We ordered in the restaurant-- I got a chicken cheesesteak sandwich, and my dining partner got a calzone. The restaurant was rather surprisingly dark, but that was fine to just wait for food. The order took a bit longer than I may have expected-- maybe 20 minutes. Everything was packaged well so it was warm when we got back to our place. The chicken cheesesteak was good albeit SUPER messy-- which is how it should be. Lots of chicken chunks, cheese, peppers, onions, etc. The calzone was just OK-- more hollow than one might expect, thereby lacking in fillings. My dining partner said he wouldn't especially recommend it. Service was friendly. And price was fair. One plus is location-- 2 doors over from Duck Donuts! Overall, an OK option, but not something to necessarily seek out. read more

We've been using yellow submarine for years every Friday/Saturday the first day we are down there. The food is always good and prices aren't bad at all. The service is very good and they are always very friendly. When we had to pick up the food the one time we were out of delivery range, I came in carrying my half awake 3 year old the crew carried our pizzas out to the car for me. This is a Retro diner/take out type atmosphere in a large strip mall in the Outer Banks. The young man taking our order was so friendly and helpful. We asked what they were known for, and he said their subs - the most popular are the Philly steak and Italian sub. We were in the mood for pizza and wings. We ordered the Margherita pizza with pepperoni and sausage and It was so delicious!! We also added a half dozen bone in wings with honey barbecue glaze and blue cheese dressing. I've been an obx visitor since my honeymoon 30 years ago. Yellow Submarine was on the landscape back then but I never tried until tonight. My son and I were exploring locally owned food offerings after a long trip and decided on Yellow Submarine. We were advised when we placed the order at the counter, delivery would be about 35 minutes. Not an issue based on the traffic coming and going into this place. We ordered the large Yellow Submarine and a medium Greek specialty pizza. The former is the house version of a cheesesteak with onions, mushrooms, pepper, tomatoes, lettuce and mayo and cheese mixed in with the meat. We came to Yellow Submarine to dine in during the Thanksgiving week, the restaurant was pretty quiet since this was the off season. Decor is cute with some beachy vibes. We ordered a pizza half cheese and sausage. We had to try the rip curls, I'd describe them as similar to a bite size stromboli. Very tasty and something unique, I recommend ordering the curls for an appetizer. I'm picky when it comes to pizza since I'm from NY, but I'd give it an 8 out of 10. Salads are also on the menu incase you are looking for a healthier option. Service was good and they checked back on us on a regular basis. I don't usually stay in this part of the Outer Banks, but I wouldn't hesitate to come back for another pie. read more

I wasn't impressed really - and I wasn't really looking for all that much actually. Was in the area to go to Homegoods and every time I stop into that shopping center, I see Yellow Submarine staring me in the face. That day, I had a hankerin' for a cheesesteak so in I went. This place is in a decent location in this shopping center - right near Homegoods, Dollar Tree, Ulta and Duck Donuts. Next door to an OBX souvenir and shirt shop that gets a ton of foot traffic. So - it's in good company. You can't see inside thru the storefront glass so you just have to walk in. As you step inside, it's really weirdly laid out. It looks like due to covid perhaps (?) they blocked off the front half of the shop and put up a huge colorful Lego-block looking partition that you have to walk through to get to the seating area. The whole front half of the store has the ordering counter, a t-shirt "shop", the fountain drink station and some bench seating to wait for your order. Just a little bit strangely laid out. Everyone orders at the counter no matter if you're eating there or taking it to go. I saw a few people come in to pick up their online or phone-in orders. The place wasn't empty (which is always a good sign imo) and while I was there waiting for my order, people came in fairly regularly (this was around 1PM on a weekday). The line never ever got really long though. The interesting thing I noticed was it seemed like none of the customers were "regulars." Everyone who came in seemed to be a new customer - didn't know what to order, or how to order or where the menu was, or what was on the menu. That struck me as somewhat odd. No one came in and knew the drill or came up to the ordering counter and spit out their order without having to look at a menu. Point being: how many repeat customers ("regulars") does this place get I wondered. None that I saw that day. I have a theory as to why not though lol...read on. I ordered a 6" chicken cheesesteak - they have 2 sizes - 6 and 12 inch. I REALLY wanted fries with my sub. But a side of fries was like $7!!! tf?!!! WAY OVERPRICED. I get it - it's big enough to share I overheard the owner say. But how about if you just want your own order and/or you don't have anyone to share with? The fries cost almost as much as the sub itself. Skipped the fries. #tearshed I REALLY wanted an icy cold fountain drink to go with the meal until I found out a fountain drink (1 size) is $2.99! I ask again: tf?! Guys, your killin me here. Skipped the drink. I was hungry and really wanted to eat it there but without the fries and a drink to accompany the sub, I decided to order to go and head home. The small sub itself cost me $11. But had I ordered the fries and drink we'd be talking $21+ - JUST FOR A MEAL FOR MYSELF. Unacceptable for a quick lunch bite. Behind me in line was a sweet grandma and her 10 yo-ish granddaughter (first time customers as well). They ordered a couple personal sized pizzas and drinks and I think that was it - I heard the server ring up their order - $30+! Then another lady came in, looked at the menu and asked if there was any lunch specials. The lady (who I believe was the shop owner) goes "all we have today is a small pizza, 2 toppings and a drink for $7.99." Better deal for sure but I guess you only get that if you know about it or if you ask - ?? Nowhere was there a sign indicating this lunch special. Nowhere on the menu was the special printed. So how would you know about it if you didn't ask? Or if the order-taker didn't tell you? On a positive note, my order came out relatively fast. I took it home and unwrapped it. It was....decent. Not bad. Not raves. Decent. Had a decent amount of meat. The sub roll was toasted which was a nice touch. A bit on the salty side but I mean - it's beach fare, whatdya expect amiright? IIIIIIIIII was "salty" though because there I sat at the house with my sub wishing I had fries to go with it. I mean, if I was going to be bad and wolf down a greasy, cheesy, gooey, dripping-down-your-elbows, so-bad-for-you sub, I wanted to just pile on with the fries and soda. Sigh. So - would I come back? Short answer-No. If the sub was to-die-for good, then possibly - but only if I was in the area, at mealtime and if I was in the mood for something so bad for me lol. PRICES WERE HIGH FOR WHAT YOU GET. Check out the menu pics. I WAS TURNED OFF (and frankly insulted) at the prices for the fries, fountain drinks (which they make a KILLLLLLLLLLLLING off of.....so why gouge your customers?), and no combo meal pricing. To me, that just shows you don't care about customer loyalty or repeat business. You wanna get what you can right when the customer walks in the door.. And if you want to gouge new customers to make a quick buck, you run the risk of "one and done," like me, So....I'll continue my search for that perfect OBX sub-fries-soda combo and will keep writing about what I find. read more

