I was really looking forward to this visit and I'm sad that it didn't work out like I expected. I walked in and the space smelled immaculate! I was so ready for good bbq. I ended up with the brisket which was decent but the meat and rice were cold so the flavor didn't really pop as much. There was one option for BBQ sauce, I wish there was more because I ended up not liking it. It was on the sweeter side. I'd recommend asking for it on the side rather than getting it scooped on the entire bowl. The brisket portion was super generous which I was impressed by but it was hard to eat because it was in super long strips and not in bite sized portions. The plastic fork and knife provided did their best but it was a struggle trying to navigate using them with the shape of the bowl. Skip the sides. The greens tasted canned. Cornbread was soggy on the bottom and hard on the top. Mac and cheese was okay but not amazing. The entire meal felt like a strange combination of store bought sides/toppings and home cooked things. If they focused on fresher ingredients I think it would be a game changer. The concept is cool but it wasn't fully actualized. The people were 5 stars though. Very friendly and kind. We got food relatively quickly. You can eat in the restaurant but most people got their food to go while we were there. I think if I had gotten a sandwich instead, I may have had a different experience. The rice bowl with brisket was my choice because it was a crowd favorite but it just may not be for me. We are on the final leg of a road trip where we committed to eating at zero chain restaurants (a highly recommended exercise, by the way). A random online search of New Stanton brought up Big Black Grill, and it sounded perfect (and smelled perfect as we parked). It's a BBQ joint with an ordering style along the lines of Chipotle or Subway. You choose a bowl (bed of rice, etc), a sandwich, or a salad. You then choose between chicken, pulled pork, or brisket. Finally, you choose toppings and sauces. We also got some sides (green beans, mac, baked beans, and corn bread). Everything was really great, and the staff were top notch. Our 7 year old son said, "We need to go 4 hours to eat here every day." While that's not realistic, we are really glad we stopped! Thanks for a great experience! read more

We stopped on our road trip across 70. We were a bit skeptical pulling up to the front. It is a no frill bbq joint. We walked in to order at the counter. We had salad base with bbq chicken, just salad, Sliced brisket and sides, pulled pork sandwich and sides. The bbq chicken had a few pieces of fat in it, and I wish we had more options for the salad. The just salad had the only option of ranch dressing which she did not like. The brisket was good along with the mac n cheese and almond green beans. The pulled pork sandwich was good with the sides also. All drinks are in bottles or cans. The portion are large on the salads. If you are traveling trough you can not order ribs as they must be preordered. It was a bit usual to see the women making the salad with gloves hands and not using spoons. The first thing I noticed was how friendly and welcoming the staff members were. They greeted us at the entrance and took our orders immediately. The ordering counter is essentially set up like a Chipotle, where you can customize your sandwich or bowl with any toppings from cheese to coleslaw. Despite what the menu says, meals only come with one side, not two, so choose wisely! I got macaroni and cheese, which was a little cold, but still pretty good nonetheless. I really enjoyed my pulled chicken sandwich, especially with the extra barbecue sauce on top. I liked the casual atmosphere of the restaurant, and the dining area was clean. Every food tray is stamped with BBG's signature flame logo! Not a fan of their brisket. It was way too greasy and the meat tasted like it was leftover and re-heated. The bun was a generic hamburger bun. Side dishes were freshly prepared and were quite good. They have also have ribs, half chicken, and pork. I can't speak of these items because they had issues with their smoker and were not available for purchase today. Stopped here for lunch today. Does look like much but as soon as you walk in WOW you know you came to the right place. This is BBQ at it's finest. Pulled pork, brisket and chicken with all the traditional fixings. I sampled each meat before choosing the pork in a bowl. Choice of rice on the bottom and 2 sides. I added coleslaw and had a bowl of brisket chili. It was all very delicious. Even had a piece of corn bread. It was good but a little sweet for me. Everything is smoked out back each day. Service was good; the guy who filled our order tried to accommodate--in fact, offered me a sample of brisket before I made my selection. I did, in fact, order the brisket bowl with white rice, corn bread, and coleslaw. Husband ordered pork bowl with white rice and the same sides as I got. Brisket was rather greasy without a lot of flavor. Corn bread was mediocre. Coleslaw was okay. White rice was dried out. Husband's pork BBQ was a bit better but still nothing to rave about. En route, we decided to stop on New Stanton for a meal before we got back on the last leg of the trip. We analyzed the options and decided on BBG. The place was quiet but clean. The two women working the counter were incredibly friendly and showed us all of the different options. My mom and I ordered pulled chicken bowls with cheese and slaw, while my brother got a brisket sandwich. We ordered all of the sides, as well as drinks (LOTS of local root beer!). Price point was solid. The food was great! The pulled chicken and dirty rice was flavorful and the accompanying sauce was spicy. The slaws (creamy, vinegar and apple) were all fabulous. The other sides also shined: sweet potato casserole was amazing, the corn bread had chunks of real corn in it, the Mac and cheese tasted homemade, baked beans were sweet and the rosemary potatoes offset it with some savory goodness. I am from Atlanta and had to do some business here in western PA. I checked Yelp while driving back to the airport and this place came up with 4 stars. I did not want the standard fast food at the highway exits. This place was excellent! It looked like a whole in the wall and my coworker and I almost went to the Chinese place across the street but we noticed the parking lot was full. Best decision we ever made! I got the bowl with all 3 meats, pulled pork, BBQ chicken and beef brisket with the cheese topping. This was the best BBQ I have ever had especially the beef brisket. Really juicy and flavorful. Drove up here because I read some good reviews, I was a little disappointed. Only saw one car in the parking lot, I just knew I would be in for a letdown. I was looking over the menu, and it looked like everything was made into some kind of bowl or salad. What??? I asked if I could get brisket. He was a little rude saying the menu is behind him. I got a couple of slices pulled from a trough, ugh. I also got half a rack of ribs. He took exactly a half of rack of ribs from the other trough. There were chunks of onions and tomatoes on/in the rib sauce. I know I make better pork ribs. I was granted 4 sides out of the five they offer. Baked beans were terrible,Bush's beans are better. Stopped in for a quick bite at Big Black Grill. I saw a stack of wood sitting outside that they use to smoke their meat with so I figured it was worth a try. I could smell the smoke in the air and that sealed the deal...I was going in! Once inside, I noticed they had a simple menu layout similar to Chipotle. You could choose a burrito or a bowl and then choose your toppings. I chose a brisket bowl with dirty rice. There was also white rice. Then I requested BBQ sauce to keep it simple. With my bowl, I ordered two sides - sweet potato casserole and cole slaw. They had three different kinds of slaw! I went with the traditional kind, thinking, "How can I go wrong?" It turns out that the only tasty items were the smoked meat and the ultra-sugary sweet potato casserole. The rest wasn't very good, especially the cole slaw. If they reduce the amount of sugar in the sweet potato casserole, then this could be a winning side. As far as the brisket goes, it was delicious! It was tender and juice and had a good smoky flavor to it. I would recommend that they remove some of the fat however, because a lot of what I was given had a good amount of fat in it. If you're jonesing for BBQ smoked meat, you may want to try it. There is a lot of a room for improvement here though. read more
