It's a great place for them to start gaining work experience. Had some really helpful folks in the baseball shoes today. They usually have exactly what we are looking for and will check other local Big 5s for inventory if they don't. Get on their email list. We have gotten some good deals on things and they have daily deals and weekly coupons. You should not have to pay full price for most items with their emailed coupons. This store is packed with goodies from top to bottom. It's a big snug but ask for help if you can't find something. Love the staff!!! I come here often and I have had mixed experiences. I typically leave with something. The have a wide range of sporting goods. I have found that they are pretty good about carrying a wide range of ammo and the prices are decent for California. The shoe selection is above average and the employees are very quick to help or make suggestions. I used to be an avid fisherman and would frequent them for most of my tackle needs. Come check them out, but be prepared to pay more than Walmart and a lot less than Dick's. read more

I went to the big five yesterday and there were two new people there. One of the guys was very big. The other guy was a little shorter and much thinner. When I walked in the thinner guy, kind of said hello. The big guy just stared at me as I walked in. I walked around the store, looking at things from end to end. No one ever asked me if I needed help. I didn't find what I needed so I started to leave and I was walking out the door the big guy just stared at me. My how things changed. Before this visit yesterday, I always got a greeting from one of the staff members as I walked in and I was always thanked for coming as I walked out. I don't think I'll be going back here again. I just came from this store and made the trek there after not finding the sleeping bag I needed at the store near me. I called this store and thankfully I spoke to a sales associate named Anamarie who was kind enough to check on the item I was looking for. I had already seen the item from the special deals they had online so I really wanted to get it for my upcoming camping trip. She helped me when I got into the store and also got the item from the to shelf. Thankfully, I had time to drive the 27 miles to the store!!! There was another sales associate at the register who also was nice and friendly. Sometimes you go into these stores and customer service is just lacking, like they don't want to be there or just hate their job. It does not appear to be the case here in the Elk Grove Big 5. I had an urgent need to buy basketball shoes for my son who forgot his pair for practice, and Big 5 was the closest option. Upon entering, I was greeted by the staff. However, I had to search a bit to find their limited selection of basketball shoes. An employee eventually helped me find the right size, but I had to ask for assistance. At checkout, I inquired about any promotional discounts, but was informed that it takes 24 hours to receive one via email after signing up for their rewards program, so I declined. They do accept ApplePay, which was convenient. The shoes worked fine for the day, but not worth the $50 retail price for a pair of very basic Adidas. There is a 30-day return policy if needed. 4 stars for the limited selection and the need to ask for help, but overall, it was a satisfactory experience. read more

When you enter this store they will profile you and make you feel that they are watching you. I understand they want to protect their merchandize but don't make your customers feel unwelcome. I was looking around on what to buy and the lady kept asking if I want to checkout. I ignored her and she came up to me like I'm a dumb stupid homeless man that needs to leave. At the same time every year T-ball rolls around. And I always forget to get a belt and socks for my toddler until it's the day of picture day. I scramble and freak out and I'm sure I lose tons of hair over it. But not this year!!! This big five is located right next to my house and I was scared that they wouldn't be open in time for me to get my daughter's socks and belt. But they open five minutes early. I ran inside. A wonderful woman named Tammy helped me out. She took me exactly where I needed to go. I think I was in and out of the store in about two minutes, which is awesome because usually I wander around all of the stuff they have to offer and get distracted. Having a Big 5 Sporting Goods in Elk Grove is nice, but service needs improvement. Today, I went to buy an item from the 1 Day Deals. I specifically asked if there were any limits, and the manager, Natalie, said there wasn't one. I continued to purchase a small quantity of the one item. After I had already paid, the number of items was only discounted up to a specific limit, meaning there was an actual limit. When I inquired about this, Natalie said she thought I asked if there was a limit to how many I could buy. I reiterated that I had asked about any limits because it was a 1 Day Deal, but she couldn't offer a refund, nor could I return the extra items. In short, check any discounts and the final price before you pay. Some things are final sales and can't be returned or credited. read more

Online there store hours for Sunday indicate 930 for opening time. Arrived at 930 and as I pulled up we seen someone cleaning windows on the inside. Tried to open rhe door and it was not opened at 930. waited for about 20 minutes tried to call the store no answer. Waited til 10 and no one still opened the door. I have seen so many huge mega sports stores come and go in the last 10-15 years. I thought Big 5 will not be about to compete with those mega sports chains. But guess what, I'm wrong! Big 5 doesn't have everything you're looking for, but they have most of the items you needed with a much lower overhead. They are the winners! This Big 5 store in Elk Grove/Laguna Creek is opened more than 20 years ago if I remember correctly. The store still looks pretty good inside and out. They have most of the sports items I'm looking for when I needed them. The store is clean and organized. The employees are nice. This is what most of the customers wanted! The parking lot is safe and clean. I have no problem finding a parking space whenever I'm there. read more

