Food: Was pretty good I guess it is hard to mess up fish and chips. Service: the service was great. Ambiance it's pretty run down. I used to come here before the pandemic I loved getting the soup and salad bar but they stopped doing it because of the pandemic and I feel like they waited to long to bring it back. My friend and I went to eat dinner at Big Boy on Southfield Road in Southfield on May 23, 2025. We entered the restaurant just after 5:00pm and while we were being seated, noticed that there were perhaps only four other tables occupied. We were both very hungry and were happy when the waitress came by to get our orders (Chicken Parmesan dinner and a Meat Lovers Omelette) fairly quickly. Soon after, the waitress brought my friend's drink, cole slaw and my fruit cup. Forty five minutes later, the waitress returned saying that the orders were held up because of the omelet, and it was dinner time. I want to reiterate that there were only four other tables of customers in the restaurant. Ten minutes later, my friend approached the waitress and said that we were hungry, where is our food After we had waited over an hour for our food we got up to leave. It was at this point, the manager (whom we had not seen at all while we were waiting for our food) said that our food was up now. I have been eating at Big Boy since the 1970s and have never once had to wait so long for food orders. This customer service is below contempt of any restaurant, especially one with a good reputation. read more

Those from the West Coast especially in So Calremember Bob's Big Boy. On the East Coast it used to Be Elijah's Big Boy, but now it's just Big Boys. This quintessential place was the creation of what we now know as a Big Mac. This is the ultimate old-school burger place. But after 30 years the menu has grown and it is much more than burgers. However the quintessential Burger is what I was there for. And it did not disappoint. The Bobs Big Boys was in Southfield Michigan. We went for a late lunch around 2:30 so the place was pretty empty so the service was great. I forgot how yummy their onion rings are. They're breaded not battered. I wish I could give you five stars but the place was a bit dirty. The menus weren't clean the floors were dirty. Overall I am absolutely delighted to have dined at your location. read more

I haven't been to a Big Boy since I was 6 years old! We just had to stop there for breakfast. It was just as I remembered it. The ambiance was familiar and comforting. The interior looked as if it hadn't been updated since the the mid-1980s. That goes for the menu as well. My better half and I had their famous pancakes, which tasted good. The coffee was meh, but expected and weirdly I enjoyed the blandness of their coffee? Prices were still reasonable, which made the experience even better. A private lot just off a busy road next to a large strip mall complex. The signs are slightly broken. Inside is a traditional Michigan Big Boy. Red brick, and tables and booths. Slightly classier version of diner food. Good service. Other customers appear to have been going there a long time and call back and forth to each other. Not sure how long this chain will survive, so worth a visit to see a Big Boy before they die off. read more

First time at this location and should preface this by saying I've loved Big Boy since I was a kid. I don't think this location deserves all the negativity it's received. I always order the spaghetti and it came out fast and was hot. I was taken care of by an older lady who was so sweet and funny. She reminded me of my grandma and I really liked her and felt bad she's working at such an old age. Anyways, she did a great job and was pleasant to have. I was also really happy that I was able to be in and out within my 30 minute lunch break. Food was good, just older folks eating inside and the inside was clean. Who cares if it's a bit outdated, as long as the food and service is good I'm fine with that. Hoping I have a good experience next time too and glad there's still a few locations left since Big Boy has closed so many. read more

For anyone who grew up in the Metro Detroit area, Big Boy was the place you went to for a casual dining experience. While originating in California, the chain is currently headquartered in Warren, MI. It really is a uniquely Michigan thing with a much smaller presence in other states. There are far less of them now than when I was a child, but when I went I either got their fish & chips or the double decker burger named appropriately the "Big Boy". The best way to describe it is a slightly refined Big Mac, which makes sense since the sauce they use in it is practically an imitation of the McDonald's equivalent. I haven't been here in years and I only ordered this for nostalgia purposes. It tasted good enough, but I wonder if the burger only tasted great because I was a kid and didn't know better, or because the quality is just not what it used to be. I have no regrets at all, but the place is stuck in the past and the dining room is evidence of this as well. The newer generation will never understand the appeal of such restaurants, but if I had to judge it based on today's merits it is really just good at best. read more

Food was good, fountain drink tasted very good (I'm picky) and service was fast. Priced reasonably.

