The Glenn Custom Framing - Jeff Tochner, artist..."Bob The Dog" framed (soon...) @ The Glenn

Last summer in Iowa, I bought Gayle a print by a local photographer. It's a gorgeous farm country…read morevista that was unfortunately damaged thanks to the UPS Store in Ames. The Artist (Dan Ruf) was kind enough to send me a replacement, and this time the print arrived safe and sound and in a much sturdier package. The only work that remained was getting the print framed and then wrapped up to put "under" the Christmas Tree. And after reading the glowing reviews from Dorothy, Tam, and Toni, I decided to give The Glenn Custom Framing a try. This part of Stockton is nearby to my home in Albany, but I'm surprised that until now I never ventured out here. There's a few other businesses around including an art gallery (next door) and a coffee shop a block down. The Glenn actually has more of a combination art gallery, framing shop, and "messy" Berkeley gathering place feel, with a cute little guard dog that greets you when you enter. And it's the real deal. The bird houses on the wall were pretty cool and well priced. However, I immediately knew that Gayle wouldn't go for it and that in our combined household, there was no place to put it. The same went for some really nice glass pieces that were displayed within the store. So I concentrated on the frame and after a bit of option negotiation, settled on a very nice frame of which Gayle was very pleased. I especially appreciated Kathleen's willingness to work with me and her interactive good ideas and taste. The Glenn is also a neighbourhood business that in these economic times deserves support. And like Phil the Barber down the road, this is a good place to catch up local news.

Bob is safe and sound and waiting to be framed at Kathleen's new site across the street from her old shop. The Glenn has moved to 7002 Stockton Ave. RIght across from where it used to be. Its open for business says Kathleen Glenn, the shop's owner. Same hours, same great stuff available for purchase *and* same high-level framing. Now if "God Explains String Theory To Bob-The-Dog" would just be ready to grace the wall of the den here at Casa Canine....hint, hint, hint... Emmett, Furby and Smiley will be so proud of the new decor.* 3/20/2012 Bob-The-Dog has just entered Casa Canine. Which is a wee mite like Siegfried entering Valhalla. You know..thunder and lighting, Sturm und Dank. The whole shebang...the picture will be on a wall in the den tomorrow. (The den is where the dogs live, in case you hadn't figured that out.) I thank Kathleen for her discerning eye, Smiley for his decorating skills, Emmett for settin' up the welcoming howl. And Furby? Well I thank Furby for letting the rest of us indulge in this foolishness. Furby has impeccable taste.

Rodolfo truly is a joy to work with and is so knowledgable about his craft. Couldn't have pictured (love a good pun) working with anyone else for the first framed piece in our son's nursery. While at a community holiday fare, we bought a super cool piece of art from a local vendor of a map of El Cerrito which includes my husband's work site. It's playful, colorful, and full of joy. After utilizing the Yelp app to find a framing company close by, we found Artistic Picture Framing. After meeting the crew in-person, we knew we were in the right hands. We worked with Rodolfo on choosing the right colors for the piece and chatted about becoming parents, the nursery we were building, and the magic we were hoping to encompass and build around from this staple piece. He captured truly what we were looking for at an affordable rate. Looking forward to utilizing this service for future art, so happy with the outcome!

New owner... not the same Stoll…read more My mom had my college diploma framed at Stoll with George, the previous owner, about 12 years ago, and in the last few years, the paper started to ripple slightly. Since there was a lifetime guarantee posted on the back of the frame, I took it back to same shop, but unfortunately the new owner, Saul, was not able to honor his predecessor's guarantee. I had another item that needed to be framed as well, so I decided to go ahead with working with the new owner, Saul, anyway. He showed me a nice variety of frames and I chose two that complemented each other and worked with other frames already in my space. He recorded my choices in his notes and charged me a high, but reasonable price for quality framing of this type, and I paid half as a deposit. He said it would be three to four weeks. Five weeks later, I called to see about my frames and he said one was delayed another couple of weeks. When they were ready (a month late), I came to pick them up and the documents were well mounted, smooth, and clean... But they were in matching frames. I said that one was wrong, and he said that unfortunately he had misplaced his notes, so he couldn't confirm, but had relied on memory and thought I said identical frames. Though I was dissatisfied, I chose not to have them redone and rather just to take my items with me. Saul told me the remainder of the payment would be $100 higher than he originally quoted. I showed him the receipt for the first half of the payment and his original quote, and then he agreed to that accept the amount he had quoted. I have not been back to Stoll since. I have, however, had very good experiences recently with framing a few items at Storey Framing.

I had 7 pieces of art that I wanted to update the matting for, some with multiple openings in one frame. Moreover, I have been to 3 framers for a very special custom piece and never went through with the order because of poor designs and awful customer service. Devondre did what they couldn't due in 15 minutes and I gladly paid $600 for this one special piece. From selling me a few quick ready mades, redesigning mats for pieces I already have, to custom work, I got 8 pieces completed in an hour. Thank you Devondre, you have a new regular customer in me.
