I'm writing this review because uive been to this store location several times in the past and i have had similar experiences. I'll say that not ALL of my experiences have been bad, but when it has been bad, the sole problem has been the customer service. i shop at Big 5 on a regular basis, in elk grove, in sacramento, in antioch (pittsburg), in brentwood, and lots of other locations also. i appreciate their selections of merchandise, and alot of times their pricing also. Most of the stores I patronize, you can tell there is an emphasis on customer service. Thats not the case at the Mack road location. It's almost like they are insulted that you are shopping there. Today I took part in their 1 day deal for ammo. They had a really good deal for defense ammo, so I initially went to the elk grove location. At elk grove, they had the 9mm ammo but they were out of the 45. ****as i am writing this, California is under a court order to NOT conduct any background checks for ammo purchases. The previous law, which was found to violate the constitution, has been struck down. I travel from elk grove to the mack road store, which is about 4 miles away. I walk in, no one greets me. I walk over to the ammo counter, there's no one there. My friend asks the cashier in the front if they didn't mind retrieving ammo for me. The clerk, named Ashanti, says no. Ashanti proceeds to say that the person authorized to sell ammo isnt working today. So I walked over, and mentioned to Ashanti that the CA ammo background check law has been struck down, and ammo can be purchased without a background check. Ashanti then states 'our store policy is that we have to have a background check for ammo." So I then reiterate, and I offer to show her the law on my phone. I said "as of this past wednesday, the law has been struck down." Ashanti then raises her voice and says, with attitude "AS OF FRIDAY WE DONT DO THAT". This situation is ouzzling to me because I JUST bought ammo at the elk grove store. Another employee named faith walks over, and she reiterates to me that EVEN THOUGH it's currently against the law (and second amendment) to deny an ammo sale, they are refusing to sell me ammo. Keep in mind that I have all my credentials and I am not a prohibted person. I was simply trying to take part in the one day sale in their ad. As I am getting ready to leave, a young man who works there (i didnt catch his name but hes african american, dark skin with nice wavy hair) asks me whats going on. I tell him. He offers to call the greenhaven store to see if they have the same ammo. On the call, the greenhaven store verifies that they aren't doing background checks at that location. I thank the gentleman for his service, and i exit the store. I was embarassed that Ashanti took that tone with me, especially while other customers were watching, and I was RIGHT. even if i was wrong, why would you advertise a product, have the product in stock, on a ONE DAY sale, and then have nobody on the premises who can sell the product??

When it comes to sports, exercise and activity related equipment, this store first comes to mind. This business has been at this location and remained a strip mall anchor store for many years. I almost always find what I'm looking for in general. I'm not even athletic or active any more, but shopping here has always been a pleasant experience. It's fun to browse and see the latest products, clothing and foot wear. I've purchased some comfortable and fashionable pairs of sneakers over the years, especially when a sale is going on. The employees are friendly and ready to offer help. Even when my boyfriend couldn't find a specific replacement product that Big 5 once sold, the sales clerk had the knowledge about why it was no longer available and recommended a possible alternative. The alternative would not have been helpful in this situation, but I was impressed that we didn't get the "sorry, but we don't carry that anymore", brush off. There are a lot of competitive sporting goods stores out there that have come and gone, but I'm glad to see that this Big 5 remains a staple in my neighborhood! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvxY7o1U7pc

I really really really like this place.. whenever I can't find something I come straight to Big 5 because they always seem to hit the spot when others are empty or don't carry that particular item. I stand by this place because it has saved me so many times, LoL. Last trip was for South America and I needed a waterproof jacket and I couldn't find it anywhere.. not including online since it was last minute.. and what do you know. this place got it.. prices aren't that bad also.. sometimes if you go to their website they'll have coupons you can print out .. Yay !! I've live in SoCal and Vegas and there was always a Big 5 near..