Got the Buffalo chicken sub, chicken was frozen chicken you could buy outta the store alittle disappointed thought it was gonna be actual chicken barley any Buffalo taste to the subs, Philly steak hoagie wasn't that bad, wouldn't recommend for a vacation treat if your trying things, maybe the pizza is good. read more

We went a few days ago and ordered a personal pizza, salad and a cheesesteak. The one thing that struck me is the bartender proudly said that the steak was just cooked this morning (it was after 2pm at that time.) I guess I should have walked out at the time growing up outside of Philly. First, the 6" cheesesteak was $10.99 (WOWZA). It fell apart as I ate it and I ended up eating it with a fork. The flavor was surprisingly not bad but I certainly wouldn't get it again. The salad was small and in a plastic container that you would put a burger in, like a big mac. It was so-so my wife said. The pizza was middle of the road and had no real flavor. It tasted like there was just straight tomato sauce on it. Highly recommend this place for delivery while on vacay. We ordered from them twice during our week stay. Pizzas and subs were amazing both times. Rip curls were ordered the first time and delicious! Also got a salad the 2nd time and it was big enough for us to share. Delivery was quick even though we ordered both times near their closing time (my mistake) but they got it there with a smile on their face! This place is alright, 12 inch was very filling, didn't realize it came with (my least favorite) average potato chips, not cheap subs wish they came with a small side of fries or even simply a chip selection for example bbq chips. Their wings smelled good, but I also simply love wings lol -- overall it was alright, I'd just get a 6" next time, eat the lame chips, and then grab a duck donut next door. As we pulled into the Outer Bank to start our week long vacation, we stopped for lunch in Nags Head on our way to Kill Devil Hills. Our first couple of stops were only serving breakfast or brunch. We moved on to Yellow Submarine and found our lunch just after 12:30 on a Sunday. Our table for ten was ready immediately and many of the other tables were also occupied or would soon be filled with hungry patrons. The long bar stayed empty but would make a good spot for a quick dinner if the tables were all full. My wife and I split the chicken Philly, grilled chicken cooked with white onions, sauteed green peppers, and mushrooms. This is topped with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and white American cheese, served with potato chips (6-inch: $8.49, 12-inch: $13.49). Overall this is a very filling sandwich and the taste was good. There is plenty of cheese on top, which is a requirement for a solid Philly. The start of the meal were the rip curl appetizer we shared with the table. These are pizza dough brushed with extra virgin olive oil, fresh garlic, Italian seasonings, and stuffed with Mozzarella cheese and pepperoni, sliced into pinwheels then baked (12 count for $17.48). These are awesome and highly recommended! A smaller 6 count is available for a smaller group. Overall the prices are a little high, but that often comes with tourist destinations. Overall Yellow Submarine was okay. The seating and overall decor was a little odd, but it's a sub place so I didn't expect much. We found Yellow Submarine's food to be just as delicious as the pizza shop that was rated "Best on the Beach" -- it made for an affordable carry-out dinner after many, many nights of dining out. All the ingredients were very fresh, ordered the supreme and the sauce was very good! Yes, there was actually a good amount of sauce on the pizza which I love! We order from here at least once a year. This year we got chef salads, Greek salad, pizza, and rip curls. We placed the order online and received a text letting us know they received our order. There was no communication after that. No estimated time it would be ready and no text letting us know our food was ready to pick up. We gave it 45 minutes and when we got there the food was ready. Got back to the condo and we were missing dressings and chicken for the Greek salad. I tried calling several times and the line was busy. Fortunately they called and realized their mistake. Everything was delicious! We ordered bacon cheese fries, Caesar salad, and Ripcurls. If you order one thing, get the ripcurls. Again, Get. The. Ripcurls. They are pizza rolls and they are fantastic.
