This is the most expensive vintage store in Austin. In my opinion it's a bit overpriced by *local* standards, and some items from the 80s onward are overpriced, period. I never got a snooty vibe from them, but I understand why the average local shopper would feel uncomfortable here. Austin is a town where 60s poly blend dresses, 70s pearlsnaps, and 80s cutoff denim shorts (often scored for under $30) drive the local vintage industry...Big Bertha's simply isn't that kind of place. Instead this shop is comparable to the more expensive vintage stores of Southern California such as Gollyester; it's very LA in terms of selection and pricing. Consequently, you can expect a curation of scarcer, fine quality things - often with designer labels. If money is no object you won't regret going in. The owner has fabulous taste! And he's been in business for years, so he's obviously filling a niche. read more

Iv driven by so many times and FINALLY got a chance to stop and check it out. OMG A Totally awesome little store. The store is small but packed full of some truly awesome pieces. So.... this is the first time in my life someone has ever asked me to leave their store. I went in there with my husband and immediately found a few great dresses to try on. The owner (Henry, I think?) piled more and more dresses into my arms ("Could you be this kind of woman?" *holds up rabbit hair dress*) before I escaped to the dressing room with my husband. After several minutes Henry asked how we were doing and I said "I haven't found anything yet" because the two dresses I had tried on so far -- that Henry had picked out -- were too big. Every few minutes after that Henry would yell to us in the dressing room, "Are you alive in there?.... You're taking long enough... Okay, time's up, hurry up." After trying on seven dresses (only one fit well) we left the dressing room and Henry immediately says "You can go now, please leave my store." My husband and I left and just looked at each other, totally confused. I can only guess that the first time he checked up on us and I said I hadn't found anything yet, he took it personally and didn't want us there. Long story long, he has great PRICY dresses but if you go in and don't like what he picks out/buy anything he will act all offended and insult you. read more

My friend and I came in the other day with my infant daughter and immediately started convulsing over all the amazing vintage and designer confections! I came in after passing this place for several years thinking it was a costume shop. As I'm looking for stores to find cool vintage designer pieces, i see them. I decide to check it out and regret it. I walk in and say hi to the people that work there and they glance at me and ignore me. I assumed they were just busy so I didn't let it bother me and I start looking through the racks. I find a gorgeous 90s John galliano dress that looks similar to one I've been looking for for a while now. I pick it up with the intent to try it on and love it and purchase it and continue to look through the clothing. As I'm flipping through the racks, one of the workers picks it out of my hand and goes Isn't this vintage galliano beautiful? Do you know how much it costs? And I say "yes..." and they respond with "it's $700. Does that work for you" and I say yes I've been looking for a vintage galliano dress like this forever. And they continue to tell me the price and "make sure I can pay that" several times. I thought it was strange since NO ONES ever asked me that in a vintage designer store and I'm also wearing head to toe Margiela. I go to try it on and hear how SWEET the workers are being to the 2 other guests in the store (wearing tacky Loud designer like LV and other logomania brands) They're helping them find things they'd like, complimenting them, talking about other designers, etc. I try on the dress and it fits me perfectly. I love it. I was planning to buy it until I thought about my morals. Am I really going to give $700 to the people who treated me like I couldn't afford designer? I definitely look young but I work in the fashion industry. I have worked with designers you have on your racks. I told them the dress didn't fit me and they respond with "Too expensive huh?" I say thank you and leave and mourn the loss of the beautiful 90s galliano dress I yearned for but don't regret not giving money to those people. I absolutely love this place - it is a treasure trove of high end vintage pieces, including clothing, swimsuits, accessories, jewelry, (omg the jewelry, I can't evennnn.) There are so many amazing glittery things to ogle in the shop - any time I've gone in, my mouth hangs open half the time because each and every piece Henry has curated is unique and show-stopping. Both John and Henry are lovely and personable, and they clearly have an incredible eye for fashion. They are both people who push the (fashion) envelope in the most exciting way. I think its great that Austin has a store for high end vintage. Its not my fave high end vintage store in town (Amelia's) but I love when you can go into a store and dig through things and still be tempted to buy almost everything. Henry is indeed a fashion/style genius, and a brilliant shopper. He has some insane (wonderful) contemporary true designer pieces as well as thoughtfully selected true vintage and exotic pieces. This is NOT one of those 70s/80s college student "vintage" stores with horrible poly dresses no one wants. Big Bertha's is great for occasion dressing. Great men's selection too! Where to start? I love this place. It's hard to describe this tucked-away consignment store near the S. Lamar Alamo Drafthouse, but it looks like what you would imagine an aging movie star's dressing room to look like. It has this wonderful smell, too - not the musty, dusty smell normally associated with thriftstores, but more like...the smell of history. (Err...) The owner, Henry, had me try on the craziest dresses - from a 50's midnight blue gown to a gorgeous, crotcheted authentic flapper dress. I finally ended up with a great Moschino dress (and my friend a Nicole Miller!) but honestly, you can find the perfect dress for anything here...though most of them were much too theatrical for plain-jane me. I saw an Oscar de la Renta dress here for 60 dollars here, and just this fact made all my friends desperate to go here. What can I say? This place is one of Austin's little-known treasures. All other vintage shops will leave you yearning for Big Bertha's. read more

