Wanted to try some BBQ while in PA. We ordered some side dishes and nachos from this establishment. After trying BBQ all over the country, this place left us confused and a bit grossed out. The greens were totally saturated with vinegar. That was essentially the only flavor they had. I do like vinegar in my greens, but not as the first and only taste. The yams were canned and had absolutely flavor at all. Nothing. The craziest thing was the nachos. The meat was not smoked at all. It was just very dry and had no flavor. The nachos came covered with raw California vegetables. Carrots, squash, etc. We thought it was a mistake so we gave them a call. The rude individual that answered that phone kept saying " that's how people eat them in Pennsylvania." According to any other restaurant we went to... that is not the case. They didn't want to make it right with us either. Unless you want tasteless and canned.... Go somewhere else. read more

The outside of this place is fantastic if you're a plant fan! I thought I should start out with that. Cozy restaurant inside makes you feel like you stepped back in time. Our waitress was fantastic. She told us the specials and answered all of our questions about the menu. I ordered the 1/2 smoked chicken with baked beans and potato salad. The potato salad was the best! I got the Kansas City sauce and didn't think it was spicy but it tasted good. The chicken was just average, not the best not the worst. The baked beans were pretty good. Slow services and unfriendly staff with overrated bbq restaurants. Walked in and approached the cashiers, took them 15min to acknowledge my existence. Then they complained about too many take-out customers then ignored me for another 15min. Why am I still standing here? Turned my back and walked out, then one of the waitresses/cashiers said "we will be with you in just a sec" Nice enough, I gave them another chance. And another 10min passed by..... I have family in Mt Pleasant PA so visit at least once a year. I had been wanting to try Gorky's for a long while now and finally paid a visit. For starters you couldn't meet nicer people. There's a good vibe from the moment you walk through the entrance and the smells of smoked bbq drifting from the kitchen are enticing. We ordered ribs, pulled chicken and several sides. There's a wide variety of homemade BBQ sauces available. We tried three of them - Gorky's original, Carolina sauce, and the Fiery sauce. They were all good but the hot sauce could have packed a little more punch by my standards. Ribs were tender and delicious. The chicken was good, not great. As for the sides the cornbread is outrageously delicious. Runner up are the beans and chili. The only thing that failed to impress was the coleslaw, but there are probably a hundred different ways to make coleslaw. Highly recommend if you're in the area and hungry for BBQ done the old school way. Oh, and the Tshirts are epic. read more

I really enjoyed the food here. I had the elk burger and the coleslaw. Elk burger was fresh and lean, not a fan of the coleslaw as I like a thinner cabbage and more saturated with vinegar, was a little crunchier than I liked. The sauces are awesome! What a disappointment! There wasn't one other person eating there which we should of taken as a sign. I ordered beef brisket which was dry. Hardly any barbecue sauce so I needed more. 50 cents for another tablespoon. My niece got a pulled chicken sandwich that had bones in it! When we told them they says oops we probably missed it! The chunky applesauce literally had one chunk in it. And a small chunk lol! The waitress was nice that's the one star. My wife and I ate there for the first time a week or so ago on a rare date night for us. The food was, oh my God, so excellent, and very fulfilling too. I had the Blowout Burger and felt like I was on an episode of Man vs. Food. I was able to successfully eat all of my burger, but not the fries that came with it. My wife had the brisket along with the salad it came with it and she said how delicious her brisket was. It looked and smelled very delicious too. They are ripping people off by price-gouging I went to their website to order 5 Burrito's which was priced at $9.95, when I went to pick it up they had it priced at $13.95 while the menu on the counter in front of me had them printed at $11.95. I was really disappointed with the food. When I ordered the 1/2 lb brisket.. I was hoping to get brisket with a slice of bread or something. but that was it.. no sides no nothing. The brisket was a bit chewy, not tender as I would have liked it to be. We also ordered some Chicken Nachos which was okay. The smoked chicken on the nachos