The person on the phone was polite and articulate to answer what I needed. The person even remembered me when I came in the store. Very rare to get this type of service. I am assuming the bad reviews are people who were educated and felt horrified about their lack of knowledge. Gun culture is an educated culture, be prepared to learn or abide by the safety standards and rules that adhere to them. Inside the store was clean and spacious areas. The department I needed was the firearms section, which was at the far end of the shop. That being said they have a wide collection of what I say good ammo that you can rely on for self-defense. What I can also say is that they do not gouge you on prices. The prices are well within reason, and they are updated ammunition. By updated I mean that they have different casings for those who know that grains and bullet type matter. That being said, getting plinking ammunition is a good to go here. You can trust the brands they have in stock and the staff for the firearms department is knowledgeable and friendly. Keep in mind the long wait is due to either education, or the long lengthy checks to get said items. That being said, pay your taxes, pay your registration fees, do your due diligence and you're out and about easy. I may bring in my gun to get checked by their smith. But TBH American Made Baretta 9mm FS is the far superior choice than the mass produced m9 and Italian made one. I don't think I need a service on my weapon in quite some time. Do your research, some things made in America, is better and not well advertised. This goes for the ammunition as well. To the dude who helped me. Thank you, man. Thank you for your service as well. Representing Americans to the finest quality one can hope for. Thank you. Update - Put the wrong review for the wrong location. Review is for the gun cleaning. Brought my gun in to be cleaned. I would do it myself, but I have a child, and those chemical fumes are strong. That being said professionals have better tools, cleaners, and or oils. Their selections of firearms are quite nice. My instructor likes a sig 1911. TBH I just think he likes the SIG brand. He changed his mind after a few rounds of the broken in Baretta. I prefer the Baretta 92 FS. Not the M9. Note. The M9 Baretta is the same model, except mass produced for the military - also easier to track supposedly. Jamming on said Baretta is due to reloading too fast and not waiting for a full decock and one in the chamber load. That being said, make sure the entire magazine is fitted securely then take the safety off. Point blank, the 92FS will cock with the safety on automatically when empty, this is the reload problem as some people are able to reload too fast before taking the safety off to decock. That being said, my 92FS shoots true in a bladed stance at rapid fire. Note. 5 round rapid fire, 15-20 feet distance from target, and before the target paper flies up can be done with the 92FS. Within range, within standard, with a hard skill set notation. Note. You will get kicked out for rapid fire in most shooting ranges. Note. I had to break in my gun with a lot of rounds before it rang true. Expect to spend 2k+ ammo of breaking in a 92FS. Note. This location sells firearms for rather cheap, and at a good price. Considering inflation, the cost they have is almost the cost my firearm cost a decade ago. According to their list my firearm is 30 bucks to clean. Took about 30min to clean maybe more. That being said the gun came back clean, not greasy and one definite caveat. No odor. I got called to the desk when the item was done. There is a bathroom in the facility so no need to worry while you are waiting. I think the dude even cleaned my gun case too. Wonderful service. Note. They have a membership cleaning service or something that I just ignored and wasn't pressed about it.

You can see on the organizational level that the management here is not giving effort into the store. They have the coolers sent out prominently in the front of the store to grab everybody's attention and yet there's no prices on any of them and they have multiple different ones. No display nothing. Then I went over to the wall to look at cooler for about 20 minutes, searching all the coolers on the wall. They were all disorganized and I could not tell what price was what on which one. They were coolers in the wrong places and no customer can tell where the price is for any of them. In the front of the store when I go to pay, they don't accept Apple Pay. This is 2026 and the only reason that I can possibly see why places like Home Depot Walmart and sportsman's warehouse only take cards is because with Apple Pay they can't get your address and information in their database. But when you use a card they can. I went to the back of the store to go look for lures and jig heads, and there was about three men back there shopping for stuff. I don't even know the guys, and I heard them actually say the same thing they can't find the prices. This is actually like job number one for a manager to manage. His employees in the story is to ensure that his merchandise actually has prices on it so the customers when they go when they buy really quick, they can find the prices really fast. Apparently not here. Do not recommend this place

So grab a ticket and look around. So much stuff to look at. Just in the gun section was ammo, magazines, parts and so much more. It really is a nice store. I only waited a few minutes and my number was called. It was pretty busy since it was a Saturday. The guy had to look for the rifle I wanted but I told them it was in stock since I had called earlier. He found it in the back and it was on sale. Great price. SO the paperwork is standard to purchase a firearm but each store takes their time so as not to make any mistakes. The process here was pretty fast compared to other dealers. I was happy. As far as firearms, while waiting to complete the DROS, I noticed Turner's seemed to have a good selection of pistols and long guns. She then asked if I was a member and proceeded to explain membership benefits after I informed her that I didn't know what the membership entailed so their service is excellent. Everyone was kind and informative. They have an extensive selection of outdoor sporting goods accessories and clothing. I thought the membership was a good value since it's just a one time purchase at $30 and they had a special where if you spent $50 in addition to joining you'd get the $30 back in a promotional gift card so I bought my helmet and gloves in addition to a membership. While I'm glad I joined and enjoyed their selection of items they had on clearance, I will admit that their prices can be on the higher end. That wasn't something I was expecting to see even within their clearance and slightly used items. I'm sure the quality is definitely there but those prices caught me off guard. However, even with those unexpectedly higher prices on merchandise, I still felt like it was worth shopping there due to their excellent service, membership perks, and higher quality products in comparison to other retailers that might offer lower prices but you'll eventually pay for that with poor service and quality.
