I love Big 5! I had spent the last 3 weeks looking for work boots. I finally remembered to try Big 5 so I went and within the first 10 minutes of being there, found the right work boots, with the right size for a really good price! I also found the socks I'd been looking for for a great price, too! Dillon helped me and he is awesome! He knows the merchandise and is really just great to work with! So thankful for him! He, in fact, was the one who made the work boot recommendation and I love them!! From now on, Big 5 is the first place I'll go for my sporting, outdoor gear!! read more

While other staff were accommodating and welcoming, after being asked by Mikey (who was very kind) if we "needed any help" we were, what I can only describe as accosted, by who I presume is the manager of the establishment (tucked in dress shirt, older, noticeably hiding agitation) He burst through the a door behind us and barely hiding his suspicion, in a stern tone said "do you guys need any help?" at us after we were attempting to realign a product we knocked over. Mind you, we were carrying product that we purchased shortly after but for whatever reason this gentleman found it necessary to march out and essentially throw a thinly veiled accusation at us. It's very clear he thought we were attempting to shoplift and without valid reason. I implore that this person do better in the future. I won't be returning to this store and will be telling others about my experience here. read more

Sadly we came to Big 5 to purchase some fishing supplies. While they do have a fishing equipment department, the inventory was very low. They did not have any leadcore line and had very limited choices of needle fish. We are right in the middle of fishing season and it would be nice to see a sporting good's store with a decent amount of inventory. The sales associate in the front of the store greeted us when we arrived and wished us a good day. This store is located in a large shopping center with plenty of parking even though it is a busy parking lot. read more

Some of the laziest workers I've ever encountered run this store. I called the location to see if an item was in stock and was reassured that it was. The reason I don't give this place 1 star is because it is across the street from my work so I can walk there on lunch. Staff stands around and talks while customers are obviously looking for some help. Same thing today, needed some shoes and saw they had a sale so I went in. I was greeted, welcome...after I was well past the cashier who greeted me. Got back to the shoes in this tiny overcrowded store. Saw some that fit the need and not the size....tic-toc...no one around, but I heard them. Walked over to another area, three guys included what I would think was the manager. Knives: The associate at the knife counter has been patient with me. He has helped me 3 times on separate occasions while I inspect their Kershaws, Gerbers, Browning, CRKT, S&W, H&K/Benchmade and Buck folding and fixed blade knives. The prices are high if you don't wait for a sale or a coupon. Often you can buy the same knife online for less. But Big5's advantage is they let you physically check out the item. The problem sometimes is they don't have the stock. For weeks I have been looking for the Kershaw Volt 2 which is an excellent assisted opening folder but they have not gotten any in for a while. Baseball/softball: Good selection of helmets in a wide range of price points. They are on the top shelf along the wall so you need to ask an associate for help. There are average types of bats. Baseballs and softballs are reasonably priced. Firearms: The selection is waning. I get a sense they are going to stop selling rifle caliber firearms and just sell .22lr and shotguns. Weekly ads don't have any guns advertised anymore. Ammunition is available if you need a non-popular caliber. Pistol calibers are in high demand and they are no where to be found. Apparel: Good selection of workout gear from good brands such as Under Armour, Nike, etc. Tennis: They sell balls and rackets but they don't string them. Fitness Equipment: They sell the smaller types of muscle resistance (dumb bells, bands, gimmicky gadgets) and cardio equipment like you see in infomercials. They don't carry any full size gym equipment. Miscellaneous: They also sell camping gear, sport watches, toys that have an outdoor purpose like RC helicopters, frisbees, boomerangs, kites, etc. The flashlight selection is not great. They sell average light duty lights. read more

I gotta pile on with Carson's review here. I went to Big 5 to outfit my kids with snow gear. You know, boots, pants, gloves, jackets, hats, etc. The store was virtually empty. I asked a salesgirl for help with my purchases. Me - "Where are the childrens snow pants?" Girl - "Over there." [points] Me - [walks over to where she pointed] "Where over here?" Girl - "On the rack." Me - [looking at about 5 different racks] "Uh, which rack?" Girl - "The bottom one." Me - "Uh, OK what do you recommend?" Girl - "Everything we have is there." Not wanting to play 20 questions with her for the wardrobe of clothes I needed, I left. Besides, they only had about 5 different pairs of pants on the childrens rack so there was no selection at all. If you are looking for anything higher end it is probably better to go somewhere that specializes in the sport you are looking for. I went into this location a couple of days ago to purchase an inflatable mattress for my wife and I for an upcoming camping trip. After I found what I needed, I then went over to the firearm area to look and possibly make a purchase. There was one gentleman who was overlooking some paperwork- I figured he would acknowledge me at some point. Less than 15 seconds later, another young man went behind the counter and the two engaged in conversation. I stood there for a whole minute and NEITHER one of them acknowledged my presence or asked if they could help me. A simple 'Good morning, we will be right with you' would have been sufficient- but I didn't have to be in there. So I later purchased the same item I was looking at from a different business and their service was much more efficient than Big 5. read more

