I've never felt more uncomfortable or unwelcome in a retail store. From the moment my three friends and I walked in, the atmosphere was hostile. A female employee was aggressively slamming doors, throwing a ladder onto the floor, and repeatedly giving us dirty looks. It felt intentional and incredibly disrespectful. We are all brown, and it was impossible not to notice that white customers were being treated normally while we were ignored. I was waiting at the counter to purchase ammunition, and despite clearly being ready to buy, no one acknowledged me or offered help. It felt like we simply didn't matter. The combination of rude behavior, lack of customer service, and the clear feeling of racial discrimination made this a terrible experience. No one should feel profiled or unwelcome while trying to shop. I will not be returning, and I strongly recommend management address this behavior immediately. A few years ago I walked into this store thinking they sold vinyl but no it's a sports store not a music store. Was kinda bummed but I said fuck it what have I got to lose and walked inside. This was honestly the best decision I have ever made. They just have so much stuff in here. I spend most of my days by the bowling section just looking around and chilling and vibing. The handsome gentlemen that works the shoe section is always eager to help. The cashiers are always so friendly and joyous. It's like I'm not even in Manteca anymore and like I get teleported to awesome sauce ville. Wow I feel so happy just talking about this place. Oh how I love it so. Avoid this store for firearm purchase. Very incompetent personnel. I filled out their tablet with my correct information but Adam completed my DROS application using my DL info and submitted the same without asking me to review it. 4 days later my DROS got declined because my name and address were wrong! Talked to the manager Helena Carlson over the phone when can I reapply and she couldn't give me a definite answer. "Maybe end of the week." After losing 4 days due to their error she's asking me to wait 5 more days. I then asked can I cancel the transaction she said yes. Will I get my background check back she said yes. Drove 8 miles to the store for my refund and was told they cannot return my $37.19 DROS fee. But I was told over the phone the fee will be returned as well. Not wanting to lose $37, I asked if she could do the re-application right then, she said she's going home. Very poor customer service! This store has no business dealing with firearms sales. Very frustrating and infuriating. I'm giving one star simply because zero star is not an option. read more

Get ready to be awkwardly profiled as you walk up to the doors. I Walked in to purchase a 1 day fishing license just now and before I could even get through the doors I'm being stared down by all 3 employees as they smirk and jibber jabber. I walk I n and they're still staring but abruptly stop talking. The girl at the register sarcastically (and extremely loud considering the store is empty) asks what I need I told her what I was in for and she went on with her sarcasm. As she's processing the transaction another customer is walking up and same thing they're staring him down and making rude unnecessary comments about him.. he turns around apparently forgot his mask.. On New Year's Eve, Bass Pro closed at 6:00, but Big 5 was open until 8:30, so my boyfriend and I stopped here. We needed a belated Christmas present for my 13-year-old cousin who just got a shotgun. For Christmas he got a bung of shells from the family and Santa, so we thought we'd get him some clay pigeons and a thrower so he could actually have something to shoot AT! We were in and out in less than 10 minutes, and the manager let us have the box of pigeons for $10 instead of $12 because the box had been opened. Good, quick service! read more

What can be said about Big 5. They have mid grade sporting goods at top shelf prices. Their sales ads always have the same stuff on sale: new balance shoes, the same BB guns, Nike cleats, the Mossberg 500 with two interchangeable barrels that's been in their ads since the 90s... and seriously over priced fishing gear. On the other hand, I find myself going here for things I need that can't be found at Walmart. Their service is poor, but as long as you know what you want, it doesn't matter much anyway. Today, I received the worst customer service from Monique at the register. I asked if I can have a bag (because I had something that turned bad in my car) she said she can't. So I asked her if I can buy one and she said no. Then I asked her if I buy something can I get the bag and she said yes. I quickly found an item that I can use in the stand right in front of her register or where she is standing and as I turned around to pay for it, Monique told me that she didn't know that I was shopping and took care of another customer. What really rubbed it in was that she asked me if I wanted a bag and that was the whole purpose of making the purchase in the first place. No greeting, no happy new year or have a great day, or even a thank you for your business. I will never set foot in this store again. Bad experience today at this store with this cashier named Bianca. She was very rude and showed very bad attitude to my wife at check out. Apparently she didn't like how my wife opened and checked one of the blankets to check. Nevermind that one of the sales ladies gave her permission. So, she ended up buying 2 of these blankets and apologized to Bianca about the opened item. Instead of Bianca saying a simple, oh it's ok I can put the opened item back for you, she didn't speak and gave my wife the silent treatment. My wife confronted her but she didn't even acknowledge what she just did, intead said "what did I do?" in a condescending tone... the other people at this store have the best customer service, which is the main reason we shop here, but it's unfortunate this one bad apple in the basket is ruining all that. The manager here was very rude and unhelpful. My husband bought a shot gun here and we buy our shoes here all the time. Normally with the regular staff we have no problem. The woman who originally helped us with the gun was friendly and awesome to deal with. However, when my husband came back in to pick up his gun, the service was incredibly rude from the actual manager of the store. He came in and told the manager he was there to pick up his shotgun. The manager then proceeded to tell him it would be a few minutes and actually went back to stocking shelves in front of my husband for 20 minutes while he ignored my husband. When he finally got around to helping him, it took him over 45 minutes to get out of there when it usually takes about 15 minutes to pick up a gun. Jennifer (a manager) does not deserve a job in customer service. Put her in the back to clean the bathrooms because her behavior and attitude is not suitable for interaction with customers. She is rude and demeaning to customers. She talks down to customers as if they do not comprehend or that she is better than everyone else. I am not familiar with the store and asked as I walked in where the shoes were and she pointed to the back and mustered her most sarcastic tone and said "in the back where it says 'footwear'" and as I walked away I saw her turn back to her cashier and roll her eyes and start to whisper. Last weekend my Husband and a lot of our friends were on our way to a rafting trip in Manteca when we had a most unfortunate situation. When we went to inflate our rafts we purchased from Big 5 in another city there was a huge hole in it. We were miles from home without a raft for a trip we had been planning for weeks. I was a nervous wreck and didn't know what to do when I realized there may be a Big 5 close. I called the Big 5 in Manteca and was greeted by a VERY friendly young lady. I explained my situation and she assured me that I could exchange it for a new one. She asked if I had my receipt, but unfortunately I did not because I left most my valuables including my wallet at home in preparation for the rafting trip. Thankfully I brought my ID and credit card. She said she would ask her Manager if this would be ok. When she got back on the phone she said it would be no problem. This definitely calmed me. When we arrived to Big 5 we were able to exchange the raft with no problems and the VERY friendly Manager who could sense we were in a rush to meet back up with our friends even offered to inflate our raft to ensure there were no holes and to save us time. We were elated at this gesture and it really helped us! The Manager also offered to sell us a rope and pump at a discount price because it was not in it's original packaging. It was such a great deal that we said what the heck. In times of stress it's nice to have businesses with great customer service who will go above and beyond to help. Thank you Big 5! read more
