They basically have the name and decided to make whatever they wanted, and they're menu selection was spot on. I was bamboozled by all the rave reviews. We were not impressed, at all. Yes, there was a line, I'm not sure why. I ordered and was pleasantly surprised by the inexpensive total for all the food and drinks I ordered. I got to the window and was immediately handed what I thought was everything. Since previous reviews said they never mess up orders, I trusted I was good-to-go. I pulled into the parking lot and only had one burger (of the 5 I ordered) and the fries and gravy. I had to go back through the drive-thru and the employee was yelling at me that she took my order and that's all I ordered. I yelled back that I had ordered 4 more burgers, how could she miss all that? She said the speakers don't work right. Well, if she had bothered to repeat the order back to me, I would've known half of it was missing. Or, if she had given me a receipt, I would've noticed. But, nope. I reordered what was missing and had to pay again, now it's not as inexpensive as I thought, quite expensive actually. Was it worth it? Nope. Two adults, two kids, a toddler and no one liked their burger - bland, meat too thin, way too much bread. My preteen said the pizza burger flying thingy was pretty good. No one liked the fries, they're literally the same fries as McDonalds without the salt. The gravy was disgusting, no one liked it, it was bland with a weird taste, and it got thrown out. The drinks were good, though. My kids even came up with several hilariously accurate jingles like, "the only thing worse than our fries is the gravy to dip them in." I'm not sure what the deal is with this place's popularity, but totally not worth the time or money. read more

Dave from az... bobs walleye sand was so fresh it tasted like it just jumped out of a lake. Absolutely loved the gravy and fries. This is a drive-tru, not a sit down restaurant. The line may look long at times, but they get people through pretty fast. Make sure you look at their menu online, as the giant menu does not describe their food and it is hard to see later in the day. Their fries are below average, as sometimes they are served cold. However, the pizza burger is really good. That is what I would recommend if you are looking for the best burger at Big Boy. read more

My friend invited me to come here at Big Boy Restaurant. My first thought was, Oh my god, My tummy will be full tonight. I already imagine big servings of the food. So the moment we came in the doors. I can already smell the aroma of the food. Good thing, I haven't eaten yet before coming here. I love their pizza! I didn't noticed that I have eaten too much. I used to love this place years ago when the burgers didn't taste so card board like when you can taste them through the condiment dousing. The pizza burgers flying style used to be so good and fresh and now they seem canned. I do like that they offer their sandwiches flying style but a few years ago it seemed exotic, now i just feel like they are hiding some deep nasty secret in that flying style tiny bread pocket. my favorite thing is the chicken gravy and fries, but yum, fries and gravy? if i am going to eat 40 grams of fat in a side, i better be impressed. read more

For fast food, this was pretty good. The Alpine burgers taste like a Big Mac used to. The gravy that comes with the fries was a surprise the first time, but you learn to love it. We also love the frozen cokes, but we learned that a large frozen coke is just too much and will only lead to brain freeze. Stick to the small frozen coke, it's safer. Maybe it used to be better once upon a time, but even if it's not that good anymore, it's still better than almost any of the other fast food places in town. read more

I've lived in Bismarck for 14 years and I've never been here and my friend dragged me to this fast food joint. WELL, I have to say it was pretty good. This place is amazing! It's like getting stuck in some weird time warp from the '50's. It's just a drive-thru that seems like it hasn't changed since two buns and a patty was first called a burger. I've eaten at Bob's Big Boy in CA since I was a kid which was always more of a traditional diner style restaurant. This place is nothing like that whatsoever. The menu is entirely different. It's not often that I come to Bismarck and so this place was a must stop more curiosity then anything, and I was not disappointed. Ordered a Big Boy Original built like a Big Mac but void of the corporate greed and preservatives, delish! Also had three pizza burgers (WTF?) flying style (again WTF?) jeez they were good, I ate two of them, while driving before we even arrived at the Fams house. They're like flying saucers with marinara, but a burger lol. I also had a Chocolate Malt, I can't even begin to tell you what restaurants serve Malts and how badly I was craving one, but as fate may have it I was able to scratch that itch that'd been tormenting me. We also ordered the fried chicken with tubs of fries and gravy!! I'll tell you what-- I was living a high calorie, saturated fat dream! One that I only wish I could relive on a weekly or so basis, but sadly you can't find this little gem in CA. read more

I think this restaurant gets all the positive reviews from the nostalgia of going here as a kid. The fried chicken, fried, and gravy are pretty damn good. However, the burgers are probably the lowest quality meat in town. For the how long the line is all the time you would think quality doesn't lack but any realistic review doesn't commend this place on quality of "burger". read more

While this still is one of the best fast food places around and a Bismarck classic, the service has gone down hill the last few years, while the food is still great, except for the fries are always under cooked and never crisp. The main attractions are the pizza burgers (flying style) the alpine burger, the Big boy original (similar to a big mac, but better) the chicken and gravy (the real gravy like the used to serve at KFC's way back when) are super together! The drinks to have are the hot-n-tot or vanilla coke (they used to have that before they started having them in the stores again) Then there are the purple and brown cows (grape and root beer flavored shakes) which are also great. Even with the slip in service and the fries not being as good as everything else, this is a MUST from time to time, and certainly if you only get here once in a while put it at the top of your list. read more

