I'm writing this review because uive been to this store location several times in the past and i have had similar experiences. I'll say that not ALL of my experiences have been bad, but when it has been bad, the sole problem has been the customer service. i shop at Big 5 on a regular basis, in elk grove, in sacramento, in antioch (pittsburg), in brentwood, and lots of other locations also. i appreciate their selections of merchandise, and alot of times their pricing also. Most of the stores I patronize, you can tell there is an emphasis on customer service. Thats not the case at the Mack road location. It's almost like they are insulted that you are shopping there. Today I took part in their 1 day deal for ammo. They had a really good deal for defense ammo, so I initially went to the elk grove location. At elk grove, they had the 9mm ammo but they were out of the 45. ****as i am writing this, California is under a court order to NOT conduct any background checks for ammo purchases. The previous law, which was found to violate the constitution, has been struck down. I travel from elk grove to the mack road store, which is about 4 miles away. I walk in, no one greets me. I walk over to the ammo counter, there's no one there. My friend asks the cashier in the front if they didn't mind retrieving ammo for me. The clerk, named Ashanti, says no. Ashanti proceeds to say that the person authorized to sell ammo isnt working today. So I walked over, and mentioned to Ashanti that the CA ammo background check law has been struck down, and ammo can be purchased without a background check. Ashanti then states 'our store policy is that we have to have a background check for ammo." So I then reiterate, and I offer to show her the law on my phone. I said "as of this past wednesday, the law has been struck down." Ashanti then raises her voice and says, with attitude "AS OF FRIDAY WE DONT DO THAT". This situation is ouzzling to me because I JUST bought ammo at the elk grove store. Another employee named faith walks over, and she reiterates to me that EVEN THOUGH it's currently against the law (and second amendment) to deny an ammo sale, they are refusing to sell me ammo. Keep in mind that I have all my credentials and I am not a prohibted person. I was simply trying to take part in the one day sale in their ad. As I am getting ready to leave, a young man who works there (i didnt catch his name but hes african american, dark skin with nice wavy hair) asks me whats going on. I tell him. He offers to call the greenhaven store to see if they have the same ammo. On the call, the greenhaven store verifies that they aren't doing background checks at that location. I thank the gentleman for his service, and i exit the store. I was embarassed that Ashanti took that tone with me, especially while other customers were watching, and I was RIGHT. even if i was wrong, why would you advertise a product, have the product in stock, on a ONE DAY sale, and then have nobody on the premises who can sell the product?? read more

This location is the worst Big 5 I have ever been to. Usually a fan but this location is a disgrace and the female manager that was on duty today was the worst. The price of the item was wrong, showed her the sale price on my phone and then she refused my digital coupon saying I couldn't use 2 coupons. I didn't use two coupons. I clarified the advertised price of 1 item and used 1 coupon. Then she sighed like I was imposing on her. It's fine. I can spend my money many other places and Big 5 won't be one of them. OMG I copied and pasted this review from the page below. What is wrong with Big 5? This was exactly my experience yesterday as well. All the while the rude associate was murmuring in the back, saying "I can't. I'm not doing this today!" Wow, what attitude! Not our fault you chose to come to work on a bad day! Seriously need to check yourself. I am entirely unhappy with this experience, the associate's name is Adrieanna at the Big 5 off of Mack Road. She was so hostile, rude, and must have been having a bad day because her attitude was completely unwarranted. I don't know why she made it so hard for my sister and I to use our coupons on snow gloves when they have the coupons right there at the register. What? Was she pissed that we got a deal? Does she not like her workplace? Whatever it was, she needs to take a class or three in human decency because what you put out in the world will come back to you and she will absolutely get her karma. Soon! My son and I were desperately looking for football cleats. Our first stop was Dicks sporting goods at Delta and unfortunately they didn't have the size I needed. We went to Big 5 on laguna next (completely forgetting that there was one here. BIG 5 on Laguna Blvd was also very limited, which is understandable because it's the season everyone is buying cleats I assume but the workweek there tried to sell us the only size 9 they had which was very old and USED! Come on, we're desperate but not that desperate. finally drove to this location. We went straight for cleats and a very nice young lady approached us. I looked at her name tag and was only able to see EMI... I didn't wanna be rude and stare. She was