I am so not a sport/athletic person so I do not come here much nor do I know much about any of their products or prices. That said, unathletic me strangely agreed to run in a 10k in a few months so I needed some decent shoes to run (let's face it, most likely power walk) in for great distances. My boyfriend's mom knows running shoes and knew Big 5 was having a sale on some of them (apparently they always do) so here we are. We mostly helped ourselves, looking at shoes (her the quality, me the colors), occasionally asking the sales associate roaming the section to look in the back for more sizes. He was nice, but didn't really seem knowledgeable about the products. My boyfriend's mom asked for a certain style and a certain color and he said they didn't make them in that color. She was wearing them though, just needed some that weren't worn out. That said, I found some shoes (added some green laces to pretty them up) and were out! The man at the register was friendly. Manager was very rude. Went in to get an FSC, even before asking about it. One guy (did not get his name) asked "What do you guys want?". Not even a good morning or anything. Then I asked if I can do the test for the FSC. His answer was "Only if your buying for us, I'm the only manager here and I don't have time to do the test for everyone because they are too lazy to do so, go to Turner's, they can do it for you." This review is for 06/17/2011. Well, it looks like Friday was GREAT FRIDAY. I got promoted at work and it looked like my Dodger ticket that I bought a week before was a great way to celebrate. Since I only had a Dodger shirt, why not get a Dodger Cap at the local Big 5 Sporting Goods Store. After learning about my promotion just before lunch, I didn't feel like eating so I went on to Big 5 at McBean and Magic Mountain Parkway. It is located near the El Pollo Loco and Target on the lot. I arrived around 12:15pm and I was going to look for a hat until a Big 5 Employee asked what I was searching for right at the entrance. Not bad. I don't just window shop. I seek and destroy....I mean I seek, buy and get out fast. The employee directed me to the caps and there they were. New ERA Baseball Caps. I got myself a Blue & White and a Black & White LA Cap ($12.99 sale). Still cheaper to get it at the store than to get it at Dodgers Stadium with their financial mess. As I was headed to checkout, it was a long line of women. I thought I saw guys in here. Did they all turn into older women? I guess I'll save this story for another time, but WOW. I waited in line for one cashier for about 5-7 minutes. There was another female employee just hanging around and I wish she would open her register. It was my turn and the employee rung up my items. I had a 10% off for Weekly E-Members. Sign up for that. One hat was $11.69 and the other was $12.99. My total with tax $27.09. This Big 5 Sporting Goods Store had a different demographic of customers, but maybe it was because I was going during my lunch hour. Bring your $10 off coupon. That makes your purchase even more fun. I always find good deals here. Don't have high expectations when you go in so you are not disappointed. It is hit or miss but you can always find the basics. Your good if you find your shoe size. I buy two the same when I luck out on a very low priced pair that are pretty good . Who knows what they will have. Lot's of discounts and good sales. The watches are amazing. Always had a good experience here. The place is cramped and the service is at the front counter but I always know my way around the Big 5 shops as I've been a customer since I was a kid. They have a pretty good selection of almost anything you'll need for camping, sports or other athletic activities. On my most recent visit I bought a backpack for my laptop. They're in the target shopping center, so there's usually a lot of parking spots, but a little bit to walk. They have the usual selection of clothes, shoes, tennis, baseball, basketball, football, golf, weights, fishing, fitness, etc. Whenever I go in for their advertised shoe specials, they never seem to have my size, or the shoe on ad. Oh well, they haven't changed in all these years, so I expect it. But since sports chalet is gone, their main competition is dick's sporting goods. I'll have to try them next for shoes. Sometimes the staff is there to help, and most of the time they're up front checking out the customers. But they seem friendly enough. And they let you know when you walk in the store at night and they tell you they're closing in twenty minutes! read more

Stopped by on our way to Target to see if they have any affordable tennis rackets as I have the worst hand-eye coordibation in the the world and feel bad really investing in something that might be a passing whimsy...soooo.... Walked in and found this Big 5 is much smaller than the Big 5 of my younger days, and even though it is cramped enough to make even a sardine feel claustrophobic, the selection is pretty decent and there is a nice range of price points represented. Things are clearly marked, items are well stocked and easy to find, staff is pleasant but hands-off, and many items are priced similar to or a bit better than competitors. read more

This five star review goes out to Chris, the Store Manager. I went in last week to buy some Saucony Grid Stratos tennis shoes. They didn't have my size so Chris told me that they were expecting a shipment mid-week. He wrote out a raincheck with the sale price of the shoes and told me to expect a call when they came in. By Friday I hadn't heard anything but was in the neighborhood so I stopped by the store. The assistant manager or whoever SHE was informed me that if I didn't get a call, they hadn't come in. Chris quietly took my slip of paper and murmured that the employees didn't always check the raincheck list. He came back with both pairs of shoes and told the check-out counter staff to ring it up at the sales price. In a world of mediocrity, Chris YOU ARE WONDERFUL! Made my day. Standing in the store as I'm typing this. The person that I'm assuming was the store manager was very rude. My dad and I had a genuine, innocent question: "Would we be able to pay for an item that is out of stock at this location and pick it up at a different location that does have it?" It didn't hurt to ask but this manager had the audacity to laugh at us and ridicule us to another employee like we weren't standing right in front of them. He was unbelievably condescending. I have gone here several times for outdoor equipment and also gun equipment. I've noticed that many of their products are wayyy overpriced, so I haven't purchased certain products there for that reason. However, when I bought hiking shoes there, the sales associate and the store manager were super helpful and patient with me, and even recommended great hiking socks to go with my shoes. I also wish the store was a little less messy. It feels a bit sloppy and cramped. read more

My tent pole cracked, and I needed to replace one section of the pole. Darrel, the store manager, went out of his way to help me replace the broken pole right there in the store. We had the pole stretched out across the store floor away from foot traffic. He spent a good 20 minutes with me trying to help me make it right. I really appreciate him taking the time to help me. The store was very busy on a Friday holiday weekend. I have bought many camping supplies from Big 5 and will continue to support the store.