was great.. but the rest of the stuff was mediocre. The most disappointing part was the pasta and cheese side we ordered.. This is a duplicate for the fully named, "Gorky's Smokin Grill," for those with memory issues. The grub is good, and the ambiance is definitely country with knotty pine everywhere, and the aroma of BBQ wafting the air currents. The pork ribs are what the joint is known for, but I suggest selecting a stronger finishing sauce for the indoor caramelization just before serving. The Gorky Sauce is a bit non-descript, and as the marinade lacks punch, you really need a stronger finish. Still, a superior rib. And, the secret specialty of the house are the desserts. It was honestly a waste of $50. I was really excited to eat there beforehand but upon getting home and opening the food I immediately regretted it. The pulled pork sandwich looked and tasted old. AVOID! Food is AWFUL!!! This restaurant has absolutely no idea how to make southern style food. To top it off, the order was incorrect and I was so sickened by the site of the disgusting, slimy, skin covered smoked chicken that was supposed to be sans sauce, I just returned it instead of getting a replacement. I got a little bit of the barbecue sauce from the chicken on my finger so I tasted it. It tasted like some sort of watered down redhot sauce with tomato soup added to it. No spice. No sweet. Having lived in St. Louis, I know good bbq sauce and whatever they're calling sauce would offend anybody who's attended Rib Fest. The collard greens taste like bitter vinegar. Nothing else - just bitter vinegar. I tried to fix them by simmering on the stove with two cloves of fresh chopped garlic, a ton of black pepper, a large amount of Jane's Krazy Mixed-up Seasoning's salt and a Tbsp of Bragg Liquid Aminos to no avail. Nothing could cut through the vinegar. There was no spice flavor at all, just vinegar. Where did this place learn to make collard greens??? The steamed vegetables were good and my friend got the Blowout Burger which she said was good. In conclusion, the food was awful, a waste of money and an experience I will never repeat. Shoot, I could blow this place out of the water with the bottled bbq sauce from my favorite place in St. Louis. UPDATE: My friend let me try the Blowout Burger. In my opinion, it is horrible. Hmmm. My boyfriend and I came here because we are not from the area, we were starved and there wasn't much else around. We waited 5 minutes to be seated, as it was a full house. There were 2 tables open, but there was only 2 waitresses and both were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Once seated, we waited about 5 minutes for menus and then another 10 minutes for someone to take our drink order. It took our food awhile, but once it arrived, my charbroiled burger was good. My fries were limp and greasy. I ate maybe 5 fries. My boyfriend enjoyed his burger and ribs. We never got drink refills. This place was very clearly understaffed. Our waitress stated multiple times she was exhausted, hadn't sat down in hours, her feet were swollen, etc. She was not shy about letting us know she was being overworked. Gorky's has no clue what BBQ is. Quick summary. Went for lunch got the 1/4 rack of ribs and 1 meat. Meat was brisket. No sides. Got the Gorky's sauce and the KC BBQ sauce to try. Got back to eat and opened brisket. IT WAS SITTING IN Au Jus. Absolutely no smoke or rub on the meat. It was fatty thin sliced Prime Rib. Dipped in sauce. Couldn't tell the difference between the 2. SImple, basic ketchup based sauces. Now, I try the ribs. Got 3 LONG full of cartlidge Country ribs. I dont expect baby backs, but not even St Louis style. They were the cheapest country style ribs possible. No rub, barely a hint of smoke. Most of ribs was cartilage so maybe got 1 and half ribs to eat. In summary, this place is trash BBQ. No no no-hardly any meat and we would need a saw to get it off the bone. Huge disappointment. We had one and a half nibbled at before we had to speak up. We went for dinner. I had the grilled sausage sandwich with coleslaw and steamed vegetables. It would have been better on better bread but it was still flavorful. Friendly relaxed atmosphere. No liquor license but coming soon. However they're happy to let you BYOB. There are about 8-10 sides to choose from. Portions are adequate but not excessive. Prices are cheap. The coleslaw has no mayo & is tangy & crisp. The sweet potatoes are super hot and nicely sweetened. Would love to go back and try some other things. They have many homemade desserts (that we didn't try), incluuding key lime pie. There's a big smoker and grill right outside. Would definitely go again.
