I appreciate management for having security on lock. Besides that man they have some good prices! Wish it was closer to where I live but I was really digging the store. First things first. You cannot rank Big Bear against other, major, brand name chain grocery stores. You can't even expect that sort of experience when you walk into its doors. If you're over a certain age and were born and raised in the South, chances are you had a discount grocery store like Big Bear somewhere in or near your 'hood. If your family wasn't able to afford a lot of fresh produce or meats, chances are you shopped at a store like Big Bear growing up. For that reason, I consider the store something of a cultural throwback. It's very popular with 'West-End-ian' seniors who are on restricted incomes - it's a place where they can make their dollar stretch. It's a treat to be able to rub elbows with the seniors there, even though they can git a little ornery if you take too much time at the often-crowded produce section. My personal recommendation? Shop the outside aisles only - meat, produce, some frozen goods - as the products there are significantly cheaper than you will find ANYWHERE else in the city. You won't find exotic offerings here either - just the basics. So fill your basic meat and produce needs at Big Bear and do the rest of your shopping at a big box grocer. The amount you'll save on the Big Bear items makes it worth 2 stops to complete your grocery list. If "female food stampers" (as reviewer David K. so tolerantly describes the patrons there) unnerve you or make you feel a little too self-conscious about your obvious privilege, then it might be best for you to avoid this place. Perhaps you're better off going somewhere where shopping is a pleasure, instead of somewhere were you'll actually have to engage with people who may be of a different gender, color, or socioeconomic background than you are. read more

I actually enjoy this supermarket, albeit old and dingy. I've been a patron here for many years. They have 12 pack Faygo colas and DIET Faygo cola, my favorites. The only place in Atlanta that I know of that carries them. Some of the meat can be pretty sketchy or is it because the meat coolers look terrible? They always have fresh turkey wings and a big section of smoked meats. I do buy chicken breasts here because they are small sized and well priced but I have to be picky because sometimes they don't look "right". The real star is the vegetables. They have snap beans, okra, collards, fresh herbs, etc, reasonably priced. This is the ONLY place I buy sweet potatoes from. I love sweet potatoes! I'm always amazed at how much food I have for so little money when I'm at the register. I support this store because they are smack dab In the middle of the hood in a food desert. While there is a big chain grocery closer to me, I will always support this store for the service they provide the West End neighborhood. read more

I love Big Bear! I drive cross country to shop there because it's worth it! I get fresh meats and produce. The store has been clean and neatly organized during each of my visits. The cashiers are exceptionally pleasant. They don't roll there eyed when I approach their lane with my basket overflowing. They seem to appreciate the fact that I chose "their" store above all others. My totals with everything in tow, cheat treats included, is always less than I anticipated. So this store is... interesting. Let me just start off by telling you that this is the store you'll go to when you wanna make soul food. Seriously. I really only ended up here because I needed a couple items for a recipe I was trying and didn't feel like driving all the way to space to get them. This is literally about a 2 or 3 minute drive from my house so I thought I should give it a go, and keep money circulating in my neighborhood at the same time. The produce section is tiny (actually, the whole store is kindof small), and filled with things you see on a Southern Sunday dinner table. They even sell the butter equivalent of "government cheese" lol. I just found that amusing. It could be cleaner, but perhaps it looks more dingy than it is because it's been around since Moses parted the Red Sea and they haven't updated it since. It provided me with what I needed though. I might go back and have a more thorough walk-through one of these days, just to get a better guage of what I can grab in a hurry. read more

Big Bear is the best. It's super convenient when you want to run in and buy enough items for dinner. The butcher counter is unbeatable and I always find super great deals and delicious cuts. The produce is great too and usually it's in-house packaged. I've never had a problem with their staff being discourteous, on the contrary, people are always super nice and helpful. Big Bear feels like a small town country store from years past. I really enjoy supporting local mom and pop establishments and with these prices and convenience, it's hard to beat. sort of like save-a-lot, but with known brands. Ordinary prices, lower than Kroger or publix. They do have some deals going on like a regular market, not as many as I've seen in publix circular (i.e. Buy one get one free deals) however they're not as large of a chain. The produce was priced decently and looked better than the west end save a lots and mlk Walmart (which is getting better, the GM is there often) anywho, I'll post my receipt. Good service. I encourage the locals to shop here. They have a small beer and spirits selection (all refrigerated). I think there was a butcher. All in all decent market, I do recommend, and I'll be returning of course. read more

German chocolate cake at $2. That is my highlight for Big Bear. The produce is hit or miss. If I do just need one or two things, I will stop there but I really do hate that place. Can you say diabetes? They carry a lot of very nasty food products laden with high fructose corn syrup and other crap. I would not recommend this place for real grocery shopping unless you are trapped which I think a lot of their customers are which is why they just keep their shelves stocked with CRAP. They have a big opportunity to serve the neighborhood and fill in where Kroger drops the ball but the owners don't care. You can tell from the inside and the outside of the building. They do have herbs which is awfully nice of them and probably the only place in the West End to cop some for cheap. read more

This place is what it is , its The Local Chain Grocerry store unlike Krogers they have only 2 locations I usually go to the one on James P Brawdley never been to the one out in Decatur but I can say this is my 2nd choice from Kroger being its soo close to home and the prices aren't too bad , yes they do need to keep it a little more clean . read more

I love Big Bear for its fruit and veggies. I like to juice and do smoothies in my Nutribullet, and it allows me to get so many fruits and veggies for about a week or two, for under 20 dollars. If I'm buying in bulk, I won't go anywhere else. read more

I purchased fruit from Big Bear on Sunday, April 1st (nectarines, mangos, blue berries, and strawberries. On Monday, April 2nd, I prepared my lunch using the berries in a salad and decided to take a nectarine as a snack. Once I took a bite out of the nectarine, it was brown inside (hindsight is the reason they were 5 for a $1.) On Tuesday, April 3rd, I returned to Big Bear where I purchased the nectarines only to be told that I had three days to return anything once I purchased it. Since I did not have my receipt, the manager said I could not return the items. Remind you, we are talking about $1. Where I actually spent $30 on my visit. REALLY!!!! I am going to cut each one and send photo to the appropriate authorities to see what can be done. I live in East Point, GA and traveled to get to Big Bear because I used to work in the area. read more
