I prefer a dense gummy bagel like I'm used to from the NY/NJ area if I'm paying $3/per. Best "deal" is to get a dozen at $21.50. The $16 half dozen seems offensive. Maybe their costs are a lot higher than I would know, but with the bagels being so light I just don't feel I'm getting value out of it. That said, the sandwiches are well prepared, the place is clean, the service is friendly. Parking in front can be tight and difficult to turn out on to the bypass. If that bothers you, there's a sign pointing to parking behind the restaurant that bay he better. They had a full bar inside which is nice if you'd like a Bloody Mary or other morning cocktail with your meal. That was a nice bonus. Didn't get anything but like to see the option. read more

Barrier Island Bagels is a great place for a quick takeout breakfast OR a sit-down experience with mimosas. I really like that they offer both. We ended up sitting down and getting a sit down experience, but in the future, we would just do takeout bagels. We ordered the biscuits and gravy to share, which we both were disappointed with. It didn't look appetizing and the biscuits were dry and hard. The bagels however, were fantastic. Maybe that's why it's called BI Bagels and not BI Biscuits. The rosemary bagel was a bit unique and absolutely delicious. I got it with the Jersey (smoked salmon) sandwich and loved it, although the cream cheese was pretty overwhelming as you can see in the picture. A bit less of that and more smoked salmon would have been perfection. Ambiance was fine, but nothing to write home about and service was lacking. Not because the server was bad, but because she seemed to be the only one working and it was busy. We often sat with no water and had to ask the busser for our checks. Again, I just feel that the takeout experience is more up our alley for the future. read more

Excellent bagels. Very large choice of specialties. I enjoyed the bagel and lox. As with many restaurants, service is the weak link. Our server didn't bring the knife and fork. And, she didn't bring the pot of coffee around again. Or stop by and ask if we needed anything else. It's just less than average service. Oh, and it took over five minutes after we were seated to welcome us. We'll go back, but I think we'll sit at the bar we better service is usually experienced. Barrier Island Bagels used to be our go-to spot for breakfast every time we arrived on the island. Unfortunately, after our most recent experience, that tradition has come to an end. We arrived and waited patiently for a table, only to watch two parties of the same size walk in after us and get seated immediately. When we brought it up to the staff, we were told they didn't know what happened and that they would "check on it." Obviously they were locals and had friends working there. Then... nothing. No update, no apology, no follow-up. We were simply ignored and left standing there. After waiting far too long with no communication, we left -- and we won't be returning. It's a shame to see a once-reliable place treat customers with such disregard. read more

This was our first time going to barrier Island bagels since the new ownership. We were a little worried about some of the reviews that we read but I try not to take too much stock in reviews and always give a place a fair chance. So we went on our last day and were on our way home. Every time we passed it while on vacation the parking lot was always packed but when we went, we found a spot and headed in. It was crowded inside as people were standing in line and waiting for their orders but the wait wasn't super bad. We placed our order and waited and when I was called to get my order, it was incorrect. One bagel was missing, it was missed completely at the time of ordering but I went up to the counter and it was corrected immediately. Overall, we had a great experience and would be back! read more

The consistency is reflective of a good NY style bagel. We are from the NY area, and have worked in Manhattan in the past. I share so that you know our qualifications. The service was prompt and friendly though we were only ordering takeout bagels. There are a lot of opportunities at Barrier Island Bagels though I recognize not all can easily be addressed. So we can start with the tight parking lot and general lack of parking. There are 15 spots total including one for handicap. You can't park on the bypass so the only other option available is to park at another establishment that has no affiliation to Barrier Island Bagels and has clearly posted signs stating to not park there. The salt bagel had too much salt for our liking though the everything bagel seemed appropriately dressed. Another pet peeve of any bagel lover is when the bagel is only dressed on one side, which is the case here. Both the salt and everything bagels only had the seasoning on the top. If you like an open face bagel then that is less than ideal. These bagels are gigantic so eating it open face may be the easiest method available to consume the bagel. Finally, the bagel, though large, is $3! That is a bagel with no cream cheese or anything other than the bagel itself. For $3 I would need someone to feed it to me. :) read more
