I've had two recent projects framed by them-one a rush order which needed a super fast turnaround, and one smaller but more sentimental photo which needed a cuter frame-and each time they were knowledgeable, helpful, tasteful in helping pick out frames and mats...and also just really kind in a way I miss experiencing when I don't shop locally. I showed up right before closing (I'm so sorry!) and they still graciously took the time to help me out so I wouldn't need to make a second trip. My wife and I had two works (a poster and a print) framed at Nielsen. They came back not quite right due to matting size on one and placement of the poster in the matting on the other. When I raised the problem the owner Patrick came to our house, examined the works, and took them back to the shop. A week later they were revised at no cost and both look great. Old school service above and beyond. This is my neighborhood frame shop so when I needed a decent but inexpensive frame for my toddlers ever changing masterpiece du jour I walked down to Solano and purchased two large simple white frames. I did not, however, think about how I was going to get these large frames back to my house without a car. I could carry one but not both so I told them I would buy them but come back with my car. I had purchased one of the least expensive things you can get here but Chris offered to walk the three blocks to my house carrying the frames to save me the trip. I am a mom of a toddler and a one month old and it's so hard for me to get simple things like this done. He had no idea how helpful his offer actually was!!! As a working artist, I appreciate the effort and attention to detail Patrick, Chris, and David bring to every job I've had done there. So glad to have found this fabulous shop for framing. Ran by a team of artists, they knew exactly what's best for the artwork. They also listened to my preference, and gave their recommendations. Professional and trustworthy. The 3 artworks I brought in were large, and the turn-around period is around 5.5 weeks, which is normal, considering they have to order certain frames and materials depending on the job. I went around several other shops in SF to get price quotes and recommendations, and I'm very happy to work with Nielsen Arts for the quality and reasonable rates. I am so happy with all the framing I have had done at Nielsen Arts. I won't go anywhere else. Patrick listens very carefully to what I want and where the piece will be hung and then makes suggestions for how to frame the piece. I like to bring back various prints and fabrics from my travels, some of which are difficult to frame. For instance, I brought back a large piece of batik fabric made by the Blue Hmong tribe in Vietnam. Patrick did a marvelous job shadow-boxing the fabric and it looks wonderful. I just love his work! He really has an eye for how to enhance whatever it is you want to frame. I also had a Tibetan thangka framed and it was done so skillfully that it looks like it could be in a museum. Sometimes I think I love the frames as much as what's inside! I do recommend the museum glass--it's worth the extra cost and it looks great. read more

Today I brought two pieces in that were in need of framing and TLC. I had the pleasure to work with David, the most lovely, creative and thoughtful man. He spent a long time helping me to decide on the correct mat and frame for both pieces. A few people came in while I was working with him to pick up their finished pieces. I have had three different framing projects completed by Nielsen Arts - - 1) a copy of a vintage art piece, 2) RE-framing a picture so it would look as nice as 1), And framing a favorite album cover from the 80s. For each project the staff at Nelson spent time with me, gave me several options for frames, and worked with me on matting to pick colors and designs to make each piece look its very best. They also have a range of glass to protect and highlight the pieces. They do a fantastic job, and are true Craftsmen, treating each project ( be it small or large) with a huge amount of respect. Since I had been shopping for a nice frame for a print I had for several months, I bought the groupon/livingsocial deal when I saw it, thinking even if I didn't like them for the print, I had some smaller frames I needed too that I could get from them. I had a really good idea of pricing ahead of time due to my previous research on the frame - I knew I was going to spend between $400-600 on it. I also thought I knew what I wanted... Nielsen was a different experience though - I let him make suggestions and he went down very different paths than my previous conversations had gone at many of the other frame stores. Our print is a bit edgy and different, and we wanted something that would go well with it. He was far more creative and helpful on helping us find a great frame. We really liked what he suggested, was very patient while we played around with the idea, and quoted us a price that was very fair for a frame that we liked much better than at the other places we had been. The print is now hanging in our dining room and looks great! read more

Nearly 2 years after having gotten several pieces framed by Patrick, one of my pieces was mishandled and its glass broke. I took it in to have the glass replaced and was quoted $30-50, but when I went to pick it up the guy working said Patrick said "no charge" I was blown away!