I don't normally write reviews on Yelp but for this unnecessary experience, I must share. After getting brunch with my 3 kids and my bf (which is in the same shopping center), we walked over to Big 5 and decided to do some shopping. Once we walked in, the store manager had already started eyeing us. I had grabbed some items to purchase and so did my kids and boyfriend. I noticed each and every time I turned around, the store manager was in every corner watching me. Not only was he watching me, he was watching all of us even when we had separated to roam around. This by far was the most racist and uncomfortable experience ever! Given that I am Southeast Asian and I look a bit darker than your ordinary East Asians, I found this pretty rude and discriminating. I hope the company realize that they are chasing away their customers. I won't be shopping there anymore. read more

It's been a very long time since I came back here. It is winter season, so there are a lot of snow gear and sled, etc in stock. We basically came here for a toddler snow pants, which they had a certain brand on sale. They didn't have many size 4t left and luckily an associate was able to assist and found us a snow pants that was on sale. read more

It made me feel very uncomfortable as he is an older white man and I am a younger woman of Asian descent. Went in to buy Promotional Ammo. Was assisted by a woman with long dark. She advised me that I needed a Passport or Birth Certificate for purchase. (I bought ammo at another store that same week and was not asked for either of these). So I asked her again and she confirmed, insisted that I needed either. Went back with my Passoort a couple days later. Was assisted by a tall,bald man. I advised him that I wanted 3 boxes of the Promo Ammo. He started checking me out on his computer then told me that he cannot help me today and he got locked out of the system. I asked again and he conformed that he cannot complete the sale as he is locked out. He advised me to come back the next day as he comes in at 11am. Went back in again for a 3rd time. A woman with medium length dark hair asked me if I needed help. I advised her that I was waiting for the man from the previous day to come in so he could help me pith the Promo purchase. I pointed to the ammo and she said, "I see them turned upside down". She said she could help. She took my ID and asked if it was a Real ID and I confirmed that it was, She proceeded to check me out and completed the transaction within 15 minutes. I advised her that this was my 3rd trip in to purchase Promo Ammo and that my Promo Price was now eaten up by having to come in 3 times. I advised her that the woman from my first visit said that I needed a Passport or Birth Certificate. She said she will take care of this and a Passport or Birth Certificate is not needed if I have a Real ID. This review represents my personal visit to this store and is based on the facts as I experienced them. In the end I paid more for the Promo Ammo. read more

Stopped here this morning for snow gloves and a sled and as soon as I entered I could feel the negative vibe from the 2 females who work there. No one greeted us or asked if we needed help. When asked if she could get a sled down she yelled at one of the male employees to get it down without even saying anything to my son who asked. I didn't catch her name but she was the one hanging the gloves on the shelf. Then the cashier, also female, also had no personality. No smiles no good morning, nothing but finally said have a good day without emotion. I will say the 2 guys seemed to be awake and had a much better personality. So my star rating is 1 star for the store being open early and clean 1 star for having items in stock and 1 star for the guys. Oh I really hope that neither of those young ladies are the manager cause that would be bad on so many levels. read more

It's official, Big5 on laguna blvd. is probably the worst sporting good store of all the Big 5 stores in Sac county and I've been to the ones in Folsom, RC, Arden, Carmichael. Man.... talk about poor / lack of understanding to loyal customers. I witnessed Big 5 staff treat a customer like they did not matter. Telling the customer " it is what it is" . 3/19/19 I used to come here all the time growing up. I haven't been back recently until today around 6pm. As I walked in, I was promptly greeted by Anthony. He asked if he could help me find anything. I told him what I was looking for and he guided me in the right direction. Anthony also helped me out when I was ready to checkout my item. I really appreciate him asking if I had any coupons or discounts I wanted to use. I had a coupon in the car, so thanks to his outstanding customer service I found exactly what I was looking for and saved money! I was looking for fishing gear and this assistant manager Zack was watching as if we were stealing, which was really weird being followed. But on top of that, he was rude to the cashier giving her a lot of attitude and speaking very condescendingly towards her. Then I realized I was charged extra when on an item that was marked down so I came back in and he grabbed the item out of my hand rudely and then said "looks like I owe you a $1.27" and laughed. I'm sorry it only had 2/6 hooks it was supposed to have. I have never had such a bad customer service experience at this location. read more