an African American young women so if anyone knows her name please let me know! Anyway we asked her for a size and she politely said I'll be right back. While waiting another associate approached us to ask if we needed assistance! Wow,I was impressed. The lady comes out and she says she didn't have the specific shoe in our size but she offered to bring all the size 8.5 and 9 she had so that we could choose. Great idea, I thought. A couple minutes later she comes out with 3 boxes. My son was able to fit 2 of the pairs. He couldn't decide so we decided to take both! Thanks to the young lady, who we saw clocking out right before we checked out. Her shift was almost over but not for a second did she ever make me feel rushed or like she was annoyed that we walked in last minute. I came in because there was a deal on tents, for my senior seminar at Sac State, my team & I decided we wanted to make care packages for the homeless around downtown Sacramento. Long story short, the manager helped me find as many tents that was in our budget, & she helped me carry it out to the car. When it comes to sports, exercise and activity related equipment, this store first comes to mind. This business has been at this location and remained a strip mall anchor store for many years. I almost always find what I'm looking for in general. I'm not even athletic or active any more, but shopping here has always been a pleasant experience. It's fun to browse and see the latest products, clothing and foot wear. I've purchased some comfortable and fashionable pairs of sneakers over the years, especially when a sale is going on. The employees are friendly and ready to offer help. Even when my boyfriend couldn't find a specific replacement product that Big 5 once sold, the sales clerk had the knowledge about why it was no longer available and recommended a possible alternative. The alternative would not have been helpful in this situation, but I was impressed that we didn't get the "sorry, but we don't carry that anymore", brush off. I needed some steel toe shoes at the last minute and stopped by another location on my way home from work and bought a pair of shoes with no assistance. I was wrong and the shoes I bought were not steel toe (again, no assistance at the first place). This location was super helpful. Karen was warm and friendly. I didnt get the name of the other 2 employees in the back, but they were both very helpful and friendly too. I couldnt find any reason to give them any less than 5 stars because everyone was so helpful and they had way more stock than the other place. Thank you, Karen and crew. Just came out of there and had a horrible experience. I just had some extra time on my hand so i wanted to shop. I wanted to try some clothes on but the manager said only 3 at a time which I complied but id new id be a nuisance because I came here to shop. When i came out with some clothes the guy was like "they fit" and I was like naa. He said man you gon have to leave in short cuz i aint got time for this and he said this (not verbatim but to the best of my memory) in front of the manager at which i asked him so you dnt have time to offer me customer service. Really bad customer service- I don't know why the store hired such rude people that knows nothing about customer services. The cashier Input the wrong amount for one of the items that I was going to get. I asked her that the box and the tag on the item said was this amount why am I getting a different amount? She rudely said if I have questions I need to go back to the department of the item and ask whoever working in that department and get back in line when I'm ready to pay. I usually use a SPIBELT for running, and Fleet Feet Sac only had Nathan or Amphipod versions, and other options such as the Flipbelt. Decided to come in here race weekend to check out my other choices. First person I asked directed me to arm sport bands for holding smartphones, and the second stop was actual fanny packs, but by the third try better explaining what I was looking for, Brad brought me right to the corner where they had the hydration belts and expandable ones -- SPIBELT included, as well as Nike. Both were around $20 which is about right, although I didn't find a color I really liked. It's good to know they do carry the item though! Since I got a bigger phone, I need a bigger zipper opening to accommodate and secure it. I also checked out their sale on running shoes, including youth sizes because I have small feet and can get away with kid's shoes for lower prices, and they did have quite a selection. What surprised me the most was that the "Hot Price" sticker said one thing, which I already thought was a good deal, then when scanned, was $5 less than the "Hot Price"! A steal indeed. Very good store with good service. I have bought quality sporting goods and other items from this shop. I know that since I bought good track shoes which I used to run a 5:53 mile. And I got some c02 cartridges/6mm .20 gram rounds for an airsoft pistol. All I bought has worked perfectly. Prices are decent as well, cheaper than most stores selling this stuff. The only complaint I might have is the selection and of items available. read more