For being a fast food place, Big Boy is definitely up there. The food is amazing. Any burgers you get should be tried flying style, I think it just makes it way better. The service is pretty fast, however, there is often a line. read more

If you want authentic curbside burgers this is the place but if you want good chicken this is not the place. I love the alpine burgers but the chicken is way to greasy for my liking the fries are not to good but the gravy covers up the bad taste. The staff is very friendly and service is quick and always with a smile. Like I said if you don't order the chicken you'll like this place. read more

was here on business recently... ordered what everyone recommended based on other reviews... it was ok... the line was so long it blocked a lane of traffic... moved fairly quickly... food was pretty good for north dakota... lol (i'm sorry if i offend anyone but seriously... yikes)... the lady at the window was in too big of a hurry to really be nice.. she slammed the window in my face twice with a loud "HAVE A NICE DAY"... really irritating but i get it, they're in a hurry... made the mistake of ordering a large fry... medium is ok... large is massive and costs 7 bucks... my review for the food is strictly based on comparing it to the other food i ate while there... it was toward the top of the list... wouldn't even be in my top 10 back home though... read more

A must-stop place as you head through North Dakota! I'm addicted to the fries and gravy and the diet coke hot-n-tots (cinnamon syrup in your soda). The hard part is, what flying style burger to choose? Pizza usually wins. The boys love the brown cow and purple cow shakes. My husband who hates burgers is always very happy for the fried chicken. The Big Boy is an American icon. Whenever we are in Bismarck we try to stop at the Big Boy for lunch. It is just a drive thru, so plan on eating in your car or taking it home or to your hotel. There are not many places anywhere that you can still get a pizza burger flying style, which I highly recommend. Whatever you decide to order make sure you try the french fires and gravy. Bismarck's Big Boy... If I'm hungry and in the mood for Big Boy food I need to look at the clock to decide if its Big Boy or any other restaurant I'll be going to. You would think that restaurants would hold to a time when they closed, for example: Sunday thru Thursday 10pm. Friday and Saturday 11pm. (or at least 10 or 10:30). But, If it's getting close to 8pm I'm not even gonna bother driving to the Big Boy... chances are they'll be closed. I'm betting that their reasoning is... " Heck, It's been 10 minutes since we got a car in line... Let's close." It's normal to drive to the Big Boy, hoping to get some fries and gravy, only to end up swearing to yourself that you'll never come back and then about a month later giving them another try but only finding them closed again. Who's in charge ? You open at 10:30 am but what time are you suppose to close ? Pick a time and stick to it, so we dont waste our time and gas. I give it 1 star because I dont get a chance to rate the food. read more

I've been a lifelong fan of Big Boy, and I can't get enough of it. Even though the place can take 3 orders at a time, the place is almost always overflowing into the street. My favorites are the purple cow (grape shake), pizza burger flying style (a pressed sandwich instead of on a bun), fries and gravy, hot n tot (cinnamon coke), and the alpine burger (reminds me of a deviled egg without paprika). These are THE best shakes/fries/pizza burgers/cokes you will get from a drive thru in the entire state. A large order of fries must be 2 pounds (comes in a box you normally get your whole meal in) and the gravy is a whole pint. I haven't even tried the chicken or walleye or half their stuff because I just love what I always order that much. I love that it's just a drive thru so that they can get your food out faster then you can park in the giant lot and watch the cars go by, or sit at a table and feed the birds, but at the same time I don't because I always want to walk back in and get more! read more

Love Pizza Burgers Flying Style! However...so upset today!!! I obviously go there for the food, not the service, but when they forget the food.... Well, I order pizza burger and a 2 pc chix snack, fries and gravy. They hand me my drinks, and one bag, and as someone said a shoebox of fries. I get home only to find there is no chicken. So I am already upset and call Big Boy. I told them my issue, and before placing me on hold I hear the man say what sounded like 'someone trying to get a free meal.' He asked me to wait a moment, and put me on hold. He came back on the line and told me I could come pick up my chicken. I told him that was out of the question! And he offered to send me Big Boy credits for a little extra than what the chicken costs. I said fine, and then he told me to wait again...then hung up on me. I was beyond disgusted! I called back again and gave him my information and said it would have been gracious of him if he would have checked to see if there had been a mistake made while handing out an order. Im sure somene would have said...oh...here is the 2pc chix!!! And then appologize at that time! I was trying to make light of the situation and also added, did you find the 2pc chix? I had to ask because he asked me if it was a thigh and leg or breast. Serisouly man...my chicken wasn't in the bag! What a terrible experience! The problem I have with them is....They have no set closing time. For example: last Sat night they closed at 8:45 pm. I know because I was the last car served. ( it is a drive-thru ). You would think since it was a Sat night they should be open till 10 or 11 pm. I guarantee they would get the business. There's no reason for ANY fast food ( especially a drive-thru ) to close whenever they feel like it, probably so they can go out and party. Where's the management ?? These way too early closings happen alot !! I drove there one evening to eat and it was already closed and it was only 8:30 pm. They should set a closing time ( perhaps 10:00 pm ) and stick to it. It's to the point that I'm afraid to even attempt to go there to eat if it's 8pm or later. Someone needs to contact the owner and say to him " What the hell's going on ?" They have a sign that says " OPENS AT 10:30 AM " How about a sign that tells us when you close !! Oh, but that wouls interfere with your partying. read more