Many Big Boy restaurants have closed and we were happy to find this one. It brought back so many memories as my hubby enjoyed his Big Boy, the Big Mac is such a sad wanna be! I love the Slim Jim. Soup (cabbage for me, only restaurant I know who has it) and everything on the salad bar was fresh and delicious! But most of all was our wonderful waitress who took such good care of us! Today's lunch was the "Super Big Boy Classic" hamburger. All the fixins of the original Big Boy hamburger but with 50% more meat and twice the cheese. Two all beef patties special sauce lettuce pickle cheese on a toasted sesame seed bun and French fries. For an added bonus I ordered a Greek salad and a strawberry shake, it was the perfect drink for this hot day in Southfield, Michigan. The toasted bun on the hamburger added just the right amount of crunch combined with the other ingredients was one yummy bite after the other. The fries were golden, thin and slightly crunchy. Rowla our waitress was energetic and friendly, she was attentive and very pleasant. There was a huge salad bar area with several types of salad options. When a place is so bad where do you start . Started with Chix noodle soup that tasted like thickened water with noodles. I searched for chix pieces but non to be found. Then the moment I've been waiting for the famous big boy. Sadly the cook melted all cheese off my burger. Wilted lettuce and burger patties cooked for what seems like a few hours. My son's meal wasn't much better. He had the Oreo pancakes that looked extremely sad with a couple of Oreo crumbs on tops. His eggs were cooked to a state of rubber. Didn't eat anything because they brought out an ice tea filled to the brim with ice when I asked for light ice which was not a big deal, but the cup was dirty and so was the container that the coleslaw was in. I didn't notice until I tasted the coleslaw with taste it old and wilted. Another guest walked over to me because she saw me taking videos of the situation. She told me she was just gonna leave because her food container was dirty and the men that were leaving as I was entering were leaving because their food wasn't cooked well. out with her. Ate here today. I don't love it nearly as much as my kids. They really really really REALLY love it. As in we are in Franklin and they beg until we give in to go to Big Boy. I can't figure out why they love it so much but it is a huge hit. They finished the upgrade. I haven't a clue what they did but the inside looks the same. It isn't any fancier now than before. They updated the menu and I noticed some stuff is removed (noticed because their whiteboard pointed it out that they still had the items available), but some of prices were different. I think the spaghetti was less expensive than before... During Halloween you can buy a book of coupons to go for a free kids grilled cheese, pancakes or burger. Maybe that's why my kids love it. The book is a buck. Overall I like the soup/salad bar, my mom likes the pick 4 breakfast and my kids like everything about it. It isn't a fancy joint, it is a $ American food place that is a bit slow. Stop with the high expectations and realize it is Shoney's with a different name. read more

I have been here a couple times and it has been sub-par both times. The first time I received biscuits and gravy and the service was pretty slow and the meal was moderately warm unfortunately. The second time I came to this place I decided to order something different. I ordered the pancakes with bacon. The bacon was cooked almost in a burned manner and the pancakes were pretty soggy and not very warm. It was quite the bummer because the waitress we had was incredibly friendly and she was very sad when I pointed out the problem with the pancakes. read more

You know in this time of covid and our restaurant suffering I have made an effort to use Uber eats doordash to support restaurants. But I'm getting a little pissed at how I'm receiving my food from restaurants if your food does not look like the picture you have displayed on your website or that door - or Uber eats is displaying then you need to take it down I had a terrible experience with this location trying to be supportive first time doing it last time doing it so FYI don't order the pot roast because it won't be sliced it'll be in chunks and when you bite into the chunks it won't be cooked all the way through. Hard to review the food at this restaurant; we walked out because of terrible service! We waited to be seated: the hostess knew the people in front of us so they were seated. The hostess then disappeared without seating us. After waiting a few minutes, we sat ourselves. Absolutely no one came to our table to greet us, give us a menu or anything. We waited 10 minutes and still no one came. We went back to the counter. They hostess came up, I tried to tell her why we were leaving but she kept talking over me and wouldn't let me talk. Just left this establishment the service was horrible. Sure enough they close at 10pm the waitress came and said "carry out only" the manager set us down. I just felt so uncomfortable the wait staff didn't want to come serve my brother and I so we just walked out. just moved to the area. saw the big boy statue outside and told myself i had to stop and check it out. i ordered the the chili cheese fries, and the make your own breakfast" thing with eggs, turkey sausage, hash browns, and biscuits and gravy... i forget what it's called. my server was a sweet lady who made some recommendations, and was very nice. unfortunately, the food wasn't very good, and there was a huge breakdown in communication between my server and the kitchen staff. first off, they made a grilled cheese instead of chili cheese fries, so i got my chili cheese fries after my breakfast. the fries were undercooked and there was barely any chili or cheese on there. they also forgot my diced onions. by the time i got the onions, my fries were cold. the onion was also cut up into giant wedges, so it was like taking bites out of onion straight up. the water also tasted funky - like unfiltered tap. the hashbrowns were also not well done like i had asked for. maybe i'll just skip the breakfast menu and give it a second shot with the lunch items. it seems like a lot of other people enjoy the food here. read more

Ah, Big Boy. :) Though my daughter's sentiment is, "I'm worn out of seeing Big Boy," I don't mind this one. They have such a cheap breakfast menu, as well as a decent lunch buffet--which is vegetarian friendly. This particular location has the weirdest waitstaff on schedule in the early morning hours. One of them seems she's been there for 40 years and has lost all gusto for life, let alone serving people at Big Boy. But, I can't say that I blame her. I have been going to this Big Boy since High School and it has always remained a good place to go. (I graduated from Lathrup in 87 if that tells you something). You do not go into Big Boy and expect aything other than Big Boy, and Big Boy is what you get. :) The staff is always very nice, the food is what you remember, the night manager is always really nice and outgoing. The prices are straight-forward and good for what you're getting. The only thing I wish they kept going all year around is the Friday night Fish bar. I miss it. read more

My husband and I are frequent flyers at this restaurant. The manager and the wait staff are wonderful. The food and the prices are the greatest. Our favorites are the fish and chips, onion rings, french fries chicken tenders, brawny lad and the swiss miss. The flavored lemonades are very good. The soup and salad bar is always a winner. I give this home town chain three stars because it's a home town chain. When I was younger my family and I dined frequently at Big Boy. It was usually my Grandmother taking all of the grand-kids. On my last visit I wasn't impressed with the food. Our waitress was attentive but the food was not great. I've had better from coney island restaurants. The buffet needs to be discontinued all together. Now on the other hands the pies and cakes are still great! I bought one for my Mom and she loved it.