Located in the same plaza as Alamo Drafthouse on S. Lamar. I would suggest heading over there while you are waiting for a movie to start the next time you are in that area. Big Bertha's isn't in a basement, it isn't a rock bottom bargain price type place, but their selection and staff make it a rock solid place to go for finding unique vintage pieces. They had several vintage designer pieces, clothing, shoes, furniture and a small selection of jewelry. It is definitely on my vintage store go-to list! read more

Oh Lordy. In a city that has such stellar vintage there is a printed pamphlet and map directing you to these locations...make sure to hit the whole street. Don't be disappointed this is not in a basement but you will experience fair pricing (no it's not cheap- there are cheaper places) on nearly new design finds. Spotted prada and Dior never worn shoes. I snagged an one of a kind necklace and a brand new swisher bag. The shop owner is a hilarious delight. Enjoy this store. Try on and smile. I'm not a vintage expert....I don't have the patience to thoroughly browse the racks. Plus being a larger than average girl vintage stores don't usually have anything to offer me anyways. I've stopped in this store a few times to browse around but things that I wanted were just too expensive. I brought some of my grandmothers things in to sell and Henry bought some items but didn't give me much and grouped in some clothes that I don't think were considered for a total. I was buying a dress that I saw in there so I was bringing him business. He didn't give me a discount off even though the dress had some repairs in the fabric that still showed. So if you are selling, I'd go someplace else if you want to get more than a couple dollars for each item. If you are looking for something different and don't mind paying more than what it should be check this place out. Every item has a story even though he doesn't know what it is. Like the swimsuit I sold him that was worn in the Miss San Antonio pageant in 1951 that she won, it didn't matter. It's a small store with low overhead so the prices aren't the reason for the overpriced clothing but the items are very nice. read more

Had some really well preserved items from the 70s and 80s that I wanted to sell but the person in charge was very abrupt in telling me my things weren't fancy enough...even after I brought in several outfits...he seemed bothered that I'd come in. I left before showing him the other items I brought. I live North and it was a far drive to go to be cast off as if I couldn't possibly have anything of value. Make sure you know what their definition is of "vintage" becaues it really is a matter of taste and your age. Boots,Baubles, Boas, and Bliss! I chanced upon this little bit of heaven while on a Sunday stroll with my best friend. We popped our heads into this sweet shop and were swept into a magical wonderland of fashion and fun. The proprietor Henry greeted us with enthusiasm as he whirled around the store grabbing only the finest fashions for adornment. We put on our own funky fashion show laughing and playing for what seamed like hours. On every trip out of the plush little dressing room I was greeted by and donned in perfectly styled accessories. The BEST I have found in Austin. Not only the selection is fabulous, the owner has an impeccable taste for his items. If you know fashion and appreciate vintage, you won't even look at the ticket price. This is a Paradise for the BergdorfGoodman, Saks and Neiman Marcus shoppers. im giving 3 stars as the merchandise is lovely. i picked out 5 skirts to try on the guy immediately held one up and said this is 600. i was like ok i wont try that one. i considered asking him if mentioning money wasnt a little crass? one skirt fit, he was claiming it was dior but there was no label inside. i told him straight i didnt really want to pay 230 for an item i have no clue is genuine, i might actually have got it if i hadnt felt obliged to take out my money and count it in front of him to prove i could afford to pay for it! read more

Wow when me and 2 of my friends went in there we quickly noticed some unique stuff. We loved a lot of things but they were really expensive. Well there's more..my other two friends took photos of them being silly wearing some hats when Henry I believe, said "hey no pictures!" Three times and really fast. man i love this place! When i was shopping for my prom dress, i almost opted for a very expensive marc by marc jacobs dress i had my eye on, but then i went here and i ended up with the most awesome dress evarrrr! walking into this place is like taking a time machine back a few decades and landing in the coolest, hippest chicks closet. Some of their stuff can be pricey, but it should be! for instance i found a vintage chanel jacket there, which i would have purchased in a heartbeat if i had the money. but they also have great affordable, and still beautiful, vintage finds. My prom dress, along with petticoat only ended up costing me around $80 bucks. And when i went to prom, i saw a girl wearing the marc jacobs dress i had considered, but not a single person in a dress even similar to mine. they also have a great sale rack with less formal things, i got a really awesome tank top for about $20, and i wear it all the time. i suggest this place to anyone who has a unique style, or if you are needing a cool dress for an event but want to make sure you don't look like anyone else. you are sure to find something here! read more
