Mata and his crew did a great job replacing cracked and broken old concrete around our Berkeley home. Easy to work with and fair.

I would have given ZERO stars. Don't trust their overall YELP rating. I made that mistake. I feel the finished work (driveway, pathways, and wall) are reasonably acceptable. This is ONLY because we checked daily work and instructed them to fix mistakes and sloppy work. They spent a lot of their time redoing what should have been completed right the first time. Daily progress (or lack there of) showed us that the owner/project manager (Tevita/Mata) is not a good project manager nor that he gave his crew clear direction on this project. The process after contract signing was horrible...not at all professional. The project took much longer than Tevita initially quoted (over 2 months vs the 2 weeks he originally told us). This resulted in change orders and cost overruns. He also tried to charge me to fix their breakage/mistakes/errors (e.g., fixing the sidewalk his workers broke). His crew was not respectful of our property (we had to live with their mess...it's not a vacant lot). They did not regularly clean up the work site nor organize equipment and materials left onsite. Seeing their lunch garbage (cans, bottles, wrappers, etc.) at the end of their workday was common. This continued even after repeated complaints to Tevita and to his crew. No one on site could to provide straight answers as to that day's work or when specific project goals would be completed. Whenever I would spoke with him, Tevita made excuses, provided misinformation, denied deliverables he previously promised, and deflected from answering direct questions. He has a habit of talking over the customer when asked questions he doesn't like. On at least one occasion, he raised his voice and started yelling to avoid answering questions. If it was not in writing, he'd say it wasn't what we discussed. I have never had such issues when working with professional/reputable companies. Tevita and his crew failed to meet every single deliverable date he set. I found him very difficult to work with. I feel that he does not show proper respect to the customer. Instead he appears to think that the customer, the person paying him, should accept subpar work. I suspect that he may also not fully understand the processes involved with the work being performed. I feel that Tevita and Lamata Concrete are not professional. They didn't use professional equipment and they didn't manage the job site or their onsite work time professionally. Their workers typically started late morning and were gone by early afternoon. Lamata Concrete has major logistical problems. They couldn't get an adequately-sized crew or required materials to the job site at the start of any given day, typically interrupting workflow for hours to go fetch supplies. Had they staged materials and tools at the worksite (where there was ample area to store all materials needed for the entire project) and had his crew worked a full 8 hours per day at the job site, I believe they could have finished weeks ago. They are SLOW...3 weeks for a stamped concrete driveway and pathways. I definitely CANNOT recommend them for a cinder block wall. It took way too long (over 2 months) to complete. I feel like they have never built this type of wall. I regret hiring Lamata Concrete. I CANNOT recommend Lamata Concrete nor would I use them again. They were such a hassle to work with compared to the many other professional/reputable companies I have hired. My opinion...take their negative YELP reviews seriously and ask for references and talk to those references. Tevita's response is a great example of how he makes excuses, provides misinformation, denies promised deliverables, and deflects from addressing the real issue. I had a large asphalt driveway that needed to be replaced. It is wide, steep, and had invasive bamboo sprouting from cracks. It was a mess. To make matters worse, it is highly visible from the street. In addition, parts of the pad at the top were inclined toward the garage, allowing water to seep in when it rained. We contacted Lamata Concrete for a quote. Once we signed the contract, they gave us an anticipated start date and end date. Mata and his crew deserve 10 stars. We reached out to them for a 2nd quote to build a new wall around our pool and make repairs to an existing wall. The job was a bit complex and the design plans were a bit fluid, not yet set in stone. Mata and his team showed up to assess the job. He was communicative, responsive, AND the price was right on the money. He was a bit less than the other bid but that was only the cherry on top. The deciding factor was his professionalism. We hired Lamata to tear out a side lawn and pour an extension to our driveway. We did most of our communication over Yelp, getting the quote and settling on a price. The workers came early in the morning to start work on excavating, leveling, and laying rebar. Mata came by to discuss the work and some additional work that needed to be added on, such as a drain and removing an old piece of concrete to repair it. Mata was very friendly and knowledgeable. His guys worked fast and had all prep work done within an afternoon. Mata informed us he would try to get on the schedule for a cement truck but was unable to so he decided to have his guys hand mix and pour. They showed up on a Monday and got right to work, mixing and pouring around 500 sq feet of concrete. They worked for about 12 hours. They came the next day to clean up and do the finish work. All in all, the whole process was less than a week. We made sure to stay in contact via text with Mata during the whole process. read more

This business responded to my yelp estimate request for repaving a parking lot saying "$55K". I yelp messaged them twice, emailed them twice, call them twice and left voice mail asking them for a written estimate outlining what they are going to do for $55K. I receive No response. I finally called again and spoke to the owner. He told me that a written estimate will be $150.00. I ask if there is any guarantee on the work, he said "concrete crack, asphalt crack, the earth move we can't guarantee.... blah blah". Let's just say it was not a pleasant conversation. I am not going to hire this company. I have gotten FREE WRITTEN estimate from other companies that are very pleasant to communicate with and responsive. eg: All American paving, Calvac paving, CDM Asphalt.. We had Lamata Concrete come out to our home in Concord to pour a simple slab on a side yard. Even before coming out, Mata took a look at some pictures I sent him and he estimated a price over the phone which was super convenient. The day he came out to look at the project site, he confirmed the price he quoted over the phone and we signed our contract. This was on a Friday, he had his crew at our place Monday! His guys were super nice, respectful, and most of all: busted out the job and finished the same day. If you want fast, no BS service for all things concrete (and maybe more) I highly recommend these guys. Oh yeah, and he completely smoked the 3 other quotes we had come look at the job. The price was good, but that is as far as it went. Communication was poor to non-existent. The excavation was done and the pour of the new driveway was reasonable, but the finish work was sloppy. The stamping was inconsistent and they left boot prints in the stamped concrete and the brushed concrete. Stamping we too wet leaving ugly texture. forms on steps left ugly marks. Mata missed four appointments in one week to come and address the problem. Never called to say he wasn't coming. When he did come he said it could all be fixed. Two weeks later he had not scheduled the repair work nor responded to my calls, texts, or email. He took 90% of the agreed upon funding and has now forfeited the balance of the contract. Those funds now have to cover about 30% of the cost of redoing the stamping. Will ultimately spend as much as the higher bids I didn't take. Should have known better, Cheap is often costly and ugly. read more

Highly recommend Mata and his crew to anyone. First, Mata came out to my house 2 or 3 times due to design changes. After hearing from a neighbor that he did really good work I picked him. Him and his crew of 5+ people knocked it out of the ballpark for our house. We wanted to extend our driveway, cement the sides of our house, and cement some concrete blocks. I echo what a few other people said. I realized that there was an unsafe crack in the walkway to my entrance and wanted it fixed as soon as possible I got the estimate fast, the price was fair.