Had a good experience with the crew. Bought a treadmill, but was mispriced at the normal cost. They had the treadmill in stock and got an additional 10percent off the purchase. Great deal. I'm on their email list so I get updated on new sales going on daily. I usually would shop at my closer located Big 5 on florin and green haven but their service is some what questionable. I found a shot gun on sale that I had researched being a good quality fire arm for a good price. I tried going to florin then Mack road and then having to make appointments and it's seemed like a lot of trouble just to even get any help looking at the fire arm let alone purchasing one. Then I finally call laguna and like a ray of sunshine Dave Hernandez to the rescue. He answered all my questions and asks me to come down at my convenience then as I get there he greets me with a smile and asks If I was the person he had talked with earlier and I responded YES! He was very informative and helpful with the transaction with purchasing the fire arm and I also decided to buy some ammo as well so all in all I spent close to $500 and thanks to Dave I'll be looking forward to spending my money with him and his store! I want to also say this is the first time purchasing a fire arm from big 5 and my previously shopping experience left me not wanting to go back to big 5 ever again but thankfully I decided to give this location a chance and it served me well to meet the manager Dave Hernandez make sure you ask for him he is patient, informative, and knowledgeable. I had a 10.00 off coupon if I spent 30.00 - I bought a 29.99 pair of tennis shoes size 81/2 and then found a 9.99 pool raft. That met the criteria for 30.00. However, I thought I would grab a size 9 shoe just in case the smaller ones didn't fit, for my 92 year old friend who survived the Paradise Fire. Upon returning the size 9 shoe, I was told that the 10.00 off coupon was spread out among the three items I purchased. Nice tactic "Corporate" -So I am not getting my full 10.00 off after my return - Even though I had still purchased over 30.00 worth of items. This will be a nice lesson for my 7/8th grade math students. You lost my business and maybe some of our youth will learn a lesson too after this slimy business tactic. read more

I had a positive experience today at our local Big 5, Store 00264, that I have to share. I'm in need of 2 twin size air mattresses this week. I've checked Walmart prices and Big 5's are better on a particular brand that's currently on sale. With Covid, I've become accustomed to the convenience, speed, and competitive prices on Amazon but I'm trying to remind myself to "buy local". So I drive to Big 5 about 1/2 hour before closing. Queen size is available in stock on the sale brand but no twin size on the shelf. A nice gentleman (the manager?) asks if he can help and I explain what I'm looking for. He double checks the shelf, none there. He tells me he'll check inventory online. It shows 2 in stock in this store and 5 at the Florin Road store. He offers to check the storeroom, which he does to no avail. He calls another associate to double check with him again, then rechecks the shelves in case the 2 elusive boxes are behind other brands... still no luck. So he apologizes and tells me that the Florin Rd location will have the mattresses. I explain that I don't want to drive that far and I ask if he can give me a better price on the other brand that's not on sale. He tells me that he'll give me the (previous) sale price and marks them down for me. The price he offers me is costlier than the other (elusive) sale mattress but nonetheless a sale price that is very fair. I'm so pleased! The young lady at the register accepts a coupon code from me that was on Retail Me Not, and a young man came from stocking the shelves and very sweetly offered to carry my somewhat heavy boxes to my car! Now THAT'S SERVICE! I am absolutely going to check my local Big 5 every time I need anything that falls within the parameters of what their stores would normally stock. If you have been to a Big 5 Sporting Goods store, you probably experience the same type of service. They usually only have a few staffs on hand and when they are fully staff, it takes a while for them to help you. I recently purchased a combat knife for a camping trip and had to ask for someone to help me. Even when I was looking at the knives, the staff possess little to no knowledge about the equipment except for the price. I rarely go to Big 5 unless I need to purchase random sporting equipment. I'm really surprise that this company is still in business. If you are hoping for the type of customer service and product knowledge like you are at a REI, then go to REI. If you know what you want and don't care about customer service, this is the place for you. 2 stars... Enjoy! read more

I have to give props to the manager of this store. I don't recall his name, but he is the taller man who I believe is the head manager. I don't know how many times I've been to this store and received the best customer service. I do not know how the store as a whole compares to other in regards to prices, but when it comes to firearms, Big 5 can be quite competitive. I don't know how many gun stores I've been to and just left irritated each time. I seem to always leave here (when researching guns at least) with a satisfied experience. I have dealt with other employees at this store who have also been very nice and helpful. If nothing else, I love the customer service here which to me is sooooooooooooo important, and in addition to the customer service, I also decided to buy two firearms from this location because of the competitive prices. Never again will I shop here. I just attempted to return an item back to the store and was told by the manager that I couldn't. I bought a pair of shoe inserts for my daughter last week only to get home to find out that inside the box someone had stole the inserts out and switched them with some sort of shoe pad. Totally not my fault, myself nor the store clerk checked inside the box during my original purchase. I had my original receipt, the debit card that I used, etc. What hurts the most is that I've spent thousands of dollars at this particular store over the last few years and now they just lost a customer over $30. When it is cold and rainy, customers don't appreciate waiting outside when your hours say you should be open. What makes it worse? When someone comes to the door, says they are closed, those outside point to the sign, the worker asks US what time is it, says they'll get someone to open the door, and NO ONE COMES BACK. I go in this sporting goods store in search of binoculars and at first i was looking around and called over an employee. I asked for 10x50 binoculars and she just picks two up w/o telling me where they are from and their price. I had to ask how much and she tells me the price and BRAND name of binoculars. I asked for the name as in the product name and she tells me the brand. She looks at me like im stupid and points at the brand on the binoculars. I was speechless. I wanted to see the model of the binoculars and see if they were multi coated or not but before i got the chance to look at the sides to see the model she takes it puts it back and walks away without asking me for anything else. read more
