Fun place. But then I am a jock, fan and enthusiast. In fact, when I go in this store just to look, I always came out with way more than I needed, dropping a couple hundred easy. My family and I were out shopping for rollerblades and roller skates today. While looking for the right sizes for my boys we realized that the boxes are tape shut. I went to find an employee and ask if it's okay to open the box . As I rounded the corner heading into the shoe department I found three employees two guys standing talking to a gal who was sitting in the seats available for the customers buying shoes. I asked if I may open the box so they can try them on. One of the employees answers yes that's fine you may use these seats while you are trying on skates. I explained the boxes were taped shut, he responded he could get scissors . The gal sitting immediately barks out,"we don't have scissors". (Really , you receive all sorts of boxed and packaged items that need to be opened and displayed in the store). While we continue to look for skates no one during this time makes an effort to check if we need any help. Not even the gal when she came over by wear we were shopping, not a word ! She was literally with in a foot from me, said nothing. As I then watched one of the guys I spoke to a moment ago walking a customer across the store to assist the with what the want. We bring our boxes over to where you try on shoes no one comes over to assist us. I ended up using my own knife to get the boxes open. We select to pair of skates make our way to the register, I ask the employees about the scissors. And explained no one ever made any effort to help us open the boxes. "Yea everything that we have is out on the floor. Oh are you shopping our store online?" she asked as she rudely looked at my phone invading my privacy. "No I was looking at helmets on amazon because.... well....." your selection sucks I said in my head. "Okay well I also need some shoes that would be good for standing on all day" "yea, if you go to footwear And ask.... I know nothing about shoes" she said snarkily. so I go to the dude that is standing there with his thumb up his ass and seems to be stoned or day-sleeping on his feet. Worst Big 5 Experience ever, our flight was delayed so we got into town late. We walked into the Store at 7:52p where I was greeted with "you know were closing at 8" I needed to buy tennis shoes for me and my 3 kids. I was looking for shoes and was asked if I needed help and was told again that they were closing. Then my wife was separate from me in the store and the cashier once again told her they were closed at 8:01pm. We were being kicked out for wanting to spend money, we also needed to purchase chairs as we couldn't bring them on the plane for our baseball tournament. Don't waste your time shopping here ever. Meh, regular sports store. Just came in looking for some camping gear. Sometimes they have good sales at Big 5 but not this time. Store just opened but the worker didn't seem to happy to be there. Place seems dingy and old. I asked my daughter to go price check something but was scared cause she said the same worker was mean. No other associates were around. Left with nothing. We shop Big 5 frequently and have very little complaints about the company but the two lady employees bitching about a rude customer asking for the price of a product was ridiculous. Overhearing their conversation literally made me put down an item I had a question about. The ladies even walked away from the gun counter as we approached to continue their conversation at the register. Thankfully another employee came out from the back to assist us there. read more

I gotta say the experience I had with big 5 was just made better, i came in on 12/23/21 I was looking for a warm and fashionable gift for my boo and sure enough a nice young lady by the name of kenadee shown me the sherpy and a nice add on gift of the blendjet and I had to treat myself so I got myself a watch I got immaculate costumer service and I left within 5 minutes. Talk about efficiency, I don't know how much she makes but I believe she should be paid more for her efforts. read more

I had recently purchased a ball from this store. I had called ahead of time to see if I would be able to exchange the ball due to it deflating the very first day we used the ball and has a hole. It is for my 4 year old son. I was told over the phone I would be able to exchange it for another one, without a reciept. However when I got there in the store Henry told me the exact opposite I would not be able to return it because it was used and I needed a receipt. I asked why I was told i was able to over the phone he said he wouldn't be able to without proof of the purchase all over a $20 ball I just bough. Very upset with his customer service. read more

Big Five's been around since I was a little kid, and they've always provided a decent selection of sporting goods, whether it's for golf, yoga, or target shooting. They always have some specials running in their paper ads, and I like the mom-and-pop feel of this place. We went here recently and received excellent customer service from the assistant manager. Unbelievably rude customer service by the heavyset guy who appeared to be the manager at 9:35 AM on Dec.14, 2020. I have never made a complaint about customer service in my long life. As the heavyset guy adjusted a sign on the front door, I said politely, "Excuse me." He responded rudely that he was busy, and he walked away. I blew it off. No big deal. After I found what I wanted, I went to the cashiers desk to make my purchase. The heavyset guy was observing as a cute girl helped a customer make a purchase. I said gently, "Excuse me." He responded angrily that time: "I told you to wait a minute. I'm helping this customer." (that was five minutes earlier) There was not a trace of anger in my voice when I replied, "Ok, it looked like you were just standing there. I didn't know you were busy." Again he replied angrily, "Why do you think I'm standing here? I'm helping this customer." I gently set the product on the counter, and as I walked out the door, I said, "Wow! I can't believe you are so rude." He answered, "I can't believe you are so rude." I continued to walk out without another word. I have shopped at BIG 5 SPORTING GOODS many times over the years, but never again. read more

If I could give less stars I would. I was looking for soccer gear, which I believe a sports store in Arizona would carry year round. Clearly I was not finding what I was looking for and I was looking for somebody to help me. I was about to make my way to the register to go find someone when my girlfriend pointed out that the lady who looked like a customer that had looked at me a couple times did in fact work there. I asked her for the products I was looking for and without looking at all shrugged me off and told me they don't carry it. I was looking for soccer goalie gloves in a sport equipment store. My husband said to him " is this the knife I was looking at in this box" we were about to buy it and the guy says" I'll take it out and show you if you don't believe me" real SNOTTY! I've been coming here for years, maybe even a decade by now. This sporting good store always seems to have what I'm looking for just like any other big box sporting good store, but this spot has a mom-and-pop feel to it when you go inside. The staff are we seem friendly and they take Apple pay at the register which is nice. Besides the parking lot needing to be repaved sooner rather than later, there is really nothing bad about this store. read more

Have shopped at Big 5 for over 10 years. Big selection, bit over priced. Staff seems to know just enough to show you where item is, but no more then that. Such a shame. Just had an incredibly unpleasant customer service interaction at this location. Having lost my receipt I attempted to exchange an item I had purchased for store credit. At the store I was told different policies by two different employees that both turned out to be partially incorrect. I was told that there was absolutely no way to look up my transaction from only five days earlier without my receipt (I was later told by two different managers that this is not true). The second employee also gave this information to me in a condescending and unprofessional manner. Her attitude caused me to leave and attempt to resolve the issue later. So shortly after I called the store manager to determine what the real policy was because of the multiple different stories I had received in person. First he said something along the lines of "well maybe you should've kept your receipt" as if it wasn't a genuine accident on my part to have lost it. Clearly I had not purposely gotten rid of it. The manager also must have already heard about the interaction from his employees because he assumed that I was mad without me ever saying so. I told him that I didn't understand why he had immediately been so aggressive with me over the phone. He just began arguing that he was not being rude to me. As someone who has worked in many customer service positions in the past I would never try to tell my customer that I'm not being rude. If a customer perceives it there's obviously something different that a manager should be doing to effectively communicate with him/her. I've had nothing but pleasant experiences at every other Big 5 location, so I suppose I will just need to stop visiting this one for the sake of my sanity